KDE Plasma Mobile — The Dev Log: April 2024 - June 2025

This blog post is already quite long, so it will omit changes merged for Plasma 6.5 (releasing in October, to be announced in a future post).

With the Plasma 6.2 release, we moved Plasma Dialer and Spacebar to the Plasma release cycle, allowing us to have consistent releases of the two apps. This completes our year long move to having all Plasma Mobile related projects released as part of wider KDE releases, streamlining the work for distributions and taking a load off us on having to maintain a separate release cycle!

In other news, a Fedora spin for Plasma Mobile was released! It will only be targeting devices that can currently boot Fedora (i.e. not ARM phones), but is very exciting nonetheless!

Last time i tried plasma mobile it was unbearably slow (even slower then the normal unbearably slow) so i switched to phosh, but I would like to try it again so let's see if these updates made it any more usable.

UPDATE: Honestly i'm impressed, it might be because currently im not running waydroid beside it like i did on my previous Phosh install but it feels very responsive. With the angelfish browser providing a way better experience then firefox. The battery life is still very bad but outside that this could be used as a regular phone.

Converting Wood Residues into Clean-Burning Charcoal

Sawmills, furniture plants, and forestry operations generate vast volumes of wood residues—offcuts, shavings, bark, and dust—that are often underutilized or disposed through open burning. Converting this biomass into high-quality charcoal through thermochemical treatment addresses both waste management and energy transition objectives. Deploying a modern charcoal machine enables controlled carbonization, producing clean, energy-dense solid fuel suitable for industrial and household use.

Feedstock Characteristics and Suitability


Hardwood residues—such as oak, beech, or acacia—are ideal for charcoal production due to their dense lignin structure and low ash content. Softwoods, while abundant, tend to produce lower fixed carbon and more volatile byproducts. Mixed sawdust can also be used but often requires densification through briquetting to maintain consistent feed into a continuous reactor.

Moisture content is critical. Wood waste above 15% moisture reduces thermal efficiency and increases condensate volume. Pre-drying, either through solar racks or low-temperature belt dryers utilizing waste heat from the wood charcoal making machine, ensures optimal pyrolysis conditions.

Controlled Pyrolysis for Clean Combustion


Traditional kilns emit smoke, tar, and particulates, contributing to local pollution. In contrast, modern woody biomass pyrolysis plant systems use indirect heating to initiate pyrolysis under oxygen-limited conditions. This process converts wood biomass into fixed carbon while releasing volatiles that are either condensed or combusted in a secondary chamber.

Operating temperatures between 450–600 °C produce high-grade lump or granular charcoal with carbon content above 75%, minimal ash, and low sulfur emissions. The enclosed system architecture ensures complete gas capture, allowing for the production of clean-burning charcoal without atmospheric contamination.

Gas and Energy Recovery


During pyrolysis, wood volatiles—including methane, carbon monoxide, and light tars—are released. These gases can be routed back into the heating system of the charcoal machine, reducing external fuel input by up to 80%. Excess thermal energy may also be harvested for pre-drying wood feedstock, powering steam turbines, or generating process heat for adjacent industrial units.

This closed-loop approach minimizes the plant’s carbon footprint and improves the overall energy balance of the facility.

Emission Control and Environmental Compliance


Advanced units include gas scrubbers, electrostatic precipitators, and thermal oxidizers to treat off-gases before atmospheric release. This ensures compliance with tightening emissions regulations in regions such as the European Union or Southeast Asia.

Additionally, integrating baghouse filters to capture particulates during feed handling and post-processing minimizes workplace exposure and environmental discharge.

End Product Applications


Charcoal derived from wood waste has a wide range of applications:

  • Industrial fuel: Used in metallurgy, ceramics, and lime kilns due to its high calorific value (\~7,000 kcal/kg) and low ash.
  • BBQ and household heating: When shaped into briquettes or lump form, the clean burn profile and low smoke output make it suitable for residential use.
  • Activated carbon precursor: Hardwood charcoal with high porosity can be further processed into activated carbon for filtration and purification industries.
  • Soil amendment: Fine charcoal powder serves as biochar, improving soil water retention and nutrient cycling.

