Je suis né à Gratosoglio, à l’époque une banlieue populaire de Milan. J’ai mûri cette envie à la suite d’une période d’occupation et d’autogestion de mon lycée. C’est une pratique assez commune en Italie. Je ne sais même plus pourquoi on manifestait, peut-être contre des coupes budgétaires dans l’éducation, mais c’était un moment fondateur. J’ai compris que les sciences politiques, c’est aussi de l’économie. J’ai choisi une licence en disciplines économiques et sociales, on avait des cours de droit, de sociologie. J’étais très épanoui, ça a ouvert mes horizons.
Je suis ensuite parti au Royaume-Uni pour mon doctorat. Ma thèse, à mi-chemin entre l’économie et la philosophie, portait sur la justice distributive. C’était très théorique, j’ai décidé ensuite de poursuivre mes recherches sur le terrain, en me penchant sur la propension psychologique des individus à agir ensemble pour le bien collectif. Je fais de l’économie comportementale, un champ de la science économique qui étudie le comportement des êtres humains dans les situations économiques.

Je m’intéresse à la façon dont les populations habitant sur ces petites îles s’adaptent au réchauffement de la planète. Qu’est-ce qui vous a le plus marqué lors de vos déplacements à travers le monde en mobilité douce ?
Je pense souvent à un jeune Indonésien avec lequel j’ai voyagé en car pendant trois jours et trois nuits de Djakarta à Medan. A notre arrivée, il a sorti de son sac une petite fiole contenant de minuscules fleurs, comme des marguerites, et me l’a offerte. J’ai interprété ce cadeau comme un geste de tendresse, mais aussi comme une tentative d’envoyer une part de lui en Europe, une terre qu’il fantasme comme un endroit où tout le monde est heureux. Ce garçon ne pourra probablement jamais prendre l’avion pour voyager. Dans les pays à faible revenu, une infime partie de la population prend l’avion [0,7 % de la population des pays à faible revenu ont accès à l’avion, 3 % pour ceux à revenu intermédiaire].
Cette rencontre me fait penser à un poème [Falsetto] d’Eugenio Montale. Au début, très bien. En 2019, je me suis rendu à Tokyo depuis Kiel pour une conférence, sans prendre d’avion. J’étais le chercheur modèle. Tout a basculé en 2022. Avec d’autres chercheurs, je me suis collé au sol dans le musée et showroom de la marque automobile Porsche, à Wolfsburg [en Basse-Saxe, en Allemagne]. Cette action a eu un fort écho dans la presse. A noter que la fondation Volkswagen [propriétaire de Porsche] finance la chaire Economie environnementale de l’IfW Kiel. Une semaine plus tard, j’ai reçu un avertissement de mon employeur : à la prochaine action de désobéissance civile, je serai licencié. Dix jours plus tard, j’ai participé au blocage de 11 aéroports de jets privés, dans différents pays. Je mène mes actions de désobéissance civile sur mon temps de vacances. En 2023, l’IfW Kiel a approuvé mon voyage, aller-retour, en Papouasie-Nouvelle-Guinée en mobilité douce.
L’institut m’a uniquement prévenu qu’il ne pourrait pas couvrir mon assurance lors de mon passage par le Pakistan et l’Iran. Donc, j’ai posé des congés non payés quand je suis passé par ces pays. J’aurais dû être rentré en Allemagne en septembre, mais ma recherche a pris du retard à cause d’une explosion volcanique et d’une prise d’otage où j’ai été menacé avec une machette. J’ai reçu un ultimatum brutal de mon employeur : si je ne rentrais pas au laboratoire sous cinq jours, ce qui impliquait de prendre l’avion, je perdais mon emploi. J’avais promis à toutes mes connaissances à Bougainville, qui subissent de plein fouet les conséquences du réchauffement climatique, que je ne prendrais plus jamais ce moyen de transport.

L’engagement peut abîmer les relations personnelles. Quand mon père a appris que j’allais donner une partie de mon indemnité à des associations, il s’est mis en colère. Il m’a rappelé qu’en travaillant une vie entière il avait pu mettre de côté 50 000 euros et que, moi, je jetais 75 000 euros. Rien que la bande-annonce du documentaire The Researcher l’a mis dans tous ses états, notamment la scène où je me fais embarquer par la sécurité pendant l’occupation d’un aéroport. Mon père a honte que je porte son nom de famille.
