Für die Betriebe selbst war ihr Einsatz oft mit Belastungen verbunden. Sie waren verpflichtet, für Verpflegung und Unterkunft zu sorgen. Auch die Knorr-Bremse AG beschäftigte ebenso wie ihre Tochterunternehmen in großer Zahl ausländische Arbeitskräfte. In der Aufsichtsratssitzung vom 4. März 1943 berichtete der Vorstand:
»Der verstärkte Einsatz ausländischer Arbeitskräfte, in der Hauptsache Ostarbeiter und Franzosen, zwang zur Aufstellung von Barackenlägern, bei deren Errichtung wir an bestimmte Vorschriften gebunden waren. Diese Barackenläger wurden teils durch uns errichtet, teils durch das Reich, und uns mietweise zur Benutzung überlassen. [...] In diesen Barackenlägern sind rund 2700 ausländische Arbeiter untergebracht worden.«")
