@LightFIAR it doesn't always result in mecfs but I think studies are finding most people with long covid have the fatigue, post exertional malaise and other symptoms that go along with it and would tick the boxes.
@LightFIAR true, but as I understand other people experiencing fatigue dont have the post exertional malaise which was not always an essential criteria for mecfs diagnosis but is now. For some other people with fatigue exercise can help alleviate it. Hopefully the biological understanding keeps improving as fatigue generally as been really under researched.
@treehugger Well, that may be a serious problem with the definition of ME/CFS. PEM is quite real and seen indeed in many with LC and ME/CFS--but not ALL in either case. I never had PEM but the fatigue was also quite strong and debilitating in ways that are qualitatively different from the fatigue one gets when healthy. Like a window on the day's energy.
@LightFIAR I do think if you're that fatigued, there may be pem that is hard to identify? As pem is more obvious for me when I start to feel better and then do more than I usually do.
I suppose biologically we dont know how similar they are as we're only starting to understand biology of mecfs. The after effects of polio were similar to covid. It's commonly known it affected peoples movement including lungs but less commonly known how it caused fatigue in some people.
@treehugger Right--that's what I'm getting at. We need to interrogate each condition. My other guess is a lot of ME/CFS, once understood better, will show up as clusters caused by chronic infections (like long Flu, long Lyme, etc.) and other forms of ME/CFS will have etiologies that are more strictly auto-immune, for example.

I created my own antiviral protocol and either it resolved on its own (possible but unlikely) or that effort worked.
@LightFIAR nicotine seems to be both a treatment and a masker depending on the person. It impacts the neurotransmitters in the brain and can positively impact the immune system. I take it as patches which has become quite common.

@treehugger Eh--I'm not an AA junky. I did LOTS of drugs in my day and I don't fear it--I just learned to really despise tobacco. I suspect nicotine MAY be addictive but very often "addictive" is not as applicable when interventions are used therapeutically (e.g., opiates)....but something to look into. I'd say if the benefit outweighs the risk, addiction is a secondary issue that can be managed if the tx is no longer needed.

I am keen to put more effort into those types of things at some point as I've read about fasting and other supplements that help but at the moment a dissertation and jobs that have needed doing for ten years are priority.

There's been reaearch showing the benefits of the sun go beyond vitamin D. I have had low iron and will soon find out if six months of supplements have made a difference.

@treehugger Like any intervention, our "casual use" can be problematic as it may be salutary. Too much sun bad; blue light at night strains and hurts sleep. The good wavelengths may provide all sorts of benefits. In short--it's complicated but discernible what is helpful, innocuous or harmful. Real medicine would look at that complexity and address it; sure, one drug for a bug often works just fine. But often not.

