Future owner, it turned on a crappy fluorescent light in the pantry I never used or thought about until today, when the damn thing started falling out while I was putting away groceries. The electrician was already here trying to fix the piece-of-crap ceiling fan, so I asked him to take the stupid thing out, which he did, capping exposed wires and stuffing them into unseen holes.

We’re really sorry to say this, but lemm.ee will be shutting down on June 30, 2025.

What you need to know


As of now:

  • New user registrations are disabled
  • Creating new communities is disabled

What you should do:

  • You can export your settings at lemm.ee/settings to take them with you to another instance.
  • If you're moving to another instance, consider adding a note to your lemm.ee profile with your new username. Your old profile will still be visible from other instances even after we go offline.
  • Alternatively, if you want to delete your lemm.ee profile, now is the best time to do it, so the deletion can federate out before we go offline.
  • If you're one of the folks supporting us with a recurring donation, please remember to cancel it (Ko-Fi donations should have been cancelled automatically already). Our leftover funds are already enough to cover our bills for next month, so we can keep things running without any more support.

Because of how Lemmy is built, everything posted on lemm.ee will still be accessible from other instances, even after we go offline.

Why this is happening


The key reason is that we just don’t have enough people on the admin team to keep the place running. Most of the admin team has stepped down, mostly due to burnout, and finding replacements hasn’t worked out.

The sad reality is that while there are a lot of great people on Lemmy, there are also some who use the platform to attack others, stir up conflict, or actively try to undermine the project. Admins are volunteers who deal with the latter group on a constant basis, this takes a mental toll. Please understand why our admins chose to step down, and be kind to the admins on whatever instance you decide to join.

We know this sucks. We're genuinely sorry it’s ending like this. Thank you to everyone who spent time here and helped make it better.

“archive.today” sends user data to Russia

A translation of this article with a few (minor additions). I could not find an English-language article. The original article has informative illustrations.

“Archive.Today” is a popular website for access to paid media content. Well-known domain names for the website are archive.is and archive.ph (and archive.md).

What many users do not know: The website provides users' data to Russia.

The data goes to Mail.ru and thus to the Russian Internet company VK. A look at the website with Webbkoll shows the following Russian domain names:

  • privacy-cs.mail.ru
  • r.mradx.net
  • rs.mail.ru
  • top-fwz1.mail.ru

First and foremost, top-fwz1.mail.ru/js/code.js is integrated. Further code from Russia is then loaded.

The following applies to Russian Internet companies:

“Russia demands unconditional cooperation and extensive control options from its flourishing IT economy. It is not just about the full possession of the largest social network (VK) and the largest payment service (Mail.ru), but in the case of Yandex also to influence the entire output of Yandex News.


The data collected show which Paywall content is particularly popular in western media, but could also provide insight about their users. One can speculate about the importance of such data in the hybrid Russian war against Europe and the rest of the West.

Incidentally (and in addition), anyone who pays for the paid media content must also expect for user data to go to Russia:

A (more) reputable alternative is the Internet Archive at Archive.org, best known for the archiving of websites at web.archive.org.

Please never take any of my bitching about Doctor Who to be directed towards Ncuti Gatwa.

Ncuti was brilliantly cast, and my only problem is that I don't think he was given the material or direction needed to create an epic version of the Doctor. I love his energy, I just wish his version of the character was given substance too.

Casting Ncuti is probably the one creative decision they made that I think was 100% unambiguously a good one. And yet he's already gone!

Ncuti Gatwa's 15th Doctor is one of the biggest missed opportunities in Who history ("Whostory"?).

i believe its pretty customary for pigs to have little club patches in a desperate attempt to fulfill the hole in their lives left by a lack of healthy community. you're not going to identify the official agency via the patch, unless you find someone who knows about the little group.

@benda yes, I've found some with the Viking skull but usually with a hammer and axe. I'm trying to figure out the symbols crossed behind the skull. They don't match the typical Nazi Norse runes.

Could be a random "thought it looked cool" design though.

