Why Theresa May was right to ignore David Aaronovitch over child sex abuse in North Wales

Times columnist David Aaronovitch. Pic credit :Flickr
Times columnist David Aaronovitch. Pic credit :Flickr

Two years ago when Theresa May announced she was re-opening the police investigation into the North Wales child abuse scandal Times columnist David Aaronovitch penned a highly controversial column warning that the nation was in danger of mounting a modern witch hunt over alleged paedophilia. Indeed his post was entitled Beware a modern Salem over child abuse.

He pointed out that both the original John Jillings report and the ” exhaustive inquiry ” by retired judge Sir Ronald Waterhouse Lost in Care had found no evidence of a paedophile ring and therefore there was no need for any fresh inquiries.

I remember disagreeing with him on the BBC Radio Four’s Today programme over his findings after reading the report. He was right about Waterhouse’s findings but failed to notice that the findings somewhat jarred with the detailed evidence contained in the same report.

He also firmly disagreed with the line taken by one survivor’s solicitor, Steve Messham, that Waterhouse had too limited a remit to inquire properly into the idea of an abuse network.

Fast forward to this week and Operation Pallial, the National Crime Agency run investigation set up by Theresa May, has achieved its first scalp,John Allen. He was sent to prison for life and given he is 73 will probably die there.

Nor was this minor stuff – he was convicted of 33 extra charges – that somehow had been missed in an earlier police investigation. The full background is outlined here in the Liverpool Daily Post. And he is not the only one to face new allegations which will be heard in future trials. To be accurate the latest Pallial statistics say 13 more people are facing trial, there are over 100 new suspects and over 200 survivors coming forward.

Now if David Aaronovitch had won the argument Mr Allen would be a free man and would have got away with all this and died peacefully at home. A lot of survivors claims would never have been proven and left to fester on no doubt ” lurid and preposterous” ( as Aaronvitch would have it) sites on the internet.

Of course Mr Allen, who had already been found guilty of previous offences, claimed in his defence he wasn’t gay, was not sexually attracted to children and had suffered a “miscarriage of justice ” when he was convicted in the first place. His accusers were making it up to get compensation money, his defence lawyers said. The jury did not buy this.

I raise this because some of the commentariat and the Establishment believe the latest allegations of a Westminster paedophile ring and alleged murders of some of the victims is another fantasy and leading to a new witch hunt. While the investigation is in no way as advanced as Pallial – Pallial shows it needs following through.

Theresa May in setting up Pallial and an overarching child sex abuse inquiry obviously does believe that further investigations are needed to find out what really happened decades ago. She is in on record that this could be ” the tip of an iceberg”. David Cameron believes this is ” stuff of conspiracy theories ” and David Aaronovitch reflects this view in his own column and tweets.

I am backing Theresa May on this one.

"nuclear is safe"

stltoday.com/news/local/govern…

in reply to 𝕕𝕚𝕒𝕟𝕒 🏳️‍⚧️🦋

Still, after all these years, some people don't understand some of these words they throw around.

radioactive material: material that emits radiation
radiation: in this context, alpha, beta, or gamma radiation.

Alpha radiation consists of alpha particles. Alpha particles are identical to ordinary helium nuclei. They consist of two neutrons and two protons. They can cause damage because they are (positively) charged particles. They cause chemical reactions to occur that can damage living cells.

We are normally protected from alpha radiation by the outermost layer of our skin, the epidermis. However, if alpha-emitting material gets into the body--particularly, into the lungs--it will do damage, and continue to do damage, pretty much forever. This is quite likely, eventually, to lead to cancer.

Beta radiation consists of beta particles. These are actually electrons. Like alpha particles, they are charged particles and can damage living cells. They can normally be stopped by a sheet of paper. However beta-emitting material, like alpha-emitting material, can cause continuing damage if it gets inside the body.

Together, alpha and beta radiation are known as "ionizing radiation."

Gamma radiation is very high frequency (and, therefore, very high energy) electromagnetic (EM) radiation. Visible light is EM radiation. Radios, cell phones, microwave ovens, WiFi, and TVs also use EM radiation of different frequencies.

Gamma radiation is whole-body-penetrating radiation, and, because it can interact with the electron shells of atoms, it is also ionizing radiation. In fact, it's that interaction with electrons that radiation detectors exploit in order to detect gamma radiation.

