The FT has published an editorial attacking taxes on the wealthy, and saying we must keep those threatening to leave, come what may. They're horribly wrong. If pandering to tax abuse is the price of keeping the wealthy, we should show them the door. taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2025/0…

Elsewhere, posters depicting the Irish rap group Kneecap, Irish flags, and Palestinian flags appeared on other bonfires on Friday evening.

When people complain that punishing unacceptable behaviour in the workplace will impact on the UK's economic success (growth), they are revealing the dependence of managers in the UK on methods of intimidation, exploitation & prejudice.

As I've said before one of the key issues behind the economic malaise of the UK is its 'tradition' of bad management (managers).

Until we change that culture, the UK will fail to harness the widespread skills & knowledge of its population.

"Alpha males are rare among our fellow primates: scientists [...]
New research [...] contradicted the commonly held idea that males dominate females among primates, revealing far more nuanced power dynamics in the relationships of our close relatives.
[...]
Males clearly dominating females, which was defined as winning more than 90 percent of these confrontations, was only observed in 17 percent of the populations. Among this minority were baboons and chimpanzees, which are the closest living relatives to humans.

Clear female domination was recorded in 13 percent of the primate populations, including lemurs and bonobos."

Michael Shanks has claimed there's no such thing as Scottish electricity because it's generated by "GB wind". An extraordinary statement from a so-called Scottish MP.

In October 2023, Shanks urged people to vote for him saying Rutherglen needed "a local champion who will fight for our area. I want to be that champion."

That aged well.

We expected nothing from him and he's still managed to disappoint us.

The new "Mastodon account verification" scam going around is yet another reason why Mastodon SHOULD NOT HAVE A DM FUNCTION.

AT ALL.

An unsolicited on-platform communication channel that admins have no entitlement to inspect, but some responsibiity for the misleading contents of, is ripe for abuse.

Private communication belongs on private e2ee personal comms channels.

@khm
If people fall for these DM scams, what are the chances of those very same people noticing that the scam email must be a scam/phishing attempt because they never actually entered their email address when they created their Mastodon account several years ago?

The majority of people are not as tech savvy as you might hope, and doesn't even distinguish between the activitypub protocol and implementations of that protocol, let alone different instances/servers of an implementation.

in reply to srslypascal (📞 6063 @ WHY2025)

sorry, having a hard time taking you seriously. is this a real opinion or just sealioning? because this "well that slight improvement might not help this other, even dumber idiot I just invented" stuff combined with your implicit assertion that you know more about "the majority of people" than I do is starting to smell pretty bad-faith over here

if you don't collect email addresses, then you can safely say "any email claiming to come from us is fake"

it removes ambiguity. ambiguity that currently exists because webshits have a habit of outsourcing account management to email. removing email from the platform and loudly announcing it helps people understand.

at best, it's the lesser evil right now. And the more invested anyone gets in it, the more stridently they'll defend it when it makes that next step down the enshittification track. Apple's hiring the same folks that Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Meta, and all the other wannabe mega-evil corps are, so they're all in a race to the bottom. The only way to have a hope of winning... is not to play.

I know you remember when Google said "do no evil" - for a few years, many of us tech folks gave them the benefit of the doubt. How foolish were we? Apple's already done plenty of evil, just not (so far as we know) *that* kind. And, yeah, in general they have a bit more panache. For now. But, as we know, things change. Because that's where all the incentives point. Just like there are no worthy & admirable billionaires, there are no worthy corporations.

I’d rather not have to trust corporations not be evil, and instead know that if they do evil some well-funded government regulatory body will catch them and rain hellfire down on them.

We have allowed corporate lobbyists and propaganda to weaken government regulatory powers and that’s been a big mistake. Without that balance, corporations don’t need to benefit society, just their shareholders.

in reply to Jon Sullivan

@joncounts
That is the nature of this system.

Capitalism incentivizes abuse by valuing profit above all else. Corruption begets corruption. Wealth and power are used to capture regulations and bend them to gain more wealth and power that is used to bend regulations for more money and power round and round we go and the final, inevitable form of this type of system is corporate feudalism. That's how it works by its inherent nature.

For fantasy is true, of course. It isn’t factual, but it’s true. Children know that. Adults know it too and that’s precisely why many of them are afraid of fantasy. They know that its truth challenges, even threatens, all that is false, all that is phony, unnecessary, and trivial in the life they have let themselves be forced into living. They are afraid of dragons because they are afraid of freedom.
