This picture bothers me. Not because it features Vance Boelter the suspect in the shootings of two Minnesota legislators, but take a look at the police officers arresting him. Full blown tactical combat gear, right down to the night-vision and the unit patches velcroed to their shoulders.
There will come a time when it will be impossible to distinguish between soldiers and the police; not a good direction.
I also note the officers faces have been blacked out for this photo.

The set of maps shows a century of expulsion of Palestinians from their homeland.
Palestine has existed for millennia as a country under various overlords.
But Israel claims, disingenuously, that the land cannot properly be called "Palestinian".
Their reasoning? Much of the land in Palestine was state owned.
So, by such "logic", US-state-owned land cannot properly be called "American"

A U.S. Senate proposal to sell off public lands across 11 western states has been defeated: in no small part due to all the individuals and organizations who told their elected leaders that public lands need to stay in public hands. Over 100,000 messages were sent via The Nature Conservancy alone!
However, threats to U.S. public lands, including proposals to slash funding for essential programs that help maintain and restore them, continue. That is why our most powerful force is our voice!

When Fru-Fru whelped a litter sired by Darling that included a blue, white, & gold puppy, the breeders were floored. The parents were champion blue and tan Yorkshire Terriers that Werner & Gertrude Biewer had bred before. No previous litters had ever produced a tricolor puppy, and this one came out of nowhere. The Biewers had no way of knowing at the time that the puppy they would name “Snowflake” was the product of two parents who carried the recessive piebald gene.
All right: This particular dog is TOO cute.
We can't have a dog right now and I WANT one of these.
Most importantly, the studies found that Biewers have healthy genetic diversity.
I love concluding with dramatic flair. The club resubmitted its application for recognition, now armed with the Mars Veterinary DNA study and additional genetic results. After reviewing the DNA evidence and the club’s revised breed history, the AKC accepted the Biewer Terrier.
The Biewer Terrier became the first to be recognized as a purebred as a result of a genetic study.

Got myself a Dell Latitude ~~E4310~~ E6410 and Thinkpad T510 for free, both with discrete Nvidia graphics soldered to the mainboard. I've installed Linux on them and just went with the nouveau driver since the proprietary Nvidia driver for such old cards is no longer in the Debian 12 repo. Not going to do anything cutting edge on them, but it does leave me wondering:
EDIT
Answering myself after going down a rabbit hole with the T510:
/sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/pstate
(I did not try to) and I suspect that this is what kneecaps 3D performance. There should be a marked difference, but I won't be doing any serious work on these machines, so I'm leaving everything as-is.
One thing to keep in mind about older versions of the nvidia proprietary drivers is that they will only work with specific kernel versions (and specific X versions—not sure about Wayland). Once the driver series your card needs stops being updated, you can't update your kernel without patching the driver. Assuming you have the skills to patch the driver, or someone who does makes their patches public.
I went through this song-and-dance with a very old laptop that had a card of the NV40 generation as its only GPU (no integrated graphics). Eventually I did install nouveau on it, and used it for several years without any issues.

I think in a truly free market where anyone can create any video game using any franchise without being restricted by IP laws, live service games would be harder to sell because they would have to compete with non-live service games of the same franchise.
Why play the online only Diablo 3 by Blizzard when someone else can create their own Diablo that is playable offline?
Granted, it wouldn't be a perfect solution. There would probably still be some games as a service and some of them will pull the plug without providing any means to play offline/with dedicated servers, but a true free market without IP laws would probably make the situation better than it is now.
@beardalaxy
>it is much easier to get the government to force companies to do right by the consumer (which is NOT EVEN THAT HARD BTW) than it is to just let them take away games that people have paid for and provide no alternate solution
Sure, but this assumes that the government cares about you, and that they care about video games. Most video game industry regulations these days only occur because a lot of aspects of the modern game industry like lootboxes can be considered "gambling". I don't know if politicians care about "preserving art".
>even going as far as putting legal on their asses when they try to do stuff like reverse engineering servers and getting money for their efforts
That's not a free market.

Is your sofa showing signs of wear? Sofa upholstery can transform it without the need for a new purchase. But reupholstering is a complex task, and DIY isn't always the best approach. Here's when to hire a professional for a quality, lasting result.
Start by inspecting your sofa's frame. If it's not creaky, wobbly, or sagging, it's a great candidate for reupholstering. A sturdy frame with fresh fabric can feel like a new sofa at a fraction of the cost.
But reupholstering requires taking the sofa apart and putting it back together, which demands tools and skill. A professional can deliver a polished, durable result.
Verdict: If the frame is solid but the fabric's worn, professional sofa upholstery is often the way to go.
Some sofas have a unique charm—maybe a retro style or a shape that fits your room perfectly. If replacing it isn't an option, reupholstering can bring it back to life.
Preserving that design requires precision. A pro can ensure even padding, tight corners, and clean lines. A DIY job might leave you with lumpy cushions or a look that doesn't match the original.
Typing "cheap sofa upholstery" into a search engine might seem like a budget-friendly move, but bargain options often mean low-quality materials or sloppy work.
Quality upholstery includes strong foam, durable springs, and precise stitching. Pros can offer cost-saving options, like letting you provide the fabric or reusing existing padding, to keep costs manageable.
Tip: Request quotes from multiple upholsterers and ask about budget-friendly packages.
Reupholstering a sofa is a big job. It involves removing old fabric, cutting and sewing new material, and handling details like zippers or button tufting. Sofas are also heavy and awkward to maneuver.
A small project like a chair seat might be manageable, but a full sofa can quickly overwhelm a DIYer. Without experience, it's easy to end up with a messy result.
Started a reupholstery project and hit a snag? Maybe the fabric's misaligned or the cushions don't fit right. Upholstery is a skilled trade, and mistakes happen.
Professionals can often salvage a partial job or start over. Don't let a frustrating DIY keep you from a great sofa.
If your sofa is in a busy spot—like a family room or rental—it needs to withstand heavy use. Professionals use high-quality materials and techniques to ensure the upholstery lasts.
A DIY job might look fine initially, but if it wears out fast, you'll spend more fixing it later. Quality sofa upholstery is a smart investment.
DIY upholstery can be fine if:
But if the sofa matters or you want a polished result, go with a pro.
Some upholstery projects are DIY-friendly, but for complex or cherished pieces, a professional is often the better choice. Don't just hunt for cheap sofa upholstery—look for quality and value that will stand the test of time.
A well-upholstered sofa can transform your space, so make the choice that delivers the best results.
Learn the benefits and a step-by-step guide in sofa upholstery. Find out how to choose the right upholstery services for better results.Z.Mivins
