in reply to anonymiss

@anonymiss A criticism is not a critique. In order for a critique to mean anything it has to have a foundation. To build a foundation requires an approach to approaches. To want to do anything requires feelings, unless one is a robot.

You are not a robot, so you have feelings. The practical is actually pure reason, only in reverse.
We are people without a foundation, and so our critiques are replaced with criticisms.
Because so many people are walking around with purity on the outstretched hand
and a practical slice of cake sliding down the gullet.
Endless criticism on the assumption of purity of values
leads to emotional actions, which lead to one of two options:
divided and conquered or fighting and divided.

But where is the purity?
I say we need an approach to approaches,
not to run away, but also not to take lightly.

Lightness is for non-anonymity,
for the reality of the impure
which is where our purity can shine
having so many more senses
than the propositional purity of words.

I seek the middle way.
In lieu of a foundation, we can begin building one here.
An online sanga is already there 😀

For me, this is always what #hashtags were for.
There's always more room for a critique, but the friendships we build along the way define this world's sphere of values.
And as long as that sphere is just a slop mediated by media companies, we will never be able to build, for we lack a foundation which reflects us: otherwise our words mean very little, just reflecting our lack of developed senses in the real world.

We can begin by asking, what do real friends need to be friends?
Then we can ask, how can we provide people with the means to be friends?
And finally we can enjoy the social network...
But until and unless we have a shared foundation with robust terms...
I'm afraid it will be endless criticism because no one is bothered to form a(nother) critique.

I don't often quote Counterfire, but:

"Britain has many options for acting, such as:

* Supporting and enforcing the International Court of Justice rulings against Netanyahu and other Israeli ministers.
* Expelling Israeli diplomats.
* Inviting Israeli opposition leaders to meet with Britain and other countries to draw up a peace proposal.
...
* Calling a summit with EU member states to impose sanctions on Israel"

Letter From Jakhi McCray to the Movement

It has been one month since the NYPD and the U.S. government came after me, accusing me of setting fire to police vehicles belonging to the 83rd precinct in Brooklyn. According to them, $800,000 worth of damage was done and the charred remains of the vehicles represented a direct attack on the police.

Today, July 21st, I walked into the 83rd precinct and turned myself in.

There’s a real chance that I won’t see the outside of a cell for years, but I make this choice clear of mind and, in a naive way, hopeful. It’s a hope that comes from feeling loved and supported by my friends, my family, and my comrades that have rallied in support of me in wake of the accusations. It’s a feeling that I cherish and will hold on to in the, now uncertain timeline of my life.

I’m 21 years old and I know it’s normal to be unsure about life and the world, but I want to thank you -whether l know you or you’re just meeting me for the first time now- forgiving me some comfort in all this.

My charge comes with a minimum sentence of five years and a maximum of 20. The federal government has labeled me “armed and dangerous” and blasted a $30,000 bounty for my capture, which Zionist and white supremacist news outlets have happily supported in their racist doxxing and smear campaign against me.

My home has been raided alongside two other addresses in New York City, and my little siblings had assault rifles brandished at them as they were harassed and forced outside.

I’m not, nor was I ever, scared. This scare tactic is nothing compared to other black people that are beaten and/or murdered, and their names being dragged through the mud as the media does damage control for the officers that did it. It’s not new to Palestinians and Arabs that are being assassinated, deported, and harassed. I’ve met immigrants that live under daily paranoia, not knowing whether or not ICE goons will bust through their doors and kidnap their families.

I’ve been arrested 12 times before this, and doxxed and lied about by fascist press and police officers alike. I’ve seen friends and comrades lose relationships, homes, and jobs because of their refusal to be responsible for the genocide in Palestine and the kidnapping of migrants.

The SCC61, the CUNY8, the Prarieland1 1, the 2020 prsioners, Tarek Barzouk, Leqaa Kordia-all just a few current examples of the the government’s attempt to regain control. The use of COINTELPRO and its domestic warfare campaign that left hundreds of dead and imprisoned revolutionaries throughout the 20th century and now has caused a memory crater in our movement, where we don’t know to how to handle the brutality of State repression.

Repression is the State trying to call our bluff. It is intense because it shows itself when our potential to disrupt genocides and capital becomes too grand to ignore. Millions of people, whether they consider themselves revolutionaries or not, that participated in the encampments, the anti-ICE street rebellions, and the George Floyd Uprising have helped create a social crisis in the last five years that continues to bring in millions more and fuel the need for liberation.

The constant effort it takes the State to oppress us is not manageable. It is already breaking, with the funding and hiring disasters in federal agencies, the infighting between the Trump administration and his base, and the complete political catastrophe over Israel.

The harshness of the State’s eye on our movement is nothing more than a defensive reaction, a mask from their fear. This is as much of a make or break moment for them as it is for us. If we come out of this with our solidarity and our infrastructure intact, it is a monumental win for our communities and a devastation to our enemies.

Our greatest strength is each other-that we are not just coworkers maintaining appearances for the duration of a shift. We are comrades, and with that comes a promise to love, defend, and fight for one another. Because you are my comrades, I hold this promise towards all of you.

