PSA: PlaytronOS

Playtron has made some waves in Linux gaming. They have lots of big names in Linux working on the project. Recently they were featured by Framework today in their presentation. However, I think it's abundantly clear that anyone who cares about FOSS should stay far away from this.

I was intrigued by this as well some months ago. I even ignored when they blatantly lied about Valve/Steam locking down their OS to only play Steam games. So I gave it a try and installed it. On setup they wanted me to agree to a EULA. That was red flag #2. Never seen that before. Then they wanted me to agree to their privacy policy. It is a very typical corporate user-hostile privacy policy. Some highlights

So idk if it's just me or if this is happening to others, but Monero p2pool has been behaving oddly since earlier this week. The PPLNS window used to be something like 6 hours, but now suddenly it's dropped down to 1 or 2 hours... this is what p2pool main chain used to be.

I've confirmed via status output that I am indeed running on mini, not main, but p2pool is now behaving as thought it's on main. I used to reliably get several shares per day, even if they didn't always turn into payouts. Now it's been like a week with nothing... again, just like main chain used to be.

I've tried restarting the p2pool process, even rebooting the whole machine, but no change. I might have to blow out the entire container and re-create it just to see if that changes anything, but I feel like this shouldn't be happening.

The Soldier Who Assassinated Shireen Abu Akleh is Dead abolitionmedia.noblogs.org/190…

The Soldier Who Assassinated Shireen Abu Akleh is Dead

Palestinian journalist and US citizen Shireen Abu Akleh was martyred on May 11, 2022 while covering zionist crimes in Jenin. As the occupation typically does after deliberately targeting journalists, they denied any involvement, claiming that Palestinian resistance fighters had shot the Al-Jazeera journalist.

Independent investigations in the following months all came to the same conclusion: a zionist sniper had deliberately shot Abu Akleh, despite her being clearly marked as a journalist. In the meantime, occupation forces stormed the journalist’s funeral in Al-Quds, assaulting mourners and causing her coffin to fall. Naturally, the United States turned a blind eye to the murder of its citizen by virtue of the fact that her murderer was a zionist settler.

She was neither the first nor the last journalist assassinated in cold blood for reporting the truth: Over 210 Palestinian journalists have been martyred since the start of the occupation’s aggression on Gaza. The occupation has never pursued action against soldiers who target journalists, and the case of Shireen Abu Akleh was no exception: despite a halfhearted apology over a year later, the occupation refused to name the soldier responsible.

A new investigation sought to uncover the identity of this murderer. According to the documentary’s producers:

“Earlier this year, we did what the US failed to do and found Shireen’s killer. It turned out that the soldier who shot Shireen in Jenin was himself killed last year in the same West Bank city. The soldier, Alon Scagio, had been quietly transferred to a different unit after the ‘israeli’ investigation into Shireen’s death.” The operation in which the soldier was killed was recorded in detail on RNN here.

This is the fate of every foreign tyrant who has invaded the land of Palestine, delivered by the resistance, and paid for by the blood of the martyrs. It is worth noting that war criminal Scagio was not targeted for his brutal murder of Shireen: when confronting the criminal zionist entity, one can be sure that they are confronting a monster who is paying for their crimes.

Shireen Abu Akleh was avenged on the pure soil of Jenin, where she was martyred. Every Palestinian will be avenged on the same pure soil, until liberation.

Usernames using randomized nonsense

I've been noticing an influx of users with anonomized usernames (ie: fjdasklfpudiosa722104891fdaf20j.srv.us).

As a moderator this concerns me because it immediately triggers a 'this is a bot or nefarious actor' instinct. Is there any reason not to be wary these accounts?

in reply to Burstar

I've been using Fedi for a long time and from the very beginning I've been afraid of spam and bots ruining it, at least temporarily. Spam is still a problem with e-mail, and it's been around for 40 years and they've developed very sophisticated anti-spam mitigations for it.

in reply to symbolic

The problem is that most of the 'spam' comes from official things like websites that you've signed up to and didn't realise would also include dumb fkn emails periodically. And they don't always do it right away either. I've had emails suddenly start arriving from somewhere that I signed up to like a year before.

Personally, my spam mitigation is to have one email address for signing up to shit with. Then these assholes can email me until they're blue in the face and I don't care because the only time I ever visit that inbox is for verification. And then I have another email address for personal use that never gets used because who uses email for personal use these days?

In conclusion. Email is for signing up to things and collecting trash that I'll never look at.

A ton of things I have signed up for spam me with trash emails that they don't put in the 'sales' or 'offers' categories I unchecked. Just because I was forced to create an account to buy one thing doesn't mean I have a 'business relatiotionship' that justifies multiple daily reminders of what they have in stock.

😆😂🤣 Uuuuhh... Aaaah... I normally generate a random password and use it as my username for most services. Like even my bank.

This is because I've realized the username is mostly useless and is just a handle for my account. It doesn't matter to me if my username is jsmith, meow123, or kekxbek. In fact, it's easier if I don't have to come up with something novel or cool.

I'm a real boy. I promise. Not a malicious bot.

Although... If I were a malicious bot, that's exactly what I would say! 😲

Well, closing the SoundCloud account is now a priority. Even if I can opt out now, I don’t trust them to a) screw up or more likely b) add another bucketload of terms I have to explicitly opt out of and only find out about through things like this.
