My comment isn't to disrespect the past. It is to highlight the fact that boomers cannot carry the Bitcoin protocol forward. Any younger generation is going to be less productive by default due to less experience. Although I have to say working in an office with boomers is exhausting. I have to basically explain to them how to do basic functions on a computer. And they are far less productive than I am BC of that. So many of them are extremely less productive BC they are just too old.
Boomers have presided over the most massive expansion of debt in human history. In America they were gifted the most productive economy in human history and they squandered it on themselves. When Fru-Fru whelped a litter sired by Darling that included a blue, white, & gold puppy, the breeders were floored. The parents were champion blue and tan Yorkshire Terriers that Werner & Gertrude Biewer had bred before. No previous litters had ever produced a tricolor puppy, and this one came out of nowhere. The Biewers had no way of knowing at the time that the puppy they would name “Snowflake” was the product of two parents who carried the recessive piebald gene.
Born in 1984, Snowflake was the only puppy out of 4 who had the unusual coloring.
Given that his color was a disqualification, I don’t know why the breeders chose to breed more Snowflakes other than that they found him beautiful and decided to develop a line that consistently produced a tri-colored (piebald) Yorkshire Terriers.
The couple began a carefully selective breeding program, the goal to create a new line.Most of their fellow Yorkie owners saw Snowflake as a “mismarked” Yorkie.
Prevailing belief was that Snowflake was the result of a recessive piebald gene occasionally present in Yorkshire Terriers, & certainly not evidence of a different breed. That might have been the end of it had the couple not produced subsequent piebalds that caught the attention of other dog lovers, & in particular, Margot Eskens, a famous singer who purchased two of these tricolor puppies.

Even that might have been the end of it had interest in the dogs not grown beyond German borders. As the breed’s popularity grew, so did the need for organization. The Biewer Terrier Club of America was formed but despite its official sounding name, there was still significant in and outside the breed community about whether the Biewer was truly a separate breed or simply a color variant.
Who breeds two Yorkies and expects to get an entirely different breed out of them?
It wasn’t an easy time to own a Biewer Terrier. The dogs were called designer dogs, and their owners mocked. The AKC initially denied breed recognition applications and stated that it wouldn’t recognize as a breed dogs that were merely a color variant of an existing breed. Similar attitudes were present in Europe as well.
By 2007, Mars Wisdom Panel had become a leader in canine genetic testing & had one of the largest and most comprehensive databases of purebred dog DNA in the world.
Members of the Biewer Club reached out to see if Mars Veterinary would investigate whether the Biewer Terrier was genetically distinct from the Yorkshire Terrier and put the matter to rest. Owners provided blood samples, and by October 2009, Mars Veterinary had identified genetic markers for the purebred Biewer Terrier after testing over 30 lineages and more than 100 dogs. The pivotal study confirmed the Biewer as a genetically distinct breed—a first in canine history.
Genetic findings were fascinating. While most of the Biewer’s haplotypes (a set of DNA variants) are shared with Yorkshire Terriers, chromosome 20 stood out. A unique haplotype on this chromosome, found in over a third of Biewers, was absent in standard Yorkies. The Biewer’s signature tricolor coat was largely explained by the MITF gene which controls pigment distribution. Unlike Yorkies, many Biewers carry specific MITF variants associated with white spotting
Most importantly, the studies found that Biewers have healthy genetic diversity.
I love concluding with dramatic flair. The club resubmitted its application for recognition, now armed with the Mars Veterinary DNA study and additional genetic results.After reviewing the DNA evidence and the club’s revised breed history, the AKC accepted the Biewer Terrier.
The Biewer Terrier became the first to be recognized as a purebred as a result of a genetic study.

@dougfir @W6KME Oh, I heard this in real time in Altadena, California during the Eaton Fire. It was basically *** hit the fan. Every available unit was sent to the first facility hit by the fire, and there were no units left for anyone else, nor anyone to fight the fire. It was at least one contributing cause to the further disaster there, where more people lost their lives after that. One of many things that went wrong.

Back on May 24, seemingly no longer online: Btw, if Republicans cut Medicaid, be prepared to see disabled elderly homeless people. Medicaid pays for about 2/3 of America’s nursing home beds. When the money stops, those people are evicted, an ambulance is called, and they wind up in the ER. They have nowhere to go, no funding for another nursing home, and no emergency medical problem. Sooner or later they stop being boarded in the ER and wind up on the streets.
I know I keep saying it, but EVERYONE in the US needs to understand that if nursing homes close and the people in them don’t have the medicaid funding that pays for their housing and care, EVERYONE who uses a hospital anywhere in the US will suffer.
Obviously this is going to be awful for so many people. And too many Americans do need Medicaid in old age.
But the spend and give away your assets so you can use Medicaid for final years, never made sense to me. If you can afford it, don't spend down the money so you CAN afford to pay for better options if needed.
A futher thought. More likely they will call the family to say come get your person, we're closing the facility at noon tomorrow. Those people with no family will get turned over to the county.
Got myself a Dell Latitude ~~E4310~~ E6410 and Thinkpad T510 for free, both with discrete Nvidia graphics soldered to the mainboard. I've installed Linux on them and just went with the nouveau driver since the proprietary Nvidia driver for such old cards is no longer in the Debian 12 repo. Not going to do anything cutting edge on them, but it does leave me wondering:
I read that I could, with some effort, install the proprietary driver manually. Am I missing out on anything at all without them, or is nouveau mature enough and the graphics old enough that I wouldn't notice?
Is nouveau with old discrete graphics better or worse than having just Intel's integrated graphics?
Does power consumption vary significantly between nouveau and proprietary drivers?