I don’t know what will happen now, but I do know that I will never stop fighting and I will do my best wherever I find myself to be.

With love and solidarity, Jakhi

With itch now censoring porn games, I kind of want to restart work on that one indie game hosting site that I was working on, but I really hate working with databases and if I want to include payment, I would have to do it with crypto, which I have no experience from a dev standpoint, and I would have to do a bunch of research on the current legality of crypto in various parts of the world.
in reply to xianc78

Though I think the best and long-term solution is to just create a web framework that allows people to self host their games while also providing payment options without having to implement that stuff manually.

Like I said earlier, I don't think porn games will go away. They have always been niche and most of them were self-hosted for this very reason. Games like Sociolotron required you to purchase the game directly from their website. Other games were purchased via mail-order. I think we will simply go back to the former.

More than 100 aid groups warn Gaza is starving

Over 100 humanitarian organizations, led by #Oxfam, say their own staff now queue for food amid Israel’s siege. Supplies sit unused, as daily distributions average just 28 trucks. They call for all crossings opened, UN-led aid restored, an immediate ceasefire and end to the blockade.

[...] Governments must stop waiting for permission to act. We cannot continue to hope that current arrangements will work. It is time to take decisive action: demand an immediate and permanent ceasefire; lift all bureaucratic and administrative restrictions; open all land crossings; ensure access to everyone in all of Gaza; reject military-controlled distribution models; restore a principled, UN-led humanitarian response and continue to fund principled and impartial humanitarian organizations. States must pursue concrete measures to end the siege, such as halting the transfer of weapons and ammunition.

He is right. Why is nobody acting? Fakhri explains, how it would be possible. I also was interested to read that he realized Israel's intention to starve Gaza on the 9th October 2023 - most of the world ignored their clear intentions then.

fact-checking: binary blobs remain, and keep getting added to Linux. there's a new one in the pipeline for 6.16. disgusting as this is, I have to find them, because I maintain a blob-free version of the kernel Linux.

I have no objections to allowing users to make their self-defeating choices. my objection is to imposing those losers' choices on people, and to fooling users that pursue freedom by offering them something that's proprietary.

misrepresenting nonfree software as free is not conducive towards this ideal world, it's rather a means to deny people the pursuit of that world. you may be right that limiting support is unfriendly, but you shouldn't misrepresent who's being unfriendly in that picture: is it that who's setting things up to control users by chaining them, or is it that who's trying to protect them from being chained? is the unfriendly person that who tells the abused person not to go back to the abuser's home?

in reply to Alexandre Oliva

@lxo @SuperDicq It is, but what's your option then?

Do you honestly think companies will submit to Linux and release stuff without blobs? Of course not.

The main reason companies do binary blobs is because patents involved. Sometimes from their side, sometimes legal obligations from 3rd parties. Innovation is unlikely free of patents.

The alternative basically means the same output from any GNU Linux distro, mostly nerds who use old laptops modified by Leah Rowe with no WiFi or some old ath9k.

when it comes to corporations with publicly-traded stocks, it depends significantly on the size of the market they'd be giving up

as long as people tolerate abuse, and abuse is conducive to their increase of profits, they will do that

when it gets to a point in which lots of people can't stand the abuse and, more importantly, start rejecting enshittified products for real, a market opportunity arises for those who respect users. that's one way for consumers to drive the market towards respecting freedom, because ultimately what the suppliers are interested in are the profits. I acknowledge that it's one of those tricky collective action issues, but it's one that may emerge out of consumers' acting intelligently on their own interest

another way to go about it is by regulation. if regulators demand respect for users, suppliers may scream, but will eventually comply (or buy the regulators' heads, the cynic in me points out 😉

blobs due to patents are a convenient excuse, but it's a lie. reverse engineering is not that hard, and it would uncover patent infringements, if market leaders didn't have cross-licensing agreements among them. the roadblock for reverse engineering is that regulations prohibit using the results of reverse engineering in cases that would make them interesting and useful

CC: @Suiseiseki@freesoftwareextremist.com @SuperDicq@minidisc.tokyo

in reply to SuperDicq

@SuperDicq @lxo I don't disagree with your statement, but that is unrealistic into the 99.9% of people.

I'm not saying you are wrong with your goals honestly speaking, but most people are OK with binary blobs as long they don't sniff your files or send data elsewhere.

So far, the only dangerous active threat is the Intel MEI/AMT or AMD PSP, which are known to potentially use people hardware without consent. Every other single piece of hardware can be successfully tracked in case they do nasty stuff.

Also, I do also understand the binary blob creates some programmed obsolescence as community can't effectively fix bugs, but some can be fixed from the software layer (at expense of performance)

in reply to WalterKühl

the larger freedom problem in blob updates is that they're a vector for enshittification, inasmuchas they enable suppliers to push "security" updates onto users bundled with enshittifying features. see fsfla.org/~lxoliva/#Unshittify

but the problem is how they attack our freedom. a partner that "behaves nicely" as long as you "behave", but that prevents you from learning, developing, growing, helping and getting help from your community is an abusive partner. a software supplier that offers software that does just what you expect, but that won't allow you to make changes if you so wish, with or without help from your community, is analogously an abusive supplier
