Do you have some custom repos enabled? Seems like you're trying to update a package that has a dependency not available with whatever is in the default repos. Disable all custom repos and then see if it updates first.

If you have an Ultimate 64, the one that's the whole system, tell me: how hard is it to change the KERNAL and CHARGEN ROM images used? I like the PET/VIC-20 character font and I demand JiffyDOS in all my Commodore systems.
It's very easy just put the roms you want to use on your usb stick, copy them to the internal flash memory on the U64. There are menu options that you can use to pick the kernal, chargen and basic roms. Then reboot. I have used it to use the jiffydos roms and the mega65 basic, kernal and chargen roms as well.
So the video output is either HDMI or the 8 pin video din port. This is selectable from within the U64 menus. The din port can be configured to be either the normal chroma/luma or RGBS. I believe VGA is really RGBHV. Here is a link to the original docs. web.archive.org/web/2021040703…
The new documents don't go into the details of the video pins for some reason. He improved the setup and config in the doc but removed all the nerdy stuff.
@daman_ab I believe mine is 576p50 raw HDMI output and its up to TV upscaler how badly it fucks it up (I have my TV set to keep ratio which ends up with black bars - but that’s TV side thing). I haul the thing to retro meetups and never ever found a screen that would not display it correctly or have lag.
Very easy, you only have to put ROMs there and select them. I am not super sure but I think mine has few swappable slots for ROMs and cartridges (have U64+ prev gen).
Btw. is that new cringe website Perifractic? I chuckled on katakana merch, it just does not belong so much. Commodore wasn’t really successful nor known here in Japan at all.

As I see it as completely new product building. Commodore would probably never go that way and in parallel universe where Apple did not make it is probably selling nowadays computers (be it ARM, RISC or x86, maybe niche in way Amigas were). Retro based on FPGA is really not for masses in 25. Still its awesome thing and I love to have it, but it is not Commodore.
@blami From what I gather, this is a launch product, to get them better funded and streamlined, a shakedown cruise. What I'm getting from them is a desire to make something new with retro inspiration, something we haven't got already.
@blami I'm sure they'll make mistakes, but I see reason to be generally hopeful about this one. The people involved are mostly top-tier. I don't think that this is their "this is what we make now" product, I think this is "we needed to be selling something real immediately" product, to be followed up with what they actually want to make.

I mean I would not mind being able to open terminal window with BASIC and writing some incantation would allow me draw stuff over the current screen without learning what is window handle, message loop and context. Like seriously, it is a decent FPGA based platform that by all appearances will be quite open and hackable and fun that is all you can really ask for from it at this point Nobody is going to set up a foundry to make 6510s and VIC IIs and SIDs or make new CRT monitors.
That is my main doubt about it...I think the product is great but the expectations evoked by the brand by anyone who even cares about it anymore might just be unachievable

@VeSpectagles I wouldn't make myself dependent on whether the *key instance is by the same admins as the lemmy instance. The *key softwares are generally recommended if you want a lot of functions and a modern interface. I particularly like the Antennas / News Pickers, with which the content can be structured very well according to your own search terms (a kind of topic-specific timelines). The interaction with Lemmy also works well. There is an instance list for #Sharkey and #Iceshrimp instances here

