What's the best setup for me? Which devices should I use?


 What's the best setup for me? Which devices should I use?

So I'm wanting to get into self hosting, and I could use some advice! I'm not sure which device to use for what. There's a lot I'd like to do, and I don't know how I should divide everything up by use case.

Should I have a dedicated network device for security, handling domain blocking and VPN?

Roughly how much processing power should I be devoting to this?

And how should I deal with gaming in two locations? (It seems like it would be annoying to have to start up my desktop PC every time I want to play games on the couch. Is it viable to just run everything from the PC and use a thin client for desktop and couch usage, or is latency going to be a huge issue? It's probably not good for stability, either.)

My list of devices I can use:

Desktop PC, RPi, Intel compute stick, and an old laptop. I'd be willing to get more hardware, but not looking to spend big.

The full list of what I'd like to do:

Pihole/adguard, wireguard VPN (I'd like to route my phone traffic through my home network. Currently using TrackerControl, but I'd like tracker/ad blocking with a regular vpn too, and it would also be nice to be able to manage things remotely)

HTPC interface, with the ability to play games from desktop or couch

Home assistant (Maybe with voice recognition? That's a low priority though)

Nextcloud and/or NAS, Media management with *arr, as well as some easy backup solution

And some headroom for a few other miscellaneous things. (Minecraft server? Website / email? All low priority.)

Sorry for the long post, and thanks in advance for any help or suggestions. I wrote out as much as I can to hopefully avoid the XY problem. I just don't know where to start, and I don't want to set everything up and then immediately realize I should have done it all differently!

There's no set plan or prescription, and no guide. You just pick the smallest set of resources you may have lying around, install what you need on it, then don't think about it until you need to. That's it.

Don't go out and buy a bunch of hardware in anticipation of some big thing you MIGHT want to do. Just use the hardware and tools you actually need to use, then move on until you actually do need hardware for a specific something.

On dirait bien qu'il -trump- a fini d'épouser la cause des sionistes évangélistes, même si beaucoup d’analystes prétendent encore que son entrée illégale en guerre serait une façon d'équilibrer le conflit.
En fait il y a continuité dans ~~sa haine~~ sa volonté de destruction de l'iran, et sa position actuelle est la suite de l'assassinant de Soleimani.

On a related note, I don't think he thinks Trump is "smart", @Joyce Donahue, I think he thinks trump is the path to power.

Vance is not an idiot, he's evil. And unfortunately, he's comparatively smart. What he lacks, but Trump has (at least among some people whom I barely understand) is charisma.

I think Vance realizes he can never make it in politics on his own because of his personality, but he attaches himself to Trump because Trump innately knows how to wield power.

Le problème (pour les États-Unis) avec L'Iran c'est que le pays a rejoint les BRICS+. L'agenda permettant de faire mains basses sur tout le Moyen-Orient tombe à l'eau et n'importe quel prétexte est bon pour y foutre le chaos. Maintenant il va aussi falloir composer avec la Chine, qui est déjà en la ligne de mire. Si elle décide de soutenir l'Iran, comme elle l'a fait avec la Russie, en vendant par exemple ses avoirs américains, elle peut facilement casser les reins de ces cons d'impérialistes...

A foreign "groom" had the entire Disney park in Paris blocked off for two days - in order to marry a child. The "bride" was just 9 years old.

A real incident, confirmed by the police and Disneyland itself.

The guests were already lined up. Everything was booked. But when the "bride" arrived, the staff were left breathless. A child. NINE years old. Immediate cancellation. The police were alerted by staff and a total of four people were arrested.

Begrudgingly leaning how to use #torr so I can continue to use my #windows 10 computer after it gets murdered with nothing to replace it. I only need it for a few programs the rest are on my #linux computer. I also need to download from steam and remote access my linux desktop because this is a laptop. I bought Microsoft NTFS for Linux by Paragon Software for a linux version of chkdsk. It also includes "ufsd" a somewhat redundant driver for reading and writing ntfs. (I already had ntfs-3g) What are the differences between ufsd and ntfs-3g?

I dual boot and and I have 4TB HDD that is also formatted to NTFS. I can access both from my Linux system, and move files between the two, with ntfs-3g all the time. I even have them both automount on boot and have never had an issue.

Until this post, I've always thought this paragon software was to be used on Windows to access the Linux ext4/btrsf... Etc drives!

That we are currently in a black hole.

There's a famous argument for the existence of God which goes like this:
1. Everything has a cause
2. The universe exists
3. Therefore there must be some cause of that existence that is outside of the bounds of the universe.

This argument works until you ask what created God? So there has to be something eternal. As an atheist, my opinion is that the universe is eternal. Most people will then point to the big bang, saying "well the universe can't be eternal because we know it had a beginning". But that's not entirely true. The big bang was a singularity, meaning all the mass was concentrated into a point. Not a point in space; space or time doesn't even make sense in a singularity. It's just the farthest back that we can possibly know about. We know of one other type of singularity and that's a black hole.

My crackpot theory is that everything ingested by a black hole over it's entire life becomes a universe within the black hole. The timeline would be entirely separate from our timeline and they would see the origin of their universe the same as we would. They would have the same vast space that we would no matter how large the black hole. It would follow that we are in a black hole with potentially infinite black hole layers above us.

The State Department had temporarily paused issuing visas for foreign students at the end of May while it came up with the new social media guidance and it will now resume taking appointments.

"The enhanced social media vetting will ensure we are properly screening every single person attempting to visit our country," a senior State Department official said.