Just being near a source of gamma radiation is enough to be harmed by it--even if the radioactive material emitting it never touches you.

In our submarine, back in the US Navy, there was a spot in the reactor tunnel (used to get past the reactor compartment when the reactor was operating) where a bit of crud from the reactor's main coolant had become lodged in a sample pipe. "Crud" (no kidding) was a technical term defined as "corrosion and wear products in the primary system." That crud contained some cobalt-60. This created a small area, where radiation exposure was higher, that we kept roped off.

The Navy's philosophy was that less radiation exposure is always better. Our limits were set as low as they could be while still being able to operate.

Any contamination with radioactive material at all outside the reactor itself, on a surface, in water, or in the air was considered unacceptable. If it occurred it had to be eliminated immediately. That little pipe was a problem. That place in the pipe was always going to be a low-flow area, and sooner or later some bit of crud was going to settle there. So we kept it roped off with purple and yellow rope with this sign attached.

Actually, there was no way to get past the RC other than the tunnel. The bulkheads around the RC were shielded with borated polyethylene (to absorb neutrons), and no one stayed in the tunnel or near the fore and aft bulkheads of the RC longer than necessary. It's all about minimizing exposure.

Keep display output when monitor "Disconnected"

I am using a laptop, with a cheaper monitor that only has one hdmi input. I have two devices that I want to use on this monitor, My laptop and my xbox series, so I got an hdmi switcher.

The xbox handles switching to and from it's input without a hitch, but my laptop can takes up to a minute to recognize the switch and display to the monitor, sometimes not recognizing it at all.

I was thinking that having the laptop continue to output the display whether or not it recognizes the monitor as disconnected would help make switching between them more seamless. Is there a way to achieve this?

I am using KDE and I have the "Do Nothing" option selected under close lid in power options.

in reply to TheMonkeyLord

I think what you want is an EDID emulator with passthrough or whatever it's called. EDID is how a monitor tells a device what resolution to send and other info. Some cheap HDMI splitters, adapters, audio extractors, etc will let you emulate a specific EDID. One of my audio extractors lets you fake stereo vs surround support to trick the source into sending surround - I think that's also through EDID - since if you're trying to extract surround, it might be because your real TVs EDID is for stereo I assume. So you probably want something like that in before the switch so that the laptop always thinks something is plugged in. Your switch seems to be too smart in actually passing through the real monitor's EDID so the laptop is able to see when it switches.

PS: Lots to hate here. But suppose the model spreads to other industries. (Yes, this is sci-fi for now. But let your imagination run free.) Imagine that academic #publishers used this model to set #APCs. What would AI tools infer from your institutional affiliation (about available resources), first name (about gender), surname (about ethnicity), submitted manuscript (about guesstimated quality), and past publications (about specialization, reputation, impact)? What odd variables would it factor in, such as the number of Trump-banned words (for political protection) or the number of citations to that journal (for #JIF)? How would it use all this information? Would it lower the #APC for you, to bring you in, or raise it, to price you out?

For airlines or journals, would there be any reason to stick with the model if it didn't raise net revenues?

Former Swansea City star Andy Robinson recovering after heart attack

The 45-year-old, who remains a beloved figure among Swans fans, was taken ill on Thursday and is currently in a stable condition, according to statements from both Swansea City and Tranmere Rovers.

“Swansea City is wishing the club’s former player Andy Robinson a full and speedy recovery after suffering a heart attack earlier today,” the club posted on social media. “Andy is currently in a stable condition in hospital. We’re all with you, Robbo.”

Robinson, born in Birkenhead, began his footballing journey in non-league with Cammell Laird before being picked up by Tranmere Rovers in 2002. Though he didn’t make a senior appearance for the Wirral club at that time, it was Swansea City who gave him his professional breakthrough in 2003. Over the next five years, Robinson became a key figure in the Swans’ rise through the Football League.

He made 226 appearances for Swansea, scoring 54 goals. Among his most memorable contributions was scoring the final goal at the club’s historic Vetch Field in the 2005 FAW Premier Cup final against Wrexham. He also played a pivotal role in the club’s promotion from League Two in 2005 and was part of the squad that lifted the Football League Trophy in 2006. Under Roberto Martínez, Robinson helped Swansea win the League One title in 2007–08, cementing his legacy as one of the club’s modern icons.

