Unknown parent • • •Stickers, in the 90s? Are you sure? I believe we've been calling them smileys. I don't have any BBS software sources at hand, but PHPbb and SMF were among the most popular forum engines in the early 2000s, both call them smileys, e.g. here:

Sticker is a relatively "young" term IMO, I think I encountered it for the first time when dealing with Telegram or something like that.

But I see, @mirabilos@toot.mirbsd.org means real-life objects that inspired them — makes sense, but for me it wasn't like that. This could also be country and language specific.
In any case — yes, for the sake of correctness, emojis are original Japanese characters, but I personally don't mind the term being used more broadly 😁
