We are constantly fed a version of AI that looks, sounds and acts suspiciously like us. It speaks in polished sentences, mimics emotions, expresses curiosity, claims to feel compassion, even dabbles in what it calls creativity.
But what we call AI today is nothing more than a statistical machine: a digital parrot regurgitating patterns mined from oceans of human data (the situation hasn’t changed much since it was discussed here five years ago). When it writes an answer to a question, it literally just guesses which letter and word will come next in a sequence – based on the data it’s been trained on.
This means AI has no understanding. No consciousness. No knowledge in any real, human sense. Just pure probability-driven, engineered brilliance — nothing more, and nothing less.
So why is a real “thinking” AI likely impossible? Because it’s bodiless. It has no senses, no flesh, no nerves, no pain, no pleasure. It doesn’t hunger, desire or fear. And because there is no cognition — not a shred — there’s a fundamental gap between the data it consumes (data born out of human feelings and experience) and what it can do with them.
Philosopher David Chalmers calls the mysterious mechanism underlying the relationship between our physical body and consciousness the “hard problem of consciousness”. Here I go again...My brother is sick and in the hospital right now. He Does NOT wanna be there, but he got to a certain point, and then it was kinda out of his control. He didn't take good care of himself, and now it has caught-up to him.
Luckily, I'm in town, so I was able to see him before he went to the hospital. I figured it was probably heat exhaustion. I was a good sister, I got him a cold towel, some popsicles, and various drinks to rehydrate. He lasted a few more days, but then he had to give in and go to the hospital. It was only getting worse, not better. He couldn't breathe to walk. Family was insistent.
Sure enough, he has Pneumonia...He had an abscess inside his lung that had to be, (puking sounds) drained...he has some tube in his back...but he's feeling much better with being rehydrated, and pumped...they took over a liter of liquid off his lungs...He's doing better, thankfully...
Buuuut, here's the rub...The hospital...wants you to not only show ID, which I cannot stand doing...bust also...get this...take your picture, BEFORE entering the hospital for a visit.

We have lived histories of violence, (like the mudslides) in our municipality, since 1996, with the paramilitaries, violence that stopped the Acteal massacre, but never totally ended, the most recent history is what is happening in some communities, for example, Tzajalch’en that denounced the presence of armed groups linked to organized crime identified with the governments. A few days ago, there were shots fired, there were no injuries, but a climate of fear was created, provoked by armed men who entered intimidating the community. The GN and the army arrived, but instead of providing security, of investigating the armed groups, more gunshots were heard. Then the Immediate Reaction Forces, the Pakales, arrived in the community, they pretended to go after the aggressors, they entered the Ignacio Zaragoza school, they detained a member of Las Abejas de Acteal and the community agent, they falsely accused them of kidnapping, but after intimidating them they had to release them. We hear in the news the words of the governor saying that “no one is above the law,” but the Pakales do seem to be above the law, because they are unjust, arbitrary, they do not respect us as people, they violate our rights, or which law?
Because the violence in the area is escalating, the communities are warning about the risk of a massacre of the Tsotsil people by organized crime. Will the history of 1997 repeat itself, when, after we denounced the presence of the paramilitaries, and Jtotik Samuel also alerted the government that if they did not take care of it something could happen, but they did not believe us, will history repeat itself?
On the other hand, in the north, many of our brothers and sisters are suffering the separation of their children, they are being criminalized, some are in prison, others have been deported by the president of the United States, Donald Trump, and all are suffering repression by the Armed Forces that the same president mobilized in different cities, reinforcing his authoritarianism.
But we recognize and thank the fraternal people of the United States, who reject the repressive policies of their government, protesting in the streets, in favor of our sisters and brothers from Mexico and the world who work in their country.
It also hurts us in Palestine, that a dehumanized Israel continues the genocide, killing innocent children, people attacked by snipers while looking for food and hundreds of wounded who die for lack of medicine, using hunger and medicine as weapons of war, and not satisfied with finishing off Palestine, attacks Iran, putting humanity at risk, with a third world war, which would end the life of the planet.

I installed Linux Mint on my Lenovo Yoga 7 laptop and it's been great, with the one exception of not really having a tablet mode when I flip the screen. Its not a huge deal, but I watch shows that way and sometimes miss an on-screen keyboard.
The actual keyboard stays active when flipped, which is fine until I pick it up or have it on my lap and accidentally hit some random key.
It seems from some looking around that Mint doesn't do great with this and I'm open to a different distro that's fairly beginner friendly, but even better if there are some options I'm missing to keep what I have.
I use archlinux with KDE and I had to tinker with it for hours if not days for it to properly have an automatic on screen keyboard that is not complete bullcrap. But since then it works. Even on LUKS decrypt during boot.
mint uses X11 which should be considered legacy at this point. wayland (Gnome, Plasma) has all the touch and dock/undock and rotate and pen etc goodies. try it out from a liveUSB and decide for yourself.
Why is mint even recommended to new users at this point. Cinnamon is nowhere near Gnome or Plasma and both of these provide much simpler and more unified experience in things like settings

It seems that our rulers, here in the 'liberal' West, have homed in on a new way of turning a person into a non-person.
Here is a man, Hüseyin Doğru, a German journalist (of Turkish origins, but not a dual citizen) whom the EU authorities have found a novel, immensely cruel, way of punishing for his coverage of, and views on, Palestine.
The German authorities learned a lesson from my case. Not wishing to be answerable in court for any ban on pro-Palestinian voices (similar to the court case I am dragging them through currently), they found another way: A direct sanction by the EU utilising some hitherto unused directive, one introduced at the beginning of the Ukraine war, that allows Brussels to sanction any citizen of the EU it deems to be working for Russian interests. Clinging to the argument that Hüseyin’s website/podcast used to be shown also on Ruptly (among other platforms), they are using this directive aimed at an ‘anti-Russian asset’ to destroy a journalist who dared oppose the Palestinian genocide.
In practice, this means that Hüseyin’s bank account is frozen; that if you or I were to give him cash to buy groceries or make rent then we would be considered his accomplices and subject to similar sanctions; it also means that if he were a civil servant, he would be fired; if he were a student he would be expelled from his university; if he received a pension it would be suspended; if he received any social benefit it would be frozen. It also, astonishingly, means that he cannot leave Germany!
Last, but definitely not least, it means that Hüseyin cannot sue his government for turning him into a non-person but only challenge the European Commission in Brussels – where he is not even allowed to go!
