...I want everyone to notice something about it in particular: when they try to write these articles, they end up doing *shitty journalism*. The Claudia Grey stuff, the Mamdani stuff, the trans stuff, sanewashing Trump ... it's not *just* irritating to lefties, it's also demonstrably bad journalism.
The point I want to make is: this is not coincidence. You could not do what the NYT is trying to do while maintaining high journalistic standards. Why? Because in reality, the parties are asymmetrical. The right has become deranged, violent, & illiberal. Dems are bog standard center-left party.
We really need to make this point over & over again. When they say, "we're going to try to be more fair & represent the right's perspective," it *sounds* (especially to them) like trying to do better journalism, but in practice, it is the opposite, because the right is built on lies.
Again: there is not some other approach whereby the NYT could represent the right more & still do high-quality, multiply-sourced, factchecked journalism. It's a null set. That's not journalism's fault, it's the right's fault.
Elite journalists wriggle & wriggle & try & try but they can not escape the fundamental dilemma: journalism is, by its nature, supposed to be on the side of accuracy, against lies & liars, but the GOP is lies & liars top to bottom. And for reasons of power & access, journalism can not say so.

I generally go for a desktop environment, I just like the versatility. I completely understand the appeal of window managers though and when I've used them in the past I was quite impressed even.
i use KDE, and i prefer using a desktop environment. a DE has everything already preconfigured, so that it's usable right out of the box. window managers need to configured right after installation since they don't have stuff like taskbars, and sometimes they don't even have default shortcuts except for the terminal.
gnome (vanilla), by intentional lazyness. It's the least effort path, it's the most tested on my distro, minimizing the risk of bad surprise during upgrades. While I had to get acostumated to its UX at the beginning (years ago), I now feel productive since then, and ended up enjoying it, though without comparing with others.
DE, because usually is pretty out of the box. I'll never get the eye candy as anything like GNOME DE with some extensions. Speaking of... which is your fav DE for eye candy? (if resources were not a problem)
- DE, usually Gnome 4x with a bunch of extensions (such as Arc Menu & DesktopCube) added, if its on a nicely spec'd system - or Budgie, XFCE, Lomiri or Phosh once in a while, on less powerful devices, as well.
I use whatever can give me a web browser and a bunch of terminal emulators placed in tidy places around my screens. Background images are nice, but I quite often cover them up with windows containing said browser and clis. Outside of that, it doesn't matter too much.
I used to joke that the best thing about guis is the tidy placement of lots of tuis.
@Karsten Johansson @It's FOSS I prefer a pulldown menu to the mess that KDE gives and I prefer the older style Mate menu, though by default now it ships with the same menu as Gnome, it is easy to remove that menu and put the classic menu back up. I use the Marco built in Window manager both because it works locally but also plays well with x2go, some of the others do not.I make use of virtual desktops, so an interface that makes it easy to switch between them is convenient. Mate works well in this respect. I just hit control+alt and then use the left or right arrows to move up or down. I have 16 work stations configured but usually am only using five or six, but there have been times when I've had all 16 in play.
For the longest I used xfce on latest Debian stable. But for some reason the Bluetooth was not showing up nor was the user credential changer. So I switched back to gnome. I love xfce for how light weight it is. I even ran it on a beefy setup 8cors 32gb of ram etc
@It's FOSS At one time I had a dell with 4GB of RAM and two cores, then a light desktop was important. Presently I am using an i7-9700k with 96gb of RAM and nvme, so not so much. But x2go doesn't work well or at all with accelerated graphics so some things are still best avoided if I am remoting in to one of my servers.

