Honestly I'm still in a rough place and I know I'm being a bit one-dimensonal with what I keep posting about but my relatively new found hobby in leatherworking is really making me happy. Its not just the fun and fulfillment of designing and making something but I've had so many nice comments on my work from so many people, family, friends, internet strangers and even from professionals who have praised me on the designs and execution to the point where they expressed interest to work with me and my patterns. I even made a new friend from it, an older lady whom I keep in frequent contact with over email about things we are making.
It has been my dream for a while now to have a side hustle with this and this feels like a good first potential step into that world.
It's not one dimensionsional at all, I genuinely really like seeing it! I'm dreadful at crafts, so I'm always interested in other people's skills. It's really nice seeing how you're progressing and I can already see improvement. The fact actual professionals are praising you shows how well you're doing.

Thank you! I've always kind of been interested in making stuff but really struggled to find the right one for me - one where I could do the actual activity but also get my own creativity involved rather than only following patterns or other designs and I feel ive really found it.
I'm ok, just stress from work and life in general... Hot water died, house needs sorting out etc, just boring life things piling up in existing insecurities and stresses.

That's me! Thank you, im actually quite proud of that one! I actually attended a taster course which was about 4 hours at a local leatherworking supply place where we made a card holder. If you can find one I'd recommend it, it is very hand holdy and you get a nice item at the end of it.
They supplied the tools and after gave us a big deal on buying the stuff we used, which i used for quite a few little projects before looking into other tools and hardware like rivets and fasteners.
So what I would suggest as a mimimum:
Stitching chisels for making holes - I like the slanted french style but diamond is also good
Craft knife or scalpel and plenty of spare blades
Metal ruler
Scratch awl - for marking on the leather directly
Leather needles - i.e blunt tipped
Thread - 0.6-1mm waxed polyester, cheap chinese ones on aliexpress or ebay is all I use
Mallet for hitting the chisels - i use a nylon round headed one with a short handle but any is good so long as it isnt metal
Self healing cutting mat
Poundo board - a thick rubber mat that wont damage your chisels
Edge burnisher
Glue - you can get some fancy stuff but I started with a big tin of standard contact adhesive from my local diy store
Fine grit sandpaper
Card - for tracing patterns onto, stuff from a parcel will do
You dont need to spend much money at all, most can be found super cheap. The chisels should be a bit more, avoid the mega cheap chinese cast things and get a set around the £15-20 ($20-25) mark and they will do a good job.
As for the leather, look around for suppliers that do offcut boxes (even better if you can visit in person). All of my stuff so far has been made exclusively from offcuts.

This is the saddle stitching tutorial I was talking about - - there are plenty of tutorials that do it the more "traditional" style with a stitching pony, a stitching awl and pricking irons, that really isn't necessary for beginners.

For a decent tool quality-price balance for beginner stuff the "Wuta" branded stuff from China seems pretty decent - available on aliexpress or ebay - recommended for stuff like stitching chisels. Otherwise you roll the dice and get unbranded and unknown soft stuff that are instant paperweights or you are looking on the expensive professional side of things.
There are normally plenty of stores online that can help with a starter kit, you do tend to get quite a markup on it, most of the tools I realised were in my kit were just that - the mallet I linked above is less than £5 online but sold for £18 by the place I did the workshop at.

The prospects to learn new things (as in learn interesting facts, learn about technologies or animals and especially learn new skills). I mean, if i wasn't alive i wouldn't really notice but i also would't experience the joy of learning and mastering a new skill or hearing about new perspectives or grow as a person.
This is random, but chance encounters with animals. There's a paddock abutting my backyard that rarely gets used, but sometimes there are a couple of horses that get turned out into it. I'm always excited to see them and would love to meet them if they come to the fence line!
Also, I don't do this often, but yesterday I took myself out for tea. There's a cute tea cottage not too far away that offers a four-course afternoon tea. First course is quiche with dressed greens, second is a scone with clotted cream and lemon curd, third is a variety of finger sandwiches, and fourth course is a variety of dessert bites. So I brought my kindle and drank an entire pot of tea over the course of the meal. It was a real indulgence and definitely made me happy to be alive ;)

