Heifetz made it his iconic encore piece. Although I feel this recording isn't his best, was made a bit late in his career, and he maybe was a bit jaded about doing it yet again, you can still appreciate the mastery. When I was a kid I would lie under my mother's piano listening to Heifetz playing the Bach unaccompanied stuff on the old LP.

Listen about 25 seconds in to hear him play a melody line sounding as though that were the only thing he was playing despite all the stuff going on around it. Listen for variety of volume and tonal quality in different sections. IMO he distinguishes the effects better than anyone else before or since.

Heifetz' playing was unique in many ways. I have read interviews with famous violinists who said that when listening to recordings of other top violinists playing they were not really sure who it was but with Heifetz there was never any mistake.

Here is a more contemporary and perhaps more accessible version by the wonderful Hilary Hahn. Where Heifetz frequently played Bach at what most performers would consider high speed, Hahn's rendition is probably slower than average.

Italy: Anti-Anarchist Police Operation in Massarosa


At dawn on Wednesday, June 25 in Massarosa (in the province of Lucca), there was a search at the home of an anarchist, in connection with the investigation carried out by the Bologna prosecutor’s office for the burning of two railway police cars, which took place in Rimini on April 20, 2023 (see here). The action was carried out in solidarity with Chilean anarchists Monica and Francisco, who were soon to be tried for several bombings in Santiago, Chile, and with Alfredo Cospito, who had just ended a six-month hunger strike.

The charges are articles 423 (arson), 270 bis para. 1 (subversive association with the purpose of terrorism), 110 (participation in a crime or misdemeanor) and 635 (damage). Fifteen anarchists, from different regions of Italy, are under investigation. The next day, the police showed up, still at dawn, at the home of another anarchist for a search in connection with some tags that had appeared in the Massa court during one of the hearings of the Scripta Scelera trial under art. 639 of the Penal Code (slight damage and defilement).

Israël est responsable de l’un des génocides les plus cruels de l’histoire moderne. »

Francesca Albanese a souligné que si les chiffres officiels font état de plus de 200 000 Palestiniens tués ou blessés, les experts médicaux estiment que le bilan réel est bien plus lourd. Elle a également qualifié de « piège mortel » la « Fondation humanitaire à Gaza » – nouveau mécanisme d’aide mis en place par Israël « conçue pour tuer ou forcer à fuir une population affamée, bombardée, émaciée et vouée à l’anéantissement. »

Elle a mis en lumière les profits réalisés pendant la guerre : en vingt mois, les entreprises d’armement ont engrangé des bénéfices record en fournissant à Israël des armes utilisées pour bombarder Gaza. « Ces sociétés ont fait des profits proches des records en équipant Israël avec des armes de pointe qui ont permis de larguer 85 000 tonnes d’explosifs, soit six fois la puissance d’Hiroshima, pour détruire Gaza », a-t-elle déclaré.

Selon son rapport, la Bourse de Tel-Aviv a enregistré une hausse de 213 % depuis octobre 2023. « Un peuple s’enrichit, un autre est effacé », a-t-elle résumé.

Elle a accusé Israël d’avoir transformé cette guerre en laboratoire d’expérimentation militaire, testant de nouvelles armes, systèmes de surveillance personnalisés, drones létaux et radars.

La vulnérabilité de la Palestine en ferait un « laboratoire idéal pour le complexe militaro-industriel israélien ».

Albanese a nommé 48 acteurs économiques, fabricants d’armes, banques, entreprises technologiques, multinationales de l’énergie et institutions académiques qu’elle accuse d’être directement liés à « une économie de l’occupation » qui soutient les actions israéliennes.

« Des armes et des systèmes de données brutalisent et surveillent les Palestiniens. Des colonies s’étendent, financées par les banques et les assureurs, alimentées par les énergies fossiles, et normalisées par des plateformes touristiques, des chaînes de supermarchés et des institutions universitaires », a-t-elle dénoncé.

Elle a rappelé qu’en droit international, même un lien minime avec ce système implique une responsabilité claire. « Il existe une responsabilité prima facie pour chaque État et entité commerciale de s’abstenir totalement ou de mettre fin à toute relation avec cette économie de l’occupation. »

Francesca Albanese a appelé les États à des mesures audacieuses : « Les États membres doivent imposer un embargo complet sur les armes à Israël, suspendre tous les accords commerciaux et relations d’investissement, et garantir que les entités impliquées soient tenues légalement responsables de leur participation à de graves violations du droit international. »

Elle a également exhorté les entreprises à agir : «Les entités commerciales doivent immédiatement cesser toute activité et rompre tout lien contribuant directement aux violations des droits humains et aux crimes internationaux contre le peuple palestinien. »

Albanese a conclu en s’adressant à la société civile: « Les syndicats, avocats, ONG et simples citoyens doivent encourager les entreprises et les gouvernements à changer de comportement, en exigeant des boycotts, désinvestissements, sanctions et poursuites judiciaires. La suite dépend de nous tous. »

Internal microphone not being detected pleaseee helppp

Hello all- I am seeking help trying to figure out why my internal microphone isn't being detected. I have followed a lot of troubleshooting audio guides such as this one and none of it has worked.

I'm on Pop_OS, with wayland, on an Asus laptop,

Okay, so this is one of Asus's consumer models that fits in the "Windowstop" category, meaning a lot of the hardware is going to be windows-only for various reasons.

It's got an ALC272 which IS supported, but that doesn't mean the microphone will be, especially if it's on the USB bus for whatever reason.

Couple questions:

1) Do other microphones work, just not internal?
2) Does your volume control work as expected
3) Does the webcam work, and does the internal microphone work only when the webcam is engaged?
4) What do apps like Discord or Zoom detect as available for your inputs?

As a test, install pavucontrol and qasmixer. Open pavucontrol, and check ALL the input settings (there are many combos). If nothing there shows activity, launch qasmixer, select the 'hw' view on the right, then try selecting different mixers and see if one finally clicks.

If any of these are successful, your mic is detected, and your mixer settings are messed up so it's not being enabled as an input sink.

If none of these work, you're going to have to dig restart, then run sudo dmesg and grep through looking for information regarding audio devices, or similar errors to see if it can't detect it.

From the product specs, it looks like it might have Harmon Kardon speakers, which may also tie into the microphone, and that's going to be problematic if it's a USB device for a number of reasons I won't dive into. Overall, this model just seems to be problematic from digging around. Example: reddit.com/r/ASUS/comments/160…

Crash

  1. other microphones work but the quality is bad
  2. volume control works as expected
  3. Webcam works just no sound.
  4. when i go on zoom or discord there is no available inputs

the internal mic used to work but then I had to do some update and now its not.

Is there a chance that there is some config file that is blocking something? like i made some kind of setting in a config file that is making this happen?

Audio devices can have multiple modes or "profiles" that determine what they do.

If I set my headset to one of the options that doesn't have "+ Mono Input" the mic stops working and doesn't even show up in settings and apps anymore. Same if I use the "Stereo Output" mode on my internal sound card. They must be set to a mode with both output and input enabled to work.

I can see this from "Sound" in my KDE settings, but you can also configure this in the "Configuration" tab of pavucontrol.
