I used to think packaged pre-cut veg at the supermarket was for lazy people.
Then a disabled person pointed out it was a lifeline for them because they lived alone and couldn’t cut it up themselves most days.
I had never even considered that. It changed my perspective and I think from then on when something seems “lazy” I always ask myself “is this just accessible?” And it’s nearly always the latter.
It’s not hard to listen to someone when they say something is not accessible and it’s not difficult to shift your perspective. I don’t know why so many people won’t.
Years ago, back on twitter, I remember the writer George Monbiot talking about an automatic stirring device as an example of how materialist society was obsessed with creating useless things for no good reason.
I'd bought one of those robot stirrers for my Dad. He loved making sauces for everything, but in his last years, illness meant he couldn't just stand over a stove stirring constantly. It was hugely beneficial for him.
I absolutely hate how prevalent is the idea that the wants and needs of disabled people always have to be the first thing to be sacrificed. And it does always seem to be labour-saving devices and produce that are seen as the problem; nobody ever objects to washing machines, presumably because they help non-disabled people too.
I was the same, and I hope I'm learning how to shift my perspective a bit. I've seen it said that most things listed as "convenient" could also be labelled "accessible", but society prefers to think consumers are getting an easy life, rather than someone who really needs it getting assistance.
It hits the button in our brain that makes us feel better for being better at some things, but lied it's way into appearing not morally decadent while doing it.

Yeah, I had a similar attitude towards "needlessly" electric kitchen tools such as electric pepper grinders and electric knives. Then I injured my hand trying to take the lid off my pepper grinder to refill it, and, being diabetic, it took months to heal. I got myself an electric pepper grinder. Didn't want the same injury to happen again.
Things which might be "lazy" to able-bodied folks, can make a big difference to those less able - even for something as trivial as pepper.
When one reaches a certain AGE or ABILITY.. THERE IS GREAT NEED for things ready made or smaller or as seen in others eyes .. Those in NEED have become INVISIBLE .. because people do NOT want to admit it could be themselves one day ...

I'm chronically ill raising a family and chopping vegetables was quite difficult for me, but I kept it up for a long while. But it made eating healthy tough. Then some years ago, I switched to chopped veggies, frozen veggies, canned veggies, and already washed veggies. It helped me immensely. I now tell everyone do whatever you need to do to eat healthy.
there’s a similar thing with Christmas stuff in shops in September or whenever. I don’t get annoyed now after someone pointed out that some people really need to plan ahead and buy a little each week to be able afford Christmas.
Yeah I can attest to this, though I still manage so far, for how long anyone's guess.
See for me with MS I can get uncontrollable shakes at times, left side of body is more affected/weaker, I'm left handed, cut left handed, so as you might imagine, a knife is a dangerous and deadly tool, and when you shake uncontrollably the knife then does random chopping motions, it's then I pull back remove other hand, I could easily take out multiple fingers quite quickly.
So what do I do, well, I rest the tip of the knife on board - stability, and slowly cut in down strokes/method, that way because I'm pressing down all the time the knife does not leap around hunting for my fingers.

I used to think that my propensity for seeing someone else's perspective was because I was weak; that's what society seemed to think. Then I learned better, and thought it was probably because I'm a scientist, trained to adapt to new information. Only lately (I'm 56) have I begun to suspect that I might be autistic, and that neurotypical people might be deficient in this matter.
I've become convinced there is actually no such thing as "lazy", at least not as the word means.
I got dinged for being lazy when I got a robot vacuum. I asked the person why using a regular vacuum cleaner *wasn't* "lazy" when beating rugs was an option.
"Lazy" just means "that's not what I do".
Sometimes "lazy" means "you found a more efficient way and I resent it".