In reality, we are caught somewhere between a kleptocracy (a government ruled by thieves) and a kakistocracy (a government run by unprincipled career politicians, corporations and thieves that panders to the worst vices in our nature and has little regard for the rights of American citizens).
For years now, the government has been playing a cat-and-mouse game with the American people, letting us enjoy just enough freedom to think we are free but not enough to actually allow us to live as a free people.
In other words, we’re allowed to bask in the illusion of freedom while we’re being stripped of the very rights intended to ensure that we can hold the government accountable to abiding by the rule of law, the U.S. Constitution.
This is no longer America, land of the free, where the government is of the people, by the people and for the people.
Rather, this is Amerika, where fascism, totalitarianism and militarism go hand in hand.
Freedom no longer means what it once did.
This holds true whether you’re talking about the right to criticize the government in word or deed, the right to be free from government surveillance, the right to not have your person or your property subjected to warrantless searches
by government agents, the right to due process, the right to be safe from militarized police invading your home, the right to be innocent until proven guilty and every other right that once reinforced the founders’ commitment to the American experiment in freedom.
Not only do we no longer have dominion over our bodies, our families, our property and our lives, but the government continues to chip away at what few rights we still have to speak freely and think for ourselves.
In reality, however, we are only as free as a government official may allow.
We only think we live in a constitutional republic, governed by just laws created for our benefit.
Truth be told, we live in a dictatorship disguised as a democracy where all that we own, all that we earn, all that we say and do—our very lives—depends on the benevolence of government
and corporate shareholders for whom profit and power will always trump principle. And now the government is litigating and legislating its way into a new framework where the dictates of petty bureaucrats carry greater weight than the inalienable rights of the citizenry.
With every court ruling that allows the government to operate above the rule of law, every piece of legislation that limits our freedoms, and every act of government wrongdoing that goes unpunished,
we’re slowly being conditioned to a society in which we have little real control over our lives.
As Rod Serling, creator of the Twilight Zone and an insightful commentator on human nature, once observed, “We’re developing a new citizenry. One that will be very selective about cereals and automobiles, but won’t be able to think.”
Indeed, not only are we developing a new citizenry incapable of thinking for themselves, but we’re also instilling in them a complete
and utter reliance on the government and its corporate partners to do everything for them—tell them what to eat, what to wear, how to think, what to believe, how long to sleep, who to vote for, whom to associate with, and on and on.
In this way, we have created a welfare state, a nanny state, a police state, a surveillance state, an electronic concentration camp—call it what you will, the meaning is the same:
in our quest for less personal responsibility, a greater sense of security, and no burdensome obligations to each other or to future generations, we have created a society in which we have no true freedom.
these are mile markers on the road to a fascist state where citizens are treated like cattle, to be branded and eventually led to the slaughterhouse.
Freedom, or what’s left of it, is being threatened from every direction.
The threats are of many kinds: political, cultural, educational, media, and psychological. However, as history shows us, freedom is not, on the whole, wrested from a citizenry. It is all too often given over voluntarily and for such a cheap price:
This is part and parcel of the propaganda churned out by the government machine.
That said, what we face today—mind manipulation and systemic violence—is not new. What is different are the techniques used and the large-scale control of mass humanity, coercive police tactics and pervasive surveillance.
We are overdue for a systemic check on the government’s overreaches and power grabs.
By “government,” I’m not referring to the highly partisan, two-party bureaucracy of Republicans and Democrats. Rather, I’m referring to “government” with a capital “G,” the entrenched Deep State that is unaffected by elections, unaltered by populist movements and has set itself beyond the reach of the law.
For years now, we have suffered the injustices, cruelties, corruption and abuse of an entrenched government bureaucracy that has no regard for the Constitution or the rights of the citizenry.
We have lingered too long in this strange twilight zone where ego trumps justice, propaganda perverts truth, and imperial presidents—empowered to indulge their authoritarian tendencies by legalistic courts, corrupt legislatures and a disinterested, distracted populace—rule by fiat rather than by the rule of law.
Where we find ourselves now is in the unenviable position of needing to rein in all three branches of government—the Executive, the Judicial, and the Legislative—
—that have exceeded their authority and grown drunk on power.
We are the unwitting victims of a system so corrupt that those who stand up for the rule of law and aspire to transparency in government are in the minority. This corruption is so vast it spans all branches of government.
The predators of the police state are wreaking havoc on our freedoms, our communities, and our lives. The government doesn’t listen to the citizenry, it refuses to abide by the Constitution,
which is our rule of law, and it treats the citizenry as a source of funding and little else.
The American kleptocracy has sucked the American people down a rabbit hole into a parallel universe in which the Constitution is meaningless, the government is all-powerful, and the citizenry is powerless to defend itself against government agents who steal, spy, lie, plunder, kill, abuse and generally inflict mayhem and sow madness on everyone and everything in their sphere.
This dissolution of that sacred covenant between the citizenry and the government—establishing “we the people” as the masters and the government as the servant—didn’t happen overnight. It didn’t happen because of one particular incident or one particular president. It is a process, one that began long ago and continues in the present day, aided and abetted by politicians who have mastered the polarizing art of how to “divide and conquer.”
Unfortunately, there is no magic spell to transport us back to a place and time where “we the people” weren’t merely fodder for a corporate gristmill, operated by government hired hands, whose priorities are money and power.
Our freedoms have become casualties in an all-out war on the American people.
Through every fault of our own—our apathy, our ignorance, our intolerance, our disinclination to do the hard work of holding government leaders accountable to the rule of law,
our inclination to let politics trump longstanding constitutional principles—we have been reduced to this sorry state in which we are little more than shackled inmates in a prison operated for the profit of a corporate elite.
If we continue down this road, there can be no surprise about what awaits us at the end.
For there to be any hope of real change, we must change how we think about ourselves, our fellow human beings, freedom, society, and the government.
The following principles may help any budding freedom fighters in the struggle to liberate themselves and our society.
First, we must come to grips with the reality that the present system does not foster freedom. The government’s primary purpose is maintaining power and control. It’s an oligarchy composed of corporate giants wedded to government officials who benefit from the relationship. In other words, it is motivated by greed and exists to perpetuate itself.
Second, voting is no guarantee of liberty. Voting is a way to keep the citizenry pacified. That’s why the government places so much emphasis on the reassurance ritual of voting. It provides the illusion of participation while maintaining the status quo. As Jordan Michael Smith, writing for the Boston Globe, concludes about the American government, “There’s the one we elect, and then there’s the one behind it, steering huge swaths of policy almost unchecked.
Elected officials end up serving as mere cover for the real decisions made by the bureaucracy.”
Third, question everything. Don’t assume anything the government does is for the good of the citizenry. As James Madison warned, “All men having power ought to be distrusted to a certain degree.” Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.
Fourth, there is little hope for any true resistance if you are mindlessly connected to the electronic concentration camp.
Remember, what you’re being electronically fed by those in power is meant to pacify, distract, and control you.
Fifth, be wise and realize that there is power in numbers. Networks, coalitions, and movements can accomplish much—especially if their objectives are focused, practical and nonviolent—and they are very much feared by government authorities.
Sixth, as always, change must start with “we the people.”
I’ve always advised people to think nationally but act locally. Yet it can be hard to make a difference locally when the local government is as deaf, dumb and blind to the needs of its constituents as the national government.
Seventh, local towns, cities and states can nullify or say “no” to federal laws that violate the rights and freedoms of the citizenry. When and if you see such federal laws passed, gather your coalition of citizens and demand that your local town council nullify such laws.
If enough towns and cities across the country would speak truth to power in this way, we might see some positive movement from the federal governmental machine.
Clearly, it’s time to clean house at all levels of government.
We have been saddled with the wreckage of a government at all levels that no longer represents the citizenry, serves the citizenry, or is accountable to the citizenry.
It doesn’t matter whether you’re talking about the federal government, state governments, or local governing bodies: at all ends of the spectrum and every point in between, a shift has taken place.
“We the people” are not being seen, heard or valued.
We no longer count for much of anything beyond an occasional electoral vote and as a source of income for the government’s ever-burgeoning financial needs.
Everything happening at the national level is playing out at the local level, as well: the violence, the militarization, the intolerance, the lopsided governance, and an uneasy awareness that the citizenry have no say in how their communities are being governed.
You’ve got a better chance of making your displeasure seen and felt and heard within your own community. But it will take perseverance and unity and a commitment to finding common ground with your fellow citizens.

