I think this survey from GBH says a lot, even though it is on the Fediverse. Overall the impact of AI that is the most visible to us is negative. It is not even close.
I do believe AI has its use, but what we are seeing on the Internet is not that use at all. Rather the opposite.
@jon, I think the main reason of the negative opinion respect AI is it's overhelming hype, like a kid with a new toy, in all ambits and the abuse of big corporations, using it to profile users, logging copyright content and privat messages for the own knowledge base, security and privacy concerns, etc.
The market is filled with over 7.000 AI apps and services of any kind, even inbuild in fridges and toasters.
AI can certainly very usefull in research, science, physics, medicine, etc.. but for the normal user a ChatBot don't really make much sense, less if he use it's often biased content, instead of the own intelligence and common sense.
The only AI which may be usefull for the user are some AI search engines, like those from DDG, Andisearch and few more, from privacy respecting authors, helping to find really what you are asking for, from reliable sources and adding these.

05.08.2025 : une pluie ininterrompue s’est abattue pendant la nuit, avec une fuite au plafond qui forma une flaque devant la tente de Clotaire, des chevaux qui auront essayés de rentrer dans l’abri à plusieurs reprises manquant d’enfoncer la tente de pierre, quand à moi ayant dormi sur une table un peu étroite le sommeil aura également été dur à trouver.
On profite d’une petite éclaircie pour partir, en fin de matinée. Après seulement 8 kilomètres on arrive devant quelques habitations et une école. La pluie reprend de plus belle et nous y plantons la tente en début d’après midi. A la réflexion, il nous semble avoir mis plus de temps à remballer et déballer les affaires, mais être en groupe permet de rigoler du temps plutôt que de le subir.

