I've been homeless and eaten from dumpsters. No "think positive" mindset will get you out of that. You literally need someone to give you a chance to elevate your position in life.
It could be someone helping you fix your car, a place to sleep for a few weeks/months as you get back on your feet, a few weeks of groceries, a job, or nice clothes so you can go to job interviews and be presentable.
At present, I think the number of people that say they're willing to help VS the actual number of people willing to help has a large divide between them - with the willing to help being very small.
@hosford42 rent is a huge thing too, I was absolutely shocked when I was able to buy a house how much that alone changed my life, it took almost two decades of having a high paying job and practically living like a pauper to save up enough for the down payment and get the loan.
My monthly costs cut to 1/3 of what they were while I live in a much nicer/safer area, have a huge back yard, and a good sized house with garage. (moving from slightly-larger-than-studio apartment and street parking)

Also, there are no, "just do X" solutions. The way that the whole system ... everything ... is set up in the U.S. does not account for the welfare of all citizens, and the bureaucracy of certain things (taking care of an expired drivers license or ID, or getting a copy of a birth certificate, for example) can make it nearly impossible to overcome.
@hosford42 this is something that has deeply bothered me the last 10 years or so as I’ve gone from “mostly broke college student” to “pretty successful tech manager”.
As I earned more, I could save more, and relied on credit less (no more rolling balances on my cards). And ironically it was only when I no longer seemed to “need” the credit that I got card offers for lower interest rates and my credit limits ballooned (again, despite rarely ever getting close to those limits).
The worst is how credit “worthiness” is used to gate-keep housing. The lower your score the more likely you’ll be turned away from housing opportunities, even if you actually have the money to pay for it.

Can't ride busses because of pinched nerves (rapid stopping, bounces constantly, hard seats), so if it isn't a medical appointment (or is, but forget to contact Medicaid contractor for pick up), but absolutely necessary, paying through the nose to Uber to get there.
@hosford42 I have a friend who was engaged to be married. Lets just say that didn't happen. He and his partner split. He decided to live out of his car and travel the states for a year to reflect. He thought living out of his car would save him tons of money.
Turns out it was way more expensive to do so. Between the maintenance, gas, pay to park, pay to sleep, eating what he could put of his car. All of it was more expensive than his rent.

@hosford42 I still don't know how my parents did it. Working odd jobs plus finding the time to apply for government programs plus working in a community garden that was essential for putting healthy food on the table, and canning the excess so we'd still have healthy food in winter.
I only get a taste of it when I'm unemployed: suddenly my checking isn't free, I can't pay off my credit cards every month, no health care spending account, no tax breaks, deferring medical care “til later.” That's, like, nothing, comparatively.

(Look, even when you don't have a ton of money to pull you through, if you even have a little savings, or a strong professional network, or own a home, or... Any number of things can make the difference between being ruined by a "bad decision" and getting through without too much difficulty).
@hosford42 I've recently had to pay hundreds of dollars in overdraft fees because my rent was on autodeposit and they kept charging me money I didn't have for months after we moved out, plus other bills that hit an empty bank account as a result, with apparently no recourse to get that money back. We had to try to get the bank to stop payment three times before it stuck. Absolutely infuriating.
It's expensive to be poor. It's ironic but true. You get charges and fees for everything. Higher interest rates. Overdraft fees. Late fees. Having only enough to buy what you need right now instead of buying in bulk. Losing your job because you can't afford to get your car fixed. Losing your car because you don't have a job. Even your mental faculties are drained, as you are forced to continually eat low-nutrition foods, "sleep" in miserable conditions, and be exposed to toxins and lack of medical treatment. The lack of liquidity wipes you out. Life really does kick you while you're down.
You can't tell someone trapped in that vicious cycle to "just" get a job or "just" make responsible decisions. Sometimes, no amount of good decision-making can stop the vortex sucking them down. So the next time you are tempted to place moral judgment on someone who lives in poverty, think twice.