By tailoring process parameters—such as heating rate, residence time, and final temperature—the charcoal machine can be optimized to produce targeted carbon products for specific markets.

Economic and Operational Considerations


A mid-scale charcoal machine plant processing 2–3 tons of dry wood waste per hour typically requires 300–500 kWh of auxiliary power and operates with minimal manual intervention. Maintenance focuses on refractory integrity, rotary seal condition, and heat exchanger cleaning. Return on investment is driven by feedstock availability, proximity to end-use markets, and potential carbon offset revenues.

In many forestry regions, such conversion plants qualify for green financing or government incentives under circular economy and biomass valorization programs.

Transforming wood processing waste into clean charcoal not only diverts biomass from waste streams but also supplies a renewable energy source aligned with environmental and economic imperatives. Through efficient use of a charcoal machine and integrated process design, this approach establishes a sustainable model for decarbonized fuel production from industrial wood residues.

Half the problem with autism and adhd both is difficulty with habit formation and maintenance.

You don’t need habits. You need routines with reliable contextual triggers. They’ll fail from time to time and you will just have to be okay with that, and try to figure out exactly what made them fail when they do so maybe you can fix it going forward. But it will still occasionally fail.

You can’t make a sieve not leak without making it not a sieve.

Triggers are the real key. Like needing to use the bathroom in the morning. Then hang a habit of taking meds right after. You have to look at the habits you already have, and connect new things to that.
You can also build new habits, but if they are forced, they won't have a high success rate. I built a habit of looking back into a space I am walking out of when not in my home. I built it on the anxiety of forgetting something. So it stuck. I try to build a habit of letting others talk, but it has no trigger, so it hasn't stuck.

First, X.org will be even more abandoned. I'm not saying every distro will drop it entirely, but I'm expecting way more distributions and desktops to announce in 2024, that X.org won't be a supported platform anymore in 2025, or at the very least won't be the default session.

I would be surprised if, in 2024, Ubuntu didn't announce something similar for the following year.

The second thing I think we'll see is a fully open source stack for nvidia being available for Linux users. With the Linux kernel 6.7 bringing support for the GSP firmware, letting Nvidia GPUs be reclocked by the open source Nouveau drivers, and NVK now part of Mesa, and providing decent performance already, I'd say 2024 will be the year where Nvidia users can finally enjoy a good experience on Linux without anything extra to install.

In terms of market share, we've seen some healthy growth in 2023, ending the year on a potentially anomalous 3.8%, the highest the Linux desktop has ever been. In 2024, I'd expect this trend to continue: people don't seem to enjoy WIndows 11 that much, and they already didn't enjoy Windows 10 all that much either, and with Microsoft cramming more and more ads in their OS, and potentially moving to a subscription based model for Windows 12, I'd expect more people to give Linux a go, and mathematically, some of them will stick with it.

All in all, I don't think we'll jump to something like 8 or 10%, but I'd be surprised if the Linux desktop didn't reach 5 or 6% on its own, and about 10% combined with Chrome OS.

I would also expect 2024 to see a standalone release of SteamOS for any computer, and I'd say our market share will probably rise to about 3, maybe 3 and a half percent, but it won't be a major change, and the situation in terms of how many games we can play will be relatively stable, with major names still missing.

Now let's talk about the things I feel will stay exactly the same in 2024: starting with packaging formats. What we might see is more distros deciding to provide specific apps using the official snap or flatpak, like RHEL is doing with LibreOffice, because for some apps, it simply makes no sense to repackage them all the time, but that won't change the status quo.

Same thing for what we generally call Immutable distributions. I don't think they'll gain that much popularity in 2024, because they're often linked to using either flatpak or snap, or Nix packages, can't forget about Nix or I'll get comments again, and since we're not making these formats the only choice any time soon, I don't think this group of Linux distros will conquer the general Linux desktop audience either.

