State of the Nvidia open source driver in late 2023?

Hi all,

I'm in the market for a new big desktop replacement gaming laptop, and looking at the market there are almost exclusively Nvidia powered.

I was wondering about the state of their new open-source driver. Can I run a plain vanilla kernel with only open source / upstream packages and drivers and expect to get a good experience? How is battery life, performance? Does DRI Prime and Vulkan based GPU selection "just work"?

The only alternative new for my market is a device with an Intel Arc A730M, which I currently think is going to be the one I end up buying.

Edit 19/11: Thanks for all the feedback everyone! Since the reactions were quite mixed - "it works perfectly for me" vs "it's a unmaintainable mess that breaks all the time", I'm going to err on the side of caution and look elsewhere. I found a used laptop with an AMD Radeon RX 6700M, which I'm going to check out the coming days. If not, I've also found Alienware sells their m16 laptop with an RX 7600M XT, which might be a good buy for me (I currently still rock an Alienware 17R1 from 2013 with an MXM card from a decomissioned industrial computer in it).

A response to the "Boycott Wayland" article

This OUTDATED article gets posted all the time. The full story is the guy is a massive FreeBSD fan so he is trying to convince more people to keep on using Xorg because he wants to make sure it isn't abandoned. Reason for that being that Wayland is built with Linux in mind and would not work under FreeBSD without a lot of effort bwing put in as it uses some Linux-specific components or libraries.

Let's go through the article point by point:

Wayland is broken by design:


  • A crash in the window manager takes down all running applications: Yes, because the compositor IS the server, window manager AND compositor at the same time.
  • You cannot do a lot of things: What, like allowing Windows to see your keystrokes, which makes developing a keylogger absolutely trivial?
  • There is not /usr/bin/wayland: Yes, because Wayland is a set of protocols, which a bunch of projects can implement as few or as many of, as they see fit, thus avoiding the issue of "unmaintainable mess" that has plagued Xorg for years.
  • It offloads work to the window manager: Again, yes, that's a part of its structure: do the protocols, then let the compositor implement them. That way, you have multiple implementations running simultaneously that are well integrated with their window managers and thus more efficient and performant. It also means that when a compositor suffers from too much cruft, we can just make a new one, while application developers wouldn't really have anything to change because if their application works on Wayland, then it works on different compositors (unless it is made specifically for GNOME, or specifically for wlroots, like wlr-randr)

....so what works on DE 1, doesn't necessarily work on DE 2: True, because oftentimes, it doesn't need to. Not implementing features can lead to a more lean and streamlined software solution. However, sometimes features are necessary and only implemented in some compositors. This usually happens because the universal solution is not ready. KDE are often known to do this with Plasma and KWin.

  • Wayland breaks screen recording applications: Correction: The following screen recording applications were not built to support Wayland (because Wayland is new to them or they just decided not to, or they were either too busy or too irresponsible enough to realise Wayland is coming, and has been for over 10 years. In defence of the devs, they probably wanted to make sure Wayland will become stable enough, but it has been the default even on Debian for many years now, so....

In terms of the applications, I'm not aware of many of them, and for this sort of application, I'm sire alot of work is required to change the graphical backend, so I understood that some smaller projects gave up, but OBS has been working on Wayland for quite a while. Is it perfect? I don't think so, but back when Brodie Robertson was using Hyprland, he was recording his videos using OBS. This article is quite outdated.

  • Wayland breaks screen sharing applications:

As the update shows, Jitsi now does work on Wayland.

Zoom only seemed to work on gnome, BUT if you open up the Link to the zoom issue and read through the comments, there is clearly a person that clearly states that they changed /etc/os-release from PureOS to debian and it worked for them, all because of some pointless limitations enforced by the Zoom developers. As the person posting the issue states "Currently, the zoom application has put an arbirtrary restriction on screensharing so it ONLY works on GNOME, when the api being used works on all wayland desktops." Read that again. It's a pointless restriction put there by the Zoom team because they couldn't be bothered to test anything non-GNOME.

And the last issue is a problem with the article writer's own appimage. I don't know about that one.

  • Wayland breaks automation software

As stated IN YOUR FACE, it is an application that works on X11 only. Yes, Wayland is not made to use such applications, but it doesn't mean they can't exist. Every heard of ydotool (remember that name)? Now you have.

Next up, we have 3 issues about GNOME and KDE global menus (1 for GNOME, 2 for KDE). From the little I know about global menus and using these projects, as well as considering that they are both incredibly stable on Wayland and Fedora KDE will be dropping Xorg completely, I think it's safe to assume these issues have probably been fixed. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

