@mischievoustomato it genuinely does have one of the strictest driving tests, and the drivers are actually some of, if not the best, in the world

Great video showing what it’s like:

Hi, academics,
I have a question that is somewhat important for understanding the treatment of some untenured folks at a university.

This question is specifically aimed for academics who are working in a country where they are not citizens: How much, if any, assistance did/does your university provide with your necessary visa requirements? (I was going to do a poll but its probably too fine-grained of answers.)

Please share if relevant!

Your not going to find many people with PhDs teaching at a University on here because people are on here because they are censored

People with PhDs teaching at Universities are unwilling to say the words that would get them censored otherwise they would have already lost their jobs

So they are more likely not to be here than the average person with internet access if they are employed at a University

I have a dumb question about the fediverse.
Suppose someone makes their own personal instance. Federation is opt-in? So they have to click a button for each of the seemingly thousands of mastodon instances to get them on their "global" feed?
Or it's opt out, so they start with a hellscape of Nazi instances and have to remove them one by one?
And do the other instances have to also opt in? Are the admins of every instance needing to do something every time a new instance comes online?

If you create a
poa dot st
nicecrew dot digital
or
merovingian dot club

profile

Then
When you log in

If you click on home you see the individuals you followed

If you click on federated you see everyone you have not blocked and or muted in all federations that your federation instance has not blocked and or muted

If you click on local you see what everyone in your federation instance posted who you have not blocked and or muted

Not sure if you create your own federation instance

I have always been amazed as to how people think that slaves could build everything in the past

How can they not understand that U would need skilled masters and craftsmen for everything

U can not force random people to suddenly become masters of all trade

U would also need Ur workers to be motivated to apply themselves for such complicated tasks

As a carpenter, mason, it is obvious by looking that the cathedrals were built by workers who took pride in their work

shortstories reshared this.

@Bernard
That said. In ancient civilizations slaves were not living in cages and chained.

Yes that happened too. But a slave was a property, an investment. If U were wise U would take good care of Ur slaves just as U would take good care of Ur horse.

In Babylon for example the slaves were more or less free, except they could not choose their masters. They were bound to work for their owner.

And after the slave contract was ended they often choose to stay and keep at it.

@cyclopentane, buy instead an FairPhone with /e/OS and say good bye to Google. All made in the EU

FairPhone (Murena Phone), is modular, you can fix and replace all the pieces, without taking it to a workshop.

@emory@soc.kvet.ch The 2nd Amendment has no citzenship requirement. Now that would be interesting if we started arming all undocumented people. ---

Morning y'all :neocat_wave:
So in this age of people not really talking or communicating I, like many, have struggled to make friends (esp after transitioning). I've been an active fedizen for some time now, and I love the community here, but I've frequently struggled to make close connections.

As a fledging artist I'd love to make more connections with other creatives and cool people that I know are on here. So I figured I would make (and pin) this post as an open invitation for friends, for peers, for moots, for gamers, for silly queer people on the Internet to slide into my DMs :neocat_laugh:
Maybe it's dumb to put myself out there like this, but at this point I don't much care about being dumb online lol. I'll happily take the risk if it means meeting cool people and making friends.

LLMs are going out of style

"Here we lay out the position that small language models (SLMs) are sufficiently powerful, inherently more suitable, and necessarily more economical for many invocations in agentic systems, and are therefore the future of agentic AI."

I've got a nerd #AskFedi question, expectations are high since we are on the Fediverse 😘

Situation: I’ve tagged mothers keys with bluetooth trackers. I hate this stuff, but she’s suffering from dementia and I also need some sleep. I'm using android trackers, e.g. the Google Find Hub. I hate this too.
#Caregiving #Alzheimers #Dementia

Question: How can I improve the bloody “home tracking abilities” of these #%#@! trackers on Google Find network?

I need “something” inside my mothers house, actively/periodically checking the nearby devices and report them to the Google Find Network.

Currently latest report is often hours old and often sent by devices in the neighbourhood.

I’m thinking about:
- Obsolete android always-on-phone
- Raspberry pi with a bluetooth module

I could use some tips on how to achieve this with the little free time I have..

Belarusian Railways chief explains changes in cargo logistics eng.belta.by/economics/view/be…

The Stockman became the most popular pattern of the 20th century, much more common than the Congress.

The Congress was most popular in the American South and spread from there across the nation. The Stockman was most popular in the American West and spread from there across the nation.

Here are the timeframes of three modern traditional knife patterns.

The stout bolstered Barlow is the oldest being developed and popularized in the 1600s by Sheffield knife makers in industrializing England. It's been popular throughout the world since.

The 4 bladed Congress first became popular in the American South, with agricultural workers, merchants and plantation owners, Cotton & Tobacco in the 1820s-1840s.

The 3 bladed Stockman hit the scene and first became popular in the American West after the War of Northern Aggression...with cattle ranchers and cowboys. So around the 1870s.

hrm, only two mentions of "Where did the towers go" found when searching corbertt's site...

startpage.com/do/search?q=site…

and both of those are merely in the comments. [for fairness, presumably he'll have referenced it in videos often, without it appearing in searchable text... right?]

The idea to search that, came from seeing his face included amongst the gatekeepers, in a MES presentation. (link at end of post)

He is indeed "this far, no further" more than you might guess initially from watching his stuff.

It's like I've been saying for... idk, over 20 years now surely...

In a sea of misinformation, everybody's a shill. ... and some more than others.

#TheCorberttReport #MathsEasySolutions

(PS, if you're not familiar with the MES chap... Basically, he's an engineer, who believed the official narrative of 9/11, until challenged on it, to do the maths... he did the maths, had his "THERE'S NO WAY!" moment, and since then has been doing various streams, some on his usual maths and engineering stuff as prior, but also now liberally peppered with episodes exploring the maths, physics, engineering, materials science, video and photo evidence, first witness reports, etc, which is interesting to have the implausibilities laid out with a little more robus maths and engineering background than you might typically find in those most vocal about it... And has even had on guests (iirc) like Dr Judy Wood (of "Where did the towers go?" authorship fame) and Michael Hutchison (of The Hutchison Effect fame)).

(PPS,
here's that ep of MES

)

(PPPS ... On a completely unrelated note... I still dont know how to fit a 757 in a pentagon shaped hole. ;D )

If this knife tickles your fancy, you can pick it up off of eBay, Brand New in Box for $10.95 plus tax shipped on this link.

Troublesome Creek Congress with Amber Jigged Bone Scales

The Congress pattern is not as old as the Barlow but older than the Stockman. Popular with Tobacco and Cotton farmers, tradesmen and plantation owners.
