The BBC is now reporting that Meta has been censoring pro-Palestinian content. This is why I implore people to stop demanding more social media censorship - it has led to the abetting of genocide. We do not need censorship - we need more control over the content we see and who we interact with.

You might've heard this week that the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA) is back as its authors try to force a new version through in a must-pass end of year spending bill.

KOSA proponents include Elon Musk + the Heritage Foundation, who’ve openly shared their plans to use KOSA to censor LGBTQ+ content. Now, with Andrew Ferguson appointed as the new FTC Chair that threat is more real than ever.

Save this link and use it to keep making as much noise about this as possible this week to block this bill:

After 16 Years in Prison, Holy Land Five Member Mufid Abdulqader Has Been Released

After 16 years behind bars, Mufid Abdulqader, a member of the “Holy Land Five” has been released from prison into a halfway house. The Palestinian American is slated to spend one year at the facility.

The case of the Holy Land 5 has become a symbol of the unconstitutional overreach associated with U.S. counterterrorism since 9/11.

In 2009, five Palestinian-American Muslims received prison sentences as a result of their work with the Holy Land Foundation (HLF) charity. Prosecutors claimed that HLF funneled money to Hamas and charged the men with “material support for terrorism,” as the United States has designated Hamas as a “Foreign Terrorist Organization.”

Abdulqader received a 20-year prison sentence. Mohammad el-Mezain and Abdulrahman Odeh were given 15 years. Ghassan Elashi and Shukri Abu Baker, 65 years.

Odeh was released from prison in 2021. El-Mezain was released from detention in 2022 before being deported to Turkey.

The Holy Land 5 received a criminal trial in 2007, which didn’t result in a single guilty verdict but the case was controversially deemed a mistrial. The judges in both allowed key evidence to be provided by two anonymous Israeli witnesses, an Israeli Security Agency employee and a Israeli Defense Forces intelligence officer.

The Israeli government and pro-Israel groups had been pressuring the U.S. government to target the HLF for years. In 2001 the Washington Post reported that then-Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon had called on then-President George W. Bush to move against the HLF during an Oval Office meeting:

Administration officials said that during an Oval Office meeting on Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon asked Bush to move against the Holy Land Foundation, and the president speedily obliged. “We — bam — did it,” a senior official said.

After blocking the bank accounts of the organization Bush addressed reporters in a Rose Garden ceremony. “Those who do business with terror will do no business with the United States — or anywhere else the United States can reach,” he declared. “The net is closing. Today it just got tighter.”

The men’s appeal was denied and the testimony of the anonymous Israeli witnesses was deemed “harmless.” A decision that HLF lawyer John Cline called, “The most ridiculous, dishonest, indefensible call by a federal court I ever saw in my life.”

Earlier this year the Palestine advocacy group Samidoun launched a Week of Action to free the Holy Land 5 and mark 15 years since their sentencing and conviction.

“From the initial attacks on the Holy Land Foundation, to the raids of the homes and offices, to the eventual convictions – these actions were all in an attempt to stop the Holy Land Foundation’s continued support of the Palestinian people,” wrote Samidoun Network organizer Salma Al Nour at Mondoweiss. “They were providing Palestinians with essential and life-saving resources and care that they needed in order to continue to remain steadfastly in their homes in the face of occupation and displacement by the Israeli government.”

“The story of the Holy Land Five and its destruction at the hands of the United States and Israeli governments is unique in the nature of these specific events, but not its essence,” she continued. “Distilled, it is a simple story of Palestinian survival, self-determination, and joy – three things that Palestinian are not allowed to have, at least not today, in the United States or in Occupied Palestine. However, through their steadfastness, struggle, and refusal to give up on life and freedom – the Holy Land 5 have dared to take these things anyway.”

“It’s no surprise that fascists and science-deniers want to ban masks from protests. But it’s alarming that supposedly progressive lawmakers are helping them do it,” - @evangreer

Ken Klippenstein

What there seems to be plenty of doubt about is what U.S. personnel are even in Syria and where. The U.S. government hates talking about its military footprint throughout the Middle East. When three U.S. troops were killed in Jordan earlier this year, many Americans were surprised that there was even a base near the Syrian border. The U.S. government had never before officially acknowledged the base, nor the mission. Secrecy over American military deployments is out of control and prevents the American public from meaningfully participating in discussion of our foreign policy.

