Probably everyone that is interested in the Linux desktop has heard about Wayland. It's the next big thing, the replacement for X.org, a solution to a lot of woes in terms of performance and graphics on Linux. And still, it has failed to materialize, over and over, and is still not the default on many big distributions, like Ubuntu, or Linux Mint. Let's see what Wayland is, and how ready it is, right after this!

Wayland is, in itself, just a protocol. It's not a program, or a replacement for the old X.org display server. This protocol has to be implemented by a compositor, which will display the application's content on the user's screen.
Currently, a lot of distributions use X.org, the very old display server that has served us pretty well for ages. The goal of wayland is to put this old beast to pasture, but for what benefits ?
First, let's take a look at how X.org works. This old thing, dating back to 1987, the blessed year of my birth, by the way, is a multi-layered process: First, you have your display server, or the X server. It's the central platform to communicate with the clients, like the applications you're using, and the compositor, which displays the windows for these apps themselves. This server is interacting with clients, which are basically your applications, but also with a compositor, which is your window manager, like Kwin on KDE, or Mutter on GNOME.
It's a sturdy process, but it introduces a lot of delay, with some back and forth betwen the server, the compositor, and the application itself.
Wayland has a simpler model, because in Wayland, the compositor IS the server as well. This means that, in our example, the application opens, tells the compositor that it wants a window, and the compositor gets all the details from the app in one go, decides what to do with the window, and tells the app to draw itself. Yep, on Wayland, the applications also have to do their own rendering on the screen: they manage their own titlebars, their own drop shadows, everything.
This is why you can't just switch GNOME or KDE from X.org to Wayland: the pieces that compose the desktop environment don't play the exact same role on both solutions. On Wayland, the compositor doesn't draw the windows, the app themselves do, so you have to update the window managers to become compositors that don't do any drawing, and you have to update the toolkits, GTK and Qt, to let them draw stuff themselves.
Then there's the issue of the graphics drivers: the Nvidia drivers, the open source AMD or Intel drivers, these were written to send information back and forth with X.org, not with a wayland compositor.
So they also have to be updated to work with that new model. This is already the case, as the open source Mesa drivers, which cover AMD and Intel, already support wayland using a solution called GBM. Nvidia, on the other hand, decided that they had a more efficient solution called EGL, which has to be supported separately by the wayland compositors.
Since Nvidia doesn't seem to be willing to update their driver to use GBM, for nvidia drivers to work with wayland, desktop environments have to also support EGL, which is an extra burden, and also explains why Nvidia drivers are hit or miss when using Wayland.
So, where is Wayland? Well, it's already very well supported: - GNOME supports Wayland, with Mutter, its window manager and compositor - KDE supports Wayland as well, with Kwin - Both GTK 3.20 and QT 5 support wayland out of the box
In terms of distros, Fedora already uses Wayland as the default, if the drivers permit it, and has been since 2016. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 also uses Wayland as the default, and Debian does so as well, for their GNOME sessions. Manjaro also defaults to wayland for the GNOME sessions, if the drivers allow it.
Some programs that were made specifically to work with X.org don't work on wayland-based systems, especially games.
For that use case, Wayland developers have a solution: as wine or proton expects to run in an X Server, Wayland provides the ability to run such a server inside of Wayland, as a client, this is called Xwayland.
The performance of Xwayland, however, seems on par with just running a game on X.org, as demonstrated by Phoronix early this year:

A couple of things about these claims circulating that the 2024 election was "rigged":
1. The supposed "proof" is essentially the same nonsensical statistical gobbledygook that the MAGA people were claiming about 2020, with the parties reversed.
2. There is no legal mechanism to "recount" an election after the results are certified. None. The ship has sailed.
3. SHOCKINGLY, they need funds to continue their "work"
4. Nope, not linking to it. Not giving them oxygen.
An important difference between this and the 2020 fraud claims is that here, you don't see the supposedly "defrauded" candidate amplifying the BS. Harris wants no part of this.

- the supposed "smoking guns" indicating fraud in 2024, like those put forward in 2020, aren't really anything.
- elections are ultimately human endeavors, run by fallible people, and small but inconsequential "irregularities" are normal and expected. But it's often very easy to make them seem much more sinister and significant than they are.
- versions of almost everything claimed about 2024 were claimed by the MAGA people in 2020.