As per app support, that's another area where I feel we're not going to see much progress. And I'm talking big name apps, like Office, the Adobe Suite, Autocad, and the like. Even if my predictions for Linux market share come true, the potential revenue from supporting Linux is still low and will still be low, compared to the effort of porting the app, finding a packaging format that allows you to do everything you want, and then supporting that version.

Then I make a new "Unsorted-NEW" and put the clutter in it. Which I'm totally going to sort and not just leave there and forget about it until everything's too cluttered again...

Refurbishing an Old Lava Lamp

Just got through replacing the power cord and switch on an old lava lamp while keeping the appearance, other than the cord color, identical. The original cord was brown, the new one is white, but otherwise identical.

I got this so long ago probably 40-45 years ago and I just recently pulled it out of storage and added it to my office decor, add a little red light which the LED bulbs do not produce, and some motion.

The switch had become intermittent and since it was integral to the cord, fixing it really required replacing the whole thing, but this was challenging. First there was a cardboard with felt disk on the bottom I had to remove, it was glued on but careful work with a pocket knife released it intact. Then the socket was held to the bottom with a nut but you could not remove the bottom plate as it was spot welded to the base, so the only way for the socket to come out was through the opening for the bulb and given this was only about 1/32nd of an inch larger than the socket itself this was no fun.

Reinserting the socket back into the hole in the base was tricky since it's basically a blind operation but after much futzing finally got lucky and got it through and put the nut back on.

The cord was mounted in the base with a heyco, but I managed to compress with vice grips and remove intact and use with the new cord.

All in all it was a challenging operation. Now I just have to wait for the glue on the felt pad on the base to dry and it will be as good as new.

I was worried about being able to get bulbs since most incandescents are outlawed, but there is an exception for oven bulbs and that happens to be what this uses. So $6 got me a two pack from Amazon.

What's is it with WhatsApp ?
I recently agreed to take part in a local representative group.
We were informed of the meeting by email.
We had just started our face to face meeting and someone said.
"Let's set up a WhatsApp group ".
It seems to me everyone and their granny is in a bloody WhatsApp group.
WHY ?
I feel as if I am being dragged screaming and kicking into yet another....

Now I read that WhatsApp will start delivering adverts at the end of the month.

Very resonable (imo) response from Gargron (lead developer of Mastodon):

I’ve forwarded your question to our legal help and will provide an answer as soon as they give it to me. What you must understand is that our lawyers don’t have experience with federated platforms, and we don’t have experience with law, so we meet somewhere in the middle. Meta presumably has an in-house legal team that can really embed themselves in the problem area; our lawyers are external and pro-bono and rely on us to correctly explain the requirements and community feedback. The draft has been around for something like a year and none of the community members pointed out this issue until now. I’ll add one thing:
"My assumption, {.. shortened for brevity ..} is that when you post content it gets mirrored elsewhere, and this continues until a deletion notice is federated. So I'd assume if an instance somewhere mirrors my content they can't get in trouble for it, and I'd also assume that if there is a deletion or maybe a block and a reasonable interpretation of the protocol would say that the content should be removed, I could send them a takedown and at that point they'd have to honor it."

The goal of the terms is to make assumptions like this explicit, because assumptions are risky both sides. Just because luckily there were no frivolous lawsuits around this so far doesn’t mean there isn’t a risk of one.


Cory has had a much more calm response on a fediverse post, offering to reach out to the EFF's lawyers for assistance in drafting a better ToS for Mastodon, and other experienced lawyers have offered help also. Amongst the usual negativity from some users.

I'll be keeping my eye on the outcome but so far it looks positive.

À la suite d’une vague de lobbying Ă  Washington et de la capitulation des DĂ©mocrates, le SĂ©nat s’apprĂȘte Ă  adopter le GENIUS Act, une loi tentaculaire sur les cryptomonnaies qui pourrait favoriser la propagation de monnaies numĂ©riques instables et propices Ă  la fraude dans l’ensemble du systĂšme bancaire. Toutefois, les lĂ©gislateurs et les experts en protection des consommateurs avertissent que le projet de loi prĂ©sente un problĂšme encore plus grave : il autoriserait Elon Musk et d’autres magnats de la tech Ă  Ă©mettre leurs propres monnaies privĂ©es.

