(1/2) Genuinely the most thought-provoking thing I've read from @pluralistic who regularly blows my mind, so this is saying a lot.

I naively thought of FOSS as building a "commons." A functional alternative to property-expansionism. Not that I knew there weren't exceptions, but I never fully appreciated the existing tensions because...well FOSS seems like a commons.

But how and why you build something is as important as what you build. That's what determines function.

I've had one as my main bike for over a year. I'm not sure what your needs are but here are my thoughts:
* It's generally well suited for everyday city life. I rode mine through the winter and never washed it. The belt doesnt care.
* The gear range is great unless you have steep hills.
* Weirdly, the fork doesn't have the mounting hole at the bottom for a fender, but it does have one at the top. I use their recommended fenders with the Velcro straps and they've been great.
* Be sure to practice taking the wheels off. The gear cable attaches at the back in a weird way and you have to disconnect that to take the wheel off. Make sure you know how to do it.
* The hub really doesn't want you to peddle while you shift. If you do, it will feel like you shifted just fine and then a few seconds later your drivetrain will jolt as it actually gets into where it's supposed it.
* They say you can't use a front rack but it has all the mounting points for one. I suspect this is because tightening a bolt too hard on the carbon fork crown could cause safety issues. I have a rack there anyway and it's been fine.
* The hub has a sprag clutch which means it doesn't click. It's truly silent while pedaling and coasting.
* The rear sprocket is a Gates Surefit. This requires a special tool to take on and off. I had to buy one off Italian eBay. Your bike shop almost certainly won't have one.
* The bike is pretty heavy. Not that big a deal for most things but it is what it is.
* I've changed the oil once but otherwise never messed with the drivetrain. It's very low maintenance

The Freedom Flotilla Coalition confirms that upon arrival in Israeli custody, U.S. human rights defender Christian Smalls was physically assaulted by seven uniformed individuals. They choked him and kicked him in the legs, leaving visible signs of violence on his neck and back.

When his lawyer met with him, Christian was surrounded by six members of Israel’s special police unit. This level of force was not used against other abducted activists.

The Freedom Flotilla Coalition condemns this violence against Chris and demands accountability for the assault and discriminatory treatment he faced.

@RBG @disisdeguey While I of course don't disagree with what either of you noted and appreciate your intent, I would encourage avoiding phrasing such situations as "old news" or similar, because it probably in my opinion increases normalization for it, even though I understand that was not at all intended.
It is just a subconscious thing, I believe, that when people see "old" it automatically interprets it as at least partially "normal", while this can of course never be accepted as normal, by or unto anyone.

x264 AV1 file, vlc and mpv on debian 12.11, problems to play it, what to do?

the x264 av1 file plays only audio on vlc but works with flaws on mpv: on mpv I get audio and video, but every 5 to 6 seconds it's like instead of getting 24 fps I get 22, the user noticing the missing frames.

Is this a hardware issue? software?

Check using e.g. top for your CPU (nvidia-smi or amd-smi for your GPU) or System Monitor on KDE if any of your resource is being maxed out. If so then most likely you found the culprit.

Regarding what the actual codec is being used you can use ffprobe but anyway what matters if resource bottleneck and thus if you can have hardware acceleration for it.

It's probably worth investigating so that you don't keep on getting video files too big for your computer to handle. I imagine it's something very high resolution with very recent compression. If so, look for something less demanding, e.g. x265 720p and if that's still leading to performance hiccups the older x264 720p or even 480p.

It's rate that the media player itself, e.g. VLC or mpv, actually is the bottleneck.

What's the deal with converting all the efficient pairs of one-way streets into two-way?!

In my town, all the 4+ lane one-ways are being converted to single-lane two-ways + bus-only lanes and bike lanes. I cycle a shiitload downtown, and this is fucking retarded. I'm less safe on my bike, and god forbid a car needs to turn: that one auto lane is now backed up.

I've assumed that this is all dipshit bureaucratic social engineering. They are ashamed of cars. Am I wrong?

This came at a cost, we had a batch of upgrades all related to a major perl upgrade, I was supposed to wait for perl to leave testing and go to stable before I synced, I copied the file into the sync directory to upload the bg didn't think that ALL the pkgs being upgraded were removed from the directory, so 1 bg up 15 files deleted 🙁

So I just went ahead and did the full upgrade, we are now all caught up with testing 😀

Ohh... well ... at least we are not behind, we are ahead. Let's hope nothing breaks. If it does activate extra-testing and will all be OK again

NASA research has shown that cell-like compartments called vesicles could form naturally in the lakes of Saturn’s moon Titan.