As a tall girl (like, really tall), where to buy clothes that had long enough sleeves to fit. I was confused for a long time because there isn't a single clothing store to my knowledge in the U.S. that actual sells tall sizes in the store. So I was buying T-shirts, dresses, and unflattering mens' clothes. But a lot of those stores do have tall sizes, just on their website and in limited quantities. All my friends are shorter, so no one in my life knew this, and generally have been skeptical when I tell them that no brick-and-mortars actually have anything that fits.
Another thing I've learned is that I should be slow to jump on seasonal clothes, and that you save money in the long run by spending more on clothes, or by buying vintage clothes that existed before the brands enshittified. Most of my favorite tops are vintage Eddie Bauers, LL Beans, and Long Tall Sallys that I've carefully picked up from Poshmark over the years, and they've really stood the test of time.
Aghhggh I have the same issue, I'm perma-uncomfortable. for a while, like 15+ years ago I had jeans custom made for me and it was bliss, but custom clothes are just not really feasible for me now. Tops are also a struggle so.. I would have to investigate if I can use the platform you mention in my country (orrr learn how to sew but I know that 'aint gonna happen).

The power of saying no. I've always felt like the little white lie was great as a social lubricant - e.g., "Oh I'd love to come to your housewarming party but I've already got plans that day" when you know full well that you're available but you just don't wanna go.
But after a while, making excuses and remembering them later gets to be stressful. Especially for me because I'm horrible at lying lol. So I've learned to say things like "Thanks for inviting me, but I'm gonna sit this one out." It's a polite but clear 'no' and now I don't have to keep up a fib going forward.
To be fair, sometimes people don't like being told no, but I've been surprised to see that they'll usually accept it gracefully.
My family (just my dads side i guess?) is horrible at taking no for an answer. It took me most of my life to realise they needed to be firmly (and quite literally) told to fuck off in order for them to take a NO seriously. Learning that is probably the only reason i still have any kind of relationship with my dad, i don't care to interact with the rest of them.

Like, I'm aware of there being exceptions like Penguins, Ostriches, and Bats. But in general, why is there such a distinct land/air split between mammals and birds? Why don't mammals share the ground with ecosystems of plant- and meat-eating walking birds? Why didn't we get birds that evolved to slither like snakes, or tunnel like rodents? Why isn't it (land+sky) all just mammals, where we'd have parrot- and vulture-like bats that don't lay eggs? If we started the simulation again, might things like this evolve?
The single, simple answer is the one that you don't want to hear: There is no clean split. Bats are a large and diverse group of flying mammals just like birds are a large and diverse group of flying dinosaurs.
The simplest answer I can come up with (because it's actually a very complicated and convoluted topic that I wouldn't truly do just anyway) is: Most birds can fly because they are an offshoot of one group of dinosaurs (avian dinosaurs) that survived the last great extinction when their non-flying non-avian dinosaur relatives did not. Basically the ones that couldn't fly mostly went extinct. And mammals mostly don't fly, which is possibly because several groups of vertebrates beat them to it and essentially filled all the niches that would have been available to flying animals, kind of blocking that path for them.
Obviously that's nowhere near the full story. There are lots of other factors at play, like some of the peculiarities of mammalian and dinosaur physiology that made one group better suited to flight than the other, ramifications of the great extinction that killed non-avian dinosaurs as well as most large animals in general and whole swaths of other species, and so on.

I suspect it's partly just coincidence. Prior to the K–Pg extinction, the sky was ruled by non-birds. Pterosaurs. In fact, the late Cretaceous saw some of the largest creatures to ever fly, like Quetzalcoatlus and Hatzegopteryx.
At the same time, it was also not mammals that ruled the ground, it was, as many an eight year-old can attest, dinosaurs.
The K–Pg extinction event may have killed off all the non-avian dinosaurs and pterosaurs, in part because of their larger size. So the very thing that made them "rule" before is what killed them off, and conversely, the very thing that kept avian dinosaurs (i.e., birds) and mammals from ruling during the Cretaceous is what allowed them to survive that event and evolve to fill the many niches vacated by non-avian dinosaurs after the event.

