I think everyone has at least one thing they know they should get rid of but can't bring themselves to - and this is mine. It's a janky old oscilloscope I was planning to fix up and give to an old friend as a birthday present. It failed (catastrophically) at about the time he passed away, and every attempt I've made to fix it has failed.
Despite what some people might tell you, I do have a caring, somewhat sentimental side.

Ill say this . I just drove up to moms house to see how she and my sister were doing . They were fine just finished eating and getting ready to pray . I have dns-over-https proxies set up on my router, main one uses Hurricane Electric and the backup one — LibreDNS.gr It's presented as "normal" DNS server on port 53 UDP on local network. The router also does some caching. I don't have to rely neither on my ISP's DNS, nor on CloudFlare or Google — I really like this setup!

Yeah, still on track to sell about 1,000 units a day. If that trend continues, the run will sell out. Legitimately impressive if they pull that off, though I'd be surprised if it doesn't level off at some point before that.
I have what I'm calling "realistic expectations" for this particular product. I think it will be delivered, because it's all stuff that is in production now anyway and there's no point to taking money you'll just have to give back at the cost of your own reputation.
I think it'll be equivalent to a really good quality Ultimate 64, with nice mechanical keyboard. Other than that, it's just a good deal on what you get for the price, and a totally sensible first real product to get your company taken seriously.
It's not gonna change the world, it's not going to make the haters eat crow, but I think it'll be a product launch they pulled off, because they made sensible choices and reasonable promises.
And who knows, they might have something really cool in development, but nowhere near ready to show off. It's certainly possible -- there's real brainpower involved in this thing, not just a good showman and some pretty renders.
This is about how I feel about it, and I don't know what all the drama is. They took some existing, working products, plan to do some integration work, and are going to sell the package cheaper than you could buy the components, making up the difference (presumably, if they're good at what they do) in economies of scale. I don't necessarily want one, but it seems like a solid plan and a likely success, even if it turns into a one-hit wonder. (Which is OK, I think?)
@elb I think they're mad that Simpson might succeed, and make Commodore a going concern again. Not a big player, certainly, but with the investment as low as it is, they don't need to shake up the world to be a success.
I do anticipate there being some friction when the new Commodore International is forced to enforce their trademarks in order to keep them, but that's not new in the retrocomputing world, or for Commodore in particular, even. I will be interested to see how they navigate that, since one of the claimed goals is to license the Commodore name to people's individual retrocomputing projects, but in the meantime it's certainly not (to me) worse than some faceless corp.
For sure, but I think Simpson in particular will run into the (unfortunately common) issue that people think they "know him" because they've watched his YouTube videos, so they feel personally affronted when something he has isn't made available to them.
Maybe I'm overly cynical about that, but ... based on the second-hand griping I hear, I don't think so.
In the meantime, I haven't put up for one because I have several C64-compatible systems, but I watch with interest.

If Trump and the Republicans keeps up their current success with the economy then $13B in 2029 dollars will be about $3B in today’s money (the dollar lost around 15% of its value in the first six months of the current regime). If they accelerate (which looks likely, given their complete lack of understanding of how anything works), it could be much less.
Second, they’re selling to the US government, where Musk just fired everyone opposed to giving him money for things that don’t work. So it’s not like xAI actually needs to do anything valuable to be able to raise that revenue. If anything, that would make it worse, because then people would use it (which costs money to xAI), whereas if they just sign large contracts to provide a service that no one uses then revenue equals profit.