Independence day in Helsinki has been a day of labor for antifascists now for years. Actual nazis have been marching on the streets and, well, that has to be protested. Police violence has increased during the past years. This year, for example, there were barking and restless dogs in line looking like they might be set off free at any moment.

This year the police had protected the nazis’ square by fences so that only nazis could get through. The others were violently pushed from the surrounding streets and sidewalks. The police moved early and straight away with violence.

The number of police officers was flabbergasting. Were there any police officers anywhere else in the country?

As before, there were more antifascists than fascists. As before, the police protected the nazis from protest and were violent against peaceful protesters, some very young. As before, they used horses as weapons. What was new was that a member of parliament was there with the nazis. And the dogs were new. Was this the first real life training day for them and when they’re a bit further advanced they’ll be let loose on people?

Police brutality scares people and that is its objective, of course. Increasing police violence might escalate into fatalities. With this rate, the current government, the nazi rise etc. it might be closer than i’m willing to believe.

I’ll go over my pics and videos and post some of them below. Might take a while (maybe tomorrow to complete) since they’re not easy to watch. Don’t watch them at all if you’re sensitive to violence. Do watch them if you think the police is your friend. Might post many vids of the poor dogs and horses. They broke my heart 💔

@zdl indeed, I find Americans tend to have an infantile view of the world where everything has to be black and white. The west are the good guys, and everyone who opposes the west is by definition Hitler. There is no room for any nuance.
@zdl I definitely agree there's a religious dimension to the whole thing. Americans built up this idea of being the shining city on the hill, and the indefensible nation, and all that. People genuinely believe that the US is somehow special.

It's hard to comprehend the sheer depravity of the west now actively pushing to force teenagers into fighting their proxy war. Everybody who is cheering this shit on really needs to take a long hard look in the mirror.

@draNgNon That’s not a choice: they’re a German company and bound by the laws of Germany. The broad US definition of “free speech” does not apply in Europe (though in its stead they have the European Convention on Human Rights), and in Germany in particular, anything touching on antisemitism (as defined by the IHRA definition) is legally liable.

I was on mastodon.social and felt censored - I couldn't prove it but I had the impression that toots for solidarity with #Palestine and criticising #Israel weren't distributed in the way I was used to.

I moved to kolektiva.social and aside from enjoying not to be limited to 500 characters per toot it actually feels more relaxed and less restrictive there.

The thing about German laws is that you are allowed in many cases to speak out more than the repressive atmosphere in society makes you believe. If you have a reputation and career to lose it's recommendable to shut up about all things #genocide in #Gaza, but otherwise you may follow your heart a rather long way without being legally investigated or indicted.

The intimidation strategy of the government can be studied exemparily with the resolution
"Never again now: to shelter, sustain and strengthen Jewish Life in Germany"
accepted with a great majority in parlament two weeks ago.

It identifies critique of Israel generally with #antisemitism without implementing direct consequences for the perpetrator because it's not legally binding. At the same time the resolution recommends to take repressive measures against any kind of antisemitism which of course is and has always been endemic in about 15 percent of German population.

The trick now is that they give several practical examples for antisemitism in the resolution which mainly are centered around Israel and muslims - refugees and/or German citizens - who are accused to have imported antisemitism into the land of holocaust via opposing Israel's warfare as apartheid and occupation policy.

Especially for people and organizations in sciences, culture and arts who are often subsidized by the state it's dangerous to protest against Germany unconditionally supporting Israel regardless how bad the mistreatment of Palestinans gets

That again is a win-win especially for the far-right #AfD who for one can lash out at nonwhite migrants who they want to push out of the country and to the other jump on top of the band wagon for Israel thus serving the authoritarily enacted Staatsräson (reason of state) to always take sides for Israel in an exemplary manner.

So German laws aren't coming down so hard on dissidents as the ruling consensus management does - Marcuse called this informal but efficient practice "repressive tolerance".