  • Wayland breaks AppImages that don't ship a special QT plugin: Great! Just ship the plugins then! Problem solved! Also, quote from the article: "However, there is a workaround: "AppImages which ship just the XCB plugin will automatically fallback to running in xwayland mode" (see below)."
  • Wayland breaks Redshift: Once again, a program built for Xorg doesn't always work on Wayland. Especially if it works with the compositor, like a colour temperature control application, or a wallpaper setter. The article quotes that "Redshift does not support Wayland since it offers no way to adjust the color temperature" which is not true, as proven by Redshift alternatives like Gammastep.
  • Wayland breaks global hotkeys: I present to you: Hyprland (where you can get global hotkeys). Now, it is normally not allowed by design, as a security measure, but Hyprland has not allowed that to stop them from implementing a solution where you can choose keys that will be passed on to the application. Boom, problem solved. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be implemented anywhere else, as far as I know.
  • Wayland does not work for XFCE: Come back to me in late 2024 after XFCE 4.20, which will introduce Wayland support, has been released. Also, wiki.xfce.org/releng/wayland_r…
  • Wayland does not work properly on Nvidia Hardware: It keeps on getting closer but is not there yet, or so I've heard. Apparently, the issue is with the proprietary drivers, as noveau works well. But I use AMD, so I'm only working off rumours and opinions here.
  • Wayland does not work properly on Intel hardware: Again, I'm using AMD, so I can't confirm or deny this, but considering the Intel drivers are open source, and I've heard about many, many improvements made on the Intel side of things, I think it would be reasonable to assume it has been fixed.

Edit: As multiple Intel users have pointed out in the comments, there seem to be no issues on Wayland with Intel hardware.

  • Wayland prevents GUI applications from running as root: This one has been crossed out as the article writer admits there is a solution
  • Wayland is biased towards Linux and breaks BSD: Arguments seem valid, and I'm guessing, are correct. This one is likely true and will remain so for the foreseeable future.

Edit: And yet, it seems that there are Wayland compositors for FreeBSD, so the above might only be true for OpenBSD and others.

  • Wayland complicates server side decorations: From what I've heard, this is true, mainly something to do with some GNOME agenda, as the article states. I think that one is true.
  • Wayland breaks windows raising/activating themselves: The linked issue is closed and seems to be resolved. There is a mention of a WIP protocol at the time (2019) that woukd fix this. I had difficulty following the discussion, but I think this has been fixed.
  • Wayland breaks RescueTime: Because RescueTime depends on X11-only tools like xprop.
  • Wayland breaks window manager: What you're describing is Wayland breaking X11-only tools for doing various tasks in a window manager. They are X11 tools, so of course they don't work on Wayland. I'm not sure if there are alternatives, but I'd guess there probably are. I know for a fact that Xrandr has alternatives like wlr-randr and kanshi for wlroots.
  • Wayland requires {instert WM here} to implement Xorg-like functionality:Yes, it does.

DEs: GNOME, KDE, MATE, XFCE, Cinnamon, Budgie, Enlightenment, and recently even Pantheon have either announced to start work on, have started work on, or already support Wayland.

Window managers: Qtile is doing it. Xmonad wants to hire a dev to do it. Dwm has a spiritual successor called dwl. i3 has a drop-in replacement called sway. Openbox has 2 spiritual successors called labwc and waybox. Now you might notice one of the biggest WMs is missing on here: AwesomeWM, which is such a shame. The Awesome devs have said they would be okay with someone taking on that challenge (which has already been attempted, as evidenced by the existence of way-cooler), but it seems that they wouldn't do it themselves.

As for the projects mentioned in the article, (JWM, TWM, XDM, IceWM) they are too small and obscure, and will likely fade away with Xorg.

  • Wayland breaks _NET_WM_STATE_SKIP_TASKBAR protocol I don't know about that one, ao I'll assume it is still the case. Edit: Ignoring the fact that the link is broken, it basically just links to a docs change where skipTaskbar is marked as unsupported on Linux. Link: github.com/electron/electron/p…
  • Wayland breaks NoMachine NX The link points to a page that has this marked as "SOLVED, Released in version 8" so I'm guessing it has been solved.
  • Wayland breaks Xclip: As you said it yourself, Xclip is an X11 application, so it doesn't work on Wayland. Of course it wouldn't work on Wayland. With Wayland, we're trying to prevent what happened with Xorg from happening again, or am I wrong?

Edit: As pointed out by some people in the comments, there are also alternatives to xclip like wl-clipboard.

  • Wayland breaks SUDO_ASKPASS: That link seems to point to the way this issue has been resolved so I don't see your point.
  • Wayland breaks X11 atoms: I lack knowledge on the topic so will assume this to be a valid argument
  • Wayland break games: I'm 99% sure you can disable Vsync??? But I'm not a gamer. Also, WINE on Wayland is getting better and better. Soon enough, I hope the subpar performance will become better performance (when compared to Xorg)
  • Wayland breaks xdotool: Well, yes. There is ydotool, but you're looking for a 1-to-1 replacement and I'm not sure if ydotool fits the bill for that.
  • Wayland breaks xkill: Well, yes. Again. It is an X application, so of course it does. Though for some reason I remember it working once on wayland. Must have been an xwayland app, or maybe I'm just misremembering this.
  • Wayland breaks screensavers: Yeah, that seems to be the case.
  • Wayland breaks setting the window position: That is a WIP for Plasma, not sure about any other projects, so assume true for anything else.
  • Wayland breaks color management: Not anymore. That is being actively worked on.
  • Wayland breaks DRM leasing: While not rhat familiar with the issue, my understanding of the topic is the article is correct: not all compositors support it.
  • Wayland breaks in-home streaming: Not familiar with this, so will assume true.
  • Wayland breaks NetWM/EWMH: Yeah, that seems to be the case.
  • Wayland breaks window icons: Yeah, that seems to be the case, as said in the article, when no .desktop files are used.