As someone who has trouble cutting things, I'm thankful for the containers of mixed fruit, which I use for my bowls of fruit salad to have something healthy at dinner. So yeah, don't judge. Someone may appreciate having fruits and vegetables prechopped, to make life easier.
Nice post. People will change their minds about this once they break their arm or leg. Then they’ll realize how making things accessible is good for everyone. At least that’s what happened to me.
I thought it was a misguided sales ploy. I would hardly see that stuff at a supermarket - I only got confronted with it through "food saving" in some of our crowds. But of course, this makes sense.
Got another one for you. Buffets? The single least accessible means of providing food to a large number of people.
My perspective, as a cane-user: I am already one-handed. So immediately, I have the problem: how do I hold my plate, while also filling my plate? Rarely is there room on the buffet for a plate to be set down. Almost no one ever thinks to offer assistance to people who have disabilities in using the buffet.
Before I even get to the plate, of course, I have the problem of how they bring people to line up. If, as is often the case, they call it table by table, then I am almost certainly, by random chance, going to end up in a long line waiting to access the buffet. Standing is painful to me, even more so than walking.
So I'm exhausted and sore. I arrive at the buffet. I get a plate and cutlery, which somehow I manage to carry in one hand. I have to balance the plate on my cane-arm while trying to pile food on it with my non-dominant hand.
Moving down the buffet, I come to the dessert tables! Hurrah! Only the only way to get a dessert is to have...another plate!
So I get no dessert, because I don't have a free hand to get it with.
And that's just one person's disability. Wheelchair user? Reaching those bowls up high on the table is going to be hard. Visually impaired? How do you know what you're putting on your plate? What if there's something in it you're allergic to? Gonna read the card maybe?
Missing an upper limb? See above re: being effectively one-handed. Palsied hands? Good luck. And so on, and so on, and so on.
And yet, over and over, I go to conferences, ostensibly social justice-focused affairs, and *every time* they pick the cheapest option, and make no effort to accommodate people for whom the cheap option is the no-food option.
Also worth applying this thinking to a lot of kitchen gadgets that a lot of people would say, “just use a knife to chop your onions” or whatever the purpose

I’m autistic and thus have chronic fatigue + executive functioning issues…plus I work full-time! so pre-cut/peeled vegetables and meal prep tools make a *huge* difference during the times I’m able to cook from scratch
another perpective might suggest questioning why someone assumes or judges character flaws in people who buy certain products. Who cares who buys cut vegetables or holiday decorations?
I do wish that we could get some sustainable packaging though... Peeling oranges is hard for me but at least the peel will biodegrade eventually :/ I hate having to choose between sustainability and accessibility. Fortunately these days I can just cut an orange, but not everyone can and no one should have to make that choice
related factoid: a lot of the day-time shopping tv suff (amazing garlic peeler-chopper so simple you can use it one-handed! wonderful clips-on-the-side-of-your-saucepan sieve so you can literally just pour out the boiling water! etc.) are often accessibility utensils. sometimes they sell on tv to try to meet minimum production volume from the factory.
I haven't been able to cut a vegetable for 4 years now. Can't even cook for the most part unless my husband is home to lift everything and cut as well. Thank you for noticing this! pre-cut veg is for someone who works a day job and then still has to get dinner on at a reasonable hour.
600g kipfiletblokjes (chicken breast cut up) 250g soepgronten ("soup vegetables", carrot, celery, leek, a few other things, shredded) 250g Pappardelle (fresh wide pasta noodles) 1 jar of concentrated boullion, plus three more jars of water. Olive oil for sauteeing Spice to taste
Season blokjes as you will. Sautee blokjes in oil in bottom of big soup pot until all outsides have colour. Add boullion, water, veg, cook according to directions on veg package (usu 12 min-ish). Add fresh noodles 5 min before veg should be done.
Bam! Chicken soup, all fresh ingredients except the stock, no chopping, 20 minutes, and if you deal with the recyclables while the soup boils, your kitchen is clean except for pot, spoon, and ladle, and whatever you're serving/storing it in.
That's my fastest recipe, but I've got goodly handful of others that depend on the Dutch penchant for ready-to-cook, pre-chopped fresh ingredients, everything from aardappelen (taters any way you can think of'em, sliced, chunked, pureed even) to zalm (salmon filets anywhere from a single portion to a whole side)... it's extremely *practical* is what it is, and I double-dawg-dare anyone with a day job and no live-in staff to come try it and then argue with me...
(oh, and speaking of sliced bread - the Dutch have half-loaves. They don't tend to use much in the way of preservatives, so it's _good bread_, but it doesn't stay fresh for long... instead of one whole, I'll get two halves, chuck one in the freezer... I lose a lot less bread that way, and even _white bread_ smells and tastes like BREAD and not this Wonder pasteurised processed "bread" food product meal... ptui... and did I mention the good stuff is cheap as chips?)

A couple of decades ago someone pointed out that all the "as seen on tv" devices were aimed at disabled people, but weren't *marketed* as such because then they'd never sell, and at that point I stopped being judgmental about such things. And, yeah, applies to pre-cut vegetables, and smart appliances of various sorts (esp. lights).
the pre-cut veggies section is also really great for single people who want just enough veggies for a meal for one. Otherwise, you are buying veggies for 4, and they are spoiled before you can get through all of them.

