Pro Palestine Activists Scale the Roof of Canberra Weapons Manufacturer Electro Optics Systems (EOS)
In the early hours of this morning, eight anti genocide and pro-Palestine activists scaled the roof of Electro Optic Systems (EOS) weapons factory in Canberra (90 Sheppard St, Hume), ACT. Dressed in red jumpsuits emblazoned with ‘We are all Palestine action’, the activists unfurled a 30 metre banner from the roof reading ‘Stop Arming Israel’. Another banner reading ‘War Profiteers making a killing with your tax dollars’ was unfurled from the roof. Four more activists have blockaded the entrance gates on the ground. They have locked onto the gates while a minivan blocks the loading bay entrance.
The activists wore the red jumpsuits as a sign of global solidarity with Palestine Action, and with all ordinary people around the world facing ever-increasing authoritarian repression for protesting our governments’ complicity in genocide.
The pro-Palestine activists demand that EOS and the so-called Australian Government stop arming Israel. They further demand that the Government stop aiding and abetting Israel’s attempted genocide of the Palestinian people.
Surya McEwen is a high-demand support worker and carer, living on Widjabul Wia-bal country (who previously sailed on the Freedom Flotilla to Gaza that was bombed by the Israeli regime), stated: “The genocide against the Palestinians is a crime of historic proportions that stains the collective conscience of humanity. For those of us who are citizens of governments who provide economic, military and diplomatic support for Israeli state terror, there is no greater moral duty than to work collectively in all the ways available to us to end this complicity, end the genocide, dismantle apartheid, and make peace, equality and justice possible for everyone in historic Palestine”.
Electro Optic Systems operates under the motto "First time, every time" and specialises in developing and manufacturing what they describe as "highly accurate and reliable weapon systems." As revealed recently by Declassified Australia, EOS manufactures a weapon, known as the R400 Remote Weapon System (RWS), in Canberra. R400 weapons components are then shipped to EOS facilities in the United States for assembly, after which they are exported to Israel.
Margaret, aged 84 years, a retired School Principal who is currently locked on to the gates of EOS stated: “I was a small child when the Holocaust was happening. All my life, I have asked the question: how could people have let this happen? Now we are watching another genocide happening, right in front of our eyes, night after night on our TV screens.
“I am protesting today because there is incontrovertible evidence that Australia is, via other countries, sending military equipment for F35 fighter planes for use by Israel. Parts for the planes and drones that are steadily killing innocent Gazans are manufactured right here under our noses, despite what the PM earnestly declares! EOS supplies the deadly R400 weapon used by Israel to murder Palestinian people. I cannot stay silent while this is happening. The genocide will only stop when the flow of weapons into Israel is stopped. Sanction Israel – now!”.
While the so-called Australian Government is supplying weapons to Israel to bomb over two million starving Palestinians, they and other governments around the world continue to criminalise anti-genocide and Palestinian protestors and supporters, with the UK Government going so far as to recently proscribing Palestine Action as a terrorist organisation.
Another activist who scaled the roof, Juliet Lamont, stated: "We are here today standing on the roof of EOS, a company that manufactures and supplies the R400 weapons system that Israel uses to annihilate deliberately starved people. If politicians want to talk about who the terrorists are and what is radical, then they should take a look at themselves. They are radical, they are the ones committing crimes.”
She went on to say: “It is not radical to be a human being standing on this roof to name and shame this company who profits from death. We are here to demand that our government own up to their complicity, stop arming Israel and end the genocide. We are here to stand in solidarity with the people of Palestine and with the now proscribed UK organisation Palestine Action. That is not a radical act at all. Thousands of innocent Palestinians are being killed. Our government is supplying weapon systems to support these war crimes and genocide. Direct action by concerned people is not terrorism, it is an act of love."
Another activist who is locked-on to a gate on the ground is Oats, 39. a mother, living on stolen Djab Wurrung Country, stated: "As a Muslim, I am obligated to do what I can to fight against the genocide in Palestine. EOS is complicit in the slaughter of Palestinians. If our government won't do anything to stop the arms supply to Israel, then I have no choice but to stand on this roof and attempt to stop it with my comrades."
Gaye Demanuele, locked onto the minivan blockading one of the factory gates, said: “We cannot unsee the genocide or our government’s complicity in it. Our government has taken no action to cut off the flow of weapons to Israel. Our politicians have lied to the public. They continue to supply and enable Israel to commit genocidal crimes via the global arms trade.”
The chant “we are all Palestinians” rings true around the world. When our governments refuse to act to prevent crimes against humanity, it is our moral duty to take action to disrupt the systems that enable war crimes. It has now moved beyond an emergency in Palestine. We are witnessing barbarity. As people of good conscience, we must do everything in our power to stop the genocide. We will continue to protest weapons manufacturers everywhere until our governments ban weapons exports to Israel and all imperialist complicity in genocide.
From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free!
