The main building block to get me started was Nextcloud. It's an amazing hub for almost everything you might need: Notes, Tasks, Contacts, Files and Calendar, and it can be extended with other applications to really use it as your digital centerpiece.
I installed Nextcloud on a Linode server, using the base Nanode at 5⏠per month, and installed Nextcloud in one command line, through SNAP. I know, I know, but it was just super convenient. I went with version 18, since it come with OnlyOffice pre-configured, I'll talk about that a little bit later.
Where Nextcloud shines, is in its integration with almost anything you might want to use. It uses open protocols like Webdav or caldav, and this means a lot of applications can sync to Nextcloud. As a matter of fact, if you're using GNOME, you can just login with your Nextcloud account and server, directly from the "Online Accounts" settings panel, and everything will be automatically synced to the default GNOME applications, which is pretty nice.
Syncing with a computer is pretty easy: either you use GNOME, and you just log into your account, and get auto sync right off the bat, or you sync individually to the apps you want to use.
File syncing can be done through the Nextcloud application, available through an appimage, or through Flatpak. I set it up in a bit of a weird way, since I don't want all my stuff located inside a single Nextcloud folder, so I've set up what they call folder sync connections, which basically map the content of a local folder on your hard drive, to a folder on Nextcloud. This means that my documents, for example, are not inside the Nextcloud folder, but inside the Documents folder in my /home/ directory.
I also sync my Notes to the Nextcloud/Notes folder. Little side "note" here as well, these notes are stored as individual files, so you can edit them manually without going into Nextcloud, so you can use any application of your choice.
I have defaulted to /e/. This is a completely degoogled version of Android, which I've talked about in a previous video.
This has access to all android apps, minus the paid ones, and all apps on F Droid as well, so it's usable in a day to day scenario. It kinda looks like iOS by default, but you can install any launcher you want in there. It also uses MicroG to give you access to most Google apps if you really can't live without them.
This system provides default applications that are not linked to Google services, but integrate perfectly with Nextcloud: tasks, calendars, contacts, notes... You name it. This is what I'm using as a daily driver, on a Galaxy S9+.
You can achieve the same result on any Android phone using an app called DAVx5. It's paid for in the Google Play store, and free on F Droid. It just lets you enter your Nextcloud server and credentials, and lets you select what you want to sync to your device.
Now, in that scenario, you'll get calendars and contacts, but Notes and tasks probably won't sync to your manufacturer's application, so you might have to download a specific Android app to handle these instead.
You can also get the Nextcloud app, that lets you auto upload your pictures and syncs your photo albums as well, into separate folders.
Now, what we're lacking is a phone to computer integration. Fortunately, there is KDE Connect, a fantastic tool that also works on other desktop environments, and even has a GNOME extension called GS Connect. It lets you receive notifications from your phone on your computer, send text messages from your desktop or laptop, send files back and forth just like AirPlay on APple devices, or use your phone as a remote control for audio on your desktop, or a plain old touchpad.

Je souhaite par la prĂ©sente introduire une plainte Ă lâencontre de la chaĂźne LN24, Ă propos de lâĂ©mission âBonsoir chez vousâ diffusĂ©e le dimanche 16 juin 2025, animĂ©e par Saskia Violette, au lendemain dâune importante manifestation ayant rassemblĂ© plus de 110 000 personnes Ă Bruxelles en solidaritĂ© avec le peuple palestinien.
Lors de cette Ă©mission, un dĂ©bat a eu lieu autour de la situation Ă Gaza. Lâun des invitĂ©s, Alain Kupchik, sây est exprimĂ© de maniĂšre particuliĂšrement problĂ©matique, en tenant plusieurs propos mensongers, outranciers, historiquement faux et potentiellement discriminatoires, sans rectification sĂ©rieuse de la part de la journaliste ni de la chaĂźne.
Voici les principales déclarations faites par M. Kupchik :
- « Les camions dâaide nâont jamais cessĂ© dâentrer Ă Gaza. Jamais. »
- « Câest un hoax : la famine, ce nâest pas exactement ça. Il y a des Gazaouis qui mangent des crĂȘpes au Nutella. »
- « Zéro mort de faim. Les seuls morts sont ceux tués par le Hamas. »
- « Le peuple palestinien est une invention de la propagande soviétique entre Brejnev et Arafat. »
- « Les images de Gaza sont des mises en scĂšne, une opĂ©ration de propagande anti-juive. Vous nâavez jamais entendu parler de Pollywood ? »
Ces propos, proférés sans nuance ni contradiction solide, relÚvent selon moi :
- de la #dĂ©sinformation manifeste (contredisant les faits Ă©tablis par lâONU, Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, etc.) ;
- dâun discours nĂ©gationniste concernant la rĂ©alitĂ© de la #famine et des souffrances civiles Ă Gaza ;
- et de propos potentiellement incitant Ă la haine ou Ă la stigmatisation dâun peuple (les Palestiniens), en les prĂ©sentant comme intrinsĂšquement manipulateurs ou malveillants.
Je considĂšre que ces propos nâauraient jamais dĂ» ĂȘtre diffusĂ©s sans mise en perspective rigoureuse, ni modĂ©ration active.
Motifs de la plainte
Au regard du CSA, je considÚre que LN24 a potentiellement violé :
- Lâarticle 2.4-1 du dĂ©cret SMA (4 fĂ©vrier 2021), qui interdit la diffusion de contenus incitant Ă la haine ou Ă la discrimination sur base de lâorigine nationale ou ethnique.
- Son obligation dâinformation honnĂȘte, vĂ©rifiĂ©e et respectueuse du public.
Au regard du CDJ, je considÚre que #LN24 a manqué aux rÚgles suivantes de la #déontologie journalistique :
- Article 1 : non-vérification des faits, absence de prudence, absence de mise en doute.
- Article 3 : déformation par omission.
- Article 4 : absence de prudence dans la diffusion.

