If I'm in the lead on a morning trail, I usually find a long stick and just wave it up and down as I walk. There is a species of spider out here that builds webs just at human head height, right in the middle of the trail.
Yeah that's my procedure as well. I'm amazed at the distances they can span. As I look ahead if I see one high enough with no obvious low anchors I'll carefully duck under it. Those anchor lines are strong!
One thing that has surprised me around our porches is that if I end up destroying an active web I often see what is clearly the same spider (name tag) having put up her next web in a slightly different position. In the evening our deck walkway is now surrounded by big webs that leave a clear pathway between our commonly used doors.
Okay, so what do birds do? Flying through the woods they must end up covered with web.
The other night there was a bunch of those nasty big yellow and black hornets buzzing around the walkway. I thought shit, they're looking to build one of their nests here.
I haven't seen them flying around since then and the next morning there were more than a few of them lying dead on the deck. I'm convinced the girls were catching them in their webs, killing them, and dropping them to the deck.