I love that, of all the things I've written, my post on how expensive it is to be poor is the one that has gone viral. But I have to say, it is stressful for me. I'm autistic and I have limited "spoons" -- especially for social stuff. I hate to do this, but I need to ask for help for me, my wife, and my two young daughters. We are desperate. When I wrote the post above, I was doing well and trying to stick up for people down on their luck, because I knew what it's like. Now things have flipped. I've been unemployed since February, and the gig work I was supporting my family with since then has dried up too.
I'm in the final stages of the interview process with a major tech company, which will fix everything, but I'm out of money *right now*. Our electricity will be cut off in 5 days. Our car will be repossessed in a week or 2. We have taxes we can't pay that will lead to our house being taken. My brother is currently going through this. He has lost nearly everything with 11 days until he does lose everything. I flew out to try to help, but he's not very open to help. He is insistent on becoming homeless. Instead of pushing, I'm just listening to him. I have offered possible solutions, but I told him, all I'm doing is sending links. It's up to you. This is so true. I remember feeling deeply resentful of the monthly checking fees I had to pay because I couldn’t maintain a balance over $1000. The interest I had to pay on credit cards because I couldn’t regularly pay off the balance, the car repairs every 8-15 months because I couldn’t save up for a newer car. It seems to be too hard for people who have never lived like this to realize what it is, that people don't even have the capacity to take a step back and think about things in greater perspective, you just can't afford it being overwhelmed by current tasks that require immediate response and when you have the free time you are allowed to have you are too tired for abstractions 🤷
It's expensive, but it's also incredibly time consuming in so many ways, too. Like commuting to work for two hours because you live far away in a cheaper area and don't have a car. My life is busy and exhausting and it's so hard to keep up. I honestly can't even imagine how poor people do it.

Plus you can only afford to buy cheap things (clothing, shoes etc) that won't last long. And over the years, you will thus have to spend more money on buying e.g. cheap shoes every year than you would spend for just one pair of expensive shoes that last a lifetime...

A homeless person pays £2 just for fried potatoes because they don’t have the means to fry it themselves. If take out was cheaper, few of us would cook. We get a home and a kitchen to solve this problem.
The very wealthy get given free everything as people are trying to please them to either have them spend a lot of money or encourage a lot of money to be spent. Kings of old would receive the biggest gifts. Economics calls this loss leaders.
It is a scale. It’s incredibly expensive to be poor. As people get more wealthy they invest in themselves. It really is an increasing scale. Someone who can buy a brand new electric car won’t need to pay congestion charges when they drive it. If they have solar panels and a driveway, they won’t even pay for fuel.
Anyone who says they don’t care for money has never been poor. Money is just a tool, but it pays for things that keep you warm and safe. It pays for food.
So give to charity, but do better than that. Lobby against poverty, because charity is a patch on the failure of government. Sometimes this is as simple as voting.
I really appreciate this thread. It seems we have much in common. I know firsthand a lot of what you've described. I'm in a somewhat better place now, but still chronically underemployed. Like you, I've learned to cultivate somewhat better social skills over the years, but masking every day becomes exhausting and I find the prospect of advocating for myself on the search for better employment terrifying.
Really, our current society just doesn't work for a lot of us.
This is also enhanced when/if you're disabled because many medical conditions can be both worsened by conditions of poverty- like lack of real home temperature control and lack of the ability to get a special diet, and likewise are eased by conditions of having more money - for things like dishwashers, water softeners, easier to use vacuums and even part time home cleaning services. Meanwhile disabled who can't work often get less than minimum wage in work, even without transit costs.

you forgot about the part where you can't afford back surgery or proper mental compensation because you can't afford to get a proper bed to sleep on, or needing to choose between power and water, or the phone bill. or the part where society wants you to be in debt where you constantly oh someone something, even if it's interest rates. how about the part where paying your bills and things that you need to pay off, doesn't even count towards your credit what so ever. and about the part where in most situations, having bad credit is better than having 0 credit? been there, did all of this. Thank you for the inspiration, I needed the extra push to share my story. When I was 17 I was homeless for the first time for 2 years. It was only through the charity of my first wife's family that I was able to get off the street. The second time I was 35 and spent 5 years homeless and an out trans-woman. That was 11 years ago. If there is one thing I learned it was that we can only survive hardship with solidarity and perseverance, and with those things we can defeat anything!
And as you touched on mental faculties, when days bring you only suffering, that small emotional reward that comes with a pizza, a packet of crisps, or a can of beer is way harder to resist. When I was poor, I could not make myself have salad for dinner instead of fried chicken, or go for a run in the park instead or seeking relief in beer and a reality show. And worst of all, knowing that it will never get better because you don't see how it could, just makes you stop trying.

