La pauvreté est ordinairement étudiée par le biais des difficultés qu’elle provoque, des coûts qu’elle engendre, des politiques publiques ou privées qui la causent, ou bien des conséquences qu’elle produit sur les populations concernées. Dans cet article classique paru en 1972 dans l’American Journal of Sociology, inédit en français et précédé d’une introduction de Hadrien Clouet, Herbert Gans renverse la perspective et cherche à identifier l’intérêt qu’ont certains acteurs au maintien ou à l’extension de la pauvreté. Au lieu de pointer les problèmes issus de la pauvreté, il en recherche les avantages : si elle survit aux politiques publiques, c’est que la pauvreté profite selon lui à certains groupes sociaux.
