idk, the idea of compounding Steam's already ridiculous 30% cut with a publisher cut on top of that feels like a recipe for getting bilked. But I'd be happy to be wrong.
The consensus seems to be that I'd probably be better served by hiring a PR firm than trying to go with a publisher. So I guess I'm doing some research this week, to see if I can find something that looks good, and that I can afford (which ain't much).
there are at least a few stories where it came to disputs related to publishing versions early on platforms agaist the will of the developer. Also they might stop early with any marketing if their numbers are not promising enough, and then its hard to get back out of the contract.
I've heard that a publisher usually isn't worth it unless the publisher has an active fanbase for a particular style of game that your game fits.
it's also possible to hire PR people, and then that way you're able to get more PR while still retaining full control and rights etc over your game, I can't say whether it's worthwhile or anything though because I've never been able to afford that.
i think we should just phase out all forms of welfare but still maintain some kind of homeless shelters where people can get help, sleep in a bed and get clean from drugs, and eat a nutritious meal
the public school system is mixed bag. some kids have really poor quality of life at home and so you can make a case for a public school system. there are good arguments for and against it
same with public hospitals. the government should operate networks of free clinics where people can get basic medical care like STD testing, antibiotics, wound care and so forth. it's important to control the spread of infectious disease, if nothing else, and prevent complications and reduce the burden on the private medical system
i can't fully get behind the total libertarian model where it's just every man for himself, because i have compassion for disadvantaged people. but we have to acknowledge that often people are poor because they make poor choices. simply giving them cash to spend and paying for all their needs is insane and unsustainable

Yes. It sounds awful but it's often necessary. If you just take everyone in it'll be massively overused by people who don't contribute and the people who do contribute will still pay off their ass for private because public is overcrowded and run down. This is what happened in Argentina, and we're now fixing by simply turning people who abused the system away.
At least at the start, if it stabilizes to the point resources and manpower are abundant for it without being a HUGE money drain, you can extend it. This is mostly a cultural thing though.
You can also just have a "this is the amount it costs, no charges past the real cost of the procedure" credit system like with foreigners, which would also solve this situation. If you're not qualified for the "free" treatment you can pay for it and use it.
@nerthos you didn't answer my question. i'm not talking about "people who abuse the system" i'm talking about a kid with a broken bone. an emergency. you're going to send a kid with a compound fracture away from your public clinic because his parents are behind on their taxes? that is barbaric and uncivilized.

I don't think it's reasonable to deny someone who's behind because of a bad year. I do think it's reasonable to deny someone who has never made any significant contribution their whole life.
@nerthos you can draw these lines in different ways and debate what sort of basic level of care should be available and to who, but anyway my original point was just that there are benefits to society to provide some basline level of care, like infection control and trauma care. just basic compassion that doesn't have to cost a lot of money but improves society overall.
whether an alcoholic bum on the street deserves a liver transplant, whether someone who is 90 years old should have a million dollars worth of heroic cancer treatment, whether a morbidly obese person should have a heart transplant, free diabetes treatment etc, those are debates i'm willing to have
I like this in theory. In practice, the private sector won't always pick up the slack (as I believe it should in these scenarios), or might have trouble reaching the people they'd like to help.

But the cost of private education has nearly doubled in the UK over the last few years. I give it 2 to 3 years before AI schools are springing up offering dedicated 1 to 1 tuition.

Almost 30 years has passed since Europe was shaken by the genocide of more than 8000 muslim boys and men in the Bosnian city of Srebrenica, at the hands of Bosnian Serb troops during an operation of ethnic cleansing, witnessed by UN peacekeeping troops who failed resoundingly in their protection mission.
In the midst of the conflict in the Balkans during the 1990’s, the small city of Srebrenica, in Eastern Bosnia, was established as a “safe area” by the UN for civilians fleeing fights between Bosnian government and separatist Serb forces, during the breakup of Yugoslavia.