🟥GAZA🟥 Selon le Jerusalem Post, #Netanyahou a pris une décision fondamentale concernant l'occupation totale de #Gaza. Dans les prochains jours, la question sera soumise à la discussion du cabinet des ministres d'Israël. Netanyahu a décidé une occupation militaire totale de la bande de Gaza. Il a annoncé cette intention dans une vidéo publiée le 4 août 2025, déclarant que l’armée israélienne serait instruite pour occuper et soumettre le Hamas, malgré des réserves au sein de l’armée israélienne. Cette décision inclut des opérations militaires dans des zones où des otages sont présumés être détenus, ce qui suscite des inquiétudes quant à leur sécurité.
Netanyahu a réitéré ses trois objectifs principaux : éliminer le Hamas, libérer les otages israéliens (environ 50 restants, dont 20 seraient encore en vie), et s’assurer que Gaza ne représente plus une menace pour Israël. Il a insisté sur une opération «intensive» impliquant le déplacement de la population palestinienne vers le sud pour des raisons de «protection», mais cette mesure a été critiquée car elle s’apparente à une expulsion forcée. L’état-major de Tsahal a exprimé des réserves, estimant qu’une occupation totale visant à démanteler les infrastructures du Hamas pourrait prendre des années et mettrait en danger les otages. Le principal opposant à la résolution de la question de Gaza par la voie militaire est le chef d'état-major de l'armée israélienne, Eyal Zamir, ce qui a déjà fortement détérioré ses relations avec Netanyahou. Selon Zamir, l'occupation de Gaza exigera un très grand effort de la part d'une armée déjà très fatiguée. Zamir estime également que la priorité d' #Israël doit être la libération des otages, et non l'annexion du territoire.
Dans l'entourage de Netanyahou, la position du chef d'état-major est clairement source d'irritation. Mais, en fin de compte, soit Zamir présentera à Netanyahou un plan d'occupation militaire de Gaza, soit il sera contraint de partir. En revanche, des membres de la coalition d’extrême droite, comme Itamar Ben-Gvir et Bezalel Smotrich, soutiennent cette approche, prônant même un arrêt total de l’aide humanitaire et une conquête complète de Gaza. Plan post-conflit : Un document intitulé «Gaza Security and Recovery Program» (décembre 2023) exclut explicitement la souveraineté de l’Autorité palestinienne et la présence de l’UNRWA à Gaza. Ce plan, soutenu par des figures d’extrême droite comme Ohad Tal et Simcha Rothman, envisage un contrôle israélien à long terme, sans préciser si cela inclut une annexion formelle.
En ce qui concerne les négociations avec le #Hamas, c’est l’impasse. Les discussions pour un cessez-le-feu et la libération des otages sont au point mort. Le 25 juillet 2025, Netanyahu et l’envoyé spécial américain Steve #Witkoff ont accusé le Hamas de négocier de mauvaise foi, ce qui a entraîné le retrait des délégations israélienne et américaine des pourparlers au Qatar.
Les #États-Unis et Israël envisagent désormais un accord global («all or nothing») plutôt qu’un cessez-le-feu temporaire par phases, comme proposé précédemment. Cette approche, soutenue par Donald Trump, vise à libérer tous les otages et mettre fin à la guerre en une seule étape, mais elle est jugée difficile à réaliser, car le Hamas exige un cessez-le-feu complet, un retrait israélien total de Gaza et une reconstruction de l’enclave.
Le #Hamas a indiqué être prêt à reprendre les négociations, mais seulement si la crise humanitaire à #Gaza est résolue en priorité, notamment en augmentant l’aide alimentaire et médicale. Selon le bureau des médias de Gaza, il faudrait 600 camions d’aide par jour pour atténuer la #famine, alors que seulement 84 camions en moyenne entrent quotidiennement.
Des pays comme le Royaume-Uni, la France et le Canada menacent de reconnaître un État palestinien si Israël ne change pas de cap et n’autorise pas davantage d’aide humanitaire. Netanyahu rejette ces pressions, qualifiant la reconnaissance d’un État palestinien de «récompense au terrorisme».
Selon l’ONU, la situation à Gaza est désastreuse, avec plus de 93 % des enfants au bord de la #famine. Israël a levé partiellement le blocus en mai 2025, mais les restrictions persistent, et les convois d’aide sont souvent pillés par des civils désespérés ou des groupes organisés.
Les familles des otages et de nombreux responsables sécuritaires israéliens estiment qu’une offensive militaire accrue risque de condamner les otages restants. Des organisations humanitaires, comme le Conseil norvégien pour les réfugiés, dénoncent le plan israélien comme une tentative de «militariser» et «politiser» l’aide en aggravant la famine.
Malgré la pression internationale, #Netanyahu a décidé d'aller jusqu'au bout. Sans le "feu vert" des États-Unis, il n'aurait bien sûr pas pris une telle décision. #Trump est sans doute impatient de commencer à transformer Gaza, débarrassée des Palestiniens, en la Riviera du Moyen-Orient.

I think a lot of people don't know. I recently talked with someone whose parent lost their job at the Pentagon, but my acquaintance didn't know who Musk is. She gets all of her news from TikTok, and who knows what the algorithm is feeding her.
We've got the destruction of critical news sources and poor media literacy to contend with in addition to people being fascist (or okay with fascism).
Here is my local and anecdotal observation. I've been specifically looking at the drivers of facelifted Tesla models which have definitely been purchased within the last year for a while now here in the SF Bay Area. Easily 60% of drivers are Asian looking people, 30% Black. The white people are usually older, in their 70's. Very few white bro that fits the profile. I don't know what to make of it.

in reply to Jon S. von Tetzchner • • •@jon, I think the main reason of the negative opinion respect AI is it's overhelming hype, like a kid with a new toy, in all ambits and the abuse of big corporations, using it to profile users, logging copyright content and privat messages for the own knowledge base, security and privacy concerns, etc.
The market is filled with over 7.000 AI apps and services of any kind, even inbuild in fridges and toasters.
AI can certainly very usefull in research, science, physics, medicine, etc.. but for the normal user a ChatBot don't really make much sense, less if he use it's often biased content, instead of the own intelligence and common sense.
The only AI which may be usefull for the user are some AI search engines, like those from DDG, Andisearch and few more, from privacy respecting authors, helping to find really what you are asking for, from reliable sources and adding these.