I have absolutely no idea where that comes from. Do you all sleep like Dracula? My bedding is usually tussled about within minutes of me laying in bed. Blankets balled up for knee support, one leg sticking out for temperature venting. I couldn't imagine sliding under the covers and laying perfectly supine like Vladimir Lenin.
It doesn't take much time, so you might as well do it.
I find any task not worth my time to be a waste, so unless it has a purpose, it is actively infuriating to do.

Given that this is an entirely subjective reason, I can't exactly "disagree" with it. But if there was someone I trust enough to be in my bedroom, I'm not going to waste my time convincing you that I do not, in fact, sleep in my bed.
Not to mention that if you want to nap or even sit on the end of the bed, you have to make it again. It is an incredibly unstable artwork, making me avoid using my bed unless I really need to.
If you make your bed, I have no judgment for you. Just like people who fold designs into the ends of their toilet paper. I couldn't imagine caring about something like that, but it literally doesn't affect me at all, so go nuts.
But I think we should be honest and call it what it is: some kind of shameful cleaning ritual that is probably some vestigial military chore, and I want nothing to do with it.
I had no idea people past my grandmother's generation still felt compelled to make their bed... I thought we had collectively grown past the compulsion to do pointless tasks like this, along with other wastes of time like manually wiping the dishes or ironing everything including the dish cloth. Maybe that's just me, though.
(I'm not talking about doing it if you want to because you like it, only about the expectation that you should be doing it no matter what.)

