My ebooks and audiobooks (from Tor Books, Head of Zeus, McSweeneys, Beacon, Verso and others) are for sale all over the net, but I sell 'em too, and when you buy 'em from me, I earn twice as much and you get books with no DRM and no license "agreements."

a) That was Target; and
b) The trick was *very* simple - they sent pregnancy ads to anyone who started buying folic acid, a supplement recommended to women in the early stages of pregnancy, and rarely to anyone else.
Sorta like sending ads for baseballs to people who've bough a catcher's mitt and a bat - but Target *and* its critics spun it as evidence of the amazing insights of "Big Data."

in reply to Cory Doctorow • • •The surveillance changes more than the price. If the customer is rich or desperate enough, the system will jack the price up indeed. But if the customer is poor and not willing to pay, the system will then present junk which is cheaper to manufacture.
The system always optimizes profit taken from the customer's pockets.
