It reminds me of an old horror movie called Boxing Helena with Julian Sands, it's pretty cool specially if you're into the horror/robotic female aesthetic.

On the practical side, the dolls not having limbs is pretty genius as they are much lighter, easier to handle and they are more resistant as the legs and arms break the easiest. It's also cheaper and easier to put away.

Read the whole statement.

Absolutely nothing is required of Israel, multiple strict requirements on the Palestinians...yet Israel gets lasting peace, and Palestine just needs to be "stable and viable" *for Israel*.

I want lasting peace for Israel, but not on the graves of as many Palestinians as they deem necessary, like it always has been.

Israeli lives and prosperity are no more and no less important than anyone else's.

F**k you, Carney.

Today I discovered Playwright, a modern end-to-end testing library that can drive whatever browsers you’d like. Combined with my Amplify app it makes a great solution for doing full testing of your application in a safe and repeatable way. Tests are easy to write and easy to run, and you can get screenshots of every step along the way.

I know that the governments pushing these age verification laws are just using the well-being of children as a smokescreen, but for anyone who does think that the need to government to protect their children from porn, let me have a word with you:

Yes, it's your responsibility what your children do on the Internet. I don't buy this counterargument that your children will always be more tech savvy than you. Just look at Gen Alpha and how most of them can't even navigate a file system. Do you really think they can bypass firewalls if they can't understand how directories work?

You may think that children will find a way, but there are plenty of tutorials online on how to keep up with the latest security trends. Also, your kids won't be able to hack whatever security you have if you block the sites that give tutorials on bypassing such security measures.

If you are truly paranoid about what your kids do on the Internet or on the computer in general, either don't let them use a computer or electronic devices at all or set up their devices for them. There are custom USB-bootable Linux distros out there with parental controls in mind. You can even buy them from some websites so you don't need to know how to make bootable drives yourself. They only allow kids to use whitelisted sites and programs. Don't give your kids accounts on your computers and then they will have no choice but to use those flash drives. Whitelisting (i.e blacklisting everything except for a few approved sites) is the only guaranteed way to keep your kids safe online (outside prohibiting them from using the Internet at all, of course).

They'll try to implement it and it will go sideways, careers will be ruined, the entire topic will become radioactive, they'll back-peddle and lick their wounds.

Airport security "works" because you're already going through the airport, you're already doing SOME security, now a dude is gonna touch your balls.

This is more like trying to get the US to switch to the Metric system, it seems easy enough on it's face, but when you try there are a billion problems that all emerge and conspire to fuck you over. The internet is REALLY complex, even China doesn't manage to ban VPNs and they're quite motivated and their political system is pretty simple, in the west this is just flat out impossible.

in reply to Caleb James DeLisle

@cjd @anemone @feld China already dealt with this (mostly). Just block the ones that don't have an agreement with you as the government. John Doe can still connect to a VPN when he doesn't trust the cofeshop WiFi and the state still gets the data. And with corporate VPNs which do certainly have a use case, those are usually based around a cert, so either hand the cert to the government or involve them in some other way.

In another thread about UK/VPNs and others I've said this:
If they go full China and build a nationwide firewall, they have everything they need. But step 1 is making it illegal in the first place, then complaining that people are circumventing their "measures", which creates a pretext for creating it.

in reply to Phantasm

@phnt @anemone @feld @cjd I'm not an expert on this, but can someone create a VPN that works via steganography? Because from what I've heard, in countries that ban Tor, Tor bridges are still usable because they hide your Tor traffic in VoIP packets which makes it extremely hard to determine if you are using Tor in the first place. I wonder if the same can be done with VPNs.

I wasn’t aware Laura Loomer, who once handcuffed herself to Twitter’s office, now runs the US government. cyberscoop.com/jen-easterly-we…
in reply to Kevin Beaumont

Loomer’s been unofficially in charge of WH HR for a few months. The West Point story’s not even the only one *today* about federal personnel matters in which Loomer’s meddling. Of the people discussed in the linked VF article, Vinay Prasad isn’t someone whom I’d have imagined could be insufficiently MAGA to work for Trump. But it seems he couldn’t pass the Loomer test, whatever it is.

You know, I was just a little kid when history "ended" as the Wall came down and the USSR fell apart, but I do remember the sense of optimism from then. I remember being able to walk down the street by myself to the corner store -- wherever do you see those anymore? -- out of sight of the house, when I wasn't even ten years old, without anyone having to worry if I was safe or not.

I was around when Windows 95 came out, and I pissed off my best friend's parents by installing a pirated copy of it on their computer. I first got access to the internet in '98 through a BBS, and shortly afterwards through a real ISP connection. It was still the "World Wide Web" back then, when Gopher was still a recent memory. They called it "the information superhighway" and it was. There was so much you could find and learn if you just looked for it, from every corner of the globe and from any perspective.

I lived through the entire era of the free and open internet, and I watched as it was closed off, piece by piece, into the walled gardens of "Web 2.0" -- no longer a web at all, nothing but a glorified interactive cable TV subscription. I saw it. All that there was, all that's been lost, all that could have been. And I miss it so much.
