Australian Police Assault Green Party Candidate Hannah Thomas During Pro-Palestine Protest
Hannah Thomas, a lawyer and recent Green Party candidate who ran against Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in the federal seat of Grayndler, has reportedly been violently assaulted by Australian police during a protest.
The demonstration took place outside a company accused by protesters of cooperating with #Israel. According to reports, #Thomas sustained serious injuries to one of her eyes during her arrest and was rushed to hospital. Doctors fear she may lose her vision as a result.

I'm contemplating to replace 1-2 aging desktops in our home by "gaming" laptops.
What really bugs me with the Linux laptops I currently have is that sleep is unstable or inefficient. On one device it sometimes just won't wake up. On both the battery is drained fully within few days. I have a MacBook at work and know I'll probably not hit the same level of stability and efficiency in sleep, but I'm wondering whether hardware choice can play a role in improving the experience, especially seeing how I might make this my primary device moving forward.
I often grab the Linux laptop and end up going for the work MacBook or my ipad because the battery is dead and I only wanted to check something real quick - it's okay with an old leftover device but it sort of irritates me.
knowledgebase.frame.work/en_us…
You don't need a framework laptop to get unsupported "as-is" hibernate .
What Is Hibernate on Linux Hibernate is a powersaving state where the contents of the systems memory RAM are written to a designated storage space usuallknowledgebase.frame.work
That is not what that says at all...
You mentioned a problem, you've been given the solution, yet you're still here to rail against it...
Thanks for your input! What's the issue with Asus? Their Rog series has some really nice hardware it seems and might be something I can actually walk into a store and try in person.
What about Lenovo? As an owner of two ThinkPads and with friends happy about their Legion devices that's the one other manufacturer I have on my radar regarding "might be available in a store in my country".
The main issue is that a lot of these bigger manufacturers have 3 tiers of hardware they kick out:
1) consumer-grade/junk
2) professional/developer/niche
3) enterprise hardened
If you find a model of something you're looking to buy for sale at big box stores, it's going to be total junk: windows-centric hardware with low reliability, but really cheap to produce. Stay away from those, as their Linux compatibility is going to be horrendous UNLESS you've heard otherwise specifically about a particular model.
Lenovo has done something interesting in the last few years and blurred the lines between #1 and #2, so now it's a crapshoot. ASUS ruined their #2 tier stuff years ago by including gimmicky stuff like touch bars, and secondary displays without ANY support except for Windows.
For Linux compatibility, you need to make sure your components either already have driver support, or is made by a company who directly releases or contributes Linux drivers. AMD and Intel are top of that list, with Nvidia kinda/sorta doing the bare minimum for consumer-grade components, but full support for enterprise-grade stuff.
If you're not sure all the components in the machine you're buying already have Linux support, it's going to be a crapshoot. ASUS specifically makes crappy moves by including things that notoriously DON'T have native Linux support like: Broadcom chipsets, or random audio codecs and speakers that are essentially windows-only.
You can look around and see people's experiences with specific models of ROG, but even those are kind of iffy because of the above. Depending on what you want to use it for, you may be able to work with certain things not working, but if you're talking laptops and Linux, I'd steer clear of anything with Nvidia in it for the battery life alone.

#Norway is becoming an authoritarian country. Our government, the US government, and the CIA-cutout National Endowment for Democracy ( #NED) finance "non-governmental organisations" (NGOs) such as the Norwegian Helsinki Committee to smear, intimidate, censor, and cancel dissent.
There is plenty of literature on how governments finance "NGOs" to hijack civil society and use human rights to promote regime change and wars. Besides leaving a trail of disasters behind them abroad, they also punish dissent at home.
I have been at the receiving end of endless articles and weekly smears online from this so-called human rights "NGO" for more than four years, which continues to go after my university even after I had to withdraw from all national media. Their other activities include cancelling my speaking events and doxxing me.
Now, this "NGO" is being banned in Russia, and they blame me for it. Why? Twenty professors and academics signed a letter criticizing this "NGO" for harassing me, and now the "NGO" speculates that it attracted the attention of the FSB. This is the actual story they are going with, but it is good enough for the people we generously refer to as journalists.
A few weeks ago, a journalist applied and was granted full access to all my documents at the university, which includes everything from the job application to my professorship promotion application. Why? To go through everything and look for anything that can be presented as academic dishonesty. This is how you get academics fired.
The useful idiots of this "NGO" even produced an absurd Wikipedia profile on me, where my occupation was not "Professor" but "Russian propagandist." Returning to my home country after 20 years abroad was truly the greatest mistake of my life. I do not recognize this country anymore, and I wear the absurd personal attacks by these government-financed trolls as a badge of honour. Absolutely pathetic and unworthy of an open society

#Ukraine must be involved in any #negotiations for a peace deal with #Russia, President #VolodymyrZelensky insisted on Sunday. The Ukrainian leader says that he won’t accept any deals made between U.S. President #DonaldTrump and Russian President #VladimirPutin if he and his team are not also invited to the table.‘I will never accept any decisions between the #UnitedStates and #Russia about Ukraine – never,’ Zelesnky told NBC Meet the Press host Kristen Welker. ‘And our people, never. And our adults, and children, and everybody, it can’t be so.’
Nobody asked him and nobody cares. Not only can it be so, it will be so. There are precisely two choices:
1. The USA negotiates a peace settlement with Russia.
2. Russia dictates an unconditional surrender.
That’s it. That’s the entire list. And it was obvious from the very start back in February 2022. Notice that nowhere on it appears anything about #Zelensky, the #Kiev #regime, the #UN, the #TerranConfederation, #Starfleet, or the #EuropeanUnion. All of those entities are #irrelevant to the outcome.

