Yesterday, 2/3 of Dutch parliament voted for laws designed by Wilders' PVV to make life for refugees and other asylum seekers in the Netherlands even more miserable. Even giving support (food, shelter) to 'illegal aliens' would become a criminal offence. nos.nl/l/2573574

Today, the green/social-democrat opposition party started a petition to block these laws in the Senate.
It has 60,000 signatures already:

Probably the three chapters from which snippets are quoted the most at those who think like me to "prove" what we're saying is false.

It is ironic because those are probably three of the strongest passages stating exactly what we're saying. They're where we even get the idea.

Land acknowledgements are like this: Your parents give you $100k, you ask where it came from and they say "we stole it from Larry's parents, but they're dead now" and then, instead of giving the money to Larry, you spend the money on yourself, but every time you buy something you say "I feel bad about screwing Larry" like that makes you a good person. If you really believe you’re on stolen land, then give it back or STFU.

So I had an eye appointment today. As I'm waiting , this woman comes in with her husband to pick up her new glasses. Can't have the fit checked properly because that would mean taking off, or at the least moving, her hijab. So the woman serving her does the best she can to fit them and tells her to come back if there are issues so they can try again. Husband is also wearing glasses but since he doesn't have to wear any kind of covering I suspect his were fitted correctly the first time around.

Mongabay India podcast ‘Wild Frequencies’ wins audio reporting award

Mongabay India won an excellence in audio reporting award recently from the Society of Publishers in Asia (SOPA). The award was for the limited series podcast Wild Frequencies. SOPA, which promotes best practices and excellence in journalism, announced the winners of its 2025 Awards of Editorial Excellence during a ceremony in Hong Kong on June 26. Wild Frequencies, a three-episode series that follows researchers in India studying animal sounds to better understand wildlife, is hosted by Mongabay India’s Kartik Chandramouli and Mongabay’s Shreya Dasgupta. It features sound design and original music by Abhijit Shylanath. SOPA shared the judges’ comments on the series: “With a rich audio-scape and creative sound design, rigorous reporting and engaging storytelling, these reports from the field (and forests and wetlands) around India offer listeners a deeper understanding of how the sounds [are] made by creatures in the natural world, and what those creatures and their bioacoustics can tell us about whether an ecosystem is healthy or imperiled.” The series also won “Best Science and Medical” podcast at the Publisher Podcast Awards in June and the “Best Produced Show” in the science category for the India Audio Summit & Awards 2025. In 2023, Mongabay won SOPA’s Excellence in Bahasa Indonesian News Reporting Award for the story ‘The promise was a lie’: How Indonesian villagers lost their cut of the palm oil boom, which was a collaboration with The Gecko Project and BBC News.

It’s so frustrating that there is this illusion that we are all 49%/49% right now. Us versus them, good versus bad, and it’s all because of the BS that is the electoral system. It’s very likely 70% versus 30% and we’re just not seeing representative government. There’s just no common sense right now

I agree 100%. It hits harder now with having two young children and seeing what's happening in the world. Just heartbreaking.

But yes I agree. We can either give up or fight back somehow.

And giving up is not an option.

To be honest these interactions with people like your self help. Knowing you're not alone in how you're experiencing it all. 💚

P.s. I've changed accounts yet again to self host. I've prob chatted with you now from about 5 accounts.

Pamela Geller lists the acts of jihad in the US since the Garland, Texas jihad shooting. Yet one year after jihadis attacked our Muhammad Art Exhibit and Cartoon Contest in defense of free speech, the West is in full surrender mode. In the wake of the Garland jihad attacks, the world says: let the bullies silence you. Don’t draw Muhammad. Comply with their other demands.
We went into the event with our eyes open. We knew the risks. But we knew the risks were greater, for our children and our children’s children, if we allowed the freedom of speech to be destroyed by violent intimidation.
Yet still we were cast as the villains. An imam told Sean Hannity that I should be executed. Non-Muslim media and political figures agreed with him that in standing for free speech, I had provoked the jihadis. Fox News host Martha McCallum pleaded with me to respect Islam and constrain myself. Bill O’Reilly said I “spurred” the violence. Erin Burnett accused me of “relishing” being targeted for beheading.Alisyn Camerota on CNN battled with me, trying to bully me into adhering to sharia law.Chris Cuomo was almost brought to tears by the thought of drawing Muhammad. Juan Williams and I had a knock-down drag out on Hannity. Geraldo Rivera compared me to the Aryan Nation, skinheads, and the KKK, and said, “Every time I see her on TV, I want to take a shower.”Carly Fiorina likened our free speech event to white supremacist marching. Donald Trump said I was an obnoxious blowhard (!) who was taunting Muslims. The list is long. The leftist networks (i.e., MSNBC) were unhinged. I could go on, but you get the picture. One year on, jihad in America is raging. We were right. Gerard Perry wrote an excellent essay on the “shortsightedness of the media lynch mob.” But still people are afraid to have me speak. CPAC refused to allow me to host an event. Ironically, Donald Trump is suffering the same abuse I received from him, for speaking candidly about jihad terror and Muslim immigration.