@It's FOSS I used to use a model 35-KSR at the local telephone company to install software updates into #1ESS machines or to add hardware in preparation for a growth job. Such fun.
@ABSURD @It's FOSS Since I sometimes display X-apps remotely over the network as opposed to using an entire remote desktop with X2go, and since also I have Intel graphics which work with the kernel X-server, I don't use Wayland for both reasons. I am hopeful that either some day Wayland on Wires will reach a mature state where it actually works, or XLibre provides an efficient interface that works with gamers and then can have the best of both worlds, but for now that is the case.
KDE is the base environment on my main system. For daily work in virtualized environments, I always use a window manager—typically DWM, and lately I've been really enjoying Niri.
Window Manager. I love Hyprland. While I do love KDE, it has so many unnecessary for me options and bulk, that is not usable for me, especially on older laptops. With a window manager you get flexibility and just the things that you need for your use case. I chose Hyprland because I wanted to stay ahead of the curve and use Wayland. Everything I need just works on Hyprland! I use Arch-based CachyOS.
I would say desktop environment. After doing some distro hopping to find what I like, it has turned out to be the desktop environment and software store / package manager that drive my decision on what I am using. I don't think that I have used a straight up window manager that did not come from a desktop environment (example: install icewm on a distro that did not come with it).
WM. Always a WM. The last time I used a full-blown DE as such was in the KDE3 days. My WM-of-choice is AwesomeWM. And as for why... In the early 2000s when I was learning HTML, I realized that my 'Dream Desktop' would be just like a HTML page - no fixed structures, everything user-scriptable. And AwesomeWM is the closest thing to that ideal I've seen so far.
A WM. I use awesomewm. Because you choose yourself how your desktop should look and work. (I like to keep it clean and simple). And it is the perfect combination of ricing and minimalism.
I'm lazy af: The one which comes by default. But if I had to choose I'd throw a coin for either KDE or Gnome. Both very lovely and well crafted Desktop Environments and I do not want to favor one over the other. Therefore random it is.

Why assume that petroleum is formed mostly of animal remains.
Petroleum is a fossil fuel derived from fossilized organic materials, such as zooplankton and algae. Vast amounts of these remains settled to sea or lake bottoms where they were covered in stagnant water (water with no dissolved oxygen) or sediments such as mud and silt faster than they could decompose aerobically.
When I was a kid, there was a chain of service stations^1^ in the western US that used a dinosaur as its logo. This pretty clearly implied that petroleum has something to do with dinosaurs.
Petroleum was formed from stuff at the bottoms of lakes and seas laid down long before dinosaurs dominated.
It's just as easy to teach people (kids in particular) the truth, so why not do so? "Gasoline, kids, comes from algae and plankton, not dinosaurs."

You'll notice that I wrote "service" stations, not "gas" stations. The difference is significant. We still have gas stations, but we haven't had service stations in nearly 50 years.
In the film Back to the Future you'll see a service station. BTW, service stations were history when that film was made, and that film is already 40 years old.

If you started paying attention to the US in 1960, this sure feels like the darkest timeline. But unfortunately, purges against Black & brown people are normal US behavior.
You know what's NOT normal US behavior?
This is the first time there's been a mass movement to STOP a purge in real time.
This is new and unusual. To get an idea of how weird this is, let's take a quick tour of some of the many times the US federal government has officially persecuted entire groups of people.
1929-1939: the US "repatriated" somewhere between 300K and 2M Mexican Americans. No due process. The federal government removed them from the US to "stop them from competing with Americans for jobs."
About half of the deported people were US citizens.
Few if any Anglo Americans seemed to have a problem with this.
Mexican Americans ran the court battles, protests, and educational campaigns against forced deportation on their own. While they were struggling to keep their families together day by day.
WW2: the US jails 120,000 people, who hadn't been charged of any crime, as a "precaution." 2/3 were US citizens. Many were farmers. White folks wanted their land, & got it.
The loss of so many skilled farmers dented the US food system & made it harder to fight the war.
Some white Americans did publicly oppose rounding up their Japanese neighbors. They were in the minority & overruled.
Resistance was limited to individual efforts to tone down the impact of incarceration- tending jailed neighbors' farms while they were away, sending supplies to the camps, etc.
Public outrage over the many US citizens deported caused Operation Wetback to get its funding pulled. … After 3 months & over 1 million people deported.
This was the fastest a purge ever got rolled back. But it still took people a while to notice & stop it. At the supposed peak of US unity.
Slavery & Jim Crow: millions of Americans held in captive labor.
Enslaved & sharecropping farm workers knew things were bad! They did what they could to push back the whole time.
But that wasn't enough. Both slavery & Jim Crow finally ended when a critical mass of white Americans decided they should. Not even the majority of white Americans. Just a critical mass. And it took us ~250 and close to 100 years to get there, respectively.
The US & its preceding colonies were at war with tribes ~each year from 1610 - 1920s- 300 years.
There was more opposition from white folks than you'd think; but it wasn't broad-based, organized, or effective. We're still breaking treaties with tribes today.
I think I hear you, this scale of response this quickly being new. That, makes sense and suggests how key it is to get more coverage of that resistance and especially its successes out there, so that it can keep growing quickly.