Parmi les livres consacrés à la France Insoumise (LFI), La meute de Charlotte Belaïch et Olivier Pérou se distingue par son succès éditorial et sa visibilité médiatique. Présenté comme une « enquête » sur le fonctionnement interne du mouvement créé par Jean-Luc Mélenchon, l’ouvrage prétend « révéler » les violences symboliques, les dérives autoritaires et l’ambiance de courtisanerie qui régneraient dans les cercles dirigeants de LFI. Ce livre s’inscrit dans une longue tradition de récits journalistiques centrés sur les « coulisses » des partis et de la lutte pour le pouvoir.

Mais La meute est aussi un révélateur des limites structurelles du journalisme politique. En procédant à une analyse comparée avec une enquête sociologique que j’ai conduite entre 2018 et 2020 (Le populisme de gauche, La Découverte, 2021), je voudrais interroger ce que voit, ce qu’occulte et ce que fabrique ce type de production journalistique. À travers cette critique, il ne s’agit pas d’opposer les vertus de la science à la superficialité supposée du journalisme. Il s’agit de comprendre les conditions sociales de production de chaque régime de savoir, et les effets d’objectivation – ou de distorsion – qui en découlent.

La critique que je propose ici se déploiera en cinq temps. Je reviendrai d’abord sur la personnalisation de l’analyse, La meute réduisant trop souvent la dynamique d’un mouvement collectif à la psychologie d’un seul homme. Je montrerai ensuite comment le livre produit une vision caricaturale du militantisme. J’examinerai en troisième lieu le traitement différentiel dont LFI est l’objet, à travers l’illusion d’exceptionnalité que construisent les auteurs. Je consacrerai un quatrième moment à l’analyse des routines journalistiques et de leurs effets de vision, avant de conclure sur les différents régimes d’intelligibilité politique qui animent le journalisme et la sociologie.
La fascination-répulsion pour le leader

Le livre de Charlotte Belaïch et Olivier Pérou porte pour sous-titre « Enquête sur la France insoumise de Jean-Luc Mélenchon ». L’introduction de mon livre s’intitule « La France insoumise au-delà de son leader ». Deux perspectives se font face : réduire une dynamique collective aux tourments psychologiques de son leader (« pour comprendre LFI, il faut disséquer l’homme » et « faire l’exégèse de ses frustrations ») vs examiner ce que les conditions sociales font aux pratiques politiques d’un individu et sur ce que ces pratiques disent de notre société.

La dimension la plus saillante de La meute est la centralité absolue accordée à Jean-Luc Mélenchon. Dès les premières pages, l’ancien candidat à la présidentielle est décrit comme une figure à la fois charismatique et destructrice, adulée et redoutée, omniprésente et insaisissable. Les auteurs mobilisent un lexique quasi-psychanalytique : ils parlent de ses colères, de ses dépressions supposées, de ses complexes, de sa mégalomanie latente. On lit par exemple que Mélenchon est capable « d’humilier » ses plus proches dans un silence « glacial », qu’il se vit en « prophète », ou encore qu’il préfère « la soumission » à la contradiction ».

Ce type de portrait produit une anthropologie morale de la politique : les propriétés sociales des agents sont remplacées par des traits de caractère, les logiques structurelles sont réduites à des tempéraments et les conflits politiques sont reconfigurés comme des histoires de fidélité ou de trahison. Il en résulte un effet de subjectivisation : la politique est ramenée à un théâtre d’ombres peuplé de personnages emblématiques. La logique des institutions, des règles, des ressources militantes disparaît.

Dans cette perspective, le mouvement devient l’ombre portée de son fondateur. Toute dynamique organisationnelle est rapportée au psychisme d’un seul homme. Le récit produit ainsi une illusion de causalité descendante : c’est parce que Mélenchon est colérique que les cadres partent ; c’est parce qu’il est mégalomane que les listes sont verrouillées ; c’est parce qu’il est paranoïaque que les conflits internes s’exacerbent. Une telle lecture ignore les médiations, les épreuves, les négociations, les inerties, bref tout ce qui fait la réalité complexe d’une organisation politique.

