I understand why people crave retribution and to make those who've harmed them suffer but institutions should be built to prevent suffering not cause it. it doesn't undo what was done, it doesn't prevent others from causing suffering, it just makes more suffering. prisons should exist to rehabilitate people if possible or keep them from causing suffering for the rest of society if not. they should not be treated as a way of harming people for a sense of retribution