Titan is the only world apart from Earth that is known to have liquid on its surface. However, Titan’s lakes and seas are not filled with water. Instead, they contain liquid hydrocarbons like ethane and methane.

On Earth, liquid water is thought to have been essential for the origin of life as we know it. Many astrobiologists have wondered whether Titan’s liquids could also provide an environment for the formation of the molecules required for life – either as we know it or perhaps as we don’t know it – to take hold there.

New NASA research, published in the International Journal of Astrobiology, outlines a process by which stable vesicles might form on Titan, based on our current knowledge of the moon’s atmosphere and chemistry. The formation of such compartments is an important step in making the precursors of living cells (or protocells).

The process involves molecules called amphiphiles, which can self-organize into vesicles under the right conditions. On Earth, these polar molecules have two parts, a hydrophobic (water-fearing) end and a hydrophilic (water-loving) end. When they are in water, groups of these molecules can bunch together and form ball-like spheres, like soap bubbles, where the hydrophilic part of the molecule faces outward to interact with the water, thereby ‘protecting’ the hydrophobic part on the inside of the sphere. Under the right conditions, two layers can form creating a cell-like ball with a bilayer membrane that encapsulates a pocket of water on the inside.

When considering vesicle formation on Titan, however, the researchers had to take into account an environment vastly different from the early Earth.

Uncovering Conditions on Titan

Titan is Saturn’s largest moon and the second largest in our solar system. Titan is also the only moon in our solar system with a substantial atmosphere.

The hazy, golden atmosphere of Titan kept the moon shrouded in mystery for much of human history. However, when NASA’s Cassini spacecraft arrived at Saturn in 2004, our views of Titan changed forever.

Thanks to Cassini, we now know Titan has a complex meteorological cycle that actively influences the surface today. Most of Titan’s atmosphere is nitrogen, but there is also a significant amount of methane (CH4). This methane forms clouds and rain, which falls to the surface to cause erosion and river channels, filling up the lakes and seas. This liquid then evaporates in sunlight to form clouds once again.

This atmospheric activity also allows for complex chemistry to happen. Energy from the Sun breaks apart molecules like methane, and the pieces then reform into complex organic molecules. Many astrobiologists believe that this chemistry could teach us how the molecules necessary for the origin of life formed and evolved on the early Earth.

Building Vesicles on Titan


The new study considered how vesicles might form in the freezing conditions of Titan’s hydrocarbon lakes and seas by focusing on sea-spray droplets, thrown upwards by splashing raindrops. On Titan, both spray droplets and the sea surface could be coated in layers of amphiphiles. If a droplet then lands on the surface of a pond, the two layers of amphiphiles meet to form a double-layered (or bilayer) vesicle, enclosing the original droplet. Over time, many of these vesicles would be dispersed throughout the pond and would interact and compete in an evolutionary process that could lead to primitive protocells.

If the proposed pathway is happening, it would increase our understanding of the conditions in which life might be able to form.

“The existence of any vesicles on Titan would demonstrate an increase in order and complexity, which are conditions necessary for the origin of life,” explains Conor Nixon of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. “We’re excited about these new ideas because they can open up new directions in Titan research and may change how we search for life on Titan in the future.”

NASA’s first mission to Titan is the upcoming Dragonfly rotorcraft, which will explore the surface of the Saturnian moon. While Titan’s lakes and seas are not a destination for Dragonfly (and the mission won’t carry the light-scattering instrument required to detect such vesicles), the mission will fly from location to location to study the moon’s surface composition, make atmospheric and geophysical measurements, and characterize the habitability of Titan’s environment.

Εγώ δεν έπιασα ούτε καν την κριτική ματιά του ίδιου του ντοκιμαντέρ. Με κάποιον τρόπο έχω βρεθεί σε αρκετά από τα τοπία που δείχνει. Στο παρελθόν, αλλά και τώρα. Η διαφορά στη βιοποικιλότητα είναι χαοτική.
Εγώ δεν σχολιάζω τα έργα σαν έργα (σήμερα με αυτό το χάλι με ανεμογεννήτριες και αιολικά δεν το συζητάω - το έχουν κάψει εντελώς όλες οι κυβερνήσεις από το 07 και μετά), αλλά μετά την εντατική "αλλαγή" εδαφών, αέρα, νερού, κατέστησαν την προσαρμογή των ειδών ανήμπορη. Δεν μπορεί να επιβιώσει τίποτα με τόσο απότομες αλλαγές που έχει επιφέρει ο ανθρώπινος παράγοντας.
Ακόμα μεγαλύτερη ζημιά κι απ' τις ανεμογεννήτριες κάνουν οι ψεκασμοί για έντομα. Έχει διαταραχτεί τόσο ο φυσικός κύκλος τροφής και αναπαραγωγής που ελάχιστα πτηνά πλέον ζουν ή βρίσκουν καταφύγιο σε μέρη που παραδοσιακά - για χιλιάδες χρόνια - τα συναντούσες. Κι ο κύκλος συνεχίζει.
Είναι πολύ βαθύ και πολύ καταθλιπτικό αυτό που γίνεται ενάντια στη φύση - ειδικά στα Βαλκάνια.