If the U.S. was all about that the whole time, there never would have been a Civil War OR an end to the Vietnam War, and this should be said. No, the U.S. wasn't born in 1960 , but it was in the 1960s that the people you describe lost power--Vietnam ended, Civil Rights were encoded into law--and it was also the time when the Republican Party morphed from the Party of Lincoln into the Dixiecrat-Kremlin Party.
But understand this: I stand with the NAACP and ACLU to make it known that we're Americans too, and we will NOT be overlooked.

my grandfather's best friend was part of that. His family was in a camp in Arizona. He ended up serving in the Army and fought all through Europe. They lost their dairy farm as a result of being rounded up.
I met him about 30 years ago when they were all old men reminiscing about the war.
We donated an audio record postcard that he sent my grandfather from the camp of his valedictorian speech to the archives at Manzanar. It was wild listening to it as a kid because it was so normal

Yeah, like you said, I'm just glad people are speaking up about this in a big way because this has been happening for decades. I think one of the key differences is that they've dropped the pretense that what they're doing is "justice."
Liberals have been more than happy to lock black and brown people up en masse as long as they can run them through the system first. If someone is convicted of a crime, they're completely okay with throwing them in prison. Does "convicted" mean "guilty?" Should what they were convicted of even be a crime? We've never really had a meaningful conversation about that in this country.
But the numbers really speak for themselves. Things *were not okay* before Trump was elected. When this fascist regime falls apart, we *cannot* go back to how things were before.
From the thousands dying now abandoned by USAID, or those in Ukraine who suffer by the reduction in military aid? Or maybe from Palestinians shot by so called 'American aid contractors'? Or maybe the 132,000 trans people who will now be denied medical care?

This is a great, informed take. Not rose colored glasses but forward thinking and historically grounded. I couldn't agree more about the whole 'this being the worst timeline' being really problematic. That's a cop out; that's throwing your hands up; that's giving yourself an excuse to give up and not try. It's showing a lack of imagination, if you truly cant think of worse things. There were times during the Cold War people lived in constant fear of nuclear annihilation. It's also showing a lack of historical knowledge, especially knowing that the underlying issues of what is happening (racism, sexism) are foundational particularly to Western culture, and human culture in general. We've never actually had a reckoning with our past (or present). To think that these issues were just going to go away quietly is naive, or that somehow with education we had suddenly become not-racist. It's also not surprising that we are having a hard time forming a coherent resistance party given how much technology has changed politics in the last 20 years, and given the diversity and complexity of global problems we are facing. Let's give this issue, the rise of violent ultra-nationalism in the 21st century, its due as the complex historical problem that it is and not get frustrated when we can't solve it or defeat it in six months. But like you say, there are signs that American society as a whole, not just those directly persecuted, are resisting in ways that are novel. We are far from powerless here and I'm really tired of takes that paint us as such.

But there is one more thing that people need to stop pretending. #WhiteSupremacy is NOT bipartisan any more. The Democratic party IS the party of Black and Brown people and IS anti-fascist. And having an entire political party with that position IS a first. FDR is the one who interred Japanese Americans. Truman did as well, and deported millions of Hispanics. He also stood by during Jim Crow and the abuses of Black WW2 veterans. Nixon's Southern Strategy changed all this.
