At this point, the way people talk about Hamas, it's like they aren't even talking about the real thing. They're talking about their internalized propaganda movie of Hamas.

This is true of both people who see them as a Bush era terror machine and people who see them as heroic freedom fighters who can do no wrong.

Hamas can only be understood from a rational perspective when considering the totality of the Israeli rule over the Gaza strip, the social movements that predated Hamas, the economic context Hamas took power in, the historical ties between Israel and Hamas, and their role in the second intifada.

The truth is that Hamas is a partisan militant organization that is a genuine multi-branched mass movement on the part of an oppressed and colonized population. Its military wing is also guilty of both wartime atrocities and collaboration with Israel at various points in its history. Both can be true at the same time.

They're very obviously a desperate reaction to Israeli oppression, though, were that oppression to suddenly cease, Hamas would not. I see them as very similar to the IRA of the 80s and 90s and similar strategies could apply such as providing a path to legitimacy through wider recognition. In the IRA's case, this primarily took the form of the Sinn Féin political party that, last I checked, remains strong.

This picture bothers me. Not because it features Vance Boelter the suspect in the shootings of two Minnesota legislators, but take a look at the police officers arresting him. Full blown tactical combat gear, right down to the night-vision and the unit patches velcroed to their shoulders.

There will come a time when it will be impossible to distinguish between soldiers and the police; not a good direction.

I also note the officers faces have been blacked out for this photo.

The parents were champion blue and tan Yorkshire Terriers that Werner & Gertrude Biewer had bred before. No previous litters had ever produced a tricolor puppy, and this one came out of nowhere. Curious about performance of nouveau on old laptops with discrete graphics

Got myself a Dell Latitude ~~E4310~~ E6410 and Thinkpad T510 for free, both with discrete Nvidia graphics soldered to the mainboard. I've installed Linux on them and just went with the nouveau driver since the proprietary Nvidia driver for such old cards is no longer in the Debian 12 repo. Not going to do anything cutting edge on them, but it does leave me wondering:

  • I read that I could, with some effort, install the proprietary driver manually. Am I missing out on anything at all without them, or is nouveau mature enough and the graphics old enough that I wouldn't notice?
  • Is nouveau with old discrete graphics better or worse than having just Intel's integrated graphics?
  • Does power consumption vary significantly between nouveau and proprietary drivers?

EDIT

Answering myself after going down a rabbit hole with the T510:

  1. The dGPU is the NVS 3100M, which does have some level of hardware acceleration support under nouveau, so at least it isn't draining power for zero benefit. However, the dGPU is unable to go past its lowest power state without manually manipulating /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/pstate (I did not try to) and I suspect that this is what kneecaps 3D performance. There should be a marked difference, but I won't be doing any serious work on these machines, so I'm leaving everything as-is.
  2. This situation is worse than having just integrated graphics due to the inherent power consumption of the GPU core while unable to benefit from higher power states and other optimizations.
  3. Power consumption is probably less, but for much worse performance. At least it is a much better fallback than leaving at maximum.
  • A later variant has the BIOS option to disable the dGPU, mine is an early variant with no options

One thing to keep in mind about older versions of the nvidia proprietary drivers is that they will only work with specific kernel versions (and specific X versions—not sure about Wayland). Once the driver series your card needs stops being updated, you can't update your kernel without patching the driver. Assuming you have the skills to patch the driver, or someone who does makes their patches public.

I went through this song-and-dance with a very old laptop that had a card of the NV40 generation as its only GPU (no integrated graphics). Eventually I did install nouveau on it, and used it for several years without any issues.

I think in a truly free market where anyone can create any video game using any franchise without being restricted by IP laws, live service games would be harder to sell because they would have to compete with non-live service games of the same franchise.

Why play the online only Diablo 3 by Blizzard when someone else can create their own Diablo that is playable offline?

Granted, it wouldn't be a perfect solution. There would probably still be some games as a service and some of them will pull the plug without providing any means to play offline/with dedicated servers, but a true free market without IP laws would probably make the situation better than it is now.

Sure, but this assumes that the government cares about you, and that they care about video games. Most video game industry regulations these days only occur because a lot of aspects of the modern game industry like lootboxes can be considered "gambling". I don't know if politicians care about "preserving art".

Challenges meeting new people without an Instagram account

I’ve been trying to meet new friends and new people to hang out with so have been going to a lot of social events.

I noticed that everyone seems to ask for my instagram account and when I say I don’t have one that connection kind of dies, and it feels too personal to ask for someone number when I just met them.

I don’t want to create an instagram because of the privacy invasions of meta but I also don’t want to feel left out when trying to make new connections. Anyone have any advice?

 The condition for a societal climate in which all these atrocities can be accepted as inevitable, as unavoidable, is the dehumanization of those who must suffer through war, genocide, and displacement.
 It is not just about a psychological mechanism to prevent losing one’s mind in the face of these horrors. In the devaluation and dehumanization of a large part of the global population, the continuity of colonial thinking and actions is revealed.

This brought about, through war and subjugation, the dominance of the so-called Western world and bourgeois society. War and subjugation remain the means by which this dominance is maintained.
 Ignorance towards the killing and domination of people is widespread throughout German society. We are witnessing a version of “reason” that, cold and unempathic, allows human lives to be devalued as “others” and separates this from one’s own existence. In this way, the status quo of a society where the dead are walked over to secure one’s own prosperity is upheld.

I'm sure this is going to sound weird but I kinda love the fact that as soon as my head hits my pillow I'm asleep within about 10 minutes. Probably less. This is something that has gotten easier for me as I've gotten older. Certainly when I was in my 30s or 40s this was not the case. At. All. I'm sure some of it has to do with the fact I don't have a TV in my bedroom. I'm sure that helps. But I do listen to podcasts. The past week I've been listening to the latest series of Curious Cases on BBC Sounds and those eps only last less than 30 minutes and yeah. I'm knocked out cold even before the intro is usually done most cases.
