Hannah Thomas, a lawyer and recent Green Party candidate who ran against Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in the federal seat of Grayndler, has reportedly been violently assaulted by Australian police during a protest. I'm contemplating to replace 1-2 aging desktops in our home by "gaming" laptops.
What really bugs me with the Linux laptops I currently have is that sleep is unstable or inefficient. On one device it sometimes just won't wake up. On both the battery is drained fully within few days. I have a MacBook at work and know I'll probably not hit the same level of stability and efficiency in sleep, but I'm wondering whether hardware choice can play a role in improving the experience, especially seeing how I might make this my primary device moving forward.
I often grab the Linux laptop and end up going for the work MacBook or my ipad because the battery is dead and I only wanted to check something real quick - it's okay with an old leftover device but it sort of irritates me.

What about Lenovo? As an owner of two ThinkPads and with friends happy about their Legion devices that's the one other manufacturer I have on my radar regarding "might be available in a store in my country".
If you find a model of something you're looking to buy for sale at big box stores, it's going to be total junk: windows-centric hardware with low reliability, but really cheap to produce. Stay away from those, as their Linux compatibility is going to be horrendous UNLESS you've heard otherwise specifically about a particular model.
Lenovo has done something interesting in the last few years and blurred the lines between #1 and #2, so now it's a crapshoot. ASUS ruined their #2 tier stuff years ago by including gimmicky stuff like touch bars, and secondary displays without ANY support except for Windows.
For Linux compatibility, you need to make sure your components either already have driver support, or is made by a company who directly releases or contributes Linux drivers. AMD and Intel are top of that list, with Nvidia kinda/sorta doing the bare minimum for consumer-grade components, but full support for enterprise-grade stuff.
If you're not sure all the components in the machine you're buying already have Linux support, it's going to be a crapshoot. ASUS specifically makes crappy moves by including things that notoriously DON'T have native Linux support like: Broadcom chipsets, or random audio codecs and speakers that are essentially windows-only.
You can look around and see people's experiences with specific models of ROG, but even those are kind of iffy because of the above. Depending on what you want to use it for, you may be able to work with certain things not working, but if you're talking laptops and Linux, I'd steer clear of anything with Nvidia in it for the battery life alone.
I'm aware of the Nvidia limitations and thus quite interested int an AMD APU. The Ryzen AI series looks promising. And while it's a quirky form factor I found good reports on the Flow Z13 with an AI Max 395 running Linux. But no one talks about sleep/hibernation in their reviews .
Sleep/hibernation is mostly software config in Linux. The S-statebon every main board will support sleep states 2-4 at a minimum, and you can configure your particular setup to do hibernation without an issue.

As panels are getting cheap, the support structure becomes a serious part of the cost (and even of the embedded energy). You need a lot more steel and foundations for such elevated panels.
Not sure about now, but not too long ago parking lots were money-losing PR projects(look us being green), while the field ones were serious.
Once we have enough PV to saturate summer peaks, every next panel produces less useful power. So lower cost is critical
(there are some plants that, in some parts of the world, have been shown to grow better in the partial shade provided by solar panels than they would in the full sun)

meh. Fields of monoculture crops have very little biodiversity and certainly aren't natural. While wild grassland under solar is pretty good. And if the field was growing corn or similar for a biofuel, then the solar covered field will create about 6 times more energy in the same area. Alternatively, there are quite a lot of crops that do very well when partially shared. Yields of strawberry under PV is better than conventional practices.
Rooftop solar, on just HALF of the world's roofs, would produce MORE electricity than is used today from ALL sources. And would uplift all people, strengthen all people, and drive a permanent economic boom.

In California, where it's often quite dry, we are putting solar farms over some fields to conserve water. In some cases, crops are being planted alongside solar panels. There are many benefits from this dual use, and many applications. Of course we are a massive state "... the size of the Netherlands, Belgium, Slovenia, Switzerland, Austria, Luxembourg, Kosovo and Czech Republic combined.” I imagine that in smaller countries it would be unpleasant to see solar farms everywhere you look.
All the nations have transmission lines. Running across acres and acres, across manufacturing zones, beside residential areas, from powerplant to city to harbour.
Often VERY cheap because govt already owns land.