1 - What is GNOME ? GNOME stood for GNU Network Modeling Environment at some point, which meant it was initially developed as a part of the GNU project. It was started by Miguel de Icaza in 1997, in reaction to the creation of the K Desktop Environment, which was, at the time, based on a non-free library.
2 - GNOME 1 The first version of GNOME was released in March of 1999. It sported a similar look to Windows and KDE? with a bottom panel, a task manager, and a main menu. APPLICATIONS SHIPPING GNOME 1.0 received 2 major updates in the next two years, namely GNOME 1.2, codenamed "Bongo", which focused on user experience, adding help and documentation, and new translations, and GNOME 1.4, "Tranquility, released in early 2001. 1.4 was a big release, introducing Nautilus, which managed the desktop, and served as the web browser and file manager.
3 - GNOME 2 GNOME 2 is still the longest running version of GNOME, with 2.0 releasing in June 2002. GNOME 2.0 revamped the whole desktop, basing itself on GTK 2, the next version of its base library. GNOME 2.0 introduced a lot of changes, adding font antialisasing, new icons and support for theming the stock icons, as well as streamlining the interface, removing some unused configuration options and making sure the interface was as accessible as possible. GNOME 2 introduced a dual panel setup, with the panel on top hosting the main menus and the system notifications, and the bottom one displaying the task manager as well as the virtual desktop switcher.
GNOME 2.0 was followed by 16 releases, one each month, lasting until GNOME 2.32, in september 2010. Notable highlights from these releases are the addition of a CD burner directly in Nautilus, replaced later by Brasero, a dedicated application, and a new spatial mode using one window per folder, the release of Epiphany, a GNOME web browser that still exists today and is the default on elementary OS, the creation of Evolution, a complete Outlook-like solution for email and calendar, the addition of a video player, Totem, and a document viewer, Evince.
GNOME 2 was the default on many distributions, most notably Ubuntu, during its whole cycle until XXXXX which switched to Unity, after the release of GNOME 3.
4 - GNOME 3 In April 2011, GNOME Shell 3.0 was released. Its goal was to unify the user experience, providing easier ways to start and maange applications and windows. Its first version was not that well received, some users indicating that "they forgot how stable and beautiful GNOME 2 was". GNOME 3 is still in use today, with version 3.30 being the current one at the time of this video's recording. GNOME 3.0 redesigned the whole experience. Gone were the panels of old, and the task managers, replaced by an all in one overview of activities, grouping shortcuts, open applications, and virtual desktops in one place. GNOME 3 came with a whole new theme called Adwaita, and most core GNOME applications were redesigned to better fit the new desktop metaphor.
Since these changes were not to the taste of everyone, some members of the community decided to fork the GNOME 2 codebase, and created MATE. Another group ran with GTK 3, but reimplemented the traditional desktop metaphor with GNOME shell extensions, eventually leading to the creation of Cinnamon.
GNOME 3 still pursued on with its new idea of how a desktop should operate, and received a lot of updates, going through 15 new releases, one every six months. Here are some highlights: GNOME 3.2 brought synchronization with online accounts, as well as a contacts manager, and the support for web apps, which wre going strong in 2011.
GNOME 3.4, released in march 2012, put Documents, Epiphany, and Contacts through a redesign to better integrate with the rest of the desktop, and added Applications menus, smooth scrolling support, as well as a ton of improvements in the looks department.
GNOME 3.8 added an applications view, displaying the most frequently used programs, as well as the ability to see all applications. It also introduced a GNOME classic experience, for those that wanted to return to the GNOME 2 desktop layout.
GNOME 3.10, released in september 2013 added a bunch of new applications, most notably GNOME Maps, GNOME Notes, GNOME Music and GNOME Photos, bringing the GNOME software collection to a whole new level.
GNOME 3.24 added night light, a feature elementary OS Juno has added recently, to help reduce eye strain by reducing the amount of blue light emitted by the screen, and GNOME calendar got a week view.
GNOME 3.26 revamped the settings application with a navigation sidebar, and added firefox account sync to epiphany, its web browser.
Finally, the latest version, 3.30, was released in september 2018, and greatly improved desktop performance, using fewer system resources. With it also came auto updates for flatpaks, and a new Podcasts application, as well as a ton of other improvements.

I have no issues with the way it is implemented, I have no issues with it at all. For context, I left Twitter to join the Fedi, and it has been great so far! I use Misskey for microblogging, PeerTube for uploading videos, and Lemmy for Reddit-style discussions. The Fediverse is amazing!
Except, idk, for the fact that it is too fragmented? I hope I am using the right words. Like, the current instance I am on does not have support for communities, so i have to do it the hard way and mention @fediverse@lemmy.world so that I can post here. It's a good workaround, considering it doesn't have built-in support for communities. But my point still stands. It's not a Lemmy/PieFed problem. It's mostly a fediverse problem. Implementing communities for every platform would help the Fediverse. Not only does it solve discoverability/algorithm issues of the Fediverse (since now when you follow a community, you get all posts from that community), but also it would interconnect every platform (Misskey, PeerTube, Mastodon, etc.)
Imagine you don't have to use your Lemmy account to check everything on Lemmy. Instead of creating channels in PeerTube, just post to an existing channel/community, and people subscribed to that channel/community can find you easily. I see this as an absolute win for everyone.
I understand this would require collaboration between all developers of all software. But hopefully, this is possible? Or am I asking for too much?

The developers of Fedi software have different philosophies. Some developers are just not interested in implementing and supporting all kinds of AP actors, kinds of media, ways of attaching media etc. Because they want their software to focus on a certain thing.
Others want to implement everything and interconnect with every platform.
i understand and respect that in every sense. However, i think i made my point. Idk about other softwares, but Misskey has been dabbling around with "Channels" for a while, but the thing is, they're not federated to this day. Hopefully they work more on this. @fediverse@lemmy.world
This is probably why it's not a focus for developers. If Mbin was some huge success, it would show demand for the feature, and more developers would prioritize it higher.