Answering myself after going down a rabbit hole with the T510:
The dGPU is the NVS 3100M, which does have some level of hardware acceleration support under nouveau, so at least it isn't draining power for zero benefit. However, the dGPU is unable to go past its lowest power state without manually manipulating /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/pstate (I did not try to) and I suspect that this is what kneecaps 3D performance. There should be a marked difference, but I won't be doing any serious work on these machines, so I'm leaving everything as-is.
This situation is worse than having just integrated graphics due to the inherent power consumption of the GPU core while unable to benefit from higher power states and other optimizations.
Power consumption is probably less, but for much worse performance. At least it is a much better fallback than leaving at maximum.
A later variant has the BIOS option to disable the dGPU, mine is an early variant with no options
1) No, you can't install the drivers manually if they aren't supported. Nvidia does rolling driver releases removing aged out hardware, and the drivers do not support new versions with older hardware. Same with Windows.
2) Nouveau is the only option you have as far as hardware acceleration goes, but if these are laptops, you'd be better off just using the Intel graphics, because that's what's available, and they are very power efficient.
3) Power consumption is immediately bad once you engage the Nvidia hardware. Disable it in the BIOS. You won't have better performance in any meaningful way, just horrible battery life, especially since these are devices so old the modern drivers won't support the hardware.
Are you sure? I know the successor the T420 supports disabling the graphics. I dont think my 410 ever had it though. It's under display settings in the bios. Not sure about dell though, they might not have had it.
Unfortunately, I'm only given a choice between Boot Display Devices under that menu.
edit: Apparently, there is a menu for it if the T510 is a later model with Optimus support. Early dGPU variants like mine are forced to use the discrete graphics, even if the BIOS is hacked to reveal the menu.
Perhaps just uninstalling Nouveau and falling back to the Intel driver, if it's already installed, is sufficient? Or if that doesn't work, worst case OP could blacklist Nouveau and and update initramfs? I'm just guessing as long as the Nvidia driver is never actually active perhaps that's enough to avoid excess power consumption.
OTOH there isn't much harm in OP keeping Nouveau enabled and seeing how things go though I'm in agreement with you, on an older laptop there's not much advantage to be gained with the older Nvidia hardware.
don't know about that latitude, but for the thinkpad you'd do well to disable the nvidia graphics in BIOS setup. intel graphics is adequate for daily stuff and you can actually use the thing as a mobile device i.e. on battery,
Honestly, if these laptops also have Intel gpus, just use these to do your 2D work. And if you feel adventurous, then install the 390 drivers as secondary, only for the apps that need computing (e.g. Blender). For anything else, just use Intel, they work great for both video and 2D desktop acceleration.
In my experience, nouveau is painfully slow and crashes constantly to the point of being virtually unusable for anything. The developers agree, as in the last couple months nouveau has been phased out of Mesa entirely. More recent Mesa versions now implement OpenGL on Nvidia using Zink on NVK, and the result is quite a bit faster and FAR more stable.
If your distribution currently still ships a Mesa version which uses nouveau, I would personally recommend you just stick with the Intel graphics for now.
One thing to keep in mind about older versions of the nvidia proprietary drivers is that they will only work with specific kernel versions (and specific X versions—not sure about Wayland). Once the driver series your card needs stops being updated, you can't update your kernel without patching the driver. Assuming you have the skills to patch the driver, or someone who does makes their patches public.
I went through this song-and-dance with a very old laptop that had a card of the NV40 generation as its only GPU (no integrated graphics). Eventually I did install nouveau on it, and used it for several years without any issues.
NVS 3100M has codename NV50 (Tesla), so you can see the feature matrix. nouveau.freedesktop.org/Featur… nouveau.freedesktop.org/PowerM… So you can see almost other things has been done but the power management especially Automatic Reclocking still unfinished. So the feature set and stability should be fine and the performance will be bad.

I think in a truly free market where anyone can create any video game using any franchise without being restricted by IP laws, live service games would be harder to sell because they would have to compete with non-live service games of the same franchise.
Why play the online only Diablo 3 by Blizzard when someone else can create their own Diablo that is playable offline?

Most video game industry regulations these days only occur because a lot of aspects of the modern game industry like lootboxes can be considered "gambling".
