@zdl indeed, I find Americans tend to have an infantile view of the world where everything has to be black and white. The west are the good guys, and everyone who opposes the west is by definition Hitler. There is no room for any nuance.

@zdl I definitely agree there's a religious dimension to the whole thing. Americans built up this idea of being the shining city on the hill, and the indefensible nation, and all that. People genuinely believe that the US is somehow special.