And that concludes my response to this article based on my fairly limited knowledge on the topic. If I got anything wrong, please, please let me know. As you can see my knowledge is quite limited, and as such, any corrections (preferably backed up with evidence) would be appreciated

There's infinity between should and does sometimes.

So it was already ext4.

I ended up manually running the steam console as described here. Still wasn't able to use the gui to add a drive but I was able to use the console command to do it manually. Then I restarted to make sure everything was working. On starting steam again it was gone! So I full exited steam and opened console again, and somehow it was there! So I set the option under settings to start on boot thinking that it'd run the console edition again on boot and I could live with that.

Well it turns out somehow there are now 2 steam installs on my computer. I'm not gonna touch it since it's working, but my working theory is somehow running the console created a second steam on my pc. It did act like it was doing a full install the first time I booted on command line. Weird. But like I said it's working now. I may poke at it later and see if I can uninstall the redundant one, but I kinda don't wanna poke it.

 Informações básicas, incluindo algumas pouco exploradas em várias discussões, sobre os componentes do heterossexismo e suas relações com outros sistemas de opressão.

Recomendação de leitura: Caso não tenha lido tal postagem ainda, recomendo que leia Vocabulário usado em círculos NHINCQ+ inclusivos. Vários termos citados são explicados aqui ou possuem links, mas acho que será mais fácil absorver as ideias principais do texto caso e leitore já saiba o que é uma orientação a-espectral, o que é uma orientação fluida, o motivo de "atração por gêneros diferentes" não ser uma definição adequada para hétero, e outras informações consideradas básicas para o assunto.

Aviso de conteúdo: Este texto explora heterossexismo e suas diversas vertentes, e contém exemplos de tudo isso. Também contém exemplos de sexonormatividade, amatonormatividade, cissexismo, diadismo e policiamento de gênero. Há algumas leves descrições (relativamente clínicas) de atos sexuais, coerção sexual e cirurgias em genitálias.

Heterossexismo é uma palavra que raramente precisa de explicação: afinal, pessoas que se deparam com ela geralmente já sabem o que é hétero (alguém binárie que sente atração somente pelo outro gênero binário), heterossexual (alguém hétero pelo menos em relação a orientação sexual) e sexismo (que, apesar do nome, geralmente é uma palavra utilizada em relação a opressão por gênero). Mesmo que alguém não tenha tido contato com a palavra sexismo ou com outras palavras que usam sexismo como sufixo, a familiaridade com os significados de palavras como racismo e machismo podem ajudar a dar contexto para qual deve ser o significado de heterossexismo.

Mesmo assim, isso não significa que não há nenhum lugar que defina heterossexismo por si só. Nestes casos, se define heterossexismo como algo em torno de "o sistema que oprime qualquer orientação que não seja hétero". Esta é uma boa definição e não pretendo desafiá-la, e sim elaborá-la.

O que vejo acontecer em muitas discussões é a redução de heterossexismo apenas a subtipos específicos de sua definição. Isso pode acontecer de forma maliciosa, mas também acontece sem querer, especialmente quando o conhecimento de tantas pessoas a respeito do assunto é pouco desenvolvido. O propósito deste texto é oferecer perspectivas mais incomuns sobre o que heterossexismo também engloba.

1. Duaricismo


Eu cunhei duaricismo para significar, basicamente, "a priorização de atrações e relacionamentos duáricos acima de outras possibilidades". Duárique também foi uma palavra que cunhei (ainda que com opiniões envolvidas de pessoas duáricas), e significa que alguém é de um gênero binário e sente atração pelo outro gênero binário, exclusivamente ou não. Um relacionamento entre um homem e uma mulher também pode ser chamado de duárico, assim como um relacionamento entre duas pessoas não-binárias pode ser chamado de enebeano.

A necessidade da cunhagem e do uso de duárique é a mesma necessidade da cunhagem e do uso de outros termos juvélicos: muitas vezes, há a necessidade de falar de um relacionamento ou de uma atração de forma específica, ainda que isso possa não representar a orientação inteira do(s) indivíduo(s).

Por exemplo, é comum haverem discussões sobre pessoas multi (que sentem atração por mais de um gênero) e o que acontece quando estão em relacionamentos duáricos. Chamar tais relacionamentos de "relacionamentos entre um homem e uma mulher" acaba sendo longo demais pra muitas pessoas, que preferem resumir isso como "relacionamentos hétero". Mas isso por si só traz a conotação de que a orientação que uma pessoa multi tem é definida por sue(s) parceire(s) atual(is), o que é uma forma comum de apagamento.

Da mesma forma, pessoas podem querer palavras para descrever que só sentiram atração por um gênero mas que não sabem se sentem atração por outros gêneros, ou para descrever a atração de personagens que não possuem orientação confirmada. E este vocabulário é útil mesmo em um contexto onde esta atração pode ser vista como "desinteressante", "normativa" ou "mais privilegiada".