De plus, grĂące Ă  un « compromis » bipartisan qui a convaincu les derniers DĂ©mocrates rĂ©ticents de soutenir le texte, la plus rĂ©cente version du projet de loi pourrait empĂȘcher le principal rĂ©gulateur gouvernemental des secteurs financier et technologique de superviser ces potentielles monnaies numĂ©riques.

Le GENIUS Act [Acronyme de « Guiding and Establishing National Innovation for US Stablecoins », Orienter et promouvoir l’innovation nationale en matiĂšre de stablecoins amĂ©ricains. Le mot genius (gĂ©nie) est un jeu de mots implicite visant Ă  prĂ©senter ce projet de loi comme une idĂ©e brillante. NdT] a Ă©tĂ© conçu pour instaurer une rĂ©gulation minimale des stablecoins, une forme de jeton cryptographique de plus en plus utilisĂ©e, gĂ©nĂ©ralement indexĂ©e sur le dollar amĂ©ricain Ă  valeur Ă©quivalente (un stablecoin peut ĂȘtre Ă©changĂ© contre un dollar).

La sociĂ©tĂ© Tether, basĂ©e au Salvador, est actuellement la plus grande plateforme d’échange de ces devises et a fait l’objet de nombreuses poursuites judiciaires aux États-Unis pour fraude.

AprĂšs que certains DĂ©mocrates favorables aux cryptomonnaies ont temporairement renoncĂ© Ă  soutenir le projet de loi au dĂ©but de ce mois, les RĂ©publicains sont revenus Ă  la table des nĂ©gociations. Ils ont proposĂ© ce qui semblait ĂȘtre quelques modestes concessions, destinĂ©es Ă  apaiser les inquiĂ©tudes des DĂ©mocrates quant Ă  une utilisation frauduleuse des cryptos par Trump Ă  des fins personnelles. Mais une analyse juridique menĂ©e par l’équipe dĂ©mocrate de la commission bancaire du SĂ©nat a dynamitĂ© cette nouvelle version du texte, notamment parce qu’elle permettrait aux gĂ©ants de la tech de crĂ©er leurs propres monnaies, en plus de nombreux autres problĂšmes pointĂ©s du doigt.

Le projet de loi accorde Ă©galement une large dĂ©rogation Ă  X (anciennement Twitter), la plateforme sociale d’Elon Musk, pour l’exempter mĂȘme des restrictions les plus lĂ©gĂšres. Selon l’analyse de la commission bancaire, cette clause revient Ă  « offrir au plus proche alliĂ© Big Tech du PrĂ©sident un avantage concurrentiel pour crĂ©er sa propre monnaie privĂ©e ».

Elon Musk ne serait peut-ĂȘtre pas le seul Ă  profiter de ces avantages. L’administration Trump pourrait Ă©galement accorder des exemptions aux entreprises technologiques de son choix, en les soustrayant aux exigences les plus strictes du projet de loi, selon l’équipe de la commission bancaire du SĂ©nat.

À ces exemptions s’ajoute une nouvelle disposition juridique discrĂštement intĂ©grĂ©e au texte, qui retire tacitement au Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), l’un des principaux rĂ©gulateurs des secteurs financier et technologique, son autoritĂ© pour superviser l’émission des stablecoins. Le CFPB enquĂȘte sur les rĂ©seaux de paiement de Meta et d’autres entreprises technologiques, et a pris des mesures pour les soumettre aux mĂȘmes rĂšgles que les banques.