Following his success in South Wales, Robinson moved to Leeds United in 2008, where he made 50 appearances and scored seven goals. He later returned to Tranmere Rovers, initially on loan and then permanently, making over 100 appearances and scoring 19 goals. His career also included spells at Shrewsbury Town, Stockport County, and Welsh side Ammanford. In recent years, he continued to play at a grassroots level for Rock Ferry Social.

Tributes and well-wishes have poured in from across the footballing world. Leeds United posted on social media: “Now in a stable condition, everyone at Leeds United Football Club wishes former player Andy Robinson a speedy recovery.”

Robinson’s health scare has prompted reflection on the hidden risks athletes may face after retirement. Despite his years of elite-level fitness, his heart attack serves as a stark reminder that health issues can affect anyone, regardless of their sporting background.

Fans from Swansea, Leeds, Tranmere, and beyond have taken to social media to express their support, sharing memories of Robinson’s on-field heroics and sending messages of encouragement.

As he continues his recovery, Robinson remains in the thoughts of the football community. His story is a powerful reminder of the enduring bonds between players and the clubs they serve—and the importance of health and well-being beyond the pitch.

For now, supporters everywhere are united in one message: Get well soon, Robbo.

Sheehan set to stay as Swansea City boss until end of season

Having stepped up lead the side following Luke Williams’ departure last month, the Swans have taken seven points from a possible 15, including statement victories over Blackburn Rovers and Middlesbrough.

Recent defeats however, against Watford and Burnley have pulled the Swans back to just six points above the relegation zone leading to the clubs hierarchy to act on the continued managerial uncertainty.

Sheehan will be joined by two new additions to his coaching team in Mark Fotheringham and Richard Stearman who are understood to have been brought in to work alongside Kris O’Leary and Martyn Margetson on the first team coaching staff.

Under-21 head coach Anthony Wright will return to focusing on his role with the club’s development side.

41-year-old Fotheringham’s coaching exploits have seen the Scotsman coach in Germany working as an assistant at Karlsruher SC and Ingolstadt, and later held the same position under former Fulham boss Felix Magath at Hertha Berlin.

Fotheringham later become number one at Huddersfield Town at Championship level, and has most recently worked under Jurgen Klinsmann with the South Korea national team.

Stearman, 37, an experienced Championship campaigner as a player, amassed just shy of 500 league appearances.

Having recently transitioned into coaching, he joins from Solihull Moors where he was assistant manager.

Director of Football, Richard Montague, said:

“We’re delighted Alan has agreed to lead the team for the rest of the season, and would like to extend a big welcome to Mark and Richard as they join our coaching staff in support of Alan.

“Both will aid us in our efforts to finish the season as strongly as possible, which is the full focus of everyone at the club at this moment.”

Swansea City return to Championship action following the international break with a trip to Elland Road to take on Leeds United this weekend, before back-to-back home games against Derby County and Plymouth Argyle at the Swansea.com Stadium.

Swansea City Football Club to launch ‘Swansea Jack’ city centre sports bar

The partnership between the Swans and Football Taverns Ltd will see ‘The Swansea Jack’ open ahead of the start of
the 2025-26 campaign, with the new bar to be located at Salubrious Place, Little Wind Street, opposite the Swansea Museum and Morgan’s Hotel.

The bar’s name is a direct nod to the pub of the same name which was located near the club’s former home at the Vetch Field, and was a popular matchday haunt for many Swansea City fans.

The Swans say the new dedicated space for supporters will offer a unique experience blending live sport, great food and drink, and the unmistakable history, heritage and spirit of Swansea City and the Jack Army.

The club also plans to hold regular exciting additional events for fans to attend at ‘The Swansea Jack’, including chances to meet current and former Swans’ heroes, while live sport and Swansea City content will be shown on the big screens every day.

Snoop Dogg sparks buzz with Swansea City kit reveal

The club unveiled a preview of the new home shirt on Saturday night with a photo of the rapper proudly modelling the kit, in what appears to be a playful dig at Wrexham AFC’s own launch.

Co-owner Ryan Reynolds had earlier posted a snap of himself in Wrexham’s new strip, captioned: “Dog not included.” Swansea’s cheeky reply? “Dogg included @SnoopDogg. Nuthin’ But A Wales Thang, the Jacks are ready. We’re the Pride of Wales.”