Enfim, duaricismo é uma questão dentro de heterossexismo. Duaricismo inclui ver a atração duárica de alguém multi como mais real ou concreta do que outras atrações. Duaricismo inclui leis que só reconhecem casais formados por um homem e uma mulher. Duaricismo inclui a noção de que um beijo entre um homem e uma mulher é sempre mais inocente e romântico do que o mesmo beijo entre outras combinações entre gêneros. Duaricismo internalizado inclui demorar se perceber como alguém que não é duárique, mesmo após reconhecer ter atrações por outros gêneros.

Para quem já entrou em contato com vários materiais sobre heterossexismo, pode ser que todos estes exemplos já tenham sido absorvidos como exemplos de heterossexismo. Isso é porque duaricismo é uma parte da estrutura do heterossexismo. Porém, o erro cometido por muites é ver duaricismo como a única força que existe dentro do heterossexismo.

2. Alossexismo


Alossexismo (ou zedsexismo, para quem não gosta da palavra alossexual por suas origens) é a crença de que existe um nível normal e ideal de atração, especialmente (nas teorias até o momento) em relação às atrações sexual e romântica. É a priorização da atração de forma alo em detrimento das diversas possibilidades da a-espectralidade (característica do que é a-espectral; de pessoas que são assexuais, arromânticas, gris/gray, demi, lith, etc).

Alossexismo faz parte do heterossexismo porque quem não é alo não é viste como hétero. Ao menos não da forma que a heteronorma constrói o que é ser hétero.

Para acentuar que pessoas a-espectrais não são favorecidas completamente pela heteronorma ainda que sejam hétero em algum aspecto, existe gente que usa "alo-hétero" ou "heterossexual heterorromântique alo" ou similar para indicar que estão considerando alossexismo ao indicar qual é o grupo mais privilegiado em relação a orientações. Pessoalmente, eu não me importo em usar apenas hétero (ou completamente/somente hétero), porque o que indico com isso é que essas pessoas só podem ser descritas precisamente como hétero, enquanto uma pessoa arromântica heterodemissexual (entre outras possibilidades) não pode descrever precisamente sua orientação apenas como hétero.

Dentro de um sistema alossexista, pessoas que não sentem atração são vistas como pessoas que não sentiram atração ainda, ou como pessoas que estão escondendo algo. Pessoas que só conseguem sentir atração quase imediata de vez em quando ou nunca são vistas como reprimidas ou excessivamente determinadas a "se guardarem para a pessoa perfeita"; pessoas que nunca conseguem sentir atração quando se trata de pessoas conhecidas/interessadas são vistas como medrosas ou potencialmente abusivas. E todos estes casos são frequentemente vistos como questões a serem resolvidas.

Existe a questão da falta de atração ser ocasionalmente percebida como a possibilidade de ser gay/lésbica. Algumas pessoas usam isso para indicar que alossexismo não existe, ou não está dentro da heteronorma; "é só homomisia maldirecionada". Mas a questão de identidades a-espectrais serem percebidas como não-hétero precisa ser considerada por si só, e não só porque ela pode estar acompanhada de percepções limitadas sobre que orientações alguém pode ter.

Grupos a-espectrais e hétero podem perpetuar duaricismo. Grupos heterodissidentes e alo podem perpetuar alossexismo. Grupos a-espectrais que não são hétero podem sofrer tanto com alossexismo quanto com duaricismo. Mas todos estes grupos são afetados pela existência do heterossexismo estrutural.

3. Monossexismo


Monossexismo é, dependendo de quem definir, o sistema que prioriza atração por um gênero, ou o sistema que coloca gay/lésbica e hétero como os únicos, mais importantes ou mais dignos "polos" de atração. Eu deixei monossexismo para depois de alossexismo porque é uma questão que acredito que seja mais complexa, especialmente porque existem questões dentro de monossexismo que ainda não foram nomeadas e que são pouco discutidas, ainda que sejam importantes. Mesmo assim, acredito que alossexismo seja uma questão dentro do monossexismo.

Mesmo ao citar exemplos básicos de monossexismo contra pessoas multi - que são geralmente o foco de discussões sobre monossexismo - é possível ver que quase tudo não se aplica necessariamente apenas a pessoas multi. "Ou você gosta de homens ou de mulheres, o resto é frescura", "quem não é gay nem hétero só não se decidiu ainda", "todo mundo é meio assim" e "namorar a pessoa certa vai te fazer mudar de ideia" são expressões direcionadas não só a pessoas multi (sendo que isso não se reduz apenas a pessoas bi ou pan, e inclui orientações flexíveis), mas também a pessoas a-espectrais, de orientações fluidas e de orientações indefinidas.

Orientações fluidas e indefinidas muitas vezes são colocadas dentro de guarda-chuvas multi (ou até mesmo a-espectrais), mas vejo muitas pessoas nestes grupos não se sentirem confortáveis em se dizerem multi, ou em se dizerem multi em momentos que não se sentem atraídas por mais de um gênero. Por isso, acho adequado citar estes grupos separadamente.