ναι θα έλεγα ότι δεν είναι απλώς ότι αλλάζει το τοπίο. Φταίει η λογική της σύγχρονης αγροτικής βιομηχανίας. Αυτό που συμβαίνει με τις εντατικές μονοκαλλιέργειες καταστρέφει τη ποιότητα του εδάφους κάνοντάς το όλο και πιο φτωχό σε συστατικά που τελικά οδηγεί σε ερημοποίηση, εκτοπίζει πληθυσμούς άγριων ζώων και κλέβει όλο το νερό από τα οικοσυστήματα. Όταν φυτεύεις μόνο ένα πράγμα σε τεράστιες εκτάσεις είναι ευάλωτο στα πάντα, οπότε αναγκάζεσαι να το ποτίζεις φυτοφάρμακα και αυτό καταστρέφει τους πληθυσμούς επικονιαστών και εντόμων, απαραίτητων για τις τροφικές αλυσίδες οικοσυστημάτων και φυσικά για την βιοποικιλότητα. Επίσης, τα φυτοφάρμακα φέρνουν στα οικοσυστήματα υπερβολικό φώσφορο και άζωτο που καταστρέφουν την βιοποικιλότητα, τους φυσικούς κύκλους ζωής φυτών και τροφής και τα οικοσυστήματα των ποταμιών γενικότερα. Και τέλος, όλο αυτό αποδυναμώνει τα φυσικά οικοσυστήματα, τα κάνει πιο ευάλωτα σε εξωτερικές συνθήκες, πιο ευάλωτα σε φωτιές, σε ιούς, σε δυνατότητα να διατηρήσουν διοξείδιο του άνθρακα κλπ.

Με λίγα λόγια, κλέβουμε τα εδάφη και τον φυσικό πλούτο της φύσης από τη φύση και τη μετατρέπουμε σε κουφάρι.

During the night of 12 to 13 June, a car belonging to the Stölting company went up in flames.

The Stölting group is a services company and presents itself, among other things, as an external alternative for management, food, medical treatment, care and support for jails; it is proposing taking over certain areas, or even the management of prison establishments as a whole.

In the past, the Stölting group has also been associated with anti-union practices – workers found themselves offered money to leave the union.

With all the different roles they play in prison, they are supporting a system based on the punishment of persons who do not integrate into the logic of capitalist exploitation, and try to break them through isolation.

Prisons are one of the many repressive tools of the State to prevent actions of resistance and intimidate people who use counter-violence against them.

At the present time, in Germany, there are more compas in jail than there have been over the past thirty years. The State is acting very firmly against all those who are putting its monopoly of violence in question.

The antifascist movement is presently at the centre of investigations, but anarchists M. and N., of Munich, as well as Daniela Klette [one-time militant of the RAF, arrested in February 2024 and presently on trial; NdAtt.] are also imprisoned on remand.

In Greece, anarchists Marianna, Dimitra, Dimitris and Nikos are on remand following the explosion that took place on October 31 2024 in an apartment in Athens, and cost anarchist combatant Kyriakos Xymitiris his life.

They are being accused of being members of a terrorist organisation, as is often the case, the simple fact of knowing each other is punished, aimed at satisfying the appetites of the authorities in charge of the inquest, always seeking more suspects.

In Hungary, Maja has started a hunger strike on June 5th 2025 [see here; NdAtt.], protest against solitary confinement and the prison conditions and to be assigned to house arrest or be sent back to Germany.

For prisoners hunger strike is often the last means they have to resist. They put their health and also their life at risk and use their body as a last weapon against the repressive system.

All those in prison who resist and fight back deserve our solidarity – beating up nazis, blowing up prisons, burning cops cars are all parts of a practice of resistance which can only continue to live thanks to support in the street and the defence of our ideas with all means.
