So they were trying to patch systems that use GRUB for Windows-only installs? What a load of BS. Why would anybody install GRUB to boot only Windows with that? Or am I overlooking something?
Furthermore, if GRUB has a security issue, they should've contributed a patch at the source instead of patching it themselves somehow. I'm a bit stunned at the audacity of touching unmounted filesystems in an OS patch. Good thing Windows still doesn't include EXT4 and BTRFS drivers because they might start messing with unencrypted Linux system drives at this rate
@Nicht BurningTurtle The Pentium II is 32-bit and possesses an MMU, so provided you have adequate memory, pretty much any 32-bit distro such as puppy linux or antix should work fine. Newer Ubuntu which is now 64-bit only will not.
I've only ever used desktop Linux and don't have server admin experience (unless you count hosting Minecraft servers on my personal machine lol). Currently using Artix and Void for my desktop computers as I've grown fond of runit.
I'm going to get a VPS for some personal projects and am at the point of deciding what distro I want to use. While I imagine that systemd is generally the best for servers due to the far more widespread support (therefore it's better for the stability needs of a server), I have a somewhat high threat model compared to most people so I was wondering if maybe I should use something like runit instead which is much smaller and less vulnerable. Security needs are also the reason why I'm leaning away from using something like Debian, because how outdated the packages are would likely leave me open to vulnerabilities. Correct me if I'm misunderstanding any of that though.
Other than that I'm not sure what considerations there are to make for my server distro. Maybe a more mainstream distro would be more likely to have the software in its repos that I need to host my various projects. On the other hand, I don't have any experience with, say, Fedora, and it'd probably be a lot easier for me to stick to something I know.
In terms of what I want to do with the VPS, it'll be more general-purpose and hosting a few different projects. Currently thinking of hosting a Matrix instance, a Mastodon instance, a NextCloud instance, an SMTP server, and a light website, but I'm sure I'll want to stick more miscellaneous stuff on there too.
So what distro do you use for your server hosting? What things should I consider when picking a distro?
Always, always, always: Debian. It's not even a debate. Ubuntu is a mess for using as a server with their snaps bullshit. Leave that trash on the desktop, it's a mess on a server.
That's a frightening statement. I don't work in secret-squirrel shit these days, but I do private-squirrel stuff, and snaps are just everything our security guys wake up at night to, screaming. Back when I ran security for a company, the entire idea would have been an insta-fuckno . Please, carefully reconsider the choices that put you in a position where snaps are the best answer.
@communism Only difference between a "server" distro and a "desktop" distro are what packages are included, and given that most all distros put all the packages on their repositories you can start with any and tailor to your needs.

I'm trying to get a job in IT that will (hopefully) pay more than a usual 9 to 5. I'm been daily driving Linux exclusively for about 2 1/2 years now and I'm trying to improve my skills to the point that I could be considered a so-called "power user." My question is this: will this increase my hiring chances significantly or marginally?
I started editing this video in Resolve and this is the first time I went back to Kdenlive. It's truly gotten so much better. Years ago it just crashed a lot and once even corrupted my save file.
The current version is amazingly fluid. Some of the updates in Resolve has made their timeline clunkier, or maybe it's just been so long I've forgotten how their UI works. The free version of Resolve also can't handle a lot of the codecs using in my recording gear, where Kdenlive can handle them or offers to automatically transcodes them on import.
If you edit video and haven't tried Kdenlive in a while, give it another shot. It's one less thing I need a windows or mac box for.
For what its worth, I know that while a lot of the hardcore Linux community seems to absolutely despise Ubuntu/Canonical because of snaps and whatnot, I don't think there is anything actually wrong with using Ubuntu if that is what works for you. Use the best tool for the job!
I had an Acer laptop once. I had Ubuntu on it. I had problems with random crashing after a few minutes, I ran memtest, it took a few hours for a full test and came back with a whole slew of faults. I sent it to Acer under warranty and they told me that Linux was the problem and I should leave windows on it.
@gpstarman I only use Asus and Gigabyte boards, both have the ability to flash the BIOS using the maintenance engine on the board without even having a CPU or memory installed, let alone an OS booted.