Além disso, com o tempo, fui percebendo que há uma lógica monossexista repetidamente aplicada a diversas orientações, mesmo de pontos de vista "pró-bi" ou "pró-multi". Refiro-me ao apagamento e à intolerância contra identidades além de algumas "aceitáveis".

Muites conseguem ver que dizer que gay e hétero são as únicas orientações é monossexismo. Porém, lógica como "só existe atração por homens e por mulheres", "só existem pessoas L/G, hétero, bi ou assexuais" e "identidades multi além de bi e pan são inúteis" acabam sendo extensões deste pensamento.

Se os modelos de orientação são "homem que só se atrai por homens", "mulher que só se atrai por mulheres", "homem que só se atrai por mulheres" e "mulher que só se atrai por homens", é mais fácil estender este modelo para "pessoa que só se atrai por homens e mulheres" e "pessoa que não se atrai por ninguém" do que para "pessoa que geralmente se atrai por homens e às vezes por pessoas não-binárias sexualmente que só se atrai por mulheres e pessoas de identidades não-binárias femininas e neutras romanticamente".

É mais fácil ver atração por pessoas não-binárias como impossível a não ser que seja associada com categorizar estas pessoas como homens ou mulheres internamente; é mais fácil ver orientações a-espectrais na "área cinza" como desnecessárias; é mais fácil ver fluidez de atração como algo inexistente; é mais fácil julgar negativamente pessoas que não veem sua orientação como algo definível; é mais fácil querer empurrar todas as orientações "estranhas" para uma terceira orientação aceitável (geralmente bi), ignorando pessoas poli, toren, trixen, flexíveis, fluidas, que não querem ser categorizadas e afins que não veem tal simplificação como representativa de suas experiências.

Por isso, vejo qualquer esforço em "simplificar" e apagar/não reconhecer identidades além de um certo "grupo consagrado" como fundamentalmente monossexista, ainda que a retórica não seja exatamente sobre só considerar duas orientações válidas. Se existe reducionismo de gênero, é possível também falar de reducionismo de orientação, ainda que os conceitos não sejam completamente equivalentes porque reducionistas de orientação não necessariamente veem qualquer pessoa como "basicamente hétero" ou "basicamente lésbica/gay" (ainda que este tipo de retórica também exista).

Monoliminaridade e orientações mono que não são consagradas


O problema de considerar que monossexismo vai contra qualquer orientação que não seja "atração exclusiva pelo mesmo gênero" ou "atração exclusiva de um gênero binário pelo outro" é que existem orientações que são mono (no sentido de serem ou poderem ser definidas como atração por um gênero), mas que não se encaixam nestas definições.

São orientações que:

  • Definem atração exclusiva por um gênero, mas que não determinam quem está sentindo atração ou que determinam que quem está sentindo atração é uma pessoa não-binária (exemplos: feminamórique, home, neu caso "sem gênero" conte como "um gênero" nestas circunstâncias);
  • Definem atração por uma categoria, de forma que é possível alguém sentir atração por apenas um gênero e usar o rótulo, mesmo que também seja possível alguém sentir atração por vários gêneros e usar o mesmo rótulo (exemplos: iteri, cetero, proqua).

Dependendo do caso, pessoas de tais orientações podem não ser afetadas por retórica do tipo "ou você se atrai por um gênero ou por outro". Uma pessoa feminamórica não vai parecer indecisa em relação a sua atração única por mulheres. Uma pessoa viramórica não vai ter dificuldades em conseguir um relacionamento pelo medo de que a pessoa largue um homem por alguém de outro gênero.

Mesmo em casos de pessoas que poderiam se considerar multi que só sentem atração por uma categoria de gênero, não sei o quanto as mesmas suposições existentes sobre alguém que sente atração por múltiplos gêneros ("vai trair com outro gênero/sentir falta de alguém de outro gênero", "deve querer ter sempre mais de uma pessoa na cama", "é indecise sobre por quem se atrai", etc.) são direcionadas a pessoas que afirmam só sentir atração por pessoas de gêneros femininos, ou por pessoas xenogênero, ou por pessoas não-binárias.

Ainda assim, tais orientações são vistas como supérfluas ("muita gente sente essa atração e se define com rótulos que mais pessoas entendem"), inexistentes ("só existe atração por mulheres ou por homens"), específicas demais ("só use gay/hétero!") e temporárias ("eu também achava ser isso, mas eventualmente percebi que só estava me escondendo atrás de rótulos que ninguém conhece para não ter que lidar com o estigma de ser bi/lésbica/gay"). E estas opiniões são consideradas monossexistas quando são direcionadas a quem é multi.

Desta forma, seriam orientações como feminamórique monodissidentes? Seriam pessoas proquu que só se atraem por pessoas mascugênero ou pessoas iteri que só se atraem por maveriques monodissidentes? Eu não acho que faz muito sentido encaixá-las nesta definição. Mesmo assim, são orientações que sofrem com retórica monossexista, ao menos até separarem estas questões de monossexismo para deixar o conceito só para quem não tem como classificar a própria orientação como mono.

4. Periorientismo


Periorientismo talvez também seja uma cunhagem minha, mas não tenho certeza. É o sistema que prioriza pessoas que podem descrever sua orientação de forma precisa sem separá-la em vários tipos.

