@Carter Braxton does the word matter, or the thing itself ? People come to a place far from home to stay there. They're immigrants, by the definition of the word. Then there's the relationship they're building up (or not) with other people already here. Usually with several different mode of interaction simultaneously : some people assimilate with the autochtones, some live alongside them, some fight them, etc. Similarly autochtones may simultaneously accept some immigrants, reject some, fight some, etc.

I fail to see what particular value you seem to put in the word "invaders".

@Emmanuel Florac The world is not synonymous with the earth. The earth is the physical construct, the tangible, while the world involves the politics the infrastructures, the regulations and the bureaucracies.

One finds it amusing if not sometimes more annoying how Europeans, the original invaders of not only the New World, but Africa, Asia and the Middle East, pretend as if the United States upon its founding, started mistreating the natives.

Europeans love pretending as if they, including the pompous French, had no hand in the mistreating of their colonies of niggers in Africa, the native Americans in their American or Caribbean colonies and the Arabs in the Middle East where the also had colonies. It is as if they have selective memories.

Europeans seem to pretend to forget, that while many of them stayed at home, away from their colonies, they propped up and supported the regimes from their homes. It is time that they are reminded that pretending to have newly washed hands will not absolve them for their past or present selves either.

ICE arrests four people after they appear in immigration court

ICE agents arrested four people Thursday morning outside of immigration courtrooms in downtown San Francisco. Mission Local witnessed one of the arrests in the hallway outside of the courtrooms at 630 Sansome St., an ICE field office that contains some of San Francisco’s immigration courtrooms and a short-term detention facility. The man left the courtroom following his hearing. Mission Local saw him handcuffed in the hallway outside the courtroom, surrounded by ICE agents and the building’s security staff.

How come I've got my NVIDIA GPU to work for every game except Hogwarts Legacy? (More details in post body)

So, I have this new laptop I got which has an NVIDIA RTX 4090M GPU, and also an integrated Intel GPU. Obviously, I only want to use the Intel GPU for less intensive apps, and to use the NVIDIA GPU for games or other intensive applications, such as AI.

Through trial, error, and lucky searches on the internet, I figured out some things that do and don't work.

  • Plugging in the laptop makes the NVIDIA GPU run much faster
  • The default Fedora NVIDIA drivers work fine, I don't need to install any alternatives
  • To make a normal app use the GPU, all I have to do is right click the icon and click 'Launch with discrete GPU' (on GNOME), or to make it open with discrete GPU by default (and launching with the integrated GPU would be an option in the context menu), I have to copy the desktop file to ~/.local/share/applications, and edit the .desktop file so it contains the line PrefersNonDefaultGPU=true
  • For Steam apps, the previous method doesn't work (for some reason - maybe it uses a custom launch process?), but after trying many different ways, I was able to get most Steam apps to use the correct GPU (GPU 0) by adding the custom launch option PROTON_USE_WINED3D=0 %command%
  • For some reason, this doesn't work for Hogwarts Legacy. It, of all games, really wants to use the Intel graphics - even with the custom launch command, PrefersNonDefaultGPU=true, and in game setting the preferred GPU to my NVIDIA one - yes, it is listed and recognised in game - I can tell both from the Resources app and the abysmal performance that my NVIDIA GPU is not being used and my Intel GPU is
  • Other apps like Portal RTX, The Witcher 3, ComfyUI (running through Krita AI Diffusion), Blender, and Civilisation 6 are running great with the NVIDIA GPU
  • I do not have prime-run installed and do not need it

My laptop model is MEDION Beast X40.

I'm honestly at my wits end.

yesterday I learned that repositories on github can have a .github/README.md file which will be shown in place of the regular readme when people view the repository on github

this is really useful for all your projects you're moving github where you still want to temporarily leave a mirror behind; instead of changing the default branch you can just have it render the github-specific readme that explains the situation, but people cloning from git will still see all the regular content:

there's a lot to like about Tiddlywiki but not if you want to use it in a way where you aren't just using some background html file sync between devices. If you want to access it *via a website*, every time you load it you're downloading a minimum of 2MB, much larger depending on how much data you have in there and possibly even file embeds (unless you use the File upload plugin thing and have it dump the files into S3/WebDav)

This sucks big time. If you have spotty data service you won't be able to open your "notes" reliably.

This is a huge red flag for me. If I only cared about using Tiddlywiki from one device it would be a pretty amazing solution though

Study: When experienced open-source developers used current AI tools, work took 19% longer to complete. In spite of which, the developers *thought* they were working *faster.*

It’s just one study, and they don’t claim anything beyond what they observed. Their results are not predictive. Still....

(There must be a name for the psychological trick we play on ourselves to believe we’re being more productive even when we’re considerably less so.)