Either self-hosted or cloud, I assume many of you keep a server around for personal things. And I'm curious about the cool stuff you've got running on your personal servers.
What services do you host? Any unique stuff? Do you interact with it through ssh, termux, web server?
Two old HP thin client PCs configured as 4TB SFTP file servers using vsftpd on Debian. Each one uses software RAID 1 with both an NVMe and SATA SSD internally, and are in two separate locations with a cron job which syncs one to the other every 24 hours.
People who actually know what they are doing will probably find this silly, but I had fun and learned a lot setting it up.
I am using lftp and mirror. One server functions as the "main" server, which mirrors the backup server to itself once per day at a specific time (they both run 24/7 so I set it to run very early in the morning when it is unlikely to be accessed).
In my crontab I have:

This isn't a gloat post. In fact, I was completely oblivious to this massive outage until I tried to check my bank balance and it wouldn't log in.
Apparently Visa Paywave, banks, some TV networks, EFTPOS, etc. have gone down. Flights have had to be cancelled as some airlines systems have also gone down. Gas stations and public transport systems inoperable. As well as numerous Windows systems and Microsoft services affected. (At least according to one of my local MSMs.)
Seems insane to me that one company's messed up update could cause so much global disruption and so many systems gone down :/ This is exactly why centralisation of services and large corporations gobbling up smaller companies and becoming behemoth services is so dangerous.
Latest Crowdstrike Update Issue: The issue seems widespread, affecting machines running various CrowdStrike sensor versions. CrowdStrike has acknowledged the problem and is currently investigating the cause.
I isn't even a Linux vs Windows thing but a competent at your job vs don't know what the fuck you are doing thing. Critical systems are immutable and isolated or as close as reasonably possible. They don't do live updates of third party software and certainly not software that is running privileged and can crash the operating system.
I couldn't face working in corporate IT with this sort of bullshit going on.
A while back there was some debate about the Linux kernel dropping support for some very old GPUs. (I can't remember the exact models, but they were roughly from the late 90's)
It spurred a lot of discussion on how many years of hardware support is reasonable to expect.

The fact that some people were mad that their 25 year old GPU wouldn't be officially supported by the latest Linux kernel seemed pretty silly to me. At that point, the machine is a vintage piece of tech history. Valuable in its own right, and very cool to keep alive, but I don't think it's unreasonable for the devs to drop it after two and a half decades.
I think for me, a 10 year minimum seems reasonable.
And obviously, much of this work is for little to no pay, so love and gratitude to all the devs that help keep this incredible community and ecosystem alive!
I undertook a sizeable upgrade today, bringing a skylake era build into the 2020s with a 13th gen. All core components- memory, motherboard, GPU, everything must go... except the drives. We were nervous, my friend really felt we should reinstall. There was debate, and drama. Considerations and exceptions. No, I couldn't let my OS go. I have spent years tweaking and tuning, molding my ideal computing environment. We pushed forward.
Well I'm pleased to say it was mostly uneventful. The ethernet adapter was renamed causing misconfigured dhcp, but otherwise it booted right up like nothing happened. Sorry, linux is boring now.

@Spirillen I know. I'm 66 now and even when I was young I liked much older music, so my collection goes from classical to techno and everything in between and some of the vinyl I have has been played until it's grey, more of a noise to signal ratio these days.
I'm 50, so even though our music preferences might differ due to our age, I definitely appreciate your perspective. There's nothing quite like vinyl; it offers a richness of sound that digital formats often can't match. Vinyl can capture a wider range of tones simultaneously, unlike the limited frequency range of today's 16-bit media. I also think there's something to be said for the way our ears are naturally attuned to analogue sounds rather than the sharp, digital notes.