@dhayannada @acb @draNgNon Does Kolektiva have a questionaire? Do they allow people who are pro-Palestinian and anti Ukrainian Nazi's? because I have had problems finding another instance that allows a person to be against The US position on both the Ukraine and the Middle east. A massively empowered national police organization that considers the elected head of the Executive Branch to be a criminal target in need of “disrupting” and “discrediting,” the way Hoover went after the Revolutionary Action Movement or the Nation of Islam, is by definition an illegal/subversive organization that needs to be dismantled and rebuilt with a much narrower mission. Syria is a very complex situation. If you are confused that is ok. I’m going to try to explain a few things regarding who is involved and what it could mean.

The anti government offensive recently was started by Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). HTS split from Al-Qaeda in 2016. The commander of HTS at the time of the attack was Abu Muhammad al-Jolani. He also was the head of Al Nusra Front (Al Qaeda in Syria). You will see many people now echoing the claim that HTS has become more “moderate” - the only reason they needed to give this disclaimer to begin with is due to the egregious war crimes and ethnic cleansing they have engaged with in the past. Even just recently we’ve seen HTS targeting both religious and ethnic minorities. Saying this does not take away from disgusting war crimes and massacres the regime has committed. Two things can be true. Turkey also plays a big role in this but more on that later.

In addition to the attack headed by HTS, there is another battle going on as the Syrian National Army (Turkey funded Syrian rebel umbrella organization) has been mainly targeting Kurdish forces (SDF/YPG) in north Halab (Aleppo). Most of the SNA groups have been focused on targeting the Kurds, but at least 3 SNA battalions have been involved in HTS led attacks against Assad.

SDF is the Syrian Democratic Forces, which is a coalition that includes the YPG (The People’s Defense Units, or People’s Protection Units) and YPJ (Women's Protection Units/Women’s Defense Units). You will also see many people talking about DAANES or AANES, which stands for the Decentralized Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria, which is also known as Rojava. YPJ was formed after so many women joined YPG, the women decided to form their own unit- which is entirely autonomous. Many peoples skepticism of YPG comes from them working with US forces to fight Daesh, but that’s a whole other story. They have also recently seemingly surrendered in certain regions to HTS/SNA leaving many people who fled for safety in more vulnerable and unsafe conditions.

Syrian Armed Forces, or Syrian Arab Armed Forces (SAF/SAAF) is the regimes military. There are also *many* other groups involved, including ethnic and religious militias both opposed to the regime and on the side of the regime.

Not long into the Syrian revolution, progressive forces were being targeted and quickly eradicated. As dissent of the people was being crushed by the regime and their allies, militant salafi factions became the most prominent force (such as Al Nusra)

As this was happening, Russia and hezbollah were helping Assad. Syria is the primary supply route to Iran, so it was (is) important for hezb to maintain that. (more on this later)

Following the siege of Mosul in Iraq, the IS (Islamic State, aka ISIL (Islamic state of iraq and the Levant) aka Daesh) was able to cross into Syria. At the time, the United States was aware of this and intentionally let them enter. A destabilized and terrorized Syria is good for western interests. The IS wreaked havoc on and terrorized our country and people and took major advantage of Syrias vulnerability during the war. The IS still has a fairly strong presence in eastern Syria. The ideology lingers, and the instability just makes it easier for them to recruit.

So already we have a lot going on and a lot of people and groups involved. Iraq, Lebanon, Palestine, Russia, turkey, Iran, the US, Israel… there’s even more that I haven’t mentioned. they’re all a part of this. and already we have so many motivations and self interests, many of which are conflicting, and many of which align. It’s actually so complex that it’s not uncommon to see groups strategically work with their enemies on an operation against a shared enemy.

It’s so hard to say what will happen, and things change so fast. But the outcome of this could have massive repercussions. Not just regionally, but globally.

Let’s say HTS successfully takes over Syria after expelling Assad… the dangers religious extremism can impose are endless. As I mentioned earlier, Al Nusra and other religious extremist militias treated ethnic and religious minorities terribly and took part in ethnic cleansing. We will likely see what little ethnic and religious minorities are left in Syria flee the country. Many already have. Just as they did during the civil war. Sectarian hatred is already a big problem. Via its proxies within the country (SNA, HTS), turkey would also expand its power in Syria… this could include crushing Kurdish forces with the ultimate goal of occupying more Syrian territory. With all that is happening regionally, there is a power imbalance, and Turkey is fully exploiting the situation.