The issue here is that most developers and users are still thinking in terms of the siloed networks. We don't need "multiple, separate platforms". We need to get rid of the platforms! We need to build our tools around protocols.
The WWW was incredibly successful because anyone could whip up some HTML and publish a webpage. The "protocol" of structured text alongside with links was simple to understand, any browser could do it. The Social Web should work the same.

for some reason, i disagree with you. A LOT OF developers have different visions for their software. I think the fediverse is in a good place at this point. I just feel like communities need to be federated everywhere...
It looks like that first you need to be able to better articulate what do you mean "federating everywhere", because I can follow a Lemmy community from Mastodon just fine, and you seem to be on Misskey, and we are communicating just fine.

Lemmy -> Misskey works fine. It's Misskey -> Lemmy which is a bit of a problem, because Lemmy communities and Misskey channels are two different things. Misskey channels dont even federate server-to-server.
I respect the developer's choices, but if Misskey is going to implement something like channels, might as well federate them too...

If it was merely a Misskey problem, i wouldnt have made this post, so ill list my likes and problems one by one, i may have been vague with communication:
My likes: 1. Interconnected: i dont need to elaborate too much. One account, to all platforms... 2. Opensource: also not much elaboration. 3. Protocol centric, not platform centric...
My ONLY dislike: 1. Lack of definite communication: Misskey may be my favourite, but it sucks the most when it comes to federating with other instances. There is no upvote system, no favourites system, no saved posts system. I can only reply and send reactions, and those reactions may not even federate properly. Same when i was using Mastodon. There was no downvote system, crosspost, etc. The worst in my opinion is the fact that devs are trying their best to federate with each other but throught different ways. My point is, this discrepancy between platforms calls for standardized system.

There is no such thing as "upvote" on ActivityPub. This is an abstraction on top of the "Like" activity. If Misskey UI is geared only towards reactions and doesn't have a way for users to "like" something, this is a Misskey problem, not a Fediverse one.

And what people are trying to explain to you is that this "standardized system" already exists. ActivityStreams is the standard to define a vocabulary, and ActivityPub is the standard that defines what happens when data is sent between different servers.
The issue I am taking with your comment is that it seems that you are expecting developers to start backwards from an unified product vision and then build their way down to the standard. This only works well when you have one single entity controlling everything. It's the "Apple Way" of developing products.
I really don't mind having a separate account for Lemmy and Mastodon. It's not pleasant to force different types of content into different website formats, even if the implementation is "ideal".
That said, I am surprised Misskey doesn't allow you to follow @fediverse@lemmy.world as you would follow a user, Mastodon allows this (it's not as good as viewing inside Lemmy but it does work).
Yeah same. The way I think about federation is in a kind of per “product” approach. That’s a piece of software can be run by anyone and all communicate and work as a whole is the main benefit. Cross compatibility between “products”/software is just an added bonus, but not necessary
Even more than per product, it's generally per category of products. You can run Lemmy, Mbin, or PieFed and get access to the Threadiverse. The devs actually do a good job with the interop when it fits the format of their site.

It makes me mad how many people refused to leave Twitter, or even just diversify to posting on other platforms, even if they're supposed to be left leaning politically...
GamesDoneQuick for example, they always say "trans rights" and yet their only social media account was on Twitter, until they joined Bluesky just 5 months ago and they still post on both. I don't get it. They could've made a Bluesky or Mastodon account years ago, even if they keep posting to Twitter just mirror your posts!
I tried mbin (registered an account for my brother). The UI isnt that bad, UI is actually well-built, i think what scared me was the the different terminologies. On mbin, you have magazines instead of communities, and microblog instead of posts. But it's not that it's bad, youll get used to it.
The disorganised yet connect nature of the fediverse is something we'll have to get used to. It's like how we all can appreciate different cultures from different countries around the world and be able to share and appreciate one another despite differences in culture. The real problem isnt with the Fediverse, it's with how culturally "bland" social media is now...
Ive checked the repo too, but since ive just started with coding, i do not understand anything... ill try my best to contribute however i can, really want to see mbin continue the legacy...
i just checked your full conversation on your instance (misskey doesnt support edited posts) Misskey does support following the community, its just not done elegantly. All replies from the community show up on my home page, which isnt great.
For now, ill stick with misskey till i find a worthy contender, just love msky reactions too much (too goofy lol, with sfx and all)