Why is there so much bloodshed?
Well, here's one very clear reason:
From 2020 to 2024, private weapons manufacturers got $2.4 trillion in Pentagon contracts, roughly 54% of its discretionary budget
During those 5 years, the U.S. government invested over twice as much money in five weapons companies as in diplomacy and international assistance. $771 billion went to just 5 firms: Lockheed Martin ($313 billion), RTX (formerly Raytheon, $145 billion), Boeing ($115 billion), General Dynamics ($116 billion), and Northrop Grumman ($81 billion). The total diplomacy, development, and humanitarian aid budget, excluding military aid, was $356 billion.

Large Language Models have made the relationship between software efficiency and environmentalism click for many people in the technology field. The cost of computing matters.brokenco.de
🎵 Everything counts in large amounts🎵 ーDepeche Mode, "Everything Counts"
When I was young, and naive, I thought that the end goal was to take "bloated" code (even if it were some binary generated by a ghastly [to me at the time, horrifically inefficient boiler plate code visible from a simple hex editor] C compiler) and hand optimize it, I don't think I was alone.
In more recent years, the XlogicX blog "Assembly is too high level" (e.g. xlogicx.net/Assembly_Is_Too_Hi…) gave me hope that perhaps some kept that goal alive!
The demo scene and "code golf" and "size coding" certainly still seem to care.
I attended the 20th anniversary of REcon last month and I am not sure if I met many birds of a feather who shared similar sentiments? At least one I think. That one was well worth the trip if nothing else.
Alas, it seems in 2025, there are far too few of us low level optimize minded sorts left, relative to all the slop being generated, "at scale".
The depressing reality is, SO MUCH good would come of simply re-writing egregiously inefficient interpreted language programs implemented in Python or Ruby or Perl etc. in something such as C, I don't even know where to begin.
Here's just one example, which took some janky Python OpenAI speech to text (which seemed to completely ignore prior art such as julius) that required GPUs and re-implemented it in not even the most elegant or most portable C, but still significantly better than the Python jank: github.com/ggml-org/whisper.cp…
Voila! No more GPUs required! Lamentably, still uses the training models that were probably created completely unethically (unlike the prior art of julius). But still, take the wins where you can get them?
In the article you linked, "In my day job we operate a number of web properties receiving billions of requests per month"
I guess that's a good starting point to consider efficiencies?
I am old enough that 1MHz CPUs were still considered luxuries that I needed to access at labs, not something I had at home. I had been coding for years, before my parents eventually got what was an IMHO insanely overpriced and shitty microcomputer and worse: wasteful with its 7MHz 16bit CPU, running an obscenely bad OS that couldn't even task swap, let alone multi-task.
To quote someone from another blog comment about 1980s DSP designs: "One day I, as a fresh college grad, expressed my amazement at the mathematical processing power of those DSPs, which was impressive back in 1989. His response? 'That just means you can make 20 million mistakes per second.'"
Still, it used to be a prerequisite for some, to have considered the perils of MFLOPs levels of bugs, before they were granted much in the way of a system with an uplink capable of "srs" bandwidth (SGI workstations for example, had 10Gigabit interconnects, in the 1990s; while most home users with modems were still struggling to contend with a reliable 56K connection. My first college as an undergrad had a 56K uplink for their entire campus, and my personal modem could devour approximately one quarter of that bandwidth!).
By around 2013 I helped with a patch a bug in BIND (CVE-2013-4854) that was being actively exploited. It's estimated that there are around a billion DNS packets on the Internet, an hour.
I've known folks who have patched bugs in TCP/IP stacks, so I am not at their levels, yet. Maybe someday? Doesn't feel like it, but you never know. Bugs are friggin everywhere.
Regardless, improving the low hanging fruit where and whenever possible, is a win! Rust isn't my first choice, but there are way worse choices in 2025; unfortunately, some of those worse choices are much more popular.
It is with some chagrin that in recent years, most of my code "contributions" openly, have been to a system implemented in TCL; which is so much slower than even Python and Ruby and Perl (let's say, conservatively, those three languages are on average around 60x slower than C; TCL? On average: 200x slower! Meanwhile, in the 1980s I was already optimizing asm and machine code on systems with nanosecond level timing considerations; contrast that with golang's "halt the world" best in class garbage collector which was measured in milliseconds last I checked? Many don't even seem to pay attention to such orders of magnitude of inefficiencies intrinsic to their language choices! To me, that is unconscionable.). I seem to be at the opposite end of where I once was in some regards, yet the impact to potential users is not insignificant; which is why I keep contributing to such things despite the inefficient implementation choices.
I still think refactoring/rewriting/re-implementing in lower level more efficient languages would be a huge win in terms of efficiency, and worthwhile. But maybe some of that can be automated to a degree?
It's dumbfounding to me that in the 21st century there are still so many companies that rely on what I would consider "time sharing" paradigms and pay for compute and bandwidth in ways that would have been obscenely expensive to the point of having bankrupted some past employers if they were not smarter about self hosting hardware and IXPs and peering (instead of relying on things such as AWS as alluded to in that writing or GCP or Azure and other, as bad, yet popular, alternatives in a day and age where economical libre/free open source hardware with CPUs measured in GHz exist in plurality and RAM in ranges of 8GB or more are being sold for mere hundreds of dollars, if that.).
But I guess, because it is profitable and easy for some to rely on centralized systems, rather than cultivate their own in house expertise? Such avarice and inefficiencies will continue to persist until more wise up?
Similarly, I am guessing it was very strategic that Micro$oft hired Guido van Rossum. It's not that Python is good. However, from a sophomoric perspective, there are a lot of fools, writing a lot of Python and a mint is being made to the detriment of the planet and all living beings who are cursed to be alive right now on it, in the process.