I've found with this type of text that if I try to read it normally, I struggle to process the change between the start and end of each word, and read much more slowly. If I try to read quickly though, it flows, as if I'm skimming the words but still understanding them properly.
I'm not ADHD, but that particular passage using that particular font and those particular colors seemed to speed up my ability to read the text. But when Staments posted below (lemmy.zip/post/45655234/206366…) using what looks like the same methodology, it ended up being an impediment. I struggled to even get through the first sentence.
So I have to wonder if there's more to it than just randomly putting a character or few in bold at the start of each word -- like maybe it's also highly dependent on things like the font being use and making sure to use specific words and phrases that are conducive to this technique.
To be fair, when I open that link, I get light gray text on a dark brown-or-yellow-greyish background which isn't that easily readable for me - at least contrast wise.
Reading this is like pointing an information machine gun on my brain and pulling the trigger. I read the first sentence faster and then the buffer overflows and I have to constantly stop reading or re-read stuff because the comprehension part of my brain cannot keep up. I feel like I naturally already kinda read like this, I don't read character for character but kinda skim words and know what it says. The image forces me to read in a very unnatural way because I cannot properly use the last part of the word for extra confidence in these predictions.
I love this in principle but I can’t use it myself. I‘m a very fast reader by default, basically already doing what the highlighting tries to make you do, without it needing to be there. The highlighting disrupts that for me. I end up stopping at every word and partially jumping back and forth. I do show this to people on occasion that aren’t as lucky as me with their reading speed and most said it helped them. Not all though.
@Stamets I took a speed reading course once, and what they do is train you to take in and comprehend a larger and larger box of text at a glance until you can take in whole pages in a fraction of a second, without the first letters being in bold.

The first thing I recently started doing on the NAS is virtual machines. I installed Virtual Machine manager, and it's pretty easy to use, you just create a VM, you select how many CPU cores and how much RAM you want, you create a virtual disk, and you select an ISO from the NAS storage, and you're good to go.
Another thing I run is Plex. It's a media server. I store movies and TV Shows in there, and I play these from my TV, with the Plex app. Plex was available as a one click install from the package center of Synology DiskStation manager.
I also use my NAS to run my own VPN. Of course, you do lose the access to a foreign IP, and some privacy, since, well the VPN gets your home Ip address, so the same that your computer might have had.
I use the VPN server app from the NAS's package manager, and I used OpenVPN. Setting things up was super easy, I just had to export the config file, and import it in GNOME's settings, after modifying the file to add the domain name that my NAS uses as the IP, and I also had to open the relevant port in my router's config, of course.
Another thing I use my NAS for is to stop paying for cloud photo and video storage. I use SYnology Photos here. It's a nice little app that you can run on your NAS and on your mobile devices. What it does is basically the same thing as Apple Photos, or GOogle Drive: you open the app, it backs everything up to your NAS, and you can access them from any web browser, manage albums
Now, for the most original use of a NAS: file storage and backups. To do that, I use the SYnology Drive client, which is available on Linux.
I use this app to create a backup of my /home directory, to my NAS storage. I also created a sync task to sync the photos that came from my phone, to my NAS, to my computer.
I also use my NAS as a file exchange thingy. When I record something on a test laptop for a video, I store all the recordings on the NAS, and I download them back from the computer I'll do the editing on.
All the storage is also accessible through Samba, so I can connect to it easily from my local network.
Now there are a few things I would like to try and setup here as well. The first one is Nextcloud. I'm planning to use the Container Manager app to use Docker and install Nextcloud with that, on the NAS.
Another thing I'd like to do is automating a download of the latest videos from my youtube subscription feed, and to create an RSS feed for that so I can use any podcast client or app to watch just these videos.
Another thing I'd like to try is to setup Kasm Workspaces: it's a self hostable solution to run desktops, operating systems, or apps remotely, and stream them to a web browser.
I'm pretty sure I can install that using Docker on the NAS, and replace the Virtual Machines manager that Synology offers with something open source. It probably won't change my workflow all that much, but open source solutions are just more my jam, and it's a fun project to try and tackle.