Dans Le populisme de gauche, j’avais tenté de procéder autrement. Plutôt que d’expliquer les tensions internes par les traits d’un leader, j’avais objectivé les effets de structure liés à un modèle organisationnel mouvementiste, à une arène politique présidentialisée et à un champ médiatique guidé par l’audimat : une verticalité assumée, une absence de démocratie interne, une relation ambivalente aux médias, une mise en scène de la conflictualité. Ces éléments ne sont pas les produits de l’humeur d’un homme : ils sont le résultat d’un ensemble de choix stratégiques opérés sous une série de contraintes institutionnelles et de circonstances historiques.
Une vision caricaturale du militantisme

L’un des effets les plus délétères de La meute réside dans sa représentation du militantisme comme une forme de servitude volontaire et implacable. À de nombreuses reprises, les auteurs décrivent les membres de LFI comme des exécutants dociles, insensibles à la violence qu’ils subissent et/ou qu’ils exercent, prompts à obéir au chef, incapables de distance critique. On prétend que les insoumis répètent les éléments de langage sans broncher, qu’ils acceptent tout, par fidélité ou par crainte, et qu’ils se battent pour défendre leur gourou, même quand ils savent qu’il a tort.

Cette vision relève d’un schéma que la sociologie du militantisme ne peut confirmer : celui d’un militant « aliéné », soumis aux caprices du chef, incapable de recul. Les données ethnographiques dont je dispose contredisent cette hypothèse. Les militants que j’ai interrogés – à Paris, Marseille, Amiens, Lyon ou Toulouse – sont loin d’être dupes des limites de leur organisation. Ils identifient souvent les manques de démocratie, la centralisation du pouvoir, les pratiques autoritaires. Mais ils en font une lecture stratégique : ces défauts sont perçus comme des effets de contexte, des contreparties d’une efficacité électorale, ou les symptômes d’un passage encore inachevé vers une forme organisationnelle plus démocratique.

Les militant·es ne sont pas les objets passifs d’une entreprise de captation du consentement. Ils sont des acteurs sociaux dotés d’un sens pratique, capables d’adopter une posture distanciée, de formuler des critiques internes, voire de transgresser les injonctions venues d’en haut. Il n’est pas rare de voir des militants insoumis réécrire les tracts, réinterpréter les consignes nationales, détourner les slogans ou négocier avec les logiques locales. Autrement dit, ils bricolent leur engagement.

Charlotte Belaïch et Olivier Pérou présentent les militant·es insoumis comme des « pions » que le leader déplacerait et manipulerait à sa guise. Je ne souhaite pas tordre le bâton dans l’autre sens. LFI, c’est vrai, est une organisation qui dépossède les militants au profit du leader et des sympathisants. J’y ai consacré un chapitre entier de mon livre. Mais cette dépossession n’est pas la soumission grégaire d’une « meute » à son « mâle alpha ». La question intéressante – politiquement, intellectuellement – à poser est de comprendre comment et pourquoi des militants acceptent de jouer un jeu qu’ils peuvent par ailleurs critiquer. La meute empêche de poser cette question.
L’illusion d’exceptionnalité

Un troisième travers de La meute est sa tendance à présenter comme spécifiques à La France Insoumise des phénomènes qui relèvent, en réalité, de dynamiques structurelles propres à l’ensemble des partis contemporains. Les violences sexistes et sexuelles, les stratégies d’invisibilisation des dissidents, les tensions entre appareils et bases, l’abaissement du coût d’entrée dans les partis politiques, le développement de l’activisme numérique, les conflits autour des investitures ou la personnalisation du pouvoir ne sont pas des anomalies propres à LFI. Ces phénomènes traversent le champ partisan dans son ensemble, qu’il s’agisse du Parti socialiste, d’Europe Écologie – Les Verts, de Renaissance ou du Rassemblement national.

Or les auteurs de La meute postulent dès leur avant-propos que « LFI n’est pas un parti comme les autres ». Une telle affirmation, dénuée de fondement comparatif, participe d’un traitement différentiel qui tend à construire une image d’exceptionnalité négative. La France insoumise serait pire que ses rivaux. Ce faisant, La meute occulte la généralité des transformations du champ politique : la présidentialisation des partis, la perte de pouvoir des militants, la gestion managériale des campagnes, la prégnance d’une culture patriarcale et d’une division genrée du travail militant, etc.