Galaxy brain: large enough parking lots for a solar farm shouldn’t exist in cities and we should abolish car dependence and build walabke cities to be green.
Also infra for over solar covering car ports is 100x more expensive than some cheap panels in an field.
However there are agrovoltaic systems where spread out panels are elevated above certain crops. They protect fruit yields from excess sun leading to needing excessive watering according to studies.
But yes the urban areas are seeeeriously missed. Did you know you can install them on walls and fencing. They cool better.
Uhm cover both the fields and the car parks. Covering the fields is good for the plants (including the crops! higher yield!), insects and small animals on the fields.
Sometimes placing solar panels on farms actually helps. You may need less irrigation and the optimal amount of sunlight is different for various crops. This may, of course, depend on your climate: it is not "one size fits all."
here in California we have giant fires going on where they just put in controversial grass field solar, which is another point for car parks/parking lots getting solar first. It's closer to where people are, requiring less transmission distance and less vulnerable to wildland cycles of fire & flood.
I've actually read somewhere that covering fields with solar panels instead of mono-cultured farm land actually helps nature, especially animals that can use it to live under and find food (that would potentially not grow on farm land or be polluted with pesticides)
Also seeing as we need to focus on getting rid of cars first I kinda feel like it's a waste of resources to try to make parking cars feel better by adding shadow. 👀
Just get rid of the car parks, put down plants and the solar panels on top. Maybe even some nice parks and sitting areas under it.
Although there is something to be said for putting solar on already-used land if there is a requirement for power there, that car park is probably half the problem - people really need to think about alternative means of travel, and if they need to travel in the first place. Would much prefer it if every public building had solar panels on their rooves.

Farmers have been willing to lease their land to solar companies because it’s guaranteed income and they don’t have to wrestle with year to year weather struggles, yields, labor, etc. It’s guaranteed income and usually higher income than from their traditional farming efforts.
some crops benefit from the shade actually. Some farmers who aren't yet bought out by big corpos need the extra dosh from hosting solar to stay independent too.

Intelligent use of solar panels *can* actually enhance the productivity of agricultural land. Turns out a lot of plants and animals evolved in environments that are occasionally shaded. Who knew? 🤷♀️
And car parks large enough to support a solar farm shouldn't exist to begin with. Put housing and mixed-use buildings there with panels on the roof, instead of panels over an endless plane of tarmac.
Actually, there have been experiments with elevated solar panels over the fields and some crops grow better with partial sun than with full sun full time. It also shields the crop from some things, including helping to shield the crop from extreme wind events and some kinds of bird damage. I would rather see the solar panels on buildings and car parks and bridges and protecting rivers from excessive operation, but that doesn't mean you can't use them over your fields as well when there's an advantage in that.

When I was young, and naive, I thought that the end goal was to take "bloated" code (even if it were some binary generated by a ghastly [to me at the time, horrifically inefficient boiler plate code visible from a simple hex editor] C compiler) and hand optimize it, I don't think I was alone.
In more recent years, the XlogicX blog "Assembly is too high level" (e.g. xlogicx.net/Assembly_Is_Too_Hi…) gave me hope that perhaps some kept that goal alive!