To understand how Ansar Allah-led Yemen defeated an apparently superior military force, led by Washington, and then directly confronted the Israelis and their sponsors in the Red Sea, we should return to the values and ideology of the movement.
Ansar Allah ideology comes from the Quranic Project of Hussein Badr al-Din al-Houhti, who was killed in 2004 during the six northern wars, carried out by the late President Saleh, following a green light from US President George W. Bush (Root 2013), as part of his “war on terror”; even though Saleh himself had been linked to Al-Qaeda (Jordan 2015). This Quranic Project shares values with many independence movements, some with the Iranian Revolution, along with some of its own distinct features.
Ansar Allah is a movement, not a party like Hezbollah. Mohammed Ali al-Houthi, head of the Supreme Revolutionary Committee (SRC), said, “The revolution is every member within the … Yemeni fabric who rejects corruption and … upholds values and freedom, rejects tyranny, guardianship, invasion and occupation and resists aggression, siege and blind subservience” (Almahfali and Root 2020; Sputnik Arabic 2018). The Yemeni people “are a people who reject injustice, humiliation, subjugation, arrogance and conceit. They are a people who, by nature, carry within their culture and awareness a revolutionary sense … [they] have always rallied and moved with those who reject colonialism … those who stand with the invader are rejected and denounced and remain agents and mercenaries in the eyes of the popular majority” (Sputnik Arabic 2018).
This movement grew with a charismatic leader, Sayyed Hussein Badr al-Din al-Houthi, but it is not a personality cult. Sayyed al-Houthi “had a leadership personality, everyone that knew him loved him,” said Abdulkareem Jadban, an MP from Saada. “He urged people to face the [North] American hegemony after 9/11” (Root 2013). His ideas remain important, as should be obvious from the strong growth of Ansar Allah in the 20 years since Hussein’s death.
We could speak of the values of Ansar Allah under six themes: the defense of an independent nation and culture; Islamism through Quranic values; a culture of resistance in the face of hegemonic attack; clear identification of the enemy; social inclusion and avoidance of war; and the persistence of Yemeni customary law and tribal governance.
Understandings of these values are particularly important in view of several Western war myths that Ansar Allah are “Houthi rebels” who are “Iran’s proxies” and part of a “Shia crescent” destabilizing the Arabian Peninsula and the region. These myths disguise the revolution of 2011-2014, underline the refusal to recognize the new government in Sanaa, and help bolster UNSC resolutions, which legitimized the dirty war and siege of the country.
Some of the better Western analyses of Ansar Allah appreciate its local origins and that it has been influenced, but not determined or controlled, by the Iranian revolution (Gordon and Parkinson 2018); and that it builds on nationalist and republican roots which recognize religious traditions and authority (Almahfali and Root 2020). But most tend to turn against the Yemeni revolution for its Islamism and incompatibility with bourgeois liberalism (i.e. Anglo-American corporate rule with a semblance of individual liberties).
Despite that deep prejudice, there is huge popular interest in how Ansar Allah-led Yemen defeated the US-Saudi-Emirati aggression and then came fearlessly to the direct defense of the Palestinian people under attack by the Israelis in Gaza. I suggest the answers to these questions lie in popular support for Ansar Allah values. So what are those values and how are they seen in practice?
First, as an independence movement, Ansar Allah aims to protect and defend indigenous, inclusive Yemeni culture and values in the face of foreign intervention. This is a common theme of all anti-imperial and anti-colonial movements, including the Islamic Revolution of Iran.
The defense of independent cultures, values, and nations is a key global theme. We could go further, arguing that the central polemic today is not capitalism versus socialism or liberal democracy versus the rest, but rather a globalist dictatorship versus independent nations. In a supposedly post-colonial era, we still see this struggle for independence across Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Arab and Muslim world.
Anti-imperialism, anti-colonialism, and anti-Zionism – counter-hegemonic struggles – are all consequences of this drive for political, economic, and social independence. In Yemen, despite the important national unification of the 1990s, there remained a corrupt regime that collaborated with the imperial power and its agents, making use of sectarian groups to divide and rule the nation.
Second, Ansar Allah shares with the Iranian Revolution an Islamic foundation of independent values based on the Quran – humility, honor, self-sacrifice, social justice, and social inclusivity – values which inform and sit alongside nationalism, anti-imperialism, and anti-Zionism (Panah 2008: ch.3; Almahfali and Root 2020).
Ansar Allah, from its Zaydi roots, while recognizing the Prophet’s Holy Family (Ahlul Bayt) and the Sayyed lineage, does not share the Shia doctrine of Twelve Imams (including the Mahdi) nor does it accept the infallibility of Imams (Almahfali and Root 2020). Mandated struggle against the unjust rule is one feature that the Zaydi tradition has in common with the Shia. In the tradition of Zayd ibn Ali, true imams must fight corrupt rulers; but imams are neither divinely ordained nor infallible and this leads to greater jurisprudence in Islamic law, preventing the idea of an imamate or strict religious rule (Almahfali and Root 2020).
Sayyed Hussein was deeply impressed by Iran’s Khomeini and Lebanon’s Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah because of their firm principles. He said of Khomeini and Nasrallah that, in their application of Islamic values, “we do not notice the doctrinal side,” and so there is room for jurisprudence (Almahfali and Root 2020). So, while the historic sacrifice of Imam Hussein (a central Shia theme) has entered Ansar Allah’s broad Islamic tradition, other more secular or non-doctrinal themes have developed, such as Sayyed Abdul-Malik al-Houthi’s stress on nationalism and social justice.
Recognizing the legacy of the leader of the Iranian Revolution, Sayyed Hussein said, “Imam Khomeini was a blessing to the Arabs if they had wanted liberation from Israel.” Sayyed Khomeini was “a great leader with a correct vision and a strong people.” It has been said that Iran’s Islamic Revolution both “does and does not” influence Ansar Allah (Almahfali and Root 2020). Ansar Allah extends the Zaydi principle of “commanding what is just and forbidding what is wrong” (Almahfali and Root 2020).
Importantly, Ansar Allah also parallels Sayyed Khomeini in placing a similar emphasis on a pure Islam of “the downtrodden and humble … the barefooted” [Al-Mustadh’afin] as opposed to what he called “American Islam … the Islam of comfort and luxury … of compromise and ignominy, the Islam of the indolent” (ITF 2014) – following the Quranic declaration (al Qassas 28:5) of “our favour on the oppressed.”
That responsibility to the oppressed and downtrodden [Al-Mustadh’afin] was fundamental to both Sayyed Khomeini’s initiatives in support of Palestine and to Ansar Allah’s Red Sea operations, after the Resistance’s Operation Al-Aqsa Flood.
Nevertheless, Ansar Allah leaders have made it clear that Yemen’s governance is for Yemenis to decide. “There is no Iranian intervention in Yemen. and the Saudis can inspect the missiles [we fire] … they are purely Yemeni made … We reject any sort of foreign intervention either by the Saudis, the Americans, the Egyptians or the Iranians” (Mohamed Ali al-Houthi in Ya Libnan 2015).
