Go for it! Even the old Haswell mini tower I'm using as a Proxmox host has plenty of power to run OPNsense with IDS and the works, several times over. Make sure you're using VirtIO as the network driver and SCSI as the disk type or your IOwait will shoot through the roof; I found this out the hard way.