I had originally gotten an M&P Shield, but that design was super defective- the slide would stick open, and the company was a nightmare to deal with. from what I've heard and read it's a great carry gun. the dealer at the store where I bought my (not a hellcat) carry gun recommended it. no manual safety, if you care about that.

This question came about over a discussion my brother and I had about whether dogs should be on leashes when outside. We both agreed that yes, they should, for several reasons, but that's not the point.
Let's use a hypothetical to better illustrate the question. Imagine that there's a perfume - vanilla, for example - that doesn't bother you at all (you don't like nor dislike it), but that is very upsetting to some people, and can even cause some adverse reactions (allergies or something). In this hypothetical, based on the negative effects, you agree that vanilla perfumes should be banned. Currently, however, they are allowed.
You're walking down the street, and randomly smell someone passing you by and they're wearing a vanilla perfume.
Would that upset you? Why, or why not?
My answer is yes, without a doubt. Even though the smell itself doesn't bother me, the fact someone would wear that perfume and not only potentially upset others, but put them in danger, is upsetting.
My brother, however, would say no! He couldn't explain his reasoning to me.
I know this is a little convoluted, but I hope I got my question across.
My response might be sligtly convoluted, but I'll try to keep it simple. It relates to allergies.
For me, I am extremely allergic to oysters, and largely also allergic to shellfish. I'm so badly allergic to oysters that I cannot be in the same room as someone else eating them, the smell alone makes me gag, my eyes water, and makes my bronchial tubes swell where I can't even breathe.
I however am luckily not allergic to peanuts. Regardless, I totally understand how potentially deadly a peanut allergy can be to those with the allergy, and if I'm in a public place around strangers, I tend to assume that anyone around me might have a peanut allergy.
Last year, I was in line at a gas station, and the woman in front of me waiting to pay had bought boiled peanuts. And she was fucking shelling and eating the peanuts while waiting in line, the bitch couldn't even wait to pay for them, with cash, and exit the store first.
I called her out on it, and even pretended that I did have a peanut allergy, and what she was doing was not only nasty, but also a danger to others handling her peanut juice covered money.
She proved to be a Karen and not give a fuck, but I did speak my mind, on behalf of people that could possibly fucking die over her nastiness and carelessness.
Even though the woman proved to be a Karen, the cashiers working the store that day totally understood why I was upset. If only they had or enacted a policy of don't consume any products in the store...
As far as the dog on the leash thing, we're about 99% in favor of that, only exception being when we take our dog out to our city park, where we adopted him from as abandoned.
Brownie knows every inch of the park and I feel it would be wrong to not let him roam free occasionally when there's not many people or other animals around. Those sort of days are few and far between though, so 99% of the time he's on the leash.
If it's an off leash park it's fine. If it's on lead have them on lead. It isn't about your dog it's about everyone else's dogs. Dogs on leash are significantly more reactive when another dog runs up to them, so it's important to have control of the dog, lest one of the dogs gets badly hurt.
Our park is mostly a water park for kids at the front, with a couple pavilions, and a boat ramp and senior citizen center in the back. So yes, it's not an official dog park, but unofficial its accepted as one by pretty much everyone.
We keep him on the leash when there's lots of people or other dogs around, but on days when the park is practically empty, we let him roam free and burn his calories.
He was abandoned for like 5 months out at the park before we decided to adopt him, so most regular park visitors already know him. Police officers approve, they even helped us adopt him.
He's a medium size dog, and mostly chill, just sometimes playful. He's never hurt anyone.
Of course that's not true for all dogs though, hence why we're very careful regarding what sort of days we might let him roam around off the leash.
I don't even have half an idea what all foods do or don't contain gluten, but I am still almost equally inclined to call out people just plain out being nasty, especially in a public space where they're about to exchange paper cash.
Like shit, I totally respect paper cash, but FFS, try to make sure your hands are clean when handling or exchanging money. And definitely don't be literally eating food with your bare hands right at the register before even paying for it.
There was a certain type of perfume that seemed popular back in the 90s, that would make me instantly gag and almost puke within seconds. I have no clue how anyone found that as any sort of pleasant smell.
To me I thought it smelled like a woman with a nasty yeast infection, trying to cover it up with potpourri. But it wasn't even the women's health causing it, literal potpourri smell alone causes me the same gag reflex, the stuff just smells nasty to me and I can't be in the same room as that smell for long.
So yes, there are reasons to be offended by particular scents, even if others somehow find them pleasant.