Il y a là un effet de grossissement propre au regard journalistique : faute de pouvoir historiciser les phénomènes, les journalistes sur-interprètent leur nouveauté. Faute de pouvoir les comparer, ils les absolutisent. Cette illusion d’exceptionnalité permet de nourrir une dramaturgie éditoriale : LFI serait le théâtre d’un effondrement moral et d’une dérive sectaire. Or, si l’on replace les faits dans une perspective sociohistorique, on voit apparaître des régularités. La centralisation des décisions, par exemple, est renforcée dans tous les partis lors des campagnes présidentielles ; les mises à l’écart sont monnaie courante dans les partis à fort leader ; les conflits idéologiques se rejouent fréquemment sous la forme de conflits personnels. Ainsi, La meute pèche par absence de mise en contexte. Elle transforme en symptômes d’une dérive ce qui relève d’une logique plus générale du champ politique.

Il existe bien sûr des différences entre LFI et les autres partis. Étudier ces différences, comprendre leur genèse et examiner leurs effets était au cœur du livre que j’ai produit il y a quatre ans. Dans La meute, ces différences sont absolutisées et essentialisées, ce qui empêche ainsi les auteurs d’effectuer la moindre comparaison avec d’autres partis. Aux yeux des auteurs, LFI n’est pas seulement différent de ses rivaux, il est « incomparable ». Le fonctionnement du PS, de Renaissance, de LR ou du RN n’est donc jamais évoqué dans le livre. Pas de sociologie sans comparaison, disait Durkheim. Le journalisme politique, lui, ne s’encombre pas d’un tel scrupule.
Sur quelques contraintes et routines journalistiques

Il serait injuste d’attribuer aux seuls auteurs de La meute les biais observés dans leur ouvrage. Ceux-ci tiennent largement aux routines professionnelles du journalisme politique, et à la configuration du champ médiatique dans lequel il s’insère. Enquêter sur un mouvement politique, dans le cadre d’un journal de presse écrite, impose un certain nombre de contraintes : travailler dans l’urgence, répondre à l’attente d’un lectorat informé mais impatient, produire du récit plutôt que de l’analyse, mettre en avant les personnes plus que les structures.

Entre 2018 et 2020, pendant que je menais mon enquête sur LFI, j’ai également mené une sous-enquête sur les journalistes responsables de la « gauche » au sein du Monde, de Libération, du Figaro, du Parisien, de Mediapart, du Nouvel obs et de quelques autres. Je les ai rencontrés et longuement interrogés sur leurs parcours de vie, leur métier, leurs conditions de travail, leurs sociabilités, leurs opinions politiques. Tous mes interlocuteurs ont évoqué les contraintes susmentionnées. Ils décrivent un univers professionnel marqué par la concurrence entre rédactions, la pression des rédacteurs en chef, la rareté du temps d’enquête, l’ambiguïté des relations avec les sources, la nécessité de rendre les dissensions visibles pour que le politique « fasse événement ».

Cette configuration engendre un double effet de vision. D’une part, elle produit un biais de survisibilité des dirigeants, au détriment des militants ordinaires. D’autre part, elle valorise les récits de rupture, les conversions spectaculaires, les défections dramatisées, au détriment des continuités souterraines, des pratiques ordinaires, des ajustements quotidiens. Loin d’être spécifiques à La meute, ces biais sont inhérents au journalisme politique. Ils expliquent pourquoi la sociologie, quand elle se donne le temps de l’enquête, produit une image du politique souvent à rebours de celle des médias : plus lente, plus nuancée, moins spectaculaire, mais aussi plus fidèle à la complexité du réel.
Deux régimes d’intelligibilité de la politique

Au terme de cette critique, il ne s’agit pas de récuser en bloc l’intérêt de La meute. L’ouvrage livre des informations utiles, donne à entendre des voix critiques, documente des faits que les instances dirigeantes de LFI auraient tort de minimiser. Mais il faut lire La meute pour ce qu’il est : un produit du champ journalistique, obéissant à ses logiques propres, qui limitent la portée de l’enquête.

