Is it the fact that they haven't been at war since the 70s, or that China has had the fastest rise in the standard of living the humanity has ever seen, the fact that China is actively helping Global South develop, or perhaps that China is the only major nation actually transitioning off fossil fuels in a meaningful way?
Its an interesting point; people in Taiwan might differ on your notion of war avoidance (although as yet not happened, obviously); helping the Global South is really (like the US' prior work) hardly disinterested, but that, of course is politics, and while the green transition is notable they're still high up on the lost of emitters (by virtue of the economy's size).... but I agree, there is little specific about the danger of China that one might not also say about the USA!

@Colman I think you're absolutely right, at the end of the day what matters is China does going forward. I agree it's easy for us to end up in our own bubbles and end up with very different understanding of the world based on the information we consume.

This has been a very intense week. Monday brought a meeting with some fairly impactful news. Nothing I can't handle, but it will certainly influence the next 12 months. Tuesday was a demanding day, and on Wednesday, I tried to take it easier, but there was no way. Thursday involved delivering some items to a client, and the nice satisfaction of coming home with their baked goods. Yesterday was another tough day, getting home at midnight. All of this, of course, was on top of my normal work. Additionally, there were two situations that disappointed me: one I expected, the other absolutely not. All of this meant that the nice plans I had in mind for today evaporated because my energy was extremely low. But, as often happens, I managed to put two ideas together. One was already in motion, but I'm adapting it for new uses. The other is a consequence of the events that happened these past few days, plus something else that's been in the pipeline for a while. sure. Everything's always relative. Maybe I didn't express my feelings in the proper way - I was complaining about the week while being grateful for the outcome - me doing stuff I like, to relax, after a long and full week.
@Stefano Marinelli I'm dealing with a toe wound that won't heal, two of three broken cars, when my eldest son first moved out of our house, he got a dog but then ended up moving where they weren't allowed, so we took care of here for a decade, then he bought a house while he could have her, now she's dying of cancer. We're going up to visit before she gets so bad she needs to be euthanized. But we're still here, and save for his dog (which was for all intents and purposes our dog for a decade), life goes on.

@Jens_Rasmussen I'm not a drinker so my view is definitely limited, but from what I've tried, some ciders are ok, but a pure apple cider tends to be very sour, sweet rums are both way too sweet and throat burning, flavored beer that's popular now is worse than regular beer, mulled wine is pretty good. I haven't tried mead yet though.

LOL, I actually managed to do this with a broken spacebar. Half the bar was missing, so I took a completely different model scrap keyboard that was water damaged, carefully cut it in half, secured that with the original half with a couple paper clips and epoxy, and somehow even managed to make the stabilizer bar underneath line up and work.

Pytorch is a really neat DSL for machine learning stuff, but also wow it's very a research platform. Impossible things are medium-hard, but also things that should be easy like "fine-tune a pretrained image classifier on a corpus, using mainstream tuning techniques and configuration" are also medium-hard.
Anyway, so far I have successfully gotten this binary classifier to say that one random image I have is -1.438 of whatever it is the classifier is evaluating. Which is nothing, because I had to replace the neural net's classifier head and so while most of the network has some pre-training, the final output layer is "take all the knowledge distilled from the image, and return a random guess".
Next step, let's see if I can figure out how to implement a training loop...

NES mapper programming sounds like shitposts or elaborate pranks. For example, MMC1. Super common chip, used on Metroid, Legend of Zelda, Bionic Commando.
To program it, you simply write five bytes to the upper half of the memory space. The LSB of each byte is added to a shift register and then for the 5th byte the 13th and 14th bit of the address are used to determine which register to program.
this is the kind of thing you'd expect to happen as part of some kind of tricky DRM system but no, the NES's DRM is implemented completely differently (and outside of the view of the CPU).
