🍅 Aha. Now I know why so many of them suck.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tomato#B…

> The poor taste and lack of sugar in modern garden and commercial tomato varieties resulted from breeding tomatoes to ripen uniformly red. This change occurred after discovery of a mutant "u" phenotype in the mid-20th century, so named because the fruits ripened uniformly. This was widely cross-bred to produce red fruit without the typical green ring around the stem on un-crossbred varieties. Before this, most tomatoes produced more sugar during ripening, and were sweeter and more flavorful.

> 10–20% of the total carbon fixed in the fruit can be produced by photosynthesis in the developing fruit of the normal U phenotype. The u mutation encodes a factor that produces defective chloroplasts with lower density in developing fruit, making them a lighter green, and reducing sugar in the resulting ripe fruit by 10–15%. Perhaps more importantly, the fruit chloroplasts are remodelled during ripening into chlorophyll-free chromoplasts that synthesize and accumulate the carotenoids lycopene, β-carotene, and other metabolites that are sensory and nutritional assets of the ripe fruit. The potent chloroplasts in the dark-green shoulders of the "U" phenotype are beneficial here, but have the disadvantage of leaving green shoulders near the stems of the ripe fruit, and even cracked yellow shoulders. This is apparently because of oxidative stress due to overload of the photosynthetic chain in direct sunlight at high temperatures. Hence, genetic design of a commercial variety that combines the advantages of types "u" and "U" requires fine tuning, but may be feasible.

Wake up, New York! New Yorkers are struggling. Subway stations are dirty, crime is rising, and public schools are failing. The streets are littered, and entire communities remain forgotten. Mamdani’s budget priorities reflect none of that. Instead, they reflect the worldview of an activist who would rather fund symbolic causes than confront real problems.

Excerpt: In 2022, Senator Graham voted with the Biden administration 70% of the time. He supported the confirmation of Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court. Graham has been one of the Republican Party's most consistent advocates for amnesty—so much so that critics labeled his approach "Grahamnesty." It's time to for South Carolina to FIRE Lindsey Graham.

Dead & Co. live today in San Fran

John Mayer does a good job. I was quite skeptical of him when he first joined Dead & Co. on tour...but he's stuck with it and grew. Thanks for the good tunes Mr. Mayer.

Car insurance sucks, but you'd be outraged if, almost three months after you'd had your vehicle repaired (paid for by insurance), the body shop told you that the insurance payment had been "adjusted" and that you needed to pay them more money.

And yet that's exactly what happened with my health insurance. I had lab tests done on May 8. I paid. And yesterday I got an invoice in the mail, asking me to pay the "adjustment."

It's time to burn the whole system to the ground.

For nearly 60 years, CPB has carried out its Congressional mission to build and sustain a trusted public media system that informs, educates, and serves communities across the country. Through partnerships with local stations and producers, CPB has supported educational content, locally relevant journalism, emergency communications, cultural programming, and essential services for Americans in every community.

@GreenFire@mstdn.social [PBS](en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PBS) IS NOT CLOSING! #PBS is owned by it's member stations, not the Corporation for Public Broadcasting/ #CPB. For crying out loud! #USPol #PublicBroadcasting ---

@GreenFire@mstdn.socialCPB makes up, on average of, 15% of a local station's funding.

I have faith in PBS stations to (a) tighten the belt, and (b) come up with other sources of funding to make up for the deficit. At least until funding is restored.

It doesn't mean all will survive.

Some of the rural stations will most definitely die-off because CPB makes up far more than the 15% average of their funding, sometimes up to 80% for some rural stations.

And that's unfortunate.

But I have faith that the vast majority of PBS stations, and by extension PBS in-general, will survive this. Not unscathed. But will survive.

What CPB provided most of its funding to wasn't to PBS member stations.

It was to educational and cultural programs that were broadcasted on those PBS stations. So many favorite shows are going to end because there will be no more funding to continue them.

Nearly 9 out of 10 Israeli military investigations into allegations of war crimes or abuses by its soldiers since the start of the war in Gaza have been closed without finding fault or left without resolution

Unresolved investigations include the killing of at least 112 Palestinians queueing for flour in Gaza City in Feb. 2024, Action on Armed Violence said & an airstrike that killed 45 in an inferno at a tented camp in Rafah in May 2024.
