Everyone has been galvanized, in condemning Epstein. It's been comforting to assume this means there is wider recognition that sexual exploitation through money and power of young vulnerable people is seen as criminal. A violation of self-determination and of bodily autonomy.
I think part of why I keep following this story so closely is the creeping sense that maybe we aren't all talking about the same thing.

I sadly do not agree with your assumption. Like #metoo, I believe this will be swept away. I think there is some frustration with everyone's non-favorite elites being able to act with impunity, but they still want to excuse their faves
And I think those of us who actually give a shit about the victims is a vanishingly small percentage

We absolutely are not. People like you and me are talking about the widespread sexual exploitation of women and girls, and how fucked up it is that this is embedded in our culture, and how Epstein is an exemplar of but ultimately just another symptom of that. MAGA world is talking about Pizzagate. QAnon shit. It never went away, they just got better at sounding normal when talking about it.

I remember some comments I heard during his first presidency (where he wasn't a nice guy to begin with) from voters with a Christian Nationalist leaning to the tune of: "He may not represent our Christian values, but he will get us what we want."
Well, he did and he will certainly try and continue to do so if he keeps his free reign.

So far, there seems to be a concerted effort to protect the "Victims" And, culturally, the victims are defined as the fucking politicians who fear their consequences are not only political but indictable.

I was a reporter in the late 90s and covered the Clinton impeachment and it was so wrong. He was guilty and should have been removed, but, it was the wrong charge. He was illegally harassing his employees. But to charge him with that would have exposed the rest of Congress to the same standard. So they had to keep it narrowly on “he cheated on his wife.”

that would fit, if so, yeah. it's been absolutely astonishing to us to see that the people who've consistently voted for these atrocities and cheered them when they happen, actually seem to have sincere beliefs that aren't just what their favorite commentator is saying that week. like, it's not as if CSA is normally a dealbreaker to far-right voters, so we've been confused that it appears to be in this case.

The hint that this could all unravel comes from the relative indifference of large segments of the public to the obvious womanizing, sexism, and public lechery of the president.