YSK that you can often get higher-quality information in your searches by searching specifically for PDF files. You do this by appending "filetype:pdf" to your query

You can even add a search like this to your browser's inbuilt search engines, with a string like this:
* searx.bndkt.io/search?q=filety… %s &slanguage=all
* duckduckgo.com/?q=filetype%3Ap… %s &ia=web

The %s is the placeholder string used by both Firefox, Chromium, and many of their derivatives like LibreWolf, ZenBrowser, and Vivaldi. You'll need to remove the spaces around it in the two URLs above (as Lemmy changed all my URLs without spaces to something different).

I'm on Caterpillar's email list. Sometimes they're links to white papers, sometimes relevant for other reasons. And sometimes it's just to announce sales or special offers.

A friend was looking over my shoulder and noticed the subject line "See the latest deals on Cat parts" and had questions.

Ah that’s fair, I can see where you’re coming from on that. Those icons could 100% be generated with AI given the right prompting.

In my book, they look way more like stock assets to me due to how generic the symbols are, and the consistent styling. The “army guard” icon is kinda sus because of the stick “gun”, but that can be read as deliberate ambiguity to appease potential corporate customers who don’t want gun depictions in their vector stock images, and same deal with the generic “six point star”.

You’d also think they’d have chosen some sort of more detailed depiction of “isolation & surveillance” than a megaphone, or a lightning head for “fear & control”. If any of the accompanying text was included in the prompt to generate these images, the output would’ve been completely different.

If you know anyone in the European Union who is seriously considering buying Meta's spyglasses, please remind them that using those privacy nightmares would make them a controller according to the GDPR. They'd be responsible for ensuring full compliance with our privacy laws, which - surprise, surprise - will be impossible.

Please tell them to save themselves and everyone around them the trouble and give the money to any NGO instead.

You know what one of the crazies things about the US is?

A cop can pull you over on the side of the road and be like "Please take this breathalyzer test" and you can say "no" because that's your right.

But he can also say "please step out of the car" and if you say "no" then he'll beat your ass and claim you're resisting, because that's not your right.

So the word "please", in US legal parlance, has 2 meanings:
1. Would you please wave your right not to do this?
2. By my authority I am compelling you to do this.

And they won't tell you which one it is, or they may lie about which one it is, and if you do it and you had the right not to then it's assumed you waved that right.

(AFAIK)

Today in Labor History July 4, 1910: African-American boxer Jack Johnson knocked out white boxer Jim Jeffries in the 15th round, leading to race riots throughout the U.S. 11 separate riots occurred in NYC, alone. There were riots in 50 cities, including New York, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Houston, New Orleans, Atlanta, and St. Louis. At least 20 people died in these riots. Johnson, who was also known as the Galveston Giant, became the first black World Heavyweight champion in 1908, which made him unpopular with the predominantly white audience of boxing. He held that title from 1908-1915 and quickly became the most famous black man of the era. The racism against him was so intense that many, including socialist writer Jack London, called for a Great White Hope to fight him and take away his title. Jeffries, a former heavyweight world champ, came out of retirement specifically to prove “that a white man is better than a Negro.” Johnson’s victory in this fight earned him $65,000 ($2.1 million in today’s dollars).

With his winnings, Johnson opened a multi-racial restaurant and nightclub, Club Deluxe, which he ran with his white wife. Because of this, the authorities arrested him for violating the Mann act (transporting women across state lines for immoral purposes). President Trump pardoned him in 2018, something Reagan, both Bushes and even Obama refused to do. Johnson fled the country to avoid arrest, but continued boxing abroad. Eventually he turned himself in and served time at Leavenworth Prison.

"The rich and powerful don’t care if you dye your hair or pierce your nose or kiss a member of the same sex or say Hail Satan. They don’t care if you support one mainstream political faction over the other, or if you yell empty words about anarchy and revolution that aren’t pointed toward any real material goals. They care very much, however, if you are undermining public consent for military and geopolitical agendas they’ve worked very hard to propagandize the public into accepting.

The establishment never dropped the hammer on Marilyn Manson. Lady Gaga never ran into trouble with the state for singing that gay people are Born This Way. Ozzy Osbourne is living in the lap of luxury with an estimated net worth of $220 million. But groups like Kneecap and Bob Vylan are being subjected to police investigations and visa revocations for taking a stand on Palestine.

Which, of course, is only going to make their position more popular among young people with a defiant streak in them."

Today in Labor History July 4, 1977: The George Jackson Brigade planted a bomb at a power station in Olympia, Washington, in solidarity with a prison strike at the Walla Walla State Penitentiary. They were a revolutionary group founded in the mid-1970s, based in Seattle, named after George Jackson, a prisoner and Black Panther who was shot and killed during an alleged escape attempt at San Quentin Prison in 1971. The Brigade was composed of both communist and anarchist veterans of the women's liberation, LGBTQ and Black Nationalist movements.