Third, dedicated resistance is a step beyond simple claims of political independence. Resistance is a commitment in the face of a hegemonic attack. Ansar Allah stresses active defense of the nation and culture in the face of those who “occupy our countries and wage war against our religion” (Hussein Badr al-Din al-Houthi 2001b). That includes the duty toward other oppressed Arab and Muslim peoples, especially the Palestinians. One Ansar Allah leader explained to me: we oppose war, but fighting in self-defense and in defense of the oppressed is both permitted and mandated. This moral obligation to support the oppressed comes before political considerations and helps explain Ansar Allah’s unhesitating confrontation with the Israelis and the Anglo-Americans.
An Ansar Allah cultural leader explained to me that, historically, the Muslim communities in Yemen’s highlands, farther away from colonial invasions (mainly Zaydi), had maintained a stronger resistance to invading cultures than those (mainly Shafi) on the coast.
Secular parallels are made to stress the necessity of resistance and social transformation, in defense of indigenous culture. Mohamed Ali al-Houthi said, “The scale of the conspiracy [against Yemen] has pushed the people to engage in a long-term battle until … victory, just as revolutions around the world, including the Bolshevik Revolution in Russia, triumphed” (Sputnik Arabic 2018).
The steadfastness of Ansar Allah has become a thing of legend. They have repeatedly vowed to maintain their support for Gaza even after multiple bombing attacks by the Israelis and the Anglo-Americans (Abdul Malik al-Houthi 2025). Those Red Sea operations have established the Yemeni resistance as an icon for the world (Tuboltsev 2025). Even conservative British bodies recognize that the Yemenis are “diversifying their alliances and deepening their military capabilities, leveraging regional conflicts and pragmatic partnerships to expand their influence beyond the Iranian-led ‘axis of resistance’” (Ardemagni 2024). Hundreds of thousands of Yemenis have rallied in support of these commitments by Ansar Allah leaders (MNA 2025).
Fourth, clear identification of the enemy is a distinct emphasis in Ansar Allah’s ideology. Sayyed Hussein put this in the context of a world where North Americans elevated former collaborators like Osama Bin Laden and Saddam Hussein to the status of ‘enemies’ of the imperial powers, but these were false stories designed to fool people. “Thus they direct people towards imaginary figures and illusory danger.” We are in a “civilizational struggle,” and “the Jews know who really poses a threat to them,” and this is why in Iran they chant “Death to America, death to Israel” (Hussein Badr al-Din al-Houthi 2001a).
In this deceptive world, Yemen must clearly identify its enemies, including cultural enemies, so as to empower and focus the masses in their popular struggle. Hussein added we must “train ourselves and our children to carry enmity towards the enemies of God – the Jews and the Christians.” Borrowing from Iran but building its distinct Yemeni character, Hussein railed against the US attempts “to force their culture upon us, to occupy our countries and to wage a war against our religion” (Almahfali and Root 2020).
While Ansar Allah shares with Iran the slogans “Death to America, Death to Israel”, in their political sense of opposing those regimes, Sayyed Hussein also demanded recognition of the cultural assault from “Jews and Christians”. Has “the Ummah [Islamic community] reached a point where it cannot stand up to the Jews?” he asked. Quoting the Quran (Al Baqarah 2:120), he said, “Never will the Jews or the Christians be satisfied with you until you follow their religion” (Hussein Badr al-Din al-Houthi 2001a). By this, he means they force us to adopt their ideas and terminology.
Hussein spoke of the need to “train ourselves and our children to carry enmity towards the enemies of God – the Jews and the Christians. Enmity in Islam is positive and important. If you carry genuine enmity towards America and Israel, if the leaders carry genuine enmity, and if Muslims carry genuine enmity, then they will prepare themselves to be able to face the confrontation. But if there is no real enmity then they will not prepare” (Hussein Badr Din al Houthi 2001b).
The same confusion applies to opposing a particular Israeli regime rather than the usurping entity itself. Hussein said, in his time, they spoke of “Sharon’s government [referring to former Israeli PM Ariel Sharon] but not Israel … Israel is not considered a problem, not even its existence is seen as a problem. So they say Sharon’s government” (Hussein Badr Din al Houthi 2001b).
The cultural influence of these Western colonial cultures, beyond just the invading occupation projects and the Zionist entity, was therefore part of the enemy that sought to “wage war on our religion.” Hussein decried the colonization of Arabic and Islamic language so that, for example, “jihad” (in its original sense of a holy or spiritual struggle) has been virtually disqualified as an aim (Hussein Badr al-Din al-Houthi 2001b).
Fifth, Ansar Allah leaders have stressed their commitment to social inclusion within Yemen and their desire to avoid war. There is much evidence of this. Mohamed Ali al-Houthi said, “Yemen has not fired the first shot in the war … rather it is resisting and will triumph over the richest and strongest countries” (Sputnik Arabic 2018).
Recall that former President Ali Abdullah Saleh was the one who declared war against Ansar Allah and killed its leader Hussein in 2004. Nevertheless, after the Revolution and until the 2017 betrayal by Saleh, Ansar Allah included him in its Supreme Political Council. Many from the GPC, the main opposition party, are still included in Yemen’s revolutionary government. Others have defected to Ansar Allah from the Muslim Brotherhood. This is another reason why it is absurd to call the Sanaa government “Houthi rebels”.
Ansar Allah did not simply seize power in 2014; it filled a political vacuum left by the collapse of both Saleh’s regime and his transitional regime, plus the widespread rejection of the repartition proposals from the GCC (Popp 2015).
After the US-Saudi coalition declared war on the Sanaa Government, Ansar Allah leaders were ready for peace talks in 2015, without conditions. It was the puppet Hadi regime, which made demands that Ansar Allah surrender territory before any talks, which killed that early peace process (Ya Libnan 2015).
Sixth, the preservation of customary law and tribal governance continues to play an important role in Yemen and has long had a relation to state law, but its composition has changed since the rise of Ansar Allah (Worth 2016).
Tribal authority and mediation are used for everything from land disputes to justice over violent conflict (Mojalli 2015), and relations between local clan authorities have been a factor in the national war of liberation against the Coalition of Aggression and its sectarian agents.
It has been said, by some hostile sides to Ansar Allah, that their system of regional supervisors or mushrifin (Carboni 2021; Mugahed 2022) has weakened tribal authority.
Yet, principles of customary law seem to have remained well incorporated into Yemeni leadership and justice. In this way, traditional authority and many social norms remain embedded in Yemeni Islamic principles. For example, the use of the Yemeni dagger (jambiya) is regulated by both traditional and state law. It is often displayed, but there are penalties for withdrawing it or making threats with it.
In sum, Ansar Allah is a genuine, Indigenous Yemeni movement that led the only real and successful revolution of the so-called “Arab Spring”. It has been subject to dirty war and siege by Washington and its allies precisely because it is an independent movement. The Yemeni Revolution shares many values with the Iranian Revolution but remains a distinct revolutionary force and a key addition to the regional resistance, especially since the collapse of Damascus. The strength of the revolutionary government in Sanaa and its commitment to the Palestinians can best be appreciated through an understanding of the unique mix of Ansar Allah values and their mass support in Yemen.