MalgrĂ© ces inquiĂ©tudes, seize sĂ©nateurs dĂ©mocrates viennent d’approuver le passage du texte rĂ©visĂ© en sĂ©ance plĂ©niĂšre, ce qui rend son adoption par le SĂ©nat quasiment certaine. Seuls deux RĂ©publicains ont votĂ© contre la mesure : Rand Paul, sĂ©nateur du Kentucky, et Jerry Moran, sĂ©nateur du Kansas. Ils s’opposent Ă  toute intervention fĂ©dĂ©rale visant Ă  soutenir les cryptomonnaies et les gĂ©ants de la tech.

Selon les membres dĂ©mocrates de la commission bancaire du SĂ©nat, leurs collĂšgues viennent d’avaliser une logique de clientĂ©lisme politique, prĂ©cisĂ©ment ce qu’ils affirmaient vouloir combattre dans la version initiale du GENIUS Act.

Les gĂ©ants de la tech qui pourraient bĂ©nĂ©ficier de ce projet de loi ont versĂ© des millions de dollars Ă  des candidats-clĂ©s aux siĂšges les plus disputĂ©s lors des derniĂšres Ă©lections. On y compte deux alliĂ©s dĂ©clarĂ©s des cryptomonnaies, Ruben Gallego (DĂ©mocrate, Arizona) et Elissa Slotkin (DĂ©mocrate, Michigan), qui ont chacun reçu 10 millions de dollars de la part de comitĂ©s d’action politique financĂ©s par des intĂ©rĂȘts liĂ©s aux cryptos. Le Protect Progress PAC, branche DĂ©mocrate du lobby crypto en matiĂšre de financement Ă©lectoral, a dĂ©pensĂ© 33 millions de dollars tant pour les primaires que pour les Ă©lections gĂ©nĂ©rales de 2024.

Briser le pare-feu

Officiellement, le GENIUS Act vise Ă  faciliter la tĂąche des entreprises de cryptomonnaies, dont les groupes de lobbying ont fortement militĂ© en faveur du texte. Mais selon Brian Shearer, ancien conseiller principal au CFPB et expert en droit Ă  l’universitĂ© Vanderbilt, ses implications pourraient aller bien au-delĂ , en affectant un large Ă©ventail de secteurs non bancaires.

La formulation du projet de loi remet en cause un principe juridique vieux de deux siĂšcles, qui impose une sĂ©paration entre les banques qui vendent des produits financiers, et les entreprises commerciales qui vendent des biens. Cette sĂ©paration avait Ă©tĂ© instaurĂ©e pour empĂȘcher les firmes industrielles de concentrer un pouvoir excessif dans la finance, ce qui leur aurait permis de restreindre l’accĂšs aux services bancaires pour leurs concurrents ou leurs clients.

Dans le passé, le fait de brouiller les lignes entre la finance et le commerce a causé des problÚmes majeurs.

Par exemple, dans le secteur financier, l’abrogation en 1999 du Glass-Steagall Act sous la prĂ©sidence de Bill Clinton a supprimĂ© une barriĂšre de longue date entre les activitĂ©s plus risquĂ©es de la banque d’investissement et l’aspect plus stable de la banque commerciale, centrĂ©e sur la gestion des dĂ©pĂŽts des clients. De nombreux experts estiment que la disparition de cette sĂ©paration a contribuĂ© Ă  ouvrir la voie au krach financier de 2008.

MĂȘme si ce scĂ©nario peut sembler extrĂȘme, Brian Shearer souligne que « mĂȘme des perturbations mineures des principes fondamentaux de la rĂ©gulation financiĂšre peuvent avoir des consĂ©quences profondes sur l’ensemble du systĂšme financier ». Des rĂ©gulateurs ont d’ailleurs mis en garde contre un possible effondrement financier si les cryptomonnaies venaient Ă  s’immiscer dans les marchĂ©s bancaires traditionnels.

Le GENIUS Act intervient Ă©galement Ă  un moment oĂč les rĂ©gulateurs financiers, sous l’impulsion du CFPB, intensifient leur pression sur les gĂ©ants de la tech, accusĂ©s d’abuser de leur pouvoir de marchĂ© pour imposer leurs propres services de paiement, assortis de frais de transaction Ă©levĂ©s.