Alguém que só diz que é demibi, por ser demibi em qualquer tipo de atração que considere relevante (sexual e romântica, na maior parte dos casos), é periorientade. Alguém que é lésbica em sua orientação sexual e oniarromântique em sua orientação romântica é variorientade.

Existem pessoas que só consideram quem tem orientação sexual e romântica diferentes como variorientadas. Pessoalmente, não vejo porque alguém que é assexual, arromântique e poliqueerplatônique não deveria ser considerade variorientade, quando também deve enfrentar questionamentos sobre como é possível alguém não sentir certos tipos de atração mas sentir outros, uma gama menor de relações porque a maioria procura alguém que sinta atração sexual e romântica e exigências de só categorizar ou priorizar uma de suas orientações em detrimento do resto.

Existe também a questão de pessoas poderem ser tecnicamente variorientadas mas se colocarem como periorientadas, como pessoas que se dizem assexuais bissexuais por verem o rótulo bissexual como importante ainda que só sejam bi em orientações além da sexual, pessoas que se dizem lésbicas multi sem querer categorizar tais orientações em tipos diferentes mesmo quando são tipos diferentes e pessoas que são multi e/ou a-espectrais que sentem atração em condições diferentes e/ou por gêneros diferentes em tipos diferentes de atração mas que "cobrem" isso usando termos abrangentes. Não acho uma boa ideia categorizar tais experiências como periorientadas ou variorientadas sem permissão, mas acho que de qualquer forma tais pessoas são prejudicadas por periorientismo.

O padrão é ser periorientade. Não é à toa que vários lugares só colocam orientação como orientação sexual, sem fornecer espaço para que pessoas falem de suas orientações românticas, alternativas, queerplatônicas ou outras que desejarem. Não é à toa que se alguém disser que é pan, a suposição geral vai ser que a pessoa é pansexual e panromântica, ainda que uma pessoa pan possa ser panalternativa, caligorromântica e abrossexual.

Intolerância, apagamento e ausência de informação sobre pessoas variorientadas são frequentemente considerades questões a-espectrais, pelo conceito moderno de variorientação ter sido popularizado em espaços assexuais. Embora seja importante considerar periorientismo ao falar sobre questões que comunidades a-espectrais enfrentam, também é um problema que afeta pessoas variorientadas alo.

A questão alossexista de ver pessoas a-espectrais como incompletas por lhes faltarem atração às vezes serve como justificativa para que pessoas periorientistas "aceitem" a existência de pessoas a-espectrais variorientadas (ainda que de forma condicional e restrita, assim como pessoas heterodissidentes em relacionamentos duáricos também só recebem uma certa aceitação condicional e pouco firme de alguns grupos). No entanto, estas pessoas se mostram como periorientistas quando problematizam, criticam, fazem chacota e/ou duvidam de pessoas que sentem atração por mais gêneros em sua atração sexual ou romântica (como pessoas heterossexuais polirromânticas ou pansexuais que são gays em sua orientação romântica). A possibilidade e existência de pessoas que são alo e sentem atrações diferentes por gêneros diferentes (como pessoas gays heterorromânticas) também é frequentemente vista como impossível, ridícula e afins, ainda que uma outra pessoa já tenha se aberto como tal.

Periorientismo é uma questão que cabe dentro do monossexismo, já que qualquer pessoa variorientada não pode ser completamente mono (assim como qualquer pessoa a-espectral não pode ser completamente mono, já que isso envolve uma atração considerada "completa").

Síntese...?


Meu ponto com tudo isso é apontar que a orientação hétero centralizada pela heteronorma não é apenas formada pela definição de hétero como uma identidade que pode existir em contextos heterodissidentes. Heterossexismo coloca a orientação padrão/ideal/normal como:

  • Duárica (atração de mulheres por homens ou de homens por mulheres);
  • Definida por atração por apenas um gênero (mono, sem fluidez, flexibilidade, dúvidas ou atração por pessoas não-binárias);
  • Frequente e constante (alo, sem fluidez);
  • Periorientada (a pessoa tem que ser hétero em todas as orientações utilizadas para formar relacionamentos relevantes para a sociedade normativa);
  • Bem definida (não querer declarar fidelidade definitiva ao rótulo hétero só é permitido quando é para normalizar a identidade hétero, fora isso é um desvio inadequado);
  • Uma única orientação, pois as outras não existem ou não merecem nomes.

Pessoas que conseguem mais ou menos preencher alguns dos requerimentos podem ser coagidas a fingir que preenchem os outros. Pessoas que nitidamente não conseguem preencher os requerimentos são excluidas da sociedade heteronormativa ou de partes dela.

Porém, esta lista só leva em conta hétero como orientação por si só. A questão é que, num contexto eurocêntrico cristão, mesmo pessoas que preenchem os requerimentos da orientação hétero podem não ser completamente reconhecidas como tal, por conta de heterossexismo ter sido formado de forma muito interligada com outros sistemas de opressão.

Novamente, não estou falando que a definição de heterossexismo como o sistema que prejudica pessoas heterodissidentes está errada, ou mesmo incompleta. Porém, quando se fala sobre heterossexismo de forma mais abrangente, pode ser importante também levar em consideração quando grupos hétero não são vistos como tal.