I just learned that argv being const is not standard, because according to the spec it's supposed to be modifiable?
Why you'd modify your program arguments at runtime I have no idea, but hey, if that's the way it is, then that's the way it is.
With this extra context, what's now baffling to me is why I've had it as const char*[] for 16 months (hell, probably even longer than that. If I looked at Acronia's code, I bet it's const there too), and GCC has never once complained.
This is probably a no-brainer to every programmer who's better than me (i.e. literally everybody), but I'm self-taught with no education and wouldn't know an algorithm from a ham sandwich. I'm lucky my game even works.
...how would you even do it? How *would* arguments be modified at run time by a user? The only thing I can think of is some absurdly intelligent system that will watch for a second instance of the same thing being run and then somehow pass arguments from that new instance onto the old one instead ?
Thought I'd do a separate post about the new add-on I made for customizing my Bookface scheme for Friendica's "Frio" theme. Once a server admin has installed and activated it for users it would appear under Main Menu > Settings > Addons > Bookface Customizations:
The original intention of using CSS variables was to allow easy localization of the pseudo-element text labels to other languages, and let you customize more than just the "accent color" for the theme.
Only the entries you change are included in the override stylesheet added to the site. If you leave an entry blank it will not be included.
There is no validation for what you enter in the text fields to check that it is in correct format or is usable. For colors any valid CSS color declaration should work (color names, hex codes, rgb, rgba, color-mix work but gradients and images do not. You should be able to enter any Unicode text in the label variables, just be careful to escape single quotes/apostrophes with a backslash.
There is nothing to prevent you from making color combinations that will render an unusable interface. There is also nothing to prevent you from making a really, really ugly user interface, but you're the only one who will have to look at it.
This add-on's color options do not work well with "Bookface Auto" since it will automatically pick Light Mode or Dark Mode based on the device settings. It's really hard to find color combos that will work equally well in both modes. But, again, there's nothing to stop you from trying. It doesn't detect which of the Bookface schemes you've enabled.
Lastly, make sure you tick the "Enable Customizations" checkbox at the top to apply your custom settings. That checkbox gives you an easy way to turn them off and on.
Also be aware these settings, being stored on the server in your account preferences, will be applied regardless of what browser or device you use to access your account.