@DrChris ⚔️ It is not unrelated, China retaliates against tariffs placed on it in part because of fentynal manufacturer and importation into the US, by buying oil from Iran and so there is a financial interest to cut-off that source. The trade imbalance certainly impacts our financial well being and hence the affordability of housing and everything else. So yes there is a relationship there. The truth of the matter EVERYTHING and EVERYONE are inter-related to some degree.

it is supposed to help with sleep. If you can reduce or eliminate artificial light sources it is good for keeping your circadian rhythm in line. If you need to have light on, red has the least effect.
Also, on the other side, you are supposed to get natural sunlight as close as you can to when you wake up.
@DrFell this isn't that kind of red light, but I know what you are talking about. This is just regular red light bulbs to stimulate your eyes less at night.
I can recommend the breathwork stuff. Just doing 4:4:4:4 'box breathing' usually puts me to the edge of sleep at night.
@Richard On a side note, while not a big fan of this blue light / red light stuff, I don't use nightshade on my monitor because I'd rather have good color rendition. That said why do LED bulbs produce no red? Deep red phosphors are expensive, but direct RED LEDs are not, so why don't they just include some native red leds in the bulb to provide a more balanced color rendition?

You see a bolt of lightning strike a tree and it happens within 1 millionth of a second. When you get struck, that lasts for several minutes. Immediately your brain tells you to just drop to the floor. You can’t. You don’t even have the time to turn your body off and hit the ground. Time doesn’t exist anymore.

Sorry, this is going to come across as a newbie rant... mostly because I just switched a few months ago. I'm not completely unfamiliar with Linux. I had to use Unix in college for some projects. I've dual-booted with Windows before. I use a Mac at work. I'm reasonably comfortable in the console, though I'm certainly no expert. I feel like what I'm about to talk about shouldn't be so confusing/unintuitive.
I'm running Kubuntu on an older laptop. I have a burnable DVD disc that may or may not be blank. The disc is old, scratched, and unlabeled, but I would like to see if anything is on it.
I press the eject button on my laptop's disc drive. The tray comes out. I insert the disc and close the tray. The system gets busy trying to read the disc, but eventually stops spinning. Nothing pops up. Dolphin doesn't show my disc drive in the "Devices" panel, or that there's anything in the drive. VLC says it can't read the disc.
Ok, fine. The disc is probably either empty, or it's too scratched to read and needs to be trashed, so I would like to remove it from my system. I push the eject button again, and... nothing happens. It's the same button I used to open the tray to insert the disc, but now it's unresponsive. I open Dolphin and confirm that it doesn't show that I even have a disc drive in the "Devices" panel (presumably because nothing's in it). I open the "Discs and Devices" section in the Notification tray, and the most I can get it to show is my hard drive. It's like my computer doesn't believe the DVD drive exists.
So, what do I have to do? I can open MakeMKV, and it has an Eject button that opens the tray. I'm sure plenty of other software has similar functionality. I can also open the terminal and type "eject", and the tray pops right open. Clearly, my system knows that there's a DVD drive, and it has the ability to open the tray.
Why doesn't the eject button work? Why doesn't Dolphin just always show the DVD drive? Why do I have to google "How to eject a dvd kubuntu"? What am I missing?
Most drives have an emergency eject function built in, totally independent of the operating system. Some work differently than others, but try something along these lines..
Hold the eject button for 5 to 10 seconds
Then tap the eject button multiple times
Usually works for me.
Edit: Most drives also have an emergency eject hole near the eject button, just push a straightened paperclip in when the drive is powered off and it should eject.
I did try holding the eject button for up to 15 seconds when I first noticed this issue, but that was ineffecive. I just tried it again so that I could try tapping the eject button afterward, but it didn't work, either.
I used the paperclip in the past. That works because it's mechanical.
It's been a little hit/miss for me at times as well, I totally feel your frustration when dealing with scratched discs. Still, at least with my drives, spamming the eject button seems to eventually work.

I absolutely love spicy food, and it's never affected my gut. I was actually confused when I read about people getting the shits after a curry and wondered if it was a joke. I've had curries so hot it caused people to recoil into a coughing and sweating fit after they dipped their finger in and had a taste and I have one every other day. I feel the burning in my mouth, my face turns red, my forehead sweats, my esophagus feels weird, but (tmi I know lol) when I go to the toilet I'm completely fine. no gut pains either.

Instead of foo, bar and baz, use “genderqueer”, “demisexual” and “leather_daddy” and you’ll reduce the likelihood of getting a spammy PR from a sad robot.

I'm talking about games that you still like but you had no idea were criticized so much.
The perfect example for me is Sonic Unleashed.
I admit that the game has its bad things, but I would have never imagined that it was so hated at the time... Although, that could be extended to the entire Sonic franchise, since for many years I was not aware at all of that "Sonic was never good", "Sonic had a rough transition to 3D" nonsense.
Mine was final fantasy 12. I played that game so hard, really enjoyed it and if was released in the time of trophies I would have platinumed it. Even did the grinding for Gilgamesh to spawn for a sword or something. But I was hated at the time.
Now everyone is saying it was one of the best and I was proved right all along.
Sure the story was star wars and the main character wasn't, but the combat system was really fun, way better than 13.
