Many of these colleagues of ours were taken by Israel during the attacks.They all told us a slightly different version of the same story: in captivity they were barely fed, continuously physically and psychologically abused, and finally dumped naked on the side of a road.Many told us they were subjected to mock executions and other forms of mistreatment and torture.Far too many of our healthcare colleagues told us they were simply waiting to die.

Volker Turk says the UN has recorded 136 Israeli attacks on 27 #health facilities in Gaza, which have caused “significant death and destruction”. While Israel often states that #Palestinian armed groups use such facilities for military purposes, Turk said Israel has not backed up those claims with evidence.
“Israel has not provided sufficient information to substantiate many of these claims, which are often vague and broad. In some cases they appear to be contradicted by publicly available information,” Turk said in remarks to the United Nations Security Council.

On March 30, the first day of Eid al-Fitr, they went back and uncovered 14 more bodies buried in the sand in a mass grave. All of them were still dressed in their uniforms and wearing gloves. Among them were Mohammad and his colleagues Mustafa Khafaja, Ezzedine Sha’at, Saleh Moammar, Rifaat Radwan, Ashraf Abu Labda, Mohammad al-Hila, and Raed al-Sharif.
The killing of these paramedics is not an isolated incident. #Israel has been systematically targeting medical and rescue workers as part of its genocidal war – a war against life itself in Gaza. Only in Gaza, medical uniforms and ambulances do not offer protection, which international law affords. Only in Gaza, medical uniforms and ambulances can mark people as targets for execution.
Despite the Israeli army’s attempt to cover up its crime by burying it in the sand, evidence speaks for what happened. A statement released by the Palestinian Ministry of Health on March 30 said the Israeli forces carried out an execution and that some of the victims were handcuffed and had injuries to the head and chest. The chief of the #UN humanitarian affairs office in Palestine said the paramedics and first responders were killed “one by one”.

Dr Marwan al-Sultan, a renowned and highly experienced cardiologist and director of the Indonesian hospital in the #Gaza Strip, is the 70th #healthcare worker to be killed by Israeli attacks in the last 50 days, according to Healthcare Workers Watch (HWW), a Palestinian medical organisation.
“This is part of a much longer and systematic atrocious targeting of healthcare workers sanctioned by impunity. This is a tragic loss of life, but also an obliteration of their decades of lifesaving medical expertise and care at a time when the situation facing Palestinian civilians is unfathomably catastrophic,” Alser added.
“He was a prominent scholar and one of the two remaining cardiologists left in Gaza. Thousands of heart patients will suffer as a result of his killing. His only fault was that he was a doctor. We have no option but to be steadfast, but the sense of loss is devastating.”

Gaza’s Health Ministry reports that at least 360 medical personnel have been arrested by Israel inside the enclave since the start of the war and those detained are “living in tragic and harsh conditions”.
Among the detainees are doctors, further depriving thousands of wounded Palestinians of medical care, the ministry said in a statement.
It called for urgent international intervention “to criminalise the occupation’s practices against imprisoned medical staff and to pressure for their release”.
The Israeli army has killed at least 1,400 healthcare and medical workers across Gaza since the start of the war in October 2023, according to the ministry.

Israeli special forces have abducted Dr Marwan al-Hams, director of Abu Youssef al-Najjar Hospital and spokesperson for the Palestinian health ministry in Gaza, outside the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) field hospital in the southern part of the enclave.
The Palestinian health ministry said on Monday that Hams, who also oversees field hospitals in the #Gaza Strip, was on his way to visit the #ICRC facility in northern Rafah when undercover Israeli soldiers opened fire, killing one person and wounding another civilian, before capturing him.
The person killed was a local journalist who had been conducting an interview with al-Hams at the time of the attack.
"This cowardly act targeted one of the most prominent humanitarian and medical voices who has conveyed to the world the pain of starving children, the suffering of wounded patients deprived of medication, and the cries of mothers at hospital gates," the ministry said in a statement.

The ruling, issued Tuesday by the Be’er Sheva Court, classifies him as an “unlawful combatant”, a term that Israel has been extensively using to describe abductees from Gaza.
Israeli forces kidnapped Dr. Abu Safiya in December 2024 after storming Kamal Adwan Hospital. Soldiers forced him out at gunpoint, destroying the hospital and putting it out of service.
His family reports that he has suffered severe torture and starvation in Israeli prisons. A lawyer who recently visited him confirmed this.
Dr. Abu Safiya paid a personal price for his dedication. On October 26, 2024, Israeli forces killed his son, Ibrahim, during a raid on the hospital. Earlier, he was injured in an Israeli airstrike but refused to leave his patients.

His room (Room 1, Section 24 – Ofer Prison) was specifically raided.
He was brutally assaulted in the chest area and sustained severe bruises to the face, head, back, and neck.
The beating lasted approximately 30 minutes.
Dr. Hossam requested medical care, proper testing, and to be examined by a cardiologist — but his request was denied.
He suffers from irregular heartbeat. His eyeglasses, which had recently been sent to him through his lawyer, were broken.
He is still wearing winter clothes while enduring starvation, torture, solitary confinement, and total deprivation — buried underground, with no exposure to sunlight.
Dr. Hossam Abu Safiya, like all Palestinian detainees, is not okay.

This is how they get their crazy stories about comic book style underground bases under the hospitals.
Nothing actually in the hospitals is illegal. The half a dozen guns and misc junk fit easily in the exemptions in article 22 of the relevant 1949 Geneva convention.
Even a guy shooting at them from the hospital it is probably covered by Article 22, if they were approaching the hospital and he reasonably believed they might hurrt patients or staff. If that guy even ever existed in any of the cases they reported something like that. His actions were wildly counter productive. But, as far as I can tell, legal, and did not make the hospital a valid target.