The Zen Postbox add-on has been updated to version 1.3
This fixes an issue where the postbox styling was not shown sitewide or when users were not logged into the server. Now if either of the add-ons is enabled the postboxes should be shown on that server everywhere, even to users who are not logged in.
The add-ons have also been updated to make sure they work with the 2025.7 Release Candidate development version.
Again, the difference between Postbox and Zen Postbox is the first one only includes the stylesheet to show them. You have to manually add the BBcode to your posts. The "Zen" one adds a button to the Compose modal to let you pick from a list and automatically adds the BBcode to your post.
1. make sure when you install the update that the folder name is "zen_postbox" and not "zen_postbox-1.3"
2. check that the permissions for that folder and the sub-folders are correct.
3. Lastly, you will likely have to go into Main Menu > Admin > Addons and disable and re-enable the Zen Postbox addon to get the new "head" hook to register.
4. Open Compose and press the rainbow background button. If you can see the thumbnails for the animated ones you're good. If the last 11 boxes are empty check everything again. If this fix worked you'll see all the thumbnails, and if you add one of the animated ones to your post draft and Preview it you should see the background in the preview.
This does not affect the "Postbox" addon. In Bookface this only affects the animated backgrounds because they are not included in Bookface while the rest of them are.

Yep! My guess is addon stuff gets cached somewhere somehow. Sometimes on my Dev Server the only way to get my edits to addons to work is to disable and re-enable them.
@Alt Pygoscelis Papua @Kevin If you mean editing templates, then your cache at /view/smarty3/compiled/ need to be purged. Just delete all xx directories in it. And please don't forget to run ./bin/composer.phar install on your development system and with --no-dev on your server. Plus you want to truncate the table hooks which contains "cached" addon call-back data: TRUNCATE TABLE `hook`. If your addon has own configuration tables, then you maybe want to delete their entries in config, too.
And which cache driver have you configured? REDIS?
My Dev Server is actually offline running Friendica in XAMPP filled with fake test accounts and dummy content. I hadn't realized all those files in /view/smarty3/compiled/ were cache files, good to know!
@Alt Pygoscelis Papua @Kevin It is a bit strange that the cache isn't automatically cleared when a corresponding template has been changed. Friendica's own Smarty3 class can be found at src/Render/FriendicaSmarty and seem to rely on the default behavior of how Smarty handles updating its cache. I need to investigate this mater further.
@Kevin @Alt Pygoscelis Papua Hmm, Friendica's code handles over single configuration options to it's own FriendicaSmarty::__construct() constructor while it could use there DI::config()->get('foo', 'bar'); directly avoiding longer parameter lists?
This update has a LOT of changes and fixes in it! I think I got in everything everyone who gave me feedback asked for (check the README file "Changelog" section for details). Lots of attention paid to making buttons, tabs, and drop-down appearance consistent, and lots of new CSS variables for customization plus a new option for customizing Bookface (more on that in a moment).
Bookface 1.8 has been tested with both the current stable 2024.12 and 2025.7 Release Candidate versions.
The most obvious change you'll probably notice is that the responses below posts and comments now look completely different:

If multiple people engaged with the post in a certain way you no longer have to click the count to see the list, it's a popover that appears on hover (active on touch devices). This is a lot cleaner and more consistent with how these are displayed on other social media platforms.
You'll also notice that the Main Menu missing icons are in place. This is a change that's coming in the next Friendica release anyway, but Bookface lets you have it right now:

I didn't turn it on by default, but nav button labels are now coded into Bookface and if you're using CSS variable customization they're easy to turn on:

The label text is also customizable. Until now the only way to implement such customizations was either for a server admin to manually put them into the header or footer sitewide or for individual users to put them in a user content stylesheet just for your web browser. That's why I'm also releasing a new Friendica addon called "Bookface Custom" that, if your server admin installs it, allows you to customized every one of the Bookface CSS variables to your heart's content.
Oh, and it's a little thing, but if you did bother to go the trouble of self-verifying your account I restyled the "verified checkmark" in the profile aside 😉:

Yes, I was concerned about that but couldn't come up with a decent solution to prevent it. I thought about using negative margins and padding to swap the positions of the Action Buttons and Responses, but making that work across all screen sizes and for both regular posts and event posts is tricky. The popup list would still be triggered by a mouseover but at least it wouldn't cover the Action Button. I'll keep playing with it and see if I can get it to work consistently. I can always revert it to the way it was in a future release if this turns out to be too much of a usability issue.
Main branch updated to 1.8.1 to fix "Notices" navbar label not using CSS variable. Not an issue for anyone who isn't using Navbar Labels, which are not enabled by default.
If you don't want to wait for the next release the Main branch should always be the most current as people point out things to me and I fix them on GitLab (which should automatically get mirrored to the GitHub repo).

On my desktops, this double navigation takes way more space than in other themes. Would it be possible, for smaller displays, to somehow merge them into one menu line, or does that require more in-depth changes?
I agree that it does take up a lot of space, because I made the icons larger and added more white space for a cleaner, more modern look. Everything in Frio is too tiny and compact and cluttered. It doesn't help that Friendica just has a LOT of controls. Too many IMO. It's kind of overwhelming to new users.
For smaller displays when you get below 768 pixels wide it engages the mobile interface. There's some overlap between desktop and tablet landscape making it impossible to discern which it is, and for most tablets in portrait I chose to display a compact version of the desktop bars to keep the position of controls consistent if you change tablet orientation.
It is technically possible to merge the two bars into one (actually make them 50% screen width and positioned seamlessly side-by-side) for really wide screens, but there's just too much stuff there to do that for a smaller screen. And the sub-section words in the second toolbar can be really short in some languages or really long in others.
You could try zooming in until the mobile interface kicks in. Though it doesn't really save that much space as there are still two toolbars, they just aren't both at the top.