in reply to LadyButterfly she/her • • •Honestly I'm still in a rough place and I know I'm being a bit one-dimensonal with what I keep posting about but my relatively new found hobby in leatherworking is really making me happy. Its not just the fun and fulfillment of designing and making something but I've had so many nice comments on my work from so many people, family, friends, internet strangers and even from professionals who have praised me on the designs and execution to the point where they expressed interest to work with me and my patterns. I even made a new friend from it, an older lady whom I keep in frequent contact with over email about things we are making.
It has been my dream for a while now to have a side hustle with this and this feels like a good first potential step into that world.

It's really nice seeing how you're progressing and I can already see improvement. The fact actual professionals are praising you shows how well you're doing.

I've always kind of been interested in making stuff but really struggled to find the right one for me - one where I could do the actual activity but also get my own creativity involved rather than only following patterns or other designs and I feel ive really found it.
I'm ok, just stress from work and life in general... Hot water died, house needs sorting out etc, just boring life things piling up in existing insecurities and stresses.

I actually attended a taster course which was about 4 hours at a local leatherworking supply place where we made a card holder. If you can find one I'd recommend it, it is very hand holdy and you get a nice item at the end of it.
They supplied the tools and after gave us a big deal on buying the stuff we used, which i used for quite a few little projects before looking into other tools and hardware like rivets and fasteners.
So what I would suggest as a mimimum:
You dont need to spend much money at all, most can be found super cheap. The chisels should be a bit more, avoid the mega cheap chinese cast things and get a set around the £15-20 ($20-25) mark and they will do a good job.
As for the leather, look around for suppliers that do offcut boxes (even better if you can visit in person). All of my stuff so far has been made exclusively from offcuts.
On my phone atm but i can send a few links later. I would recommend watching corter leather on youtube as his stuff is easy to follow and isnt on the full old style cordwaining and saddlers type work which, as a beginner, is too much. His saddle stitch tutorial is particularly good.

in reply to klemptor • • •This is the saddle stitching tutorial I was talking about - - there are plenty of tutorials that do it the more "traditional" style with a stitching pony, a stitching awl and pricking irons, that really isn't necessary for beginners.
ebay.co.uk/itm/317041430785 is the kind of mallet I'm referring to, perfectly decent for the job and the price is more than acceptable.
For a decent tool quality-price balance for beginner stuff the "Wuta" branded stuff from China seems pretty decent - available on aliexpress or ebay - recommended for stuff like stitching chisels. Otherwise you roll the dice and get unbranded and unknown soft stuff that are instant paperweights or you are looking on the expensive professional side of things.
There are normally plenty of stores online that can help with a starter kit, you do tend to get quite a markup on it, most of the tools I realised were in my kit were just that - the mallet I linked above is less than £5 online but sold for £18 by the place I did the workshop at.

I mean, if i wasn't alive i wouldn't really notice but i also would't experience the joy of learning and mastering a new skill or hearing about new perspectives or grow as a person.

There's a paddock abutting my backyard that rarely gets used, but sometimes there are a couple of horses that get turned out into it. I'm always excited to see them and would love to meet them if they come to the fence line!
Also, I don't do this often, but yesterday I took myself out for tea. There's a cute tea cottage not too far away that offers a four-course afternoon tea. First course is quiche with dressed greens, second is a scone with clotted cream and lemon curd, third is a variety of finger sandwiches, and fourth course is a variety of dessert bites. So I brought my kindle and drank an entire pot of tea over the course of the meal. It was a real indulgence and definitely made me happy to be alive ;)