Federated Services are services which many instances form a network to provide a greater whole than the sum of their parts, each participant in the Fediverse is an âinstanceâ. A message or other item made available on one instance is visible and available on other instances.
We make these services available to all people who do not abuse it in order to promote the values of Free Speech, and those of the United States Constitution First Amendment. A free republic is not possible without free speech and commercial mainstream media do not provide it. We also get some advertisement benefit from hosting these, it is our hope that people who see how fast and responsible our services are will decide to do hosting or use other paid services here.
There are numerous federated services available, we offer Macrobloging platform Friendica, Hubzilla; Microbloging services Mastodon, Misskey, a federated search engine, Yacy, and a federated cloud service, Nextcloud.
Macrobloging services are message systems that allow long form posts similar in format to Facebook. These allow for works of fiction, poetry, technical papers, news items, short stories, and more. These formats are most useful for discussion of social issues.
Microbloging services allow only short form posts similar in format to Twitter. While you can link to larger articles elsewhere, you have a relatively short character limit and so can not post them directly.
Censorship, is handled much different on the fediverse than on mainstream media like Twitter or Facebook. On the fediverse, each individual instance is responsible for content available on that instance, but does not censor the rest of the network. Thus if you find the rules of one instance too constraining you can move to another.
Federated search engines are analogous to federated message systems in that each instance chooses what portion of the internet it wants to crawl. When you enter a search term, the local instance queries all of the federated instances, collates and sorts the results and presents them to you. As with messages, each instance can have itâs own censorship policies but no one instance can censor the entire network.
Given the wild-west nature of the fediverse, it is probably not suitable for children under 14, and youâre guaranteed to find some material that will offend virtually everyone. With federated search engines, material that is inappropriate will usually be flagged sensitive or nsfw (not safe for work) so as long as you donât expand material marked as such, you can avoid this sort of material. There are occasionally people who violate these rules, we do our best to remove such individuals none the less some will get through.

Friendica.Eskimo.Com
Friendica is a decentralized long format macrobloging message network. It is similar in format to facebook however there is no centralized censorship. Also, it is able to federate with all other federated message systems which use ActivityPub protocol and also we have extensions that allow it to speak to several other networks via other protocols.
Hubzilla.Eskimo.Com
Hubzilla is similar in message format to Friendica in that it allows long posts. However, it specializes in itâs ability to provide connectivity to multiple protocols and so we include it in our mix of federated services primarily for the better connectivity it offers. Hubzilla provides a great deal of interoperability between many networks though ActivityPub is still itâs primary protocol. Hubzilla gives you a greater degree of control over privacy than some of the other networks. You can create private channels that are served between hubzilla instances and other compatible instances.
Mastodon.Eskimo.Com
Mastodon is first and foremost an alternative to Twitter. While Twitter has Tweets, Mastodon has Toots. The format is very similar. Mastodon toots have a limit of 500 characters. Similar to the short limit of Twitter. This is why this platform is referred to as a Microbloging format. Mastodon interacts with other ActivityPub instances however when a long form blog post from another instance arrives, you are only shown a short portion with a link to follow to see the full post on the originating site.
NextCloud.Eskimo.Com
If you are a customer of Eskimo North, your login credentials will work without a domain extension to access Nextcloud. If you are not a customer you can apply for a Nextcloud account using your choice of login and password, in this case the login should include your originating network. Some features require an Eskimo North shell account to take full advantage of.
Pixelfed.Eskimo.Com
Pixelfed is a federated pixel gallery. A place where you can share your photos to the widest audience possible, and you can view what others have shared. Instance is new as of April 6th, 2025.
Yacy.Eskimo.Com
Yacy is a federated search engine. There are several thousand instances on the Internet. Each instances crawls whatever portion of the web the administrator requested. It is also possible for the administrator of a site with relatively few resources to request a larger site to do crawls on their behalf. Unfortunately, it does not provide a method for an end user to initiate a crawl, but if you send e-mail to support@eskimo.com and request a crawl, we will initiate a crawl on your behalf.