I'm fortunate enough to be in a place right now where the bills are paid, and my wages just about stretch to the end of the month. But we've just adopted a pair of beautiful cats, and it freaks me out if I can't afford to have at least three weeks worth of food for them. That stress is really low level shit, but boy does it build up.
In those situations, anything that gives a baseline security is extremely valuable. making sure we have baseline housing, food security and healthcare frees up so much means and mental energy when you have nothing to be able to turn things around, it's not even funny. I always made sure my public transport was taken care of because even just being able to visit friends also meant more varied food. That's an option most people in the US don't have.
Man this resonates with me. The mental tax alone of not having money (to something as simple as counting the dollars you've put into your grocery cart) is incredible.
Most people who say crap like "well make better decisions" rarely were in situations where they ever had to make decisions.
I have met at least 150 people living in the worst of that vortex, homeless, when giving them bicycles. Decent people trying to claw their way back out of it. Most I meet once and don't know how they have done; a few have gotten jobs they could get to on the bike, gotten low income apartments, are climbing out. One now has job, home, and car; he helps others, has brought them to meet me to get a bike. It is a hard life and the survivors are some of the best people.
don't forget that you can't store stuff that you only use occasionally because you have a tiny apartment and can't afford a storage locker, leaving you to either beg off friends (if you have them) or rent per use. And most services require a significant time investment (lots of standing in line, regular reapplications, traveling to offices around the city) so they're especially difficult to access if you're working poor cause keeping up with that is like an extra part-time job
and you don't even need to put the bar that low; if you make just enough for the month, you still get hit by banking bullshit and abusive fees until you can't save a single cent, and you'd consider yourself lucky if your debt didn't increase, while your brain is required to focus on keeping a shit job
OMG! It's so damned true! You're not the only one to have been a Have and a Have-Not and the Have-Nots are growing. I'm telling you, a lot of what's going on is a scam against the people for those in power and the wealthy to get richer while people grow poorer. I'm one of the 63-70% that are living paycheck to paycheck, depending upon the source. Many I know are working two jobs or on Social Security and working or SSI for disability and working or just the Social Security or SSI alone. I know too many who don't even get $1,400 a month. Regrettably, it's only going to get worse.

Absolutely we are fined nickel and dimed, well family members and well to do friends complain about a small tax here or there. Hidden homelessness is real and I have experienced it. There's a lot of shame.. there's a lot of freedom and also interesting and good things to come of the experience because I chose to find those good things. But that was my journey not everyone will feel that way
I sometimes romanticize the sound of rain on the back of my van's windshield. Curled up with my wife and my cat in the city at night. How we drive to the lake and open the trunk. We didn't know how we would have handled things. I had friends who didn't help who always talked a big game about how they'd help or be there or die for me and my wife. People who attended my wedding. Family members who didn't want anything to do with us. We didn't even do drugs. Not that that matters

This is so true. It sickens me that people are expected to have two or three jobs to just barely survive. Minimum wage should be so much higher - one full-time job should provide a decent living.

I wish that the left in general would be able to distinguish between actual victories and symbolic victories. Symbolic victories are what you get when you can't win actual victories, and usually represent recuperation or other forms of counter-insurgency:
I pretty much hate symbolic victories. DEI programs, for instance, or Pride logos for companies, never did anything to alter their institutions and when they went away no one really missed them. No effective constituency continued to demand them.
The whole "class politics vs identity politics" debate was confused by people defending symbolic victories on both sides.
My neighbor and husband got their kitchen do-over recently. Last evening, it just dropped from the ceiling. Freaked them out. 😂 It was on one of those cords, so it didn't hit the floor, lol.

The latest instalment of the #Palestinian resistance’s miracle-making transpired in Khan Yunis on Tuesday (June 24) when it dealt multiple blows to eliminate all seven Zionists inside an armoured personnel carrier (APC) in another of its trademark complex ambushes. All seven dead Israelis belonged to the 605th Combat Engineering Battalion in what one Israeli outlet called “one of the deadliest incidents for the Israel Defense Forces in months.”
Here’s how the deadly operation unfolded:

The device exploded, causing the armoured vehicle to catch on fire.
I am all in favor of this. There are beer flights at so many restaurants but tiny strong & delicious cocktails with small foods would be such a great starter to a meal. Something bitter but not enough to get drunk and not be able to enjoy the food.
When I am working up a recipe, often I will invite people over and make 4 different versions but then split each drink into 4 little dixie cups so that each of us have only one drink's worth of alcohol. That doesn't fix the drink getting too warm problem but does let us test them clear headed.
Using downsized recipes is pretty standard for me when I'm drinking at home. For a lot of cocktails, half-size or third-size is just fine, especially when you start experimenting with ingredients and ratios. And I have something of an issue with actually committing to a full-size drink (i.e. I often get bored of it halfway through).
However, one of the biggest barriers to entry is the need for smaller glassware, which, while not impossible to source, is limited in its variety. “Where I see a lot of room for improvement is tiny rocks and tiny Highball glasses,” Zielinski says, noting that miniature coupes or diminutive Martini glasses are more readily available.
This is definitely an issue. I've been using stemmed liqueur glasses for small Martini-style cocktails, but even in somewhat smaller rocks glasses a half-sized Old Fashioned-style drink just looks lost.