Ill just make my own software, combining Peertube+Lemmy+Misskey into one instance, maybs even Matrix... and if i cant, just not bother complaining then. Peertube videos, Lemmy posts and Mastodon / Misskey, etc. (called mircoblogs in the UI) On the microblog side mbin still has a long way to go to be perfect, right know you just know that it is not the primary focus.
Mbin is written in php together with the smyfony framework. We always welcome new devs and I'll do my best to answer any questions that will arise 😀
In the branch(not torishiro) , it supports editing, but the editing function may cause problems in fedi propagation, such as the remote end does not update in real time or does not update. So this instance didn't start this function.

There are different platforms that serve different uses. Using a common protocol enhances development and growth, and the flexibility of the protocol lets developers build on it without reinventing the wheel.
I have an issue with Fediverse, Lemmy to be exact. The platform is allowing an outside tool that was built for a mod or admin of a community to see votes, how people vote, but it is being exploited by users to spy/dox/harass, gang-up, and use as a tool to exploit other users nefariously. The tool is called Lemvotes. You can access the portal here. Here is a quote from a user (go $fsck yourself @ lemmy.world) who exploits this sharing how to use it with other users;
There’s a few ways of seeing votes. IMO they should be visible all the time. Moderators can see the votes of posts and comments in the subs they moderate. Admins can see all votes federated to their instance. Users have to use a separate tool for it. In this case I used Lemvotes.
This tool, imo, should be banned, or the platform to be "patched" to only allow this to work for admins, not users who abuse it.
There is no such thing as a "vote" in ActivityPub/ActivityStreams. This idea of "up/down votes" is just an abstraction of a message saying "Actor A liked B", where B is an Post/Comment (and a post/comment itself just being an abstraction of ActivityStreams objects).
That is to say: there is no way to selectively hide the content a message. If you want federation to work and you want people outside your own server to see your posts, then the server needs to broadcast the messages to anyone listening.
Tools like lemvotes are just exposing this information. There is no point in trying to censor the tool, because this information is available publicly, and any motivated person will be able to track this information.
If you are concerned about what people think of your "likes" and "dislikes", then do not use a public social media service and only communicate with provably secure communication tools.
I think this is less a problem of "nefarious bad actors" and more a problem of expectations. Honestly, I agree with the quoted comment: I think they should be visible all the time, like they already are on Mbin. I think it would help change the way people think about votes so that they don't expect Reddit-style anonymous votes and instead it's a more public Facebook/Twitter-style like system.
If you really want private votes, Piefed has feature that lets you anonymize your votes, but a determined bad actor could still deanonymize you. I think it's better to change expectations than to try to massage a fundamentally public platform into having private votes, but it's good there's an option for people since it's so highly requested.
I think what will eventually happen is much like what happened to email, it too was very fragmented feeling early on but more and more adopted it and more servers kept developing and popping up and then at some point more service providers became more similar than alike and then it became what it is now.
The tricky part is that the concept and usefulness of a federated network mostly only grows in the long run and looks like its not going anywhere in the short term much like email and that is always what makes people question its efficacy.
Participation in any and all forms is what establishes it more and more.
For me and the clients and fwiends I talk to the issue with the fediverse for them is the decentralised nature. Most of them are NOT tech inclined and the suggestion that they would have to choose a server and that choice will influence the experience is a deal breaker - pure and simple. To follow up then if they do join, the sheer lack of numbers baffles them and they quit
i think that not the problem with the fediverse, but the problem with how wehave been cultured so far. We got the concept of emails, we should get used to this soon too...
most of those I talk to struggle with emails to be fair.... we are talking about the non techy people, I feel that is the real reason. Nothing I have seen about the fediverse helps displace the feeling you need to be more techy to use it

D'ailleurs que peut-être, si la vitesse de rotation augmente, c'est qu'on ne cesse d'extraire des ressources pour les placer au-delà de la surface et qu'on crée de ce fait un énorme volant d'inertie.