I am old enough that 1MHz CPUs were still considered luxuries that I needed to access at labs, not something I had at home. I had been coding for years, before my parents eventually got what was an IMHO insanely overpriced and shitty microcomputer and worse: wasteful with its 7MHz 16bit CPU, running an obscenely bad OS that couldn't even task swap, let alone multi-task.
To quote someone from another blog comment about 1980s DSP designs: "One day I, as a fresh college grad, expressed my amazement at the mathematical processing power of those DSPs, which was impressive back in 1989. His response? 'That just means you can make 20 million mistakes per second.'"
Still, it used to be a prerequisite for some, to have considered the perils of MFLOPs levels of bugs, before they were granted much in the way of a system with an uplink capable of "srs" bandwidth (SGI workstations for example, had 10Gigabit interconnects, in the 1990s; while most home users with modems were still struggling to contend with a reliable 56K connection. My first college as an undergrad had a 56K uplink for their entire campus, and my personal modem could devour approximately one quarter of that bandwidth!).
By around 2013 I helped with a patch a bug in BIND (CVE-2013-4854) that was being actively exploited. It's estimated that there are around a billion DNS packets on the Internet, an hour.
I've known folks who have patched bugs in TCP/IP stacks, so I am not at their levels, yet. Maybe someday? Doesn't feel like it, but you never know. Bugs are friggin everywhere.
Regardless, improving the low hanging fruit where and whenever possible, is a win! Rust isn't my first choice, but there are way worse choices in 2025; unfortunately, some of those worse choices are much more popular.
It is with some chagrin that in recent years, most of my code "contributions" openly, have been to a system implemented in TCL; which is so much slower than even Python and Ruby and Perl (let's say, conservatively, those three languages are on average around 60x slower than C; TCL? On average: 200x slower! Meanwhile, in the 1980s I was already optimizing asm and machine code on systems with nanosecond level timing considerations; contrast that with golang's "halt the world" best in class garbage collector which was measured in milliseconds last I checked? Many don't even seem to pay attention to such orders of magnitude of inefficiencies intrinsic to their language choices! To me, that is unconscionable.). I seem to be at the opposite end of where I once was in some regards, yet the impact to potential users is not insignificant; which is why I keep contributing to such things despite the inefficient implementation choices.
I still think refactoring/rewriting/re-implementing in lower level more efficient languages would be a huge win in terms of efficiency, and worthwhile. But maybe some of that can be automated to a degree?
It's dumbfounding to me that in the 21st century there are still so many companies that rely on what I would consider "time sharing" paradigms and pay for compute and bandwidth in ways that would have been obscenely expensive to the point of having bankrupted some past employers if they were not smarter about self hosting hardware and IXPs and peering (instead of relying on things such as AWS as alluded to in that writing or GCP or Azure and other, as bad, yet popular, alternatives in a day and age where economical libre/free open source hardware with CPUs measured in GHz exist in plurality and RAM in ranges of 8GB or more are being sold for mere hundreds of dollars, if that.).
But I guess, because it is profitable and easy for some to rely on centralized systems, rather than cultivate their own in house expertise? Such avarice and inefficiencies will continue to persist until more wise up?
Similarly, I am guessing it was very strategic that Micro$oft hired Guido van Rossum. It's not that Python is good. Not quite, PC gets hacked, on hacked machine someone does something like cd, but on that PC cd has been set up as an alias for some sort of command that downloads a malicious executable to the hackers machine and executed it.
That executable very well could be a keylogger, but doesn't necessarily have to be. It could be be rm -rf --no-preserve-root / or a reverse shell or whatever really.
I imagine cd would be a terrible choice to alias given how much it's used, but maybe something else more obscure could be used that is frequently used when bots/attackers are rummaging through files for stuff to steal.
Is there anything that is specific to ssh that would allow for this? Like a command that would allow something to execute back to the other machine similar to downloading? I'm not well versed just kind of a napkin idea I thought of.
Partially for sure. Other part of this would be somehow executing a command on the attackers machine that originated as their own input, but they wouldn't be privy to that due to the alias.
I've seen some videos where people will willingly let scammers into their machine, and Honeypot them with a file that they execute, typically named like credit card info or bank info or something. But they knowingly click that and open it, I don't know what needs to be done on the "make this code execute on the attackers machine" part.
If someone is ssh'd into your machine, are there any escalated privileges you'd already have back to their machine because they've willingly come to yours?
I kind of figured it would be a shot in the dark, some scripting could definitely be done to assess that, and even run code per major OS depending on some automated recon.
