Laptops are not generally designed to run like that with a closed lid. Heat dissipation is designed around the idea the laptop is open and some of it is through the keyboard surface. The lid closed would change that.

Systems can of course be setup to power off the display but for server/service uses open laptops may not be efficient space wise.

Having said that if the scenario is low power use the heat dissipation may not be a major issue. But if there is an unremovable battery i'd still be concerned about heat dissipation with the lid closed and even just the battery itself regardless of heat dissipiation.

I remember 2 years ago trying out Lemmy and getting a few laughs about beans and trying not to poop. I thought "this is ok, but I don't think this will ever replace Reddit in my day to day."

But I stuck with it and have come to love and appreciate Lemmy. The number of users has continued to grow and I feel like there's enough content here now that I never feel bored. Plus I feel like even small posts and comments get attention and we're not just screaming into the void.

So happy cake day to all who did the same thing!

Correctly, there are calls for impeachment tonight from outside and within Congress. I suggest you write whoever youโ€™ve got up there to do the same. But I do not expect it to go anywhere; I am absolutely confident the MAGAts will find a way to justify their 100% spin on the โ€œpeace presidentโ€ and why bombing Iran โ€“ an absolute act of war โ€“ is just fine and all the more reason to worship their shit-stain incarnate God Emperor.

Iโ€™ve got a short essay going up tomorrow morning at 7:48am. If you know why 7:48am on Sunday is an important time, youโ€™ll probably have some idea what itโ€™s about. Youโ€™re probably not completely right โ€“ but youโ€™re quite certainly not really wrong, either.

To be very clear, the enrichment sites bombed by the US and Israel in Iran will more than likely not cause a release of radiation into the atmosphere or even local population centers.

Following recent bombings the IAEA already reported only contamination WITHIN the facilities, and that most of their concern was chemical.

Whatever radiological impact will occur will be infinitely eclipsed by the deaths a follow-on war will cause. Let's focus our energy on preventing that.

From what I read, the strikes against Fordow were largely unsuccessful, with no damage to the actual installations. Similar can be said about Natanz and Isfahan. So this was an attack with limited to no success, that will put #Iran in a situation where they HAVE to respond. This response can easily trigger an open war, maybe even a war declaration (the only thing the Democrats are complaining about).

the u.s. is almost certainly suicide. it is a deterrent. its the final deterrent to defend the state. the bee's sting.
but they cant back down from israel. bc thats a fair fight and its a matter of honor. with respect to Israel, CosmickTrigger's crude analogy is more appropriate. there is no reason to stop hitting israel until they surrender and stop the genocide.

For 30 they'd would have to attack several times. I doubt they did.

The wear and tear of fully loaded aging airplanes is pretty big btw.

The USA has made it clear that only nuclear armed countries are considered sovereign by the Empire. North Korea is weak in every other way, but is treated as an equal. The long term outcome of that is that every small nation will want nuclear weapons.

Nuclear weapons for small nations is the same argument as gun rights for individuals: it's the only thing that deters a bully. By being a bully, the Empire makes everyone want the only weapon that seems to deter the Empire.

MacOS Preview equivalent

Title mostly says it all. Preview is unironically an incredible piece of software. Between feature set and ease of use, I have yet to come across any FOSS that is comparable. Anyone know of a Linux alternative?

EDIT: Due to popular demand I should explain Preview more. Itโ€™s a โ€œfully fledgedโ€ PDF editor, but somehow itโ€™s completely different from something like Adobe Acrobat. The way most users will interact with it is as a seemingly very plain image viewer, but if you open a PDF you can add fillable boxes, rearrange pages, split and merge PDFs, etc. I cannot place exactly why itโ€™s workflows feel so much better than something like Acrobat.

okay everyone, here's Khameni's response after the bombings, with english subtitles. bc everyone is out here acting stupid.
note that after the attack he still uses the hypothetical "IF" the united states chooses to enter this conflict.
hours after the fact, i am still convinced that everyone (except netanyhu i guess?) knows this shit's for shows, the iranians suffered a bruise and said they will seek "legal action".
the only question here is whether or not israel keeps hitting. if they do, iran will keep hitting back and i guess over the last week we learned that israel ain't shit. they can massacre a couple hundred more iranians, but it seems even with 3-4 western navies in the mediterranean helping with missile defense, they're taking too many hits. israel is a speck of a country people. you can't just be losing a couple buildings every night.
and then IF israel hits back we'll see something interesting. whether trump will go in or not. after tonight, i'm genuinely convinced he doesn't *want* to go in. he's willing to put on a show for the neo-cons but he really doesn't *want* to sully his name. he won't *want* to do anything that'll make the iranians hit u.s. assets (except israel bc they started it). it doesn't mean he won't be pressured. but that's what trump signaled tonight.