Ce que montre en creux la confrontation de ce livre avec une enquête sociologique, c’est la nécessité de penser LFI non comme une énigme psychologique, ni comme une dérive sectaire, mais comme une forme partisane spécifique, située historiquement, et travaillée par des tensions internes. Il faut replacer LFI dans l’histoire longue des gauches radicales, de leurs rapports au pouvoir, à l’État, aux médias, aux intellectuels. Il faut restituer la complexité des configurations militantes, les désaccords internes, les trajectoires sociales différenciées des cadres et des militant·es. Il faut, enfin, s’interroger sur ce que LFI fait aux dispositifs classiques de la représentation politique, et sur ce qu’elle révèle, par contraste, du dépérissement des partis traditionnels.

À cette fin, la sociologie ne prétend pas dire le vrai contre le faux. Elle cherche à construire des objets, à articuler des registres d’analyse, à restituer les contradictions plutôt qu’à les trancher. Elle n’a ni l’immédiateté du reportage, ni la flamboyance du portrait. Mais elle a, parfois, le pouvoir de faire apparaître ce que le regard médiatique ne perçoit pas, ou ne peut pas percevoir. C’est dans cet écart – entre ce que le journalisme politique raconte, et ce que la sociologie peut faire apparaître – que se joue, aujourd’hui, une part essentielle de notre compréhension du politique.

La comparaison entre La meute et Le populisme de gauche dépasse le cas particulier de La France Insoumise. Il s’agit de deux manières d’enquêter sur le politique, de deux régimes de vérité, portés par des univers professionnels différents. La divergence la plus visible tient à la temporalité. Là où le journalisme travaille sous contrainte d’urgence, avec une logique de révélation, la sociologie s’inscrit dans la longue durée et dans une logique de compréhension. Le premier privilégie les épisodes spectaculaires, les crises les conflits interpersonnels ; la seconde s’attache aux processus, aux bifurcations, aux trajectoires, aux routines. Le journalisme construit l’événement, la sociologie le réinscrit dans l’histoire.

Une seconde divergence concerne le statut des sources. Dans La meute, les témoignages – souvent anonymes – sont présentés comme des faits bruts, porteurs d’une vérité auto-évidente. En sociologie, les entretiens sont des matériaux à interpréter, replacés dans un contexte, croisés avec d’autres données, analysés à partir d’un cadre théorique. La vérité n’est jamais immédiate ; elle est à construire dans un va-et-vient permanent entre matériaux empiriques, réflexions théoriques et comparaison chrono-historiques.

Troisièmement, les deux approches se distinguent par leur degré de réflexivité. Les journalistes s’effacent généralement derrière le récit, laissant penser qu’ils accèdent à une forme de transparence sur le réel. Le sociologue, lui, explicite sa position, ses choix méthodologiques, ses limites. Il assume que tout regard est situé, et que l’objectivité réside moins dans une neutralité proclamée que dans une réflexivité assumée.

Vient ensuite la question du régime de preuve. Le journalisme repose sur l’effet de révélation : une citation, une scène, un témoignage valent comme preuve. La sociologie travaille sur des configurations, des régularités, des effets de structure. Elle ne cherche pas à révéler, mais à expliquer. Là où le journalisme met en avant le spectaculaire, la sociologie construit du général à partir de cas empiriques singuliers.

Enfin, les deux démarches n’ont pas la même finalité. La meute cherche à alerter, à dénoncer, à disqualifier. Mon enquête sociologique poursuivait un autre horizon : rendre intelligibles les logiques à l’œuvre dans un mouvement politique, en restituant ses tensions, ses contradictions et ses ambivalences. Elle ne disculpe ni n’accable, mais cherche à comprendre. La meute et Le populisme de gauche convergent sur de nombreux constats. Mais la posture des auteurs est différente. La meute dit à ses lecteurs qu’il faut faire barrage à La France Insoumise. Le populisme de gauche leur dit qu’ils sont suffisamment intelligents pour se faire leur propre avis.