Hereeeeee we go 👊🏿👀 @SwansOfficial t.co/345qsqSww8

— Snoop Dogg (@SnoopDogg) July 12, 2025

In a follow-up video, Snoop gave the Swans his seal of approval: “Hail to Wales and to Swansea City. It’s your boy big Snoop Dogg… Coming to a hood near you. Oh yeah, these are the new jerseys.”

The move has ignited speculation online, with some wondering whether the Gin and Juice hitmaker might be eyeing a deeper connection with the club. While there’s no confirmation of any investment, Snoop’s long-standing love of football is well documented—he’s previously been spotted in kits from Burnley, Norwich, QPR, Liverpool, Manchester United, and even Cardiff.

The shirt itself is a subtle evolution of last season’s design, featuring a retro-style circular badge and a black-and-white tiled trim on the sleeves and collar. A release date hasn’t yet been confirmed, but with Swansea’s pre-season opener against Stevenage in Spain fast approaching, fans won’t have to wait long to see it in action.

Fan Reaction: Snoop Steals the Show

Swans fans had plenty to say—ranging from laughter to love for the unexpected twist:

  • “Snoop Dogg in a Swans shirt? Never thought I’d see the day. Absolute scenes 🔥”
  • “This is unreal. Snoop repping the Jacks—what a time to be alive.”
  • “Swansea City just won the internet. Snoop Dogg in the new kit is iconic.”
  • “Forget the kit, I’m buying it just because Snoop wore it. Marketing masterclass.”
  • “Snoop Dogg saying ‘Hail to Wales’—I’m framing that video.”

Others reacted to the kit itself with some classic Welsh humour:

  • “Nagged for the last 3 weeks if it’s coming out by my boy… shown him this picture and he’s not impressed with the shirt. Now pinning his hopes on the away shirt.”
  • “The kit is boiling p**s amongst Jacks on the Twitter post.”
  • “Where’s our kit, we want the new kit! Kit is released. No! We don’t want that kit!”
  • “I thought it was Bill Cosby.”
  • “Looks useful for directing traffic.”

Regardless of design debates, one thing is certain—Swansea City’s latest launch has sparked plenty of buzz.

Snoop Dogg joins Swansea City as co-owner

Swansea City has confirmed that Snoop Dogg—one of the world’s most recognisable music artists—has officially joined the club’s ownership group as a co-owner and investor.

The announcement follows a wave of speculation after the rapper helped unveil the club’s 2025-26 home kit last weekend, sparking a social media frenzy and playful comparisons with Wrexham’s Hollywood co-owner Ryan Reynolds. The full story of that reveal is available in our earlier coverage: Snoop Dogg sparks buzz with Swansea City kit reveal.

Now, the club has confirmed that Snoop’s involvement goes far beyond the shirt.

“My love of football is well known, but it feels special to me that I make my move into club ownership with Swansea City,” said Snoop Dogg. “The story of the club and the area really struck a chord with me. This is a proud, working-class city and club. An underdog that bites back, just like me.”

A global name with local ambition

Snoop Dogg—real name Calvin Broadus—has sold more than 35 million albums worldwide and earned 17 Grammy nominations. He’s also a lifelong sports fan, having served as a FIFA video game ambassador and frequently appeared in football shirts from clubs around the world.

His decision to invest in Swansea City comes just months after Croatian football legend Luka Modrić joined the club’s ownership group. Together, the high-profile additions are expected to help boost the club’s commercial reach, global visibility, and on-field ambitions.

“We’re delighted that putting on a Swansea shirt has proven to be the right fit,” said the club’s ownership group. “Snoop’s colossal global fanbase will help us raise the club’s profile and create new opportunities.”

Mural unveiled at Swansea.com Stadium

To mark the occasion, a mural of Snoop Dogg—created by artist Hasan Kamil—has been unveiled in the West Stand of the Swansea.com Stadium. The artwork celebrates the rapper’s new role and his connection to the club’s identity.

Chief Executive Tom Gorringe added:

“It is very exciting for us to formally welcome Snoop Dogg as a co-owner and investor. He’s passionate about this project and helping us raise the profile of the club to as wide an audience as possible.”

Snoop himself closed his statement with a nod to the Jack Army:

“I’m proud to be part of Swansea City. I’m going to do all I can to help the club, and I look forward to getting to know all my YJBS.”