Then there’s the question of what will happen in eastern Syria where IS still has a large presence. Depending on how things play out, there’s a chance we see the IS taking over parts of Syria. If there is a resurrection of the Islamic State in eastern Syria, there’s also a chance this spills across the border into Iraq.

If HTS takes over, the ability to transport weapons from Iran through Syria on land is gone. And they can’t do this by plane in Lebanon or Palestine… so this, as you can imagine, also has devastating consequences for Lebanon and Palestine, in addition to Iran, and is a wonderful thing for Israel. Syria is a crucial ally to Iran as the country is a crucial ally to the axis of resistance against Israel and the west. The US/Israel get to isolate hezb. If they succeed in this isolation, they also succeed in further destabilizing Lebanon and a high likelihood of civil and/or religiously motivated tension in the future for an already vulnerable and unstable country.

Anyways, this is just some context and info on what’s currently happening in Syria and what it could mean. I don’t want what’s happening to overshadow the beginning of the Syrian revolution- which was about democracy and fighting a fascist regime. The revolution was a grassroots movement against a ruling elite. It was a movement of the people. The revolution gradually became more and more repressed and brushed off as it became a proxy war and was infiltrated with religious extremists who are not seeking liberation for all. People standing up to tyranny were tortured to death by the regime. We need to hold them in our memories and not let them be overshadowed by those with violent self serving interests. Religious allegiance will never bring liberation for all.

Power and solidarity to all the people of Syria always 🖤

google’s latest fuckery: if you write online, read this

The Google app for iOS now adds THEIR links to YOUR posts from YOUR website unless you opt-out.

Their links lead people away from your site and back to Google. Because that’s definitely what you want, right? That’s why you have a blog or portal or web site or whatever. You want people to leave your site and go back to Google.

Oh, it’s not?

If you don’t like it, you can “Opt out.” Opting out is a pain in the ass. Here’s where you go to do it. You have to enter every variation of each of your domains or it won’t work. It will take up to 30 days, during which time Google will continue to pollute your work and your writing and your website with their modifications and their added links to take people away from your site and back to themselves.

For example, here’s the list of what I need to opt-out just for this one blog:

Yes, you explicitly have to file no prefix, http:, and https: variants separately. They say so.

Making it difficult like this is 100% intentional and entirely designed to make it as annoying as possible, and also, to make sure you slip up if at all possible and forget one or more combinations.

(Tho’ I am just going to depreciate web. as a prefix right now, to bring down the load a little. Still gonna list ’em, though, because spite is why.)

Right now it’s only in the Google app for iOS and it’s probably a test to see whether they can get away with it without complaint, and how much revenue it generates. Let’s make that a combination of no and as close to zero as possible. Because otherwise they’ll roll it out everywhere, and probably derank you if you don’t go along.

Fucking hell, Google. Fuck you. Just… fuck you.

Judge finds New York City in contempt over jail conditions, moves closer to a federal takeover

A judge on Wednesday found New York City in contempt for failing to staunch violence and brutality at its jails, a scathing ruling that puts the troubled Rikers Island jail complex on the verge of a federal takeover.

In a written decision, U.S. District Judge Laura Taylor Swain in Manhattan said the city had placed incarcerated people in “unconstitutional danger” by failing to comply with 18 separate provisions of court orders pertaining to security, staffing, supervision, use of force and the safety of young detainees.

While living in the West may indeed seem depressing at present, it’s crucial to remember that the West only represents a minority portion of the global population. A broader perspective reveals a more hopeful picture. The emergence of BRICS as a counterforce against Western imperialism is a significant development. Many countries are moving away from using the US dollar, and a whole new economic system is evolving outside of the West. 🧵

🚨 BIG NEWS: The Biden Justice Dept just quietly issued a new policy giving corporate lawbreakers a new get-out-of-jail-free card even if they profited off multiple crimes.

The policy comes as Biden DOJ officials may be seeking new jobs back in the corporate sector. buff.ly/3Vb4F4q

52% of Ukrainians favour "making some territorial concessions" to end the war, while only 38% oppose it. There is not a majority for continuing the war in a single oblast.

