You could legitimately make a fortune by parking outside of the DMV in a van with an inkjet printer, charging $5/page to people trying to get REALIDs who've been told they need to produce a printout of yet another bill or bank statement for the clerk to glance at and then shred.
When I moved the other year, I was required to get a new driver's license within 30 days. One of the valid forms of proof of address was a utility bill.
How I was supposed to move, set up a new utility account, and get a bill within 30 days was not explained.
@cptbutton I'm in more or less that situation now. I lost my wallet, and with it my driving licence, which was the only photo id I had which was valid for applying for... A replacement driving licence. As I live off grid, I also don't have a utility bill. So far I've been unable to find any form of photo id I can apply for without photo id or utility bills which is valid for applying for a driving licence.

The person being served next to me was an Afghan translator who had been one of the few to have been granted asylum during the Afghanistan military withdrawal, and the poor clerk had to tell this poor man that he couldn't get a RealID.

I went to papersplease.org to read why it was I had resolved so firmly not to get one fifteen years ago. @jaredj @citizenAlex @mitch the only people who really can't fly in US without a Real ID are these who cannot get a (biometric?) passport. While it's a bit more convenient to carry a card instead of a passport, the other benefits seem to be absent. (Needless to say, such people exist, and I suppose US has millions of them, but, still, what is the point?)

It's wild that when this happened to me at the (notoriously difficult!!) Chinese consulate, I had to get out of line, but they had an inkjet printer so my visa application went through. I have privacy based reasons to not get a Real ID (people can call me paranoid all they want). However, I noticed that my experience trying to get a passport (brand new one, never gotten a passport before) was far easier than my attempt to humor getting a California Real ID based Drivers Liscense.
...and I say this as one of those people who has fallen between the cracks in bureaucracy before.

Honestly, this is the most depressingly viable business idea I’ve heard all week. The DMV says “bring proof,” but not on your phone, not emailed ahead, not faxed, but physically printed in triplicate, blessed by a notary, and presented at dawn. $5/page for the privilege of navigating their Kafkaesque gauntlet? People would pay it gratefully.

maybe not a fortune, but people literally make a living that way in Mexico. I sorta had to do it for a new passport years ago. Also, more recently, I needed a printout for national ID correction and last week for something for our revenue office, bought a USB key from a.person outside so they could copy a digital certificate
maryland made all of their IDs REALIDs like 15 years ago, after the law went into effect. i dont remember doing anything special to get it, i just went and renewed my driver's license and it was REAL

I've just finished reading _Technofeudalism_ by Yanis Varoufakis. If he's right, then it's politically urgent to escape from the clutches of Meta, Google, Amazon and the like as soon as possible.
Varoufakis' arguments reminded me of _Chokepoint Capitalism_ by Rebecca Giblin and @pluralistic, though according to Varoufakis the dominance of Amazon and the like has killed off capitalism and is a form of feudalism. I still want to compare these two analyses more carefully.
But Varoufakis' argument is: these platforms have managed to lure people in to work for them for free, and with every post and update on their platforms, these exploitative and massively dangerous companies grow stronger and harder to defeat. On the other hand, if the people take back social media and the internet more generally, there's a real opportunity for building a counter-movement with these technologies.
The lesson I take from this: getting people to quit the capitalist platforms and join the #Fediverse is part of political organisation, and possibly an important part if you consider the way people are tethered to their Instagram and Tiktok.
Let me repeat this: Convincing and helping comrades to quit the capitalist platforms and join the Fediverse is an important form of revolutionary political organisation. ✊

I brought all the documents I thought I would need to renew my license and get a #RealID in the process.
Clerk looked at my current license, looked at my passport, and said "All set."
So my wife went to renew and brought her passport only, and had to come get a utility bill.
Somehow this was my fault. 😂