Apple, Google et Meta disposent chacune de leur propre rĂ©seau de paiement, et Elon Musk a dĂ©jĂ  exprimĂ© son intention d’intĂ©grer des services de paiement Ă  son rĂ©seau social X.

Apple Pay a mis en place le systĂšme de paiement en ligne le plus avancĂ©, avec prĂšs de 800 millions d’utilisateurs dans le monde. Dans le cadre d’un procĂšs antitrust intentĂ© par le ministĂšre de la Justice amĂ©ricain, Apple est accusĂ©e de contraindre utilisateurs et dĂ©veloppeurs Ă  utiliser son propre rĂ©seau de paiement.

Brian Shearer, ancien juriste au CFPB, explique que dans le cadre du GENIUS Act, Apple pourrait lancer sa propre « carte de paiement » en stablecoin, qui détiendrait les dépÎts de ses clients et offrirait au géant technologique un accÚs encore plus poussé aux données financiÚres et transactionnelles de ses utilisateurs.

Les plans de Meta pour l’émission de sa propre monnaie sont probablement les plus sophistiquĂ©s qui soient. En 2019, son PDG Mark Zuckerberg avait annoncĂ© le lancement d’un jeton crypto baptisĂ© Libra, avant de faire marche arriĂšre face aux vives rĂ©actions des rĂ©gulateurs, tant aux États-Unis qu’à l’international. Plusieurs autoritĂ©s de rĂ©gulation fĂ©dĂ©rales, dont le prĂ©sident de la RĂ©serve fĂ©dĂ©rale, Jerome Powell, avaient mis en garde contre les risques que ferait peser sur les marchĂ©s financiers une supervision laxiste de produits financiers comme Libra. Par exemple, les paiements effectuĂ©s sur des plateformes technologiques ne sont couverts par aucune assurance des dĂ©pĂŽts.

L’annonce de Meta concernant Libra a attirĂ© l’attention du CFPB, qui a ouvert une enquĂȘte sur les rĂ©seaux de paiement des gĂ©ants de la tech. À l’issue de cette procĂ©dure, l’agence a adoptĂ© en 2024 un ensemble de rĂšgles soumettant les services de paiement opĂ©rĂ©s par des entreprises technologiques aux mĂȘmes normes rĂ©glementaires que les institutions financiĂšres classiques et appliquant aux stablecoins la lĂ©gislation relative Ă  la fraude, Ă  la protection de la vie privĂ©e et aux autres lois de protection des consommateurs.

Peu aprĂšs l’annonce de ces rĂšgles, Mark Zuckerberg, lors de son passage dans le podcast The Joe Rogan Experiences a critiquĂ© les dĂ©cisions du CFPB, tandis qu’Elon Musk a appelĂ© Ă  la fermeture pure et simple de l’agence.

La toute derniĂšre version du GENIUS Act pourrait bien retirer au CFPB son autoritĂ© pour faire appliquer ces rĂšgles. Sans son intervention, c’est toute une mosaĂŻque d’autres rĂ©gulateurs financiers, bien moins rigoureux qui serait chargĂ©e de surveiller ces pratiques pourtant potentiellement nĂ©fastes.

Alors que le projet de loi suit son cours au SĂ©nat, des informations indiquent que Mark Zuckerberg envisagerait Ă  nouveau de lancer un stablecoin pour son entreprise. L’une des raisons invoquĂ©es pour justifier cette initiative serait de faciliter la rĂ©munĂ©ration des crĂ©ateurs de contenu Ă  l’étranger sans avoir Ă  se plier Ă  des procĂ©dures bancaires internationales fastidieuses.

Si les lĂ©gislateurs adoptent la loi GENIUS et autorisent les projets de Meta Ă  aller de l’avant, l’entreprise pourrait, en pratique, devenir sa propre institution financiĂšre, au service d’une clientĂšle existante de prĂšs de quatre milliards d’utilisateurs dans le monde de ses plateformes de mĂ©dias sociaux.
