Went on my first long-distance Amtrak trip and just wanted to give a giant shoutout to the lovely support agent who took pity on me for missing my departure at Union Station and allowed me to change my onboarding to a different station like 30 minutes away. Would love to say that fixed all my problems, but oh boy, being on the second floor of a moving train is a STRUGGLE.

My short trip to San Francisco is over, and it's time to head back to Los Angeles! And a fun fact: this train runs two-day journeys in each direction, and apparently the staff doesn't turn over at the end of each length of the trip. Meaning, since I got off on day one, spent two days in SF, and then hopped back onboard on day four-- LONG STORY SHORT, I got on the same exact train with the same exact attendants from my first trip, and everyone fucking remembered the dying girl.

by the way... the phone interview I had to do for SNAP approval was another success story for the hardware VOIP phone a kind reader gifted me a few months ago.

it just works so much better than Android and desktop apps.

I of course brought it with me over here (it can charge via USB-C and does not require its cradle), and when it rang today I was able to just answer it with no fumbling and without missing the call.

(since SIP calling was ripped out of AOSP, most generic VOIP apps on Android are ... not great. though I do note one is helpfully reminding me of voicemails once an hour, that's useful.)

The only reason it feels shameful to identify myself as a victim of spousal abuse is that for some reason some people who hear that are going to make the determination that I am gullible and masochistic, and if I had just been smarter, no one could ever have hurt me.

I don't get how women are excoriated whenever we are perceived as "disloyal" but when we "stand by our man" the way we were taught to, holding out hope that he will change, we're dumb bitches who want men to hurt us.

By the way, I am not fucking sorry for any of it. I wish I had understood what was happening sooner and left. I wish I had not accepted mistreatment.

But now that I'm in a healthy relationship, all those things that kept me with that shitty guy are the things that make THIS relationship work. I don't assume the worst about him. I consider the possibility I could be wrong. I offer forgiveness. I am supportive when things are tough.

I think it's because society sets women and men up to have different expectations for heterosexual relationships. We all grow up surrounded by examples of men treating women, especially those they sleep with, badly. It's a norm we're all implicitly and sometimes explicitly taught to expect. That leads to a lot of bad behavior from men towards women and a lot of self/victim blaming from women - and a lot of cookies being baked for normal men who are straight but realize women are people.

I've always hated the term "marriage equality" because traditional marriage is so unequal and was literally invented to institutionalize inequality, but in some ways normalizing same sex relationships being visible in public has the potential to help improve straight relationships because now you can have a marriage without a presumed "head of household" in traditional terms. There's a reason straight women watch so much gay men's porn (besides hot male bodies): respect.

You may be talking about a different dynamic, but especially re: all of those divorced angry guys, I see something more like...

They thought women were like vending machines, and you put in "the work" of being "nice" and they expect certain things back. Except women, like most people, don't enjoy entitlement, especially when, as is often the case, they didn't ask for those things in the first place.

So "I guess I should have been an asshole all along." YOU WERE DUDE THATS THE PROBLEM.