I'm aware of that one, but I don't recall the audio track to be better. If you have the link, I can download it and compare. Alphabet is deliberately blacklisted here for privacy and security reasons. 😉
@Spirillen Not all digital media is 16 bit and actually it's not the bits that is the issue bit the bits per second. 16 bits is sufficient for around 104 Db S/N, that's at least 50db better than the cleanest vinyl. But with 44 Khz sampling the highest frequency you can reproduce is half of that, 22 Khz but because of heterodyning, you get beat notes generated between the audio and half the sampling frequency, so while you can reproduce a 15Khz tone, the result includes a 7Khz beat. The audio industry just decided that there wasn't enough audio energy up there that we would notice, but I notice it particularly with percussion, cymbals in particular, turns a nice metallic resonance into so much white noise. This in my view is the primary advantage of vinyl. A secondary advantage is that digital clips hard, once you're at all one's there is no higher value, but analog tends to clip less harshly, especially old analog tape recorders and tube amplifiers. So recording engineers that didn't account for overhead did less damage to the audio with vinyl than then do with digital. That said, I have some music on DVD's recorded at 192kb/s and 24 bits and the audio quality is excellent.
New this isn't my primary field... but my years for sure the vinyl and my old amplifier over that new scrappy Denon, my 20(5) years old Sony AS50ES beats it in the amplified sound. The major diff I expect is the Sony is build for the analogue segment tape(s) and vinyl while the Crapon is build for digital devices like CD,THX Thanks for the lesson
@Spirillen Marsupilami @Spirillen Well probably worth stating that at one time I held a 1st class radio telephone license, did broadcast engineering, at another worked at a recording studio, and then for a time did sound reinforcement work at live events, and yet another did home electronics repair at Electricraft, a high end stereo store no longer in existence. Today my main sound system consists of an old Radio Shack STA-2000 receiver which is rated at 75 watts per channel but actually measured clips at 104 watts, and JBL-S3811 studio monitors, would prefer something larger and more efficient but space limitations, still these are very flat over a very wide audio range but they are not very sensitive so that 75 watts / ch doesn't make as much sound pressure level as I would like. Secondary system consists of a heavily modified pair of Optimis T100 tower speakers, modifications include ports, originally they were not ported but had a horrid resonance at 60Hz, porting them brought that down to the high 40's, still higher than I would like, changed woofers for woofers with longer throw and bigger magnets, and a Vifa titanium dome tweeter. These don't go quite as low nor are they are flat as the JBLs and they don't have mid-ranges so they are prone to intermodulation distortion, I've got them on an Aiwa receiver that in two channel mode is 170 watts/channel, between that and the speakers being a lot more sensitive they make a lot more sound but not as high quality, primary these are for television / movies. I've got about 500 or so vinyl albums and around 3000 singles (45's) but all heavily worn so most of the music I listen to these days is digital.

on a positive note i learned a lot about how to make bridge and dummy virtual adapaters and routing and stuff using NetworkManager and nmcli. fedora 42 deprecated the previous network service and i had this non-standard routing configuration that it couldn't auto-import, so i had to figure a few things out

I have tried Linux as a DD on and off for years but about a year ago I decided to commit to it no matter the cost. First with Mint, then Ubuntu and a few others sprinkled in briefly. Both are "mainstream" "beginner friendly" distros, right? I don't want anything too advanced, right?
Well, ubuntu recently updated and it broke my second monitor (Ubuntu detected it but the monitor had "no signal"). After trying to fix it for a week, I decided to wipe it and reinstall. No luck. I tried a few other distros that had the same issue and I started to wonder if it was a hardware issue but I tried a Windows PC and the monitor worked no problem.
Finally, just to see what would happen I tried a distro very very different than what I'm used to: Fedora (Kinoite). And not only did everything "just work" flawlessly, but it's so much faster and more polished than I ever knew Linux to be!
Credit where it's due, a lot of the polish is due to KDE plasma. I'd never strayed from Gnome because I'm not an expert and people recommend GNOME to Linux newbies because it's "simple" and "customizable" but WOW is KDE SO MUCH SIMPLER AND STILL CUSTOMIZEABLE. Gnome is only "simple" in that it doesn't allow you to do much via the GUI. With Fedora Kinode I think I needed to use the terminal maybe once during setup? With other distros I was constantly needed to use the terminal (yes its helped me learn Linux but that curve is STEEP).
The atomic updates are fantastic too. I have not crashed once in the two weeks of setup whereas before I would have a crash maybe 1-2 times per week.
I am FULLY prepared for the responses demanding to know what I did to make it crash and telling me how I was using it wrong blah blah blah but let me tell you, if you are experienced with Windows but want to learn Linux and getting frustrated by all the "beginner" distros that get recommended, do yourself a favor and try Fedora Kinoite!
