I got on LinkedIn because someone told me it was the โ€œprofessional thing to doโ€ after retirement.

Big mistake.

This place is a digital motor pool full of self-appointed visionaries doing donuts in the mud, yelling about scaling, optimizing, and disrupting, while actively failing to comprehend anything larger than their own reflection in a ring light.

Every day I open this app and itโ€™s someone bragging about how they โ€œfired their entire team at 6:45 a.m. to protect the cultureโ€ and then went on a ten-mile gratitude walk before raising $4 million from investors who apparently also hate due diligence.

You people are feral.

Youโ€™re not leading a company. Youโ€™re cosplaying a personality disorder and calling it leadership.

Every post reads like a man with a Bluetooth headset screamed into a word cloud and hit โ€œpublish.โ€

โ€œI was boarding a plane when I saw a janitor smiling. That janitor was my first employee. I gave him equity. That janitor is now our COO. Never forget to believe in people.โ€

What in the fever dream did I just read?

Nobodyโ€™s humble anymore. They just say โ€œHumbled to announceโ€ right before delivering a victory lap and tagging 19 people who havenโ€™t talked to them since the Bush administration.

Iโ€™ve seen better self-control in a barracks full of privates with an unlocked liquor cabinet.

LinkedIn reminds me of early days on Hacker News and here on Reddit. Social media doesn't reflect the world of tech, or even startup tech.

Social media gives outsized attention to certain types of extroverted people, and it gives outsized attention to controversy and confirmation of bias relative to correctness or depth of experience.

@Donald J. Trump My take, public money shouldn't go into unreliable infrastructure, but if private money wants to go there fine. I've generally been opposed to win/solar except in cases where it reliably corresponds with peak loads, A/C loads in California/Texas/Florida and Solar would be a case in point, otherwise it is mostly a waste. At some point perhaps we'll have a practical, economic, and sufficient storage capacity but right now isn't that time.

There was a stretch of time around 2019 and into 2020 when it felt like we were living in a genuinely global revolutionary moment. The Sudanese Revolution toppled Omar al-Bashir. Palestinians marched on the Gaza boundary wall. There were mass protests in Iraq and Iran, Chile and Hong Kong. Donald Trump had to hide in the White House bunker.

It felt like something might actually *happen.*

Formaldehyde is not an artificial preservative. It is also produced by the human body and we require small amounts of it to live. It is a product in the important process of the methane cycle.

Outside of niche research chemicals, one of the most dangerous psychoactive drugs is datura, also known as deadly nightshade. It's a delierient in the same class as PCP. It's commonly said that using one seed's worth will cause you to black out and wake up in either the hospital or jail, if you wake up at all, and it's fully legal to grow in your windowsill.

"Natural" does not mean "good for you".

in reply to Hoggrim ๐Ÿ—

@Hoggrim ๐Ÿ— Right, sorry, yes, deadly nightshade is a different plant. I was thinking of nightshades as a group.

The language I'm using is coming from talking with psychonauts, not any anti-drug program. Support groups for people who use recreational substances talk about the benefits and dangers openly, and datura is frequently placed atop lists of the most dangerous substances one can take. The leaves are less psychoactive than other parts of the plant, particularly the seeds.

When I set up #Proxmox VE I installed all my nodes with stupid partitioning and now the new version is out and I don't have enough space on root to install the update. I also named my ZFS pool "zfs" like a dumb dumb. I have to reinstall to fix my partitioning so I can update and while I'm there I want to use the default, sensible, ZFS pool name of "rpool".

Problem is all my VM's have a storage called "zfs" in their config files and I don't want to edit all of them and I don't want the name of the storage to differ from the name of the ZFS pool. I also don't want any downtime so I don't want to back up and restore the whole lot. My firewall is a VM, it sounds like a pain. Plus my firewall is a VM so if I re-create the cluster from scratch and restore the VM's I have a lot of networking config to re-import.

I mulled all this over for two hours tonight before remembering I have shared storage so none of this matters. Shift the VM's to that, reinstall one node at a time (restoring cluster config as I go), done.

in reply to Apicultor ๐Ÿ

@apicultor On the one hand, that's what a homelab's for. But on the other I have a lot of important (to me and my wife) stuff running on it and I'm about to go on holiday for two weeks. This job still needs doing, but I might install 8.4 then it's ready for an in-place upgrade when I get back. Or just go straight to 9.0. I haven't decided yet. I like shiny new things.

I'm losing weight, slowly, but I'm losing. I'm not going to convert pounds to kilograms anymore, because it seems like a lot of pounds, and then I convert them to kilograms and it's not as much as I thought, and then I get sad. I have to be careful not to obsess. The nutritionist told me I'm almost on the verge of having an eating disorder after I explained some things to her. It's hard to fight your own brain