Sexonormatividade


Sexonormatividade é uma palavra geralmente encontrada em contextos assexuais, e que é usada de forma muito similar a alossexismo. Porém, há lugares que mencionam que pessoas que não são assexuais também podem sofrer com sexonormatividade. Assim, acredito que sexonormatividade não seja somente a priorização da alossexualidade, mas também a ideia geral de que todo mundo precisa querer sexo, e de que todo relacionamento que envolva compromisso precisa envolver sexo.

Assim, pessoas com repulsa a sexo (algo que não é exclusivo de pessoas assexuais e nem de pessoas heterodissidentes em geral) ou que se recusam a fazer sexo em "circunstâncias esperadas" podem sofrer consequências por isso, inclusive consequências similares ao alossexismo e ao periorientismo: questionamento de como a pessoa pode ser de tal orientação quando não quer sexo, pressão para que a pessoa faça sexo quando não quer, acusações de que a pessoa precisa ser "consertada", etc.

Nota (17/09/20): @vitorrubiao@colorid.es apontou que sexonormatividade também age em relação a levar pessoas a acreditarem que há alguma idade onde todo mundo deve já ter tido relações sexuais, o que pode fazer com que pessoas tenham sua identidade hétero questionada mesmo que não tenham tido oportunidade ou vontade de ter relações sexuais até aquele momento.

Amatonormatividade


Amatonormatividade é uma palavra que pode ser encontrada em vários textos sobre poliamor ou arromanticidade, mas ele surgiu em um contexto feminista. É um conceito que descreve o ideal social de alguém achar a pessoa perfeita, se apaixonar, formar um relacionamento e viver "feliz para sempre".

No caso de pessoas arromânticas, esse ideal de um dia achar o par romântico perfeito é ofensivo e tem uma conotação de "curar a orientação". No caso de pessoas não-monogâmicas, a ideia de ter um relacionamento só que seja perfeito é questionada não só em relação ao número de pessoas, mas também em questão de colocar uma busca por relacionamentos perfeitos como central e como um objetivo de vida. No caso de mulheres, amatonormatividade é um problema por haver aquele ideal de que toda mulher precisa ser uma mãe e ter cuidar de uma família como objetivo de vida, mais cedo e de forma mais forte do que acontece com homens.

Assim como sexonormatividade pode fazer com que pessoas hétero possam ser vistas como heterodissidentes em certas circunstâncias, amatonormatividade também pode pressionar pessoas hétero a buscar relacionamentos românticos quando não querem eles tanto assim, ou prejudicar pessoas hétero que "ainda" não formaram laços românticos em certa idade.

Cissexismo e diadismo


Ainda que pessoas hétero possam sentir atração por pessoas do outro gênero binário independentemente de sua corporalidade, existe a noção social de que um homem transando com alguém com um pênis é um sinal de que aquele homem sente atração por homens (por exemplo). Também existe a noção de que pessoas trans e hétero são "lésbicas/gays que decidiram ser do outro gênero binário", ou por considerarem expressões de gênero fora do padrão como "mais heterodissidentes" ou por verem pessoas trans como obcecadas por "enganar" pessoas cis e hétero ao conseguir fazer "sexo gay/lésbico" com elas.

Isso faz com que, por conta do cissexismo (pessoas cisdissidentes não são vistas como pessoas que realmente são de seu gênero), há a possibilidade de que pessoas trans hétero e/ou sues parceires hétero sejam vistes como heterodissidentes.

Outra coisa que acontece é um julgamento do quanto uma pessoa trans precisa "passar" (ser vista como cis) e/ou de que cirurgias precisa fazer para que tenha acesso à identidade hétero, ou para que sues parceires deixem de ser vistes como "queers enrustides".

Com pessoas ipsogênero (intersexo, mas que são do gênero atribuído ao nascimento), acredito que funcione de forma um pouco diferente. Nem toda pessoa intersexo é visivelmente intersexo, e muitas pessoas intersexo são vistas como "perissexo mas com alguma doença/síndrome/diferença". Então, por exemplo, uma mulher ipsogênero com cromossomos XY pode não ser necessariamente reconhecida como uma "ameaça" à orientação hétero de seus parceiros.

Mesmo assim, existem pessoas ipsogênero que são confundidas com pessoas trans por causa de efeitos hormonais (como homens com seios ou mulheres com barba), ou pessoas ipsogênero cuja genitália não é própria para penetração de pênis em vagina (por natureza ou por conta de cirurgias incompletas ou que deram errado). Eu não tenho histórias que possam confirmar isso, mas não duvido que tais pessoas possam passar por exclusões da sociedade hétero da mesma forma que pessoas trans.

Expressões de gênero não normativas


A ideia de que homens hétero são desleixados, não tocam em outros homens e não usam nada rosa e de que mulheres hétero são boas cozinheiras, vaidosas e emocionais na verdade não tem nada a ver com ser hétero: tem a ver com cumprir papéis de gênero. Porém, como já mencionei, isso acabou sendo misturado em uma ideia do que é ser hétero por questões históricas (de ver gênero e orientação como similares).

