yea so simulating a macpherson strut with a spring, embeddedin your assembly with dynamic spring compression, turns out to be more difficult than it should be.

that's ok i found a workaround just by splitting the strut assembly in 2 parts and estimating where the strut is going to bottom out and where it's going to rest by default. not ideal but i'm also gona make everything adjustable to optimize the physical part

It appears that, with no prior consultations, the departments of Religion and Classics (two separate units), and the programs in Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies, German & Scandinavian, Judaic Studies, Arabic Studies, and Holocaust Studies (the latter five all parts of a previously-consolidated mega unit called the Schnitzer* School of Global Studies and Languages) are facing imminent announcement of elimination (expected the week of Sept 7), with layoffs of pre-tenure, tenured, and career faculty in these units. The reason given is "financial exigency" -- university administrations across the country (and in blue states like Oregon also) appear to be giddy to use the Trump moment to dismantle the humanities.

Universities are in a very tough place. I think most people in academia understand what the dynamics are.. thanks to 2008 and the fertility drop off, there are a lot less kids hitting college age right now. Match that with the continuing erosion of government financing for higher education and especially the war on America being wage right now. Higher education is in a bad way in the US.

People often ask me, "how did you learn all of this stuff?"

And quite frankly, at one point in my life, I did, " ls /usr/bin"

and then read the man page for every single fucking thing in there.

and that attitude never stopped. Hell, that attitude existed for years before that moment. I read everything I can get my hands on.

But, I digress.

A few years later, I knew a thing or two about UNIX.

I read the fucking manual.

When I buy a new refrigerator, I read the fucking manual.

When I get a new stove, I read the fucking manual.

When my home's furnace stopped working on Dec 24 2012, I blew the technician on the phone's mind away because I had already read the fucking manual and knew what the flashing lights meant. I didn't have a fix from the manual, but based on my description, he lead me to a basic short term solution, got my house warm again, and saved me about $700 in emergency repairs.

Before I ever touched a computer, I was reading the fucking instructions.

I realize it is now high and mighty to place ourselves above end users who.... don't know how to RTFM.

But seriously.... don't sell yourself short.

RTFM will always pay out.

@The Psychotic Network Ferret It's all about staying curious. For me, it's just wanting something, wondering if it's possible, and reading up on related things with the goal in mind of achieving that thing.

A week ago, I'd never even really looked at PHP or CSS. But I wanted to make a theme for my fedi software. Now, I've made two of them, just from looking at the code and asking, "what the hell does that even do?", and reading to find out, a million times.

And breaking things. A lot of breaking things. Not being afraid to make the stuff that already mostly works not work whatsoever in an effort to eventually make it work perfectly.