It is at least time to stop pretending that NATO's objective is to "help" Ukraine.

Also, important to keep in mind that the war could've been over two months in if the west did not intervene. Without western "help", Ukraine would have been in a vastly better situation than it finds itself in today.

news.gallup.com/poll/653495/ha…

2
But that chart shows Ukrainians have only now started to think it’s not worth it. Whatever NATO’s intentions are it’s been clear Ukrainians did not want to just roll over. Fatigue has changed that.
@ryanroberts that's not exactly a surprise given that all the political opposition was banned and there's no free media in the country.
@ryanroberts and frankly it was insane for anybody to think that Ukraine could win a war of attrition with Russia. People in Ukraine were used in a most cynical fashion.

Is that Russia or Ukraine? But seriously, that then suggests the chart is useless.

From my POV Russia is run by absolute fuck nuts whose war has absolutely no legitimacy or interest to Russian people. Ukraine has its issues and the war just made them worse. NATO, well NATO is NATO doing NATO things. But that doesn’t legitimise Putin’s war.

@ryanroberts after 2014 coup, Ukraine no longer had a legitimate government that represented the interests of its people. The issue Ukraine has is that it's became a western puppet and used to try and weaken Russia as was outlined in the RAND policy paper.

rand.org/pubs/research_reports…

1
And do you think Putin made the right move? I'd say he did an incredible job worsening that situation, the US couldn't have asked for a better reaction and if or when Ukraine concedes there is absolutely no chance Russia will be in a meaningfully stronger position.

@ryanroberts I'm not sure how any of the events over the past two years worked out in favor of the west to be honest.

There is now active dedollarization happening as a direct result of sanctions on Russia, and European economies are in a tailspin as a result of the economic war.

The Global South is now firmly aligned with the BRICS against the G7.

@ryanroberts

World Bank just reclassified Russia as a high income country blogs.worldbank.org/en/opendat…

Russian oil and gas revenues soared 41% in first half of the year reuters.com/business/energy/ru…

@ryanroberts the original goal outlined in the RAND paper of extending or weakening Russia has clearly not been achieved.

If anything the opposite has happened, and it's the US that's now overextended mired in a war of attrition in Ukraine and supporting a genocidal regime in Israel.

@ryanroberts most importantly, the west managed to push China and Russia together. This is the outcome that's an absolute disaster from the US perspective because it closes the door on isolating China or cutting it off from resources through some sort of a blockade.

Totally. The US navy is not up to date with current warfare methodology. Too expensive and cumbersome.

Watched the interview with anthropology professor Maura Finkelstein on #ElectronicIntifada yesterday. I found it very interesting, among other things, Finkelstein talks about how "safe spaces" and "feeling insecure" have been weaponized to silence academic discussion on Palestine, and how this is in part due to a coordinated, international effort by Israel, carried out trough sponsorships and international organization, like Hillel.

To answer @keefmarshall's questions about how to pickle #olives (see mastodon.online/@keefmarshall/… ), here's a quick thread:

Before actually pickling the olives you will need to remove their bitter compounds.

For this you will need:
- gloves (as olive juices can stain your hands for days)
- a bucket
- a chopping board and sharp knife
or (if you're a traditionalist)
- a wood stump and a small block of wood that fits into your hand
...

🧵1/x

#Pickling #Preserving #OliveHarvest

2

... or (if you're slightly less of a traditionalist, but are too lazy to cut every olive)
- a large chopping board and a wooden meat tenderizer

Step 1:
Inspect the olives for any pests (as aptly demonstrated by #RubiaTheCat) and remove any stalks.

Step 2, option a)
- cut each olive diagonally with the knife and place them in a bucket filled with tap water (as demonstrated by Fina and #MiniTheCat)

Step 2, option b)
- whack each olive with the meat tenderizer so it slightly cracks
...

🧵2/x

... and place in a bucket filled with tap water.

Step 2, option c)
- place an olive on the wood stump and quickly whack it with the smaller piece of wood, before it rolls off the stump. With a bit of practice you can transport the olive with now partially cracked skin into a water-filled bucket during the same movement.

Step 3:

- The cut or cracked olives now need to stay in the bucket, making sure they are fully covered by water.
- Cover the bucket loosely with a lid to avoid any ...