A pressão social para cumprir papéis de gênero em cima de pessoas hétero geralmente é mais focada nela mesma do que em questões de orientação, mas a aversão à heterodissidência pode ser usada como combustível para evitar ou atacar quem tiver comportamentos que não cumprem os papéis de gênero esperados.

Por exemplo: uma menina é excluída das outras na escola por gostar de jogar futebol; um menino é repreendido por querer uma bicicleta rosa; dois irmãos se abraçando em um lugar público são atacados por serem confundidos com um par romântico; uma adolescente é forçada a parar de usar calças camufladas e camisas retas. Nada disso demonstra ausência de atração duárica ou presença de atração pelo mesmo gênero ou por pessoas não-binárias, mas as intervenções provavelmente seriam justificadas de forma heterossexista.

Isso também inclui o julgamento de certos fetiches e de certas posições sexuais como indicações de que alguém não seria ("totalmente") hétero.

Outras possibilidades


Eu não cheguei a ler sobre isso a ponto de ter certeza sobre qualquer coisa a respeito, mas eu não duvido que outros fatores, como neurodivergência, raça, religião, participação em trabalho sexual ou qualquer outra coisa também afetem a percepção da sociedade heterossexista sobre alguém "realmente ser" hétero, para além de percepções estereotipadas de expressões de gênero em um contexto eurocêntrico.

Nota (17/09/20): @vitorrubiao@colorid.es apontou que pessoas soropositivas hétero são frequentemente acusadas de heterodissidência, pela associação histórica da transmissão de HIV a comunidades NHINCQ+.

Existe uma necessidade de combater e denunciar pensamentos advindos do heterossexismo mesmo dentro de grupos compostos por uma maioria ou totalidade heterodissidente. O objetivo deste texto é ajudar pessoas com pouco contato com questões relacionadas a heterossexismo a refletir mais sobre partes pouco divulgadas desta ideologia. Espero que este texto tenha sido informativo para alguém que teve paciência de lê-lo até o fim.

Algumas destas informações talvez fiquem obsoletas ou estranhas daqui a alguns anos, porque qualquer modelo teórico de opressão precisa se adaptar a novas conversas ou a informações previamente desconsideradas. Mas, no momento, este texto como está parece fazer sentido em relação ao material com o qual tenho contato.

PipeWire 1.0 RC released (Final release expected end 2023)

This is the first 1.0 release candidate that is API and ABI compatible
with previous 0.3.x releases.

Highlights

  • jackdbus support is now enabled by default.
  • IRQ based scheduling in ALSA was improved and enabled by default for
    Pro-Audio profile. It will also link the pcms together to get lower
    latency. This now matches what JACK does and results in equal latency
    for Pro-Audio profiles.
  • Support both old and new versions of webrtc-audio-processing to make
    the transition easier.
  • Forced quantum changes by nodes or metadata will now also force a
    suspend and resume of the graph, like the rate changes to make sure all
    nodes adapt to the new quantum. This is important for Pro-Audio nodes
    that need to reconfigure the hardware to a new period in IRQ based
    scheduling.
  • Fix a regression in regex parsing.
  • Many bugfixes and improvements.

PipeWire

  • Jackdbus is by default enabled now. The idea is that when jackdbus is
    installed, the real libjack.so is in the path and we can become a
    real JACK client.
  • Forces quantum changes by nodes or metadata will now also force a
    suspend and resume in the graph, like the rate changes to make sure all
    nodes adapt to the new quantum. This is important for Pro-Audio nodes
    that need to reconfigure the hardware to a new period.
  • The stream now has an EARLY_PROCESS option that can be used to implement custom buffer fill levels. (#3480)
  • Fix a regression in regex parsing. (#3528)
  • Fix a bug in position reporting in the driver node. (#3189) (#3544)
  • Destroying a link will now recalculate the graph correctly.
  • Fix the rate comparison for finding the best rate in the graph.
  • Use malloc_trim() when available to release memory. (#1840)

Tools

  • pw-cat now supports DFF DSD files.
  • pw-cli avoid some NULL derefs in some cases.

Modules

  • The RAOP sink has seen some cleanups and improvements. It will now ask
    for feedback every 2 seconds to keep some devices alive.
  • A bug in filter-chain was fixed where it would fail to apply the gain
    when mixing just one source.
  • The filter-chain can now pass the stream volume to a control in the
    filter-chain graph. (#3434)
  • Improve volume handling in RAOP sink.

Pulse-server

  • Some cleanup in the pending_stream handling.
  • Fix a regression in the event emission code where it failed to emit
    a changed event when a node was linked. (#3522)
  • Lower the realtime priority of pulseaudio clients.
  • Set pulse.module.id on the echo-cancel streams. (#3541)

SPA

  • Improvements to the codec handling when PipeWire is used as Audio
    Gateway.
  • Adapt to new Bluez API for BAP devices.

JACK

  • When the jack library is set in the default library path, avoid using
    LD_LIBRARY_PATH because this can cause confusion.
  • Handle clearing the latency on a port.
  • jack_property now always manages to actually change the metadata because it waits for a roundtrip before exiting.
